Best LCD Monitor/TV tuner/DVD for use with MacBook

I am looking to expand my desktop with a 2nd monitor. As a bonus I would like the monitor to have a built in TV tuner NTSC and DVD player if possible.
Specifically what do I need to worry about for the computer desktop resolution/pixel count etc so the computer screens look good not just the HDTV content.
Using a MacBook with mini DVI to DVI connector to HDMI cable.

hey there Ryan, welcome to discussions!
it can depend on what you're doing... i've discovered i can't edit in Final Cut Pro 6 using my 42" Sony LCD proj. HDTV, but i can use my 42" Sony to watch DVDs & HD QT content from Apple's site. i can display my e-mail but i can't read it @ 1920x1080i from 10 feet away, i need to use a lower rez. in this instance when Apple says it does/doesn't support something it means their tests have shown best results(does support-23" monitor for any/everything) or you can try but if it doesn't work it's a limitation we can't do anything about(doesn't support-42" does work but not for everything). this is how i've interpreted their specs as i've pushed the envelope for using my MacBook.
Apple's specs don't support using my 42" Sony, but it does work, just not for everything(like Final Cut Pro) as it falls outside of the "safe zone" of their testing where all of the MacBook's capabilities work well. buy/borrow a cable to try the MacBook w/ your TV or take the Macbook to a Store to see what you get.
good luck.

  • What is an easy web-page creation program for use with MacBook Pro?

Can anyone suggest an easy web-page creation program for use with MacBook Pro?  I have used FrontPage with my PC, but am changing to a MacBook Pro.

It largely depends on your skill level. Do you want to write web page code, or do you want to just design something and have it turn into a web page automatically?
If you are more of a designer, try these:
    RapidWeaver
    Freeway Pro
    Muse
If you want to write web page code, try these:
    Coda
    BBEdit
    Dreamweaver
If you really don't want to write the code and want the best experience for your viewers, and you want to spend the least amount of time on it, my recommendation is:
    No program at all.
Instead, sign up with a web site company like:
WordPress.com (hosted by them) or WordPress.org (hosted on your server)
    Squarespace
    Wix
The reason is that these companies have fully operational, nicely designed web site templates that you just fill in with your words and pictures, and they are ready to go. They also give you these benefits:
Already designed to the latest web standards
    Already designed to resist hackers
Already designed to work on all browsers
Already designed to automatically adjust the page for readability on desktop, laptop, tablet, and smartphone screen sizes
    Already designed for accessibility
Already designed for Search Engine Optimization so that your page will be found on Google
Already designed with social media links built in if you want
It is not like the old days where you build a site in Front Page and you assume it will only be seen on a desktop computer. If you build it yourself with a web page program, do you have the knowledge to make a site that works on all of the different web browsers and mobile devices, and is friendly to search engines and social media? If you don't have those skills, working with a website company can be a lot better, faster, and more reliable than trying to hammer all of that out yourself using code in some app.

  • Compatible External DVD/CD Drives for use with MacBook Air

    Hello all,
I'm after buying an external drive and was hoping we could put together a list of compatible drives as I've read on other forums that not all are compatible.
Please no links as they tend to expire but rather just list the make and model of the drives.
    Thanks,

Sorry, but that's not correct. I got the white version:

  • Best wireless router (apple or non-apple)  for use with multiple Macs

What is the best wireless router, from any manufacturer, for use with 3-5 Macs? (in a reasonable price range... sub $150)
    least problems
    most reliable
    strongest signal/best range
    fewest drops
    fewest reboots

    The Apple Routers "just work".
I also have a linksys. It takes a good bit of knowledge and aggravation getting it set up, but once working it does fine.
If you plan to use your router to share a printer, hook to your stereo, etc. definitely stick with Apple. It will save you much grief.

  • Best wireless router for use with Powerbook 15"

Not everyone uses the Apple Airport, and some who do have mixed feelings about the various models.
What is the best wireless router, from any manufacturer, for use with an AlBook? What has the least problems, most reliable, strongest signal, fewest drops, best range, etc in your experience.

    Joeski,
I'll have to get back to you on what card my wifes laptop is using. I think it's a 802.11a/g, but I will confirm. My Powerbook 1.67 has the built in wireless card and to be honest, I have never looked to see what it uses.
We have our D-Link router set up for WPA2.
Neither her or I have had any issues when we have had to connect anywhere to any other wireless network and when I come home, I can connect back to my router automatically since my network is set up on my Powerbook as my 1st network of choice in connecting.
As far as replacing the antenna, I really dont know. It's has 3 antennas on it and I get a great signal, so I never thought about replacing it.
Hope this information is helpful to you!

  • What is the best DVD burner to buy for use with my Mac?

I have a MacMini with a DVD player/CD burner. I would like to buy an external DVD burner for use with the MacMini and my Tiger OS. Could I get some thoughts on purchasing a good external burner and using the best burning program with it. Thanks

$179.99 includes full version Toast 7
    $129.99 includes Toast 6 Lite
The $129.99 unit that comes with Toast 6 Lite can be found on the web for a lot less. Later, if you outgrow Toast 6 you can upgrade to Toast 8 (which is the latest version).

My experience with Lacie and Sony burners has always been positve and Toast is good to have around, it's always complimented iDVD well (in addition to having a host of other useful features).
    Note:
I'm not familiar with any of Toast 6 lite's features, but I do know you can burn DVD's with it. It adds another means of authoring a DVD outside of iDVD.

What are the best Voice to Text app's for use in classroom?

Hi I did download the software you suggested which you mentioned in in our iphone.

  • Switching to AT&T Cingular - best phone for use with Mac and iSync

    Dear Friends,
I am finally about to be free from Sprint's poor customer service. I will be switching to AT&T / Cingular. (Not quite ready to buy an iPhone, but don't want to be locked into a 2 year contract with another provider).
I want to use Apple's iSync. I have reviewed the list of compatible devices and scanned the forums for related topics.
    I'm still left wondering:
What is the best phone to get with AT&T for use with iSync?
I would like to sync contacts both ways. If possible, syncing cal events and to-dos would be nice, but not as important as contacts.
I prefer small flip phones. I don't plan to buy the Media pack service that includes text, web, etc. Instead, I will use the phone for calls and occassional text messages.
Sound quality and the ease of use are the most important features for me. I prefer raised keys to the flat keypads, but could give on this if need be.
Finally, using the phone as a modem with my laptop would be nice, but is not essential.
Thanks so much for any help you can offer.
    David

I am facing the exact same question regarding, e.g., the Nokia 6126. There are several references:
    1. Go to the Nova Media web site and look at their new product, Fone Link. Or their iSynch Plugins
    2. One of the forum threads references, http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20060915154526806
    3. Another link I found http://soapbox.co.nz/past/2007/4/9/nokia-6126-and-isync-revisited/
But what I don't yet understand is whether or not any of these suggestions/solutions are affected by the carrier. My understanding is that the 6126 is the North America Version of the 6131. But I talked to ATT/Cingular support yesterday and they make some modifications to the phone software. They don't know if the ATT 6126 will synch with a Mac. Of course they know the answer if synching with a PC (!!)

  • Best hard drive for use with Time Machine

    Hi,
Has anyone determined what the best external hard drive is for use with Time Machine? Is there a particular one that works exceptionally well with Time Machine, or is it much of a muchness?
I'm looking for a Firewire 400 & Firewire 800 drive that STAYS ON all the time, and doesn't automatically spin down or spin up like the rubbish WD My Book drives do.

I can't tell you if it is the "best" hard drive for you to use with TM, but I'm quite happy with the 500 GB Buffalo Technology DriveStation Combo TurboUSB I bought recently. It is quiet, quite inexpensive for the capacity (I paid about $120 for one on sale at Fry's), & completely compatible with OS X & TM.
Best of all for me, it automatically powers down when my iMac sleeps. It also spins down after a time if the Mac's Energy Saver preference "Put hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" is checked; otherwise it remains spun up until the Mac is put to sleep or switched off.
It comes with "Turbo" USB & Memeo "AutoBackup" software, neither of which I installed. (The box didn't claim these extras came in a Mac version but both Mac & Windows versions were included on the CD.) Out-of-the-box, I reformatted the drive with the Apple Partition Map scheme & two partitions, a 160 GB one for cloning my internal drive & the rest for TM. The drive works perfectly for both uses & seems quite fast, as one would expect from a 7200 rpm SATA drive.

  • Monitor Recommendations for Use with Captivate

Anyone have any monitor recommendations for use with Captivate? Size and resolution?

The formal adobe  recommendation is as posted 1024x768 is fine.
But, monitors are not that expensive, so for productivity and better work environment I recommend at least one wide screen 22" with resolution  1600X1200 or more  and that supports 1080 for video.
You need the  wide screen ( or  two monitors) so you can work with all the tools in one view.

  • Extract closed captions from OTA HD broadcast for use with DVD SP?

Hi, I'm out of my league here, trying to do a favor for a deaf friend. He will appear on a national TV show, and I'd like to capture his appearance and (if possible) burn it to DVD.
Of course, being deaf, he needs to see the closed captions.
What I've done so far is buy Elgato's eyeTV Hybrid. I can successfully capture HD broadcasts with their embedded closed captions (wow, is that gorgeous!).
I can use the eyeTV software to recompress the audio and video for DVD SP, but the captions don't end up anywhere that I can tell.
Is there any way to extract the closed captioning information for use with DVD SP?
    Thanks very much.

I don't think FCP will ever have captioning tools, due to it is a specilized area of post production and third party companies have developed captioning software that addresses this area.
I use the only Mac captioning software, (Mac Caption, made by CPC) that runs on the Mac. The cost for the SD captioning version of Mac Caption retail cost $6,995 USD and the HD version is an additional $2000.00 USD. If your an educational institution, then the price is about half the list, (price can be negotiated with the company at the time of purchase.)
As you can see, this is about half the cost of the FCP suite and I really don't think that Apple will ever get into this area. Most production companies rely on captioning services. In our case, we are an educational facility and therefore must comply with ferderal law, so we caption everything we do, thus why we had to purchase our own software.
The software we use, can do what it is that you are seeking, it can read the caption data from a live video image an convert it to a .scc file, that can be then used in DVD authoring or tape production. It can also read the raster area of a 720x 486 video file and also convert the caption information to a .scc file, as well as creating subtitlilng .stl files for DVD's.
It can also do original captioning, as well as add a text track to QT streaming files, which is how you caption QT steraming files. You can even burn captions into the video image of a steaming file.
Again, most production facilities are going to have to rely on a captioning service, but because we have to caption everything, and most captioning services don't caption QT streaming files, this was another reason we had to purchase our own captioning software.

  • My Samsung SE-S084F dvd burner, used with lion for months is now suddenly unsupported. Why?

My Samsung SE-S084F dvd burner, used with lion for months is now suddenly unsupported... how can it be possible? I can now read cd/dvd but trying to burn them gives me "Internal error". Disk Utility report: "Burn support: not supported".
I burned my last dvd three days ago, running lion 10.7.3. The only thing I can think of is a software update done few days ago, something about java.
Samsung says that lion isn't officially supported, but i've used it a lot and I know it works…
    Things that i've tried:
    1) reboot
    2) firmware update
    3) many different burning software including "drutil" from the shell
    4) I've tested the device on another computer (ubuntu 11) and it works like a charm
    Additional information (drutil info):
    Vendor          Product                          Rev
    TSSTcorp      CDDVDW SE-S084F      TS00
    Interconnect: USB
    SupportLevel: Unsupported
    Profile Path: None
    Cache: 1536k
CD-Write: -R, -RW, BUFE, CDText, Test, IndexPts, ISRC
    DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RAM, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW, BUFE, Test
    Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
    Any tips? Thanks.

Adding other info, it's getting even more weird...
I've tried booting from an old snow leopard backup, and surprise... the devise still doesn't work!!! same error!
    It doesn't make any sense...
It's not broken but both SL and Lion on my MBP refuse to burn DVDs (they both burned a lot of them with that device in the past).
Same thing using the other USB burner borrowed by a friend, so i'm sure it's not a cable problem... what does remain? Mac's USB hardware failure? Impossible. On my SL backup there was installed Parallels desktop with an old ubuntu virtual machine configured, i've tried burning from it and it worked...
OSX (LS or Lion) + My MBP + USB Burner = fail
Ubuntu + My MBP + USB Burner = success
Ubuntu + Another computer + USB Burner = success
The could be some "broken" low level hardware bounded parameters, used only by OSX. I've already wiped NVRAM and PRAM, are there any other things i can try to wipe?

  • What is the best software to use for screen capture on a PC for use with FCPX?

What is the best software to use for screen capture on a PC (windows 7) for use with FCPX? I've tried Camtasia and camstudio however the avi files cannot be imported by FCPX and the mov files produced by these programs are shown as just black screens in FCPX.

I use to face this issue every now and then (as a freelancer) when I use to cut on FCP7.
if the material is DV and was captured using Sony VEGAS, Premiere or Edius, the footage generally worked fine. You'll find most people will tell you to convert it regardless, however I found no issues working with them.
A problem you'll definitely face is HDV material. Most PC editing software write HDV in their own codec, which can't be read in FCP.
The only thing I can think of is to try converting HDV meaterial to QuickTime using something like MPEG Streamclip, or something similar.
    Good luck
