Best Log and Transfer choices for transfering Panasonic P2 media?

I am working on a documentary in Final Cut Pro 7.0.3.
Most of the footage is 1080 24p EX-1 and it is being edited within a ProRes422 timeline.
I have new interview footage, about 20 minutes shot with a Panasonic Varicam, and in the Log & Transfer window, under the P2 plug-in, it gives me various choices:
Native AVC Intra
DVCPRO HD
the flavors of ProRes including 422 standard, which is what my editing timeline currently is...
Are there any quality advantages by importing it natively (AVC Intra) and editing it within a ProRes TL? Or should I just import the Panasonic footage using ProRes 422 in L&T so it's a perfect match for my timeline?
Thanks for any advice on what offers the best possible quality...John

Did you shoot AVCIntra? Then bring it in as ProRes. Bringing it in NATIVE is faster, but there are no sequence settings for that format, so you'll always be rendering. And DVCPRO HD is 8-bit and anamorphic, so you'll be losing quality.
Just use ProRes 422.

  • Log and transfer error for large avchd file

The log and transfer proces for large (>15 min) avchd MTS files results in an error. The process is aborted and the destination prores 422 file disappears from the finder.
I shoot avchd MTS files with a Sony HXR NX5 onto SDHC 32Gb cards.
I copy the entire image to an attached disk.
In FCP6.0.6 I use log and transfer.
The process works flawlessly for smaller clips.
    The longer clips fail.
During the process I see the creation of a ProRes 422 MOV file and its growth. Before completion it ends in an abort.
In the log and transfer dialog I get a red octangle sign with an exclamation mark. I am not able to get the details of the error.
Q: what should I do to be able to use my longer clips?

All disks, internal and external (hardwired) are macosextended.
Have reset all prefs. Currently rerunning an 19 min import (will take over an hour).
If that fails, I will resort to setting ins and outs.
Thinking out loud, my sony NX5 produces MTS files of max 2Gb. If the clip is longer, it is split over multiple files on the SDHC.
FCP seems to recognise this artificial split. In L&T it combines the split files into a single clip.
Q: could it be that L&T stumbles over this artificial split of a clip?

  • Log and transfer stops for some reason

I just upgraded to FCE 4.0.1.
I am trying to Log and Transfer video that is AVCHD 720 30p.
I have FCE "easy setup" set to "HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 720p30".  I assume this is correct?
When I select a clip in Log And Transfer, put my in and out points, and choose "add clip to cue", the cued clip begins transferring and exactly 10 seconds later it just stops.  I tried to start over with a new project and it keeps happening.  Log and Transfer just stops.  No injesting.
And there are no clips showing up on my scratch disk.
    Help?

The AVCHD 720 30p was the camera info I was given.
I can't open the .MTS files with Quicktime or mpeg StreamClip so I'm unable to get any info from them.
When I select "get info" on the .MTS files (in a folder called "Stream", the attached screenshot shows this:

  • Can FCP log and transfer footage from the Panasonic full HD 1080p camcorder

Hi, my subject heading says it all. But I have read a review of the current consumer HD camcorders from Panasonic that says they have their own codec, and that it cannot be edited on any software but their own, which is not available in a Mac version... the review was a few months old, though, so hopefully Apple have now put in place updates so that we can ingest footage from this camera...
Does anyone know about this? If not, any idea where I can find out?
Thanks very much for any light on this situation!

Sorry if you didn't know about this, but the review says that when recording at 1080/50p Panasonic uses a proprietory codec... I assumed that would be any model they produce that records at 50p.
The review of the Panasonic HDC-TM700 states "The camcorder uses traditional AVCHD compression for every shooting mode other than the 1080/50p setting. (my emphasis)<
If the reviewer doesn't know, how would we? We're FCP geeks, not universal camera knowledge base wonks.
Research the codec specifically and the camera model you are likely to find some kind of hack or workaround. I have two Panasonic hdx170s and we have absolutely no issues bringing in full 1080 from the P2 cards but most of our stuff is shot 720.

  • Is there a XDCAM log and transfer plugin for FC EXPRESS???

I am working on a project using Final Cut Express, but this time the material was shot with an XDCAM, so I received it in two SD HC memory sticks. I have a Sony multi-card reader. Is there a XDCAM plugin for FCExpress??? If not, is there a way to convert the files to use them without having to upgrade to FCP??? Help!!!

  • Log and transfer MTS file and audio slip issues

I'm having 3 issues with a  30 minute project in FCE HD.
    1. When I create clips in log and transfer, sometimes my footage chatters when I watch in in the viewer or place it on the timeline.  It didn't chatter in camera, I checked, and it doesn't chatter in log and transfer. I can re-cut the clip in log and transfer but I'm trying to save time!
    2. When creating a clip in log and transfer or just transferring a full clip, FCE trims the last 3 to 4 seconds off.  I need these 3 to 4 seconds!
    3.  When trimming and razoring a 9 minute+ clip on the timeline, the audio begins to slip and continues to slip the longer I trim.
If anyone has answers to my three issues, please help.  This project is frustrating in content and now it's frustrating in editing!
Thank you in advance for all your help!!

Sorry it has taken so long for me to get back to you.  Again, thank you for taking the time to help me.
Your first question, these clips came from my Panasonic HMC 150 camera.  I filmed at 24 fps. I downloaded the files from my SD card to my laptop, then use log and transfer to bring the clips into the project.
FCE only offers 25 fps or 29.97 fps. So, there is a discrepancy there.  I'm not sure how to fix that when I want to stay with 24 fps.  Yes, I can film at other frame rates, I just prefer 24 for what I generally create.  Is there a plugin for more frame rate choices in FCE?  Or is that just available in FCP?
Your second question, I always use insert.  I only use overwrite for my title cards.
And finally, your third, I am aware of the destination tabs.  I understand how they work.  My issue with having so many tracks is that I am working on a laptop without a mouse and sometimes when I move a clip the timeline jumps and creates the extra tracks when I place the clip.  I just need to be more careful when moving clips.
Now, as to my final issue and that is the trimming of the clips through log and transfer.  FCE trims off the first and  last couple of seconds and will not allow me to bring them into the project.  Is this a setting problem or just inherent of FCE?
I look forward to hearing from you!

  • Unknown Error when I Logging and Transfer P2 Card files in FCP 6.0.6

I have been trying for the past two week to Log and Transfer P2 files to my external hardrive using FCP 6.0.6 unsuccessfully.
Originally I tried to Log and Transfer directly from the Panasonic HPX-170 in between my shooting. The first time it was a success but from then on I always get the same Unknown Error when attempting to transfer. When I encountered the Unknown Error during the second transfer I went on to create folders with the P2 contents on my external Hard Drive.
When I drag any of the P2 folder content on the Log and Transfer window I can see all the clips. I can successfully transfer small B-roll clips I have but any big size file (all my interviews) return an Unknown Error symbol at the end of the transfer. I believe this is probably why I didn't encounter any issues during my first time.
I tried deleting the preferences in FCP and then Logging and Transfer and it works if the systems settings are set for the Mac Pro but not for the external HD. The problem is I don't have enough space on my Mac. I have cleared 45GB of space but my P2 files total 54GB. I tried the same process with a Mac Power Book with FCP 5.1.4 and again in encounter the same problem.
The external HD is a 1TB Western Digital that I have used before with FCP for editing but never before with P2 files. Its in good working order and has 79GB free space remaining. Both the camera and the P2 cards (16GB and 4GB) are also performing as expected.
    I would appreciate any suggestions.

#36 - One or More P2 files failed to import.
Shane's Stock Answer #36 - "One or more clips failed to import..."
Very often in the field with this camera the camera operator will delete clips from the P2 card that they just don't like. That is the beauty of this camera. But, the still for that video file (located in the CLIP folder in the CONTENTS folder)...the still that you see when you are in the P2 Import window...is not deleted. So you will see the image, and the name, but the video file would have been deleted.
What you can do it compare the file names in the VIDEO folder and CLIP folder and see if anything is missing. If something is, then you know what the problem is. You can then just import the rest a few at time, skipping that one.
ALSO...in the P2 Import window...in the P2 Browser, there is a little sprocket drop down menu. Click on that and choose PREFERENCES. Uncheck REMOVE PULLDOWN and then try importing again.
ALSO...make sure your file names aren't too long. Try shortening them and see if that works.
ALSO make sure that the folders that contain the CONTENTS folder doesn't have any odd characters like /!@#$%^&*()?.

  • Log and Transfer Custom Path Problem

I've been ingesting clips from my Canon 7D using log and transfer. For the life of me I can't seem to get it to put the media on my external drives. It always wants to override my selection and send it to my main hard drive which quickly gets filled up and gives a warning. I come back an hour later and only 3 of my 81 clips have been logged and transferred.
I'm sure I'm missing a step somewhere. I open Log and Transfer, click the preference wheel (top right) select custom path, click on my external drive (sometimes I get the warning that media on these drives is not supported) and then select the clips, drag them to the bottom and walk away.
    Any suggestions?
    Kevin

Thanks Tom...so simple...sort of like "did you take the lens cap off?"

  • HDV log and transfer

Working in FCP 7.0.3 with an AJA IO/HD (which I hope is not an issue here).
    Easy Set-Up: HDV 1080i. Timeline is standard HDV 1080i – 1440 X 1080 frame size and pixel aspect ratio. HDV 1920 X 1080i compressor.
I am using a card and a reader to import footage via Log and Transfer.
The footage is being converted to ProRes but I'd like to keep it in HDV (client request). How do I change the import settings to keep the media in HDV?
    Many thanks in advance.
    OS 10.6.7
    Quicktime Pro 7.6.6

The camera, not sure of the model, also captures to SD cards and I've successfully transferred from the cards to FCP many times using Log and Transfer. For my own purposes, the files have been transcoded to ProRes, this by default. The client is interested in HDV, however, I'm looking for a way to import the files as HDV.
Thanks for helping to clarify, Christina.

  • Log and capture or Log and transfer?

I'm a newbie to FCP, I've been working at it and researching, so I have a basic understanding, been able to do some good stuff, now I'm looking to find more time-economical ways to do things.  I'm a football coach, looking to cut up game films into individual plays (1 play per clip), and ideally being able to name each clip by it's play name "Trap" or "Pop Pass" for example.  It looks like I need to get into logging if possible.  My workflow at present when dealing with an opponent's film is to take a DVD, and get it onto my computer using MPEG Streamclip.  I've been using DVC-PAL as a codec at someone's suggestion, I can't rmemeber where I got that.  Is this a mistake?  Anyhow, I now import that movie file into FCP using File>Import.  At this point I can't do any logging though, if I try Log and Capture or Log and Transfer I get "Unable to initialize video deck", though it tells me I can still use Capture Now.  Once it opens the Log and Capture window, I get "Error: this operation requires a controllable deck."  and directs me to the Audio/Video Settings.  Here's where I'm pretty much lost.  Do I try to adjust settings from here?  If so, to what?  Do I need to start by changing my MPEG Streamclip settings and then trying to match those up in my FCP Audio/Video Settings?  Or do I need to completely overhaul the way I'm approaching this?  ARGH!  I've been impressed with myself getting to this point, any help from here would be greatly appreciated, thanks all!

Log and Capture is used if you are capturing footage from tape based formats.  DV, HDV, HDCAM...others.
Log and Transfer is for tapeless camera systems.  P2, XDCAM, Canon DSLR, AVCHD.
If your footage comes from DVDs...and you convert the footage to QT files...then you simply go to FILE>IMPORT.  You don't log with this method.  Just import and work with the footage.

  • Log and Transfer in FCP7 from Firestore HD100

I recently did the upgrade from FCP6 to FCP7 in order to take advantage of the log and transfer capability for file based media. I have a JVC HD200 camera with a Firestore MR-HD100 drive attached. I have as yet had no luck at all getting FCP7 to recognize a file from the HD100 drive in any configuration.
Am I missing something or will the FCP7 log and transfer application not work with files generated with this drive?

No, we DO get the point. We know exactly what you want to do...you just chose a shooting format that doesn't do what you want to do. If you wanted that functionality you should have chosen to shoot on tape, P2, SxS, or SD card. Or used the firestore with a P2 camera and shot using the P2 file structure. You chose a camera that shoots directly to QT and therefore does not have that functionality.
As it is you have to retain all of the original file at full size and archive that.
Because you chose a shooting format in which you have to do that.
I chose the particular format because it offered me a specific set of features that suited my shooting needs.
What are those features that any other of the cameras that shoot to tape, P2, SxS or SD card don't offer?
That doesn't mean that I have to accept that Apple is not doing their job in covering all aspects of the professional film and editing world and making an interface addition that is substandard.
OK, name ONE NLE that would do what you want with the format you chose to shoot? Avid? Nope. Premiere...nope. Vegas? Nope. Edius? Nope. So is EVERYONE out there not doing their job in this case? No. You chose a format that is NOT suited to doing what you wanted to do. That is no ones fault but your own.

  • Log and transfer metadata

    Hi
I am ingesting into FSsvr using log and transfer. I am using the media metadata set with the addition of the FCP log and capture fields.
When I ingest clips i find that some of them (randomly it seems) do not appear to have the log and transfer metadata attached.
Any ideas what I am doing wrong?
    Thanks
    Dan

    Hi
thanks for getting back to me.
No, the metadata is only being logged as i ingest the clip using log and transfer. I click the clip, log my data in and hit the button which adds the clip to the queue.
I have been working on a solution and the following seems to work:
-log and transfer all my clips adding the metadata as I go
-verify all the clips are in the project bin - save the project locally
-verify all clips are inside the newly created production in the FCserver catalogue - some will have viewable metadata others, for some reason, do not!
-drag and drop the FCP project into the production on FCserver, bring it in.
-double click the FCP project and double click an asset within it (these should be automatically associated by bringing in the FCP project which was saved after LandC)
-click on the 'final cut pro logging' tab - the Metadata should be here, even if it isnt viewable on the asset itself - i.e before it was catalogued relevant to the FCP project.
This isnt ideal, but its a kind of work around for the time being.
i'm going to look into mapping my own metadata.
    Thanks
    Dan

  • Can't log and transfer with panasonic ag-hvx200p

I just bought a new macbook pro and installed Final Cut Studio 2 (I also have it installed on my Mac Pro, for about 18 months now). When I connect my Panasonic AG-HVX200P it is recognized on my desktop. However, when I start up FCP (version 6.0.1) I'm told it cannot locate an external device... but, it does recognize the camera when I go to the "log and transfer" function. It even loads all the clips and allows me to play them before I add anything to the queue. But when I actually select clips to be added to the queue the status wheel spins for a few seconds and then stops... and that's it, just stops.
The weird thing is my Mac Pro DOES allow me to successfully add video clips to the queue. The only thing I can think of right now is, maybe, I have a bad firewire cable for the MacBook Pro. It uses a 4-pin to 9-pin, and the Mac Pro uses the other sized connection (sorry, I don't know it).
    Thanks,
    Eric

    Hello Eric,
2 things that come to my mind :
I guess you have pressed the Camera button (next to the MCR/VCR) long enough to initialize the "drive".
You should absolutely transfere all files before doing any log and capture to a hard drive. Don't use the "Finder" but a transfer software from Panasonci or anyone else. Don't do it directly from the cam.
    Hope that helps,
    /Max

  • Log and Transfer with Panasonic HD

Recently I purchased the Panasonic HDC-HS 100, which is a hybrid SD card/HDD, (AVCHD). I use the Mac OS X (10.4.11) with Final Cut Pro 6.0.5. I am having problems importing my footage onto my computer. When opening the log and transfer window in FCP, it does not recognize the camera (error messages indicate there is an invalid directory structure). Also, the media has been saved to my computers hard drive. How do I get this footage on my computer so I can start editing! Thanks for the help.

Do you have an external card reader? Or are you playing back from the camera? When you copied the contents of the card to the computer, did you copy the whole card, or just the video clips? You have to copy the ENTIRE card, as is. Create a folder on your external hard drive and name it P2(name of project)#. So if you have 3 cards you used for the project "My Haircut" you would have 3 folders named
    P2myHaircut-1
    P2myHaircut-2
    P2myHaircut-3
That is just a sample naming scheme. You can use what you want, just be consistent so you can find your footage easily. Then, mount your SD card on the desktop, open it, select all, and drag to the appropriate folder. Make sure you select all. Then, open Log and Transfer, go to the upper right corner of the Log and Transfer browser and click on the drop down button. You will see a choice that says Create Custom Path. Click that, then locate the Folder you just created. Click once on that folder and then "choose". DON'T choose the internal folders, just choose your P2myHaircut# folder. You should see your clips pop up in that browser. If this doesn't work, you may be missing a component for that camera. Honestly, I don't know anything about your camera, but that is the process for Log and Transfer.

  • I need to know best way to edit MXF files, with least rendering, is that converting the MXF or Log and Transfer? the end product is dvd, but I have lots and lots of these projects to do.

I am about to comence my Edit, and was told of Mpeg Streamclip, however this doesn't seem to work with my Canon XF305 Clips, the reason I was told to use it was so I wouldn't have to Render in Final Cut Pro all the time.. I do have the Canon Disc with the Plug in Utility and the update from their site.
Is it best to Convert these MXF files first and import them into FCP or use 'Log and Transfer', so far I am unable to do either!!
The projects on the timeline will have introduction .Movs already on it as a Template to re-use again and again with the new Footage ( MXF Files ) to be added and edited with transitions etc..This process is repeated again and again but with different MXF clips each time.
I am looking for the quickest and best way for workflow as there are 80 or more projects to do, each with 10 or so clips to be added to the timeline and Exported for DVD...Will I have to then Compress to fit onto DVD's??
I know Streamclip is an Mepeg 2 app but I thought the Canon XF305 Shot as mpeg2....
Is Log and Transfer my only Option?
Basically I need to know the quickest for Render purposes, and of course, the best way so the files aren't so huge etc etc.
Please, any suggestions would be greatly received....

We only work with PR422 files in FC7.  We use Shane's workflow with all 5D & MXF footage.
Make your life easier and stick to the ProRes family for your footage and edit sequences. Avoid H264 & convert any you have to ProRes.
Unless you are considering Blu-Ray the only way to deliver video on a DVD is to convert it to SD.
Depending on the length of your show you can make a Blu-Ray in Compressor but you have very limited authoring options when compared to DVD Studio Pro.
Compressor can also convert your HD to SD mpg-2 & Ac3 files. The best results usually come from setting the frame controls in the mpg-2 setting of Compressor to best. Depending on the the length of the show and your Qmaster settings this can take quite a while.
I personally find Compressor's HD to SD DVD conversion varies. Sometimes it is wonderful and sometimes not so much. I prefer the following as it is usually is faster and very consistent.
Export a quicktime movie (not QT conversion) of your final sequence
Import the exported HD file back into FC.
Create a SD 16x9 sequence and then drop in the recently exported HD seq and render. Rendering the sequence basically has FC doing the HD to SD conversion. Export the SD sequence and then convert to mpg-2 & ac3 in Compressor. While this does take time I still find it faster than Compressor with Qmaster utilizing all cores.
Another option is using jobs in Compressor
    http://pixelcorps.cachefly.net/macbreak-154-540p-h264.mov
In this workflow you would have Compressor convert the HD file to SD and then through jobs convert the SD file to mpg2 & Ac3.
In theory the jobs version could be faster (based on a number of variables- length, Qmaster, etc) but I haven't had time to compare the two.
