Best internet access method over MPLS?

Hello!!
once again, i have to choose between design opinions and I'd like to hear about your exeperiences... Now referred to internet access.
I have several customer needing to learn full internet routing and stablishing bgp connection with our PE's (for access backup pourposes).
When needing to use more specific than default routes, it's said to be more conventient to use global routing tables to distribute full internet routes, in order to save memory on the PE's.
Now my doubt: if this design forces me to use diferent subinterfaces and VRF's for a client needing both VPN and internet access, and knowing that maybe I could use the same vpn for providing internet to all our customers, sho internet routes will be available in just one VRF... wouldn't it be cleaner using just one vpn (and one vrf in every PE router) for internet access for all the customer (yet Knowing it will use three times more memory)...?
know ebgp sessions in a PE could be stablished through de internet access vrf. Moreover, any client needing private VPN could use a diferent (sub)interface
what do you think about? global routes or just one vrf carrying internet routes?
Thanks in advance

Well, both are good options, and we have designed networks for SP's with both these options. The deciding factor for them however has been, the requirements form the INternet Service, Wthether this service is for A) End customer who want default or partial/full routing table. Or wtherther this service is for a B) ISP who can serve his TIer 2/3 ISP customer.
A) For End Enterprise Customers.
If its meant for end customer who simply want a default route and some customer who may want partial/full routes but who arent ISP's then You can consider the VRF solution, as it would be very easy for you to provision and deprovision within the network. Just a little more load on the memory but since its one VRF your typical PE can handle the Internet in a VRF with 1 gig of MEM.
B) For Tier2/3 ISP Customers
Now if its for your T2/T3 ISP customer, then the VRF method has certain drawbacks,
Drawback ) ISP customers dont want a single best route coming to them from a RR, Since you are their provider ISP you would be having many connection to upstream peering points and NAP/IXP. So your ISP customers want all these routes so they can themselves decide the best route for different service requirements of their end customer.
Solution) Now if you have to give all these routes to the ISP you have to assign a different RD value for ech upstream peering point,
Caveat) This ould increase your memory requirement on the PE's and RR's tremendously as they would be holding duplicates of you Internet Routing table bcos of different RD values.
Differen Approach ) Having said that, some ISP's have implemented the best of both world, but it comes with cost constraints. You can extend you IBGP of the Internet AS withing a VRF, that is infra routes only within VRF and have dedicated Internet Peering Edge Routers at all locations where you consider to provide this service to ISP's, so you extend you IBGP using the VRF, hence none of the P or PE routes hold no internet routes in any form, they only have the infra routes in the VRF. using these Infra routes, the Internet Peering Edge Routers form IBGP with a Internet RR which is your dedciated regular RR for Internet routers, and exchange all internet routes, and give them to your downstream ISP customers.
Global Routing Table )
Ntohign wrong with this, method, everything works as it was working before your MPLS network was there, except the fact that your intermediate routers dont hold Internet Tabel and its a BGP Free Core.
This is better than the VRF option A method
as you wont hold internet routing table with more memory which is bcos of the VPNV4. And the Second VRF option B is far superior to this method but with added one time cost.
Hope this info helps u to decide better.

  • Design validation for Internet over MPLS

    We have a Network on MPLS backbone with dual service provider.
    There are 50 spoke location.
    DC and DR location
    Topology is hub and spoke with all sites accessing data hosted at primary DC.
    ALso in case of disaster all the spoke sites will connect to DR site.
    Servers at DR site are on unique IP and failover from DC to DR is taken care by BGP routing intelligence.
    Aim is to give controlled internet access to all the spoke sites from DC and incase of failure internet should be available from DR site.
    As per our design architecture we are planning to upgrade the last mile bandwidth and MPLS port of all spoke sites and central site MPLS port bandwidth to give integrated access on the same last mile for all the locations.
    Both types of traffic private and public will ride on the same MPLS bancbone and come to the primary DC site CE router.
    At CE router we will segreggate the traffic meant for datacentre and internet cloud.
    We will also deploy firewall and separate internet router and proxy server for the proposed internet connectivity to control the spoke sites traffic.
    Is this a good design.
    Pls suggest with configuration on how are we going to achiecve this
    Also currently we are using BGP between CE-PE --- it should take care of the global routing meant for Internet traffic by flooding default route across all the spoke sites
    Pls fins the existing architecute attahced.
    Any inputs on the same will be appreciated.
    Regards

    As per your post you are looking for the solution to route internet via DC and on failure via DR.
    To do this you can inject default routes from both DC and DR. in doing this all the PE's in SP1 and SP2 will have 2 defaults in the VRF table for you. But only 1 would be installed based on regular BGP path selection process.
    To manipulate and select default from DC you can change any BGP path attribute and make the DC default favourable over DR default.
    I did not understand where you are doing PBR, but anyway PBR will work in sync with CEF without putting any load on you CPU since IOS 12.0. So you can run PBR whereever you are running it.
    http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios122/122cgcr/fqos_c/fqcprt1/qcfpbr.htm
    To answer is this a good design or not, more inputs would be required as the current diagram is insufficient with legends, and the logic behind the creation of 3 vlans in the diagram is not explained in the post.
    Its not clear which site are you designating as spoke site, as the remote sites box has dual routers and dual connections.
    Since a good design of a network is more of what your data flow and business needs are and then based upon it, the technical design should meet the requirements put forth and scale as well at the same time. Here if you agree we dont have any of those inputs as well.

  • Time Capsule - how to gain "over-the-internet" access from Windows 7!

    Hi guys,
    I've been fighting for such a long time with my Time Capsule. I have no idea how to gain access "over-the-internet" on a PC (Windows 7) which is running on  another network. My Time Capsule is set up with my Macbook Pro at home running Lion OSX, and i have internet connection. My brother who also uses Macbook has no problems connecting to my Time Capsule - through finder (connect to a server). But how do I gain "over-the-internet" access to my Time Capsule through a PC (Windows 7) from my office? Is there please someone who can guide me step-by-step, how to gain connection to my TC through a PC? Or maybe just an explantaion what has to be done on the PC before this thing can work out! This was the main reason to why i bought Time Capsule - besides of the Time Machine function. I also have an iCloud account (earlier Mobile Me), if that makes any difference.
    Thanks!

    There is no way to do it from windows direct to the TC.
    It only presents AFP to the WAN side. And most ISP block SMB from internet access due to risks. There is AFAIK, no suitable AFP protocol utility for windows at the moment. If you google and find one, be aware it probably will not work to your satisfaction anyway.
    You must use a Mac to access AFP but even then it is not a secure protocol and I would recommend against it anyway.
    So basically if you had have asked before purchasing, I would have said, TC is unsuitable product. It is a backup drive for a Mac. It is not a NAS.. it is not designed for remote access by any computer other than a Mac. It does not support any other file protocol to the WAN interface.. and no secure protocol even there.
    A NAS with Time Machine extensions from QNAP, Synology, Netgear all are designed for web access and are far more suitable. Researching a purchase beforehand is always worthwhile.
    Anyway, your choices are.. return the TC and buy something more suited to the job.
    Or if return is now impossible sell the TC on ebay.. etc and do the same thing.. buy a more suitable NAS.
    Or buy a cheap mac mini (even second hand) and use that for communications with home.
    Or, replace your current router with something that includes vpn. This is actually a good and commercially sound decision. VPN is generally used by business to connect to remote locations, because it is secure and will allow the greatest flexibility of connection. How hard or easy depends on the current setup. I would recommend a combined modem router with vpn server if you have adsl. Or for cable you can find plenty of routers with combined vpn. You can also use those for adsl if your ISP allows pppoe with bridged modem. The TC will have to be bridged as well. For other broadband it might be harder to find the right kind of box.
    Once you setup a vpn you can access it from work using the appropiate vpn client in your work computer.

  • Centralize internet access in MPLS VPN

    Can i implement Centralize internet access (the Hub CE Router to performs NAT) in cisco MPLS VPN solution?
    If so, is there any example about that? i can't find it at CCO~
    Thanks a lot~

    If you run dynamic routing protocol in PE-CE,like rip2,ospf,bgp,do the following task.
    1:set a default route in HUB CE;and generate the default route under its dynamic protocol.
    2:in other CEs, make sure they can learn this route.
    If you run static route and vrf static route between CE and PE,do the following task.
    1.set default route in HUB CE, and set default route in other CEs.
    2.In all PEs,redistribute the connected and static rotues to address-family ipv4 of customer vrf.
    3.set the customer vrf default route in all PE which connected your all CEs.
    Note: make sure all PEs can reach the GW address of vrf deafult route. GW IP address is the interface of which HUB CE towards PE.
    command: "ip route vrf 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 global.

    Can anyone tell me how I keep everything I had in my old photoshop, now I've updated to Photoshop CC 2014.  It did give me the option to transport over all my presets, but because I didn't have internet access at the time, it couldn't do it.  Now I'm not getting the option.  Please help.

    Migrating Presets does not require a network connection and you can still migrate your cc presets if you still have CC installed.  Use Photoshop menu Edit>Presets>Migrate Presets...  Migrating presets only migrates presets.  It does not migrate Plugins, settings, extensions and scripts.  CC 2014 is also not completely backwards compatible with CC.  Support for Flash Panels and Oil Painter filter have been removed.  So extensions like mini bridge no longer work in CC 2014

    You might want to try resetting your router and your modem - just unplug the cords, leave them unplugged for about 3-5 minutes and then replug the modem and then the router in that order.
    This may or may not correct your problem - call back if it doesn't.

  • Best Access Method and Estimated Performance

    Dear folks,
    I'm new to BDB. Although I have read all the documentation and the DS Presentation from Margo, I would like to ask your help to tunne my db layout.
    I have to index 1 million key/data pairs in wich key is a logical number and data is 256 lenght (64 int array).
    The size of the database is around 200MB. After the initial seed of data, the data will be READ ONLY. No need for concurrent access. One C program will acess the DB (single threaded).
    I'm running on a Dual Xeon 3.2 GHz with 4 gb RAM.
    I've choosen to use the QUEUE ACCESS METHOD (since I'm using logical numbers as key and a fixed data size).
    I need to randomly access 140.000 keys in the DB.
    As I've read from the documentation this would be accomplished in less than a second.
    I would like to ask you what would be the expected retrieval time (number of keys/second) for my case (millions of 256 bytes data, with default configuration options) and if QUEUE is the best choice.
    From my implementation test the c program takes a considerable amount of time the first time it queries (dpb->get) the database for 140.000 keys (is this the so called COLD START?). The successive times I run the program querying the DB with different 140.000 random keys it becames faster for each new run (is this because I'm warming up the cache?).
    I'm using default configuration values for all tunning params: cache, mmapsize, etc...
    Would it be possible to load the whole DB in memory before querying it with dpb->get? Would it make the 140.000 querying process faster?
    I've tryied to iterate trough every record with a cursor and it takes around 5 seconds the first time and then gets faster on the successive runs. I've also tryied to iterate through every page to "warm up" the process before querying the 140.000 keys but did not have a great improvement.
    My goal is to query 140.000 random keys from the DB as fastest as possible. (Be it changing by choosing a more appropriate access method, be it for tunning the config parameters).
    I appreciate your help.
    Maurice S.

    Thank you Michael for your reply!!!
    I've seen the thread regarding the strategy of openning the mpool file and iterating through the pages.
    I've implemented that sucessfully (that reduced the total time required to perform the "get's" and also make this time a CONSTANT of around 0.5 seconds).
    My implementation works the following way:
    1) First I create the DB_ENV pointer
    1.A) All my dbs are in a folder called "dbs". Therefore I call dbenv->set_data_dir appropriatelly
    1.B) dbenv->set_mp_mmapsize(dbenv,300*1024*1024); (each DB has 183 MB)
    1.C) I set the cache size to the smallest possible value dbenv->set_cachesize(dbenv, 0, 20 *1024, 0); [as I've read through the forum about similar cases]
    1.D) Finally dbenv->open(dbenv, "db",DB_CREATE | DB_RDONLY| DB_INIT_MPOOL, 0))
    2) Then I call the db (wich has 700.000 records; with for 4 bytes for each key, and 260 bytes for each data)
    2.A) db_create(&dbs[c], dbenv, 0))
    2.B) dbs[c]->set_re_len(dbs[c],260)
    2.C) dbs[c]->set_pagesize(dbs[c], 64*1024))
    2.D) dbs[c]->open(dbs[c],NULL, database, NULL, DB_QUEUE, DB_RDONLY, 0664))
    Then I do the "mpool file iteration":
    .....all the code from that thread.....
    DB_MPOOLFILE* mfp =NULL;
    mfp = dbs[c]->get_mpf(dbs[c]);
    db_pgno_t lastPageNum;
    void* pageAddr;
    mfp->get(mfp, &lastPageNum, NULL, DB_MPOOL_LAST, &pageAddr);
    mfp->put(mfp, pageAddr, DB_PRIORITY_UNCHANGED, 0);
    db_pgno_t pageNum=0;
    for(pageNum=0; pageNum<=lastPageNum; pageNum++)
    mfp->get(mfp,&pageNum, NULL, 0, &pageAddr);
    mfp->put(mfp,pageAddr, DB_PRIORITY_UNCHANGED,0);
    And then I get 140.000 random records:
    DBT key, data;
    for(k=0;k<140000;k++)
    db_recno_t recno=rand()%700000;
    memset(&key, 0, sizeof(DBT));
    memset(&data, 0, sizeof(DBT));
    key.data = &recno;
    key.size = sizeof(recno);
    int dc[65];
    data.data = dc;
    data.ulen = sizeof(dc);
    data.flags = DB_DBT_USERMEM;
    dbp->get(dbp, NULL, &key, &data, 0);
    It takes around 0.5 seconds to perform all 140.000 random GET's.
    I have 20 DB's like the one described above.
    Changing the code above in order to use another one of the 20 DB's results in the same EXECUTION TIME (around 0.5 seconds).
    Is this the performance that you would expect from BDB? 280.000 random accessess per second in a 700.000 records QUEUE DB with 260 bytes data field?
    Is there any other parameters I could tunne to improve performace?
    Would BTREE acess method perform better ? (I could index the record numbers as strings: "00000001", "00000002", ..... )
    I do appreciate your attention.
    Hope my post can be a source for help to other BDB users, as the forum has been to me.
    Best rgs,

  • Can the time machine be accessed remotely over the internet?

    Hi, I am thinking about purchasing the time machine. Can the hard drive on the time machine be accessed remotely over the internet?

    Do you realize that if you store some of your Mac's data (photos, music, etc.) ONLY  on the external Time Capsule, AND also  store your "Time Machine" app "system backups" on the Time Capsule,then if the Time Capsule hard drive ever fails you will have lost the " original" and the "backup" copies of all that data  (photos, music, etc.)?  They will be gone forever.  NOT recommended!

  • Slow internet access over 3G

    Since 5/31/12, my internet access over 3G has been super duper slow.
    I can see that a request is going out from the phone, but the phone just sits there saying 'requesting'  this is happening with any site I visit.  Anyone else seeing this behavior?  I live in the San Francisco Bay Area.  I've been seeing this problem in the South Bay and North Bay.

    I have experienced very to to connect for about a week. Contacted support by email yesterday and got this response this morning. Surprisingly, it was better today.

  • Internet access for clients

    GuysNeed some assistance on providing internet access at a branch site for clients. Any thoughts and suggestions welcome and appreciatedWe have a number of branch offices connected over ISP managed MPLS network, any-2-any. I am looking at implementing some kind of internet access at the branch offices, either wired or wireless. We manage all the L1 and L2 connectivity at the sites, and the L3 side at our hub offices, of which we have 2, mainly for internet traffic etc, which isnt provided by our MPLS ISPCurrently all internet traffic for all sites goes to our data centre and is routed out through our firewall. Routing isnt an issue here, its more the best way to set this up securely.My initial thoughts were to set aside a whole bunch of ports on a seperate PVLAN that would connect the clients to the network (I am not conerned about the clients talking to each other, as long as they cant reach the local vlans). But the problem may lie at the firewall end, as I will need to specify specific hosts for port 80, 443 traffic only. Would a seperate DHCP scope, of say a /28, allowing 16 hosts only be an idea? Then I wouldnt have to mess around with firewall changes for different hosts all the timeThanks

    Hi,
    How are things going?
    I agree with Darshana. You could connect to Internet by using a router. Router can be configured to enable all users in a network to share a single connection to the Internet. Routing and Remote Access of windows server provides built-in
    routing services that can be used to connect an organization to the Internet through a routed connection to an ISP.
    You can also configure a windows server as a NAT server in your network. A network address translator is an IP router that can translate IP addresses and TCP or UDP port numbers of packets as they are being forwarded. NAT translates private
    IP addresses to external, public IP addresses. Then the computers of LAN can access Internet.
    Best Regards,
    Tina

    Safari and firefox stop working after a few minutes of browsing, regardless of what site I'm on. I have to restart my computer to get internet access again but it only works for a few more minutes, then I have to restart again. I don't get a spinning ball, it just stops working at whatever page it's on. I can close the program just fine but when I re-open it, either safari or firefox, it freezes trying to load the hompage. This started a few days ago after trying to stream a movie on my computer. I'm on a Mac Air OS X Version 10.6.8 and have downloaded all updates. When I go into finder, it says I have over 80 gigs available. Is there some other memory cache that I need to check? Thanks so much for your help.

    It's not a router problem as I explained in my post. If it was a router problem then I wouldn't have the problem everywhere I go. It is an issue with the software.

    I'm not trying to belittle your issues; you're certainly having them and I know first hand how annoying an intermittent AirPort issue can be. (In fact, mine was due to an AirPort driver bug that no one else seemed to suffer from.)
    The single best diagnostic you could do is take your system running 10.5.7 to an Apple Store, and try using their in-store network.
    If your machine performs flawlessly, it may be a router issue.
    If your machine has connectivity issues there, it may be a hardware problem with your machine.
    There have been numerous people in multiple threads over the years who swore that an update was buggy because things used to work, but returned later to sheepishly admit that they took their machine in, a problem was found and fixed, and now their Mac works flawlessly with the newer software.
    But simply reinstalling 10.5.5 in no way means the explanation of how firmware bugs may be at play here is incorrect.
    In the context of that explanation, all you've done is possibly reinstall software that asks to add "2 + 3."

  • How do I connect my Centro to the Internet via bluetooth over PC's Internet? Where is Centro's PPP Connection Type? How do I setup Login Script for bluetooth connection?

    I am trying to set up bluetooth on the Centro to connect to the internet via my PC's internet.
    HotSync over bluetooth works successfully.
    Computer specs: Toshiba P205-S6277; Bluetooth Stack v5.10.04 (currently using); Bluetooth Monitor v3.01 (to use Vista's built-in bluetooth)
    I think I have narrowed my problem down to 3 things.
    (1) Finding Network Access properties (to allow connected devices to access the internet)
    (2) Finding Centro's Network Connection Type: PPP
    (3) Finding the correct Login Script to use
    for (1) I think I've looked everywhere; found nothing on Network Access.
    Checked control panel: only Bluetooth Local COM
    Right-clicked bluetooth icon > Settings: File transfer, PAN Networking, PAN DHCP server, AV controls. Other bluetooth settings are for file transfer or object push. I don't see anything like this.
    I'm stumped on (2). It seems as if palm removed this option under Centro's Advanced network settings .
    Nearly all the forums that I read says to choose Connection Type: PPP.
    (3) Found 2 scripts that seemed would work. I don't know how it exactly works but it sounds workable.
    First script:
    Send: CLIENT
    Send: CLIENT
    Wait for: CLIENTSERVER
    End:
    Script 1 Connect Log:

    Second script:
    Send CR:
    Delay: 1
    Send: CLIENT
    Wait For: CLIENTSERVER
    End
    **UPDATE** I found on this forum (Reply # 3689) that the script is needed only if you are using Palm OS 4 or under. Centro uses Palm OS 5.49121. Can anyone support this?
    Even without the script it has problems "Signing In".
    I'm currently reading this site and trying out its decribed methods. I will update this thread when I get the results.
    I'm using the Centro. And If anyone's been able to successfully connect to the internet on the Centro via a bluetooth connection to the PC WITHOUT 3rd party applications, please share.  If not, please share any ideas.

    For the record, I just tried out a few of the solutions (mRouter & SoftickPPP) on XP and they work perfectly.

    Restore phone in iTunes using a backup
    Restore in iTunes as new, without using a backup

    Do you think this product is possible?

    In general theory, one now has the Edit button for their posts, until someone/anyone Replies to it. I've had Edit available for weeks, as opposed to the old forum's ~ 30 mins.
    That, however, is in theory. I've posted, and immediately seen something that needed editing, only to find NO Replies, yet the Edit button is no longer available, only seconds later. Still, in that same thread, I'd have the Edit button from older posts, to which there had also been no Replies even after several days/weeks. Found one that had to be over a month old, and Edit was still there.
    Do not know the why/how of this behavior. At first, I thought that maybe there WAS a Reply, that "ate" my Edit button, but had not Refreshed on my screen. Refresh still showed no Replies, just no Edit either. In those cases, I just Reply and mention the [Edit].
    Also, it seems that the buttons get very scrambled at times, and Refresh does not always clear that up. I end up clicking where I "think" the right button should be and hope for the best. Seems that when the buttons do bunch up they can appear at random around the page, often three atop one another, and maybe one way the heck out in left-field.
    While I'm on a role, it would be nice to be able to switch between Flattened and Threaded Views on the fly. Each has a use, and having to go to Options and then come back down to the thread is a very slow process. Jive is probably incapable of this, but I can dream.
