Best Mac for working in Photoshop CS5?

I currently have a Macbook pro from 2004, I've recently updated to Lion and cleaned out my computer to have around 145GB free space. It has a 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor and 2GB Memory. I work extensively in Photoshop CS5 and have problems with it running very slowly and sometimes crashing. Upgrading and cleaning out my computer have had no effect so I'm thinking about upgrading to a newer computer, either a macbook pro and an iMac. I really don't know much about hardware and I am not sure what I need to look for to make sure the computer will run Photoshop faster. I am assuming the processor would be the most important? Can anyone help me out in reccomending which model I should go for? And what specifically will make my computer run Photoshop fast? Thanks so much !

Your problem stems form upgrading CS5 to 10.7 without first checking, CS5 Photoshop has issues in 10.7, it's being rewritten and there is a CS6 Pre-release that works for 10.7.

GO back to Snow Kitty 10.6 for now on a DU Zero Erased drive under 50% filled,  wait it out until CS6 and works on a new 10.8 machine released after this summer, make your hardware software RAM decision then, likely 15" or better.
10.7 is 64 bit like 10.8 will be, so little changes to 10.8 CS6 will be needed to work.

  • Which iMac for use with Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom

Any opinions on which iMac is best for use with Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom. Not sure if the 2.7 i5 with 512 graphics card is Plenty of power or if upgrading to the 3.1 i5 or 3.4 i7 is a wiser choice given the price differences. Appreciate the help

So I was reading over your post, and even though this is older and has to do with CS5, I have some information for CS6 that will be relevant to your question now that it is time to upgade the software. In general Photoshop has always been more about RAM than Processing power, though that is important too. Until CS5 it could never quite take advantage of what multi-core processors really had to offer, and even the graphics card didn't really effect much of it outside of certain features and the 3D optio
Now that is no longer true and Adobe can effeciently use all aspects of the computer to give you much better performance.
So much so that I was able to buy a brand New ASUS with the following specs:
    Dual Core 2.2GHz Processors
8GB of RAM (4GB original to the machine)
Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit OS
    320GB HDD w/ 5400RPM
This machine not only runs photoshop CS6 and Launches in less than 5 Seconds... it can run Premier and After Effects as well, and this Laptop cost me less than $400 (on sale at Best Buy 2 Weeks Ago. You don't have to buy something this cheap, but isn't it great that you can and still run Master Collection effectively?

  • What's the best Mac for running Final Cut Pro X?

Title says it all. What's the best Mac for running Final Cut Pro X? I'm not looking to make a feature length hollywood film. But I'd like to be able to edit video without lag.

Yes. Begin with the fastest processor / graphics card / and as much RAM as you can afford. (As all three will become obsolete over time.)
I started from scratch. I have a 27-inch iMac with a 3.4 G Intel Core i7. (currently the fastest processor for an iMac) I also ordered the best graphics card--AMD Ratheon HD. I ordered 16G of RAM, but recently added more RAM to equal 24G. (OWC makes good after-market RAM for iMACs.)
Last, I ordered a flash drive / SATA hard drive combo.  (250G on flash / ITB on SATA). The OS and all of my applications run off the flash drive. (for fast start up!)
I put all of my media and FCP projects onto the SATA hard drive.
Now, I had the option to order a 2TB SATA. But, I realized I can always buy more external storage as I edit more and more projects. ALSO! FCPX is GREAT when it comes to editing projects on external drives! I can segregate an entire project and its media files onto a removeable drive. I simply launch FCPX, plug in the drive and--poof!--I'm ready to edit. It sees the project and the media right away. When I'm done editing, I can then send this drive to another editor (also using FCPX) or attach it to my MacBook if I want to edit the same project in the field.
This has worked for me. I wish you luck.

  • What is the best Mac for gaming?

Ok so as the title says, I was wondering what is the best Mac for gaming, I would like to play at least some old games which I have laying around the house when I'm at the airport or whatever. I read that macs are not that good at gaming but they do work at some degree :P
Also I was wondering, me and my friend were arguing why is a Mac not considered a PC. I my arguments where that a PC means it has all that nasty, heavy, big hardware, with all the cards and stuff and that a mac just has the slick monitor with some stuff in it :P and a keyboard/mouse. His arguments were that even if macs only have the stuff mentioned above, it should still be considered a PC since it is afterall a Personal Computer.
Thanks a lot and hopefully you'll settle my argument and aswear my question.

Best computer for gaming is always the one with the highest specs. But generally speaking, a base macbook does ok. The major piece you need to increase FPS on a mac is a video card though, so generally the Pros or iMacs will be a better choice.
Your friend is right, PC = Personal Computer. Mac's run the exact same hardware as a PC, just run different OS's. But its a term that got misplaced with windows in the flame wars of every forum post. P.S. Mac pros are a tower with no screen, just like the traditional windows ones.

  • Best mac for ae6?

what is the best mac for ae6?

While I prefer Macs to PCs, I would suggest that unless/until Apple updates their MacPro line, you will get significantly better bang for your buck with a PC. Windows 7 is actually a great operating system and it works really well with Adobe products, so don't worry about the platform not being stable. Lenovo and HP both make great workstations.
If you are dead set on a Mac, Rick's advice is spot on.

  • Best Practice For Working on Composite In Team

    Hello,
I would like to know what is the best practice for working on a single composite by mutiple members in a team.
We have a core services module wherein a single composite contains many services. So, to complete in time, we would like many members to work on it simultaneously.
In such scenarios, if some one adds a new adapter or some other services, composite.xml changes.
Saving it would override other member's changes. Also, it is not possible to apply lock simultaneously on the same file through some version control mechanism.
Please let us know what should be the best practice in such scenarios.
    Thanks-
    Ashish

You can very well use a version control software with JDev. You may refer -
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/articles/soa/jimerson-config-soa-355383.html
I think without version control mechanism (like subversion) it won't be easy to work in a multi-developer environment. If you really don't have a source and version control mechanism then manual merging will be required which may be error prone and time & effort consuming.

Seems to be ok especially if you enlarge the object before you copy it into photoshop.
I think what you are pasting (never bothered to try this) is just the screen preview, hence the need to enlarge. Why would you waste your time doing that instead of exporting to a high-res PDF?

  • I work with photoshop CS5 and the stamp is very slow. Why?

I work with photoshop CS5 and the stamp is verry slow. Why?

If you can afford it, go with a Crucial M4 SSD.
If your in a limited budget, go with a Seagate Momentus XT 750GB.
The SSD will be the fastest one and the Seagate being faster than a conventional drive.
If you decide to go conventional, avoid the Western Digital Scorpio Blue.  They tend to have issues with Macbooks.

  • What's the best Mac for Photoshop?

I daily work on layered photoshop files, up to 10 (ten) GB. I currently have a G5 with 8 gb of ram. I finally can afford to upgrade to a faster computer and need to figure out if the 8core 2.93GHZ at $5,899 is the best buy for me. The 8 core 2.26GHZ is $3299. For an additional $2500 I would need to know that I will get at least 15% increase in speed. I remember back in the day when I picked out the fastest g5, when I later compared it to a slower G5, the difference in speed was barely noticeable, and when I upgraded to 8GB of RAM I discovered that photoshop could only take advantage of 2 GB.
Does photoshop benefit from 8core vs 4 core?
Will an 8 core 2.26ghz be faster than a 4 core 2.93GHZ when working in photoshop?
Is there something new coming out, so I would benefit from waiting with my purchase?

I work on big files, tho not that big.
For many of the time-critical things I do in Photoshop seem to be single-processor, so even tho I have an 8-core machine, often only one is being used. This includes things like flatening and saving. So I am not sure that (unless you have other programs running) you would ever see an advantage to more than 4 cores.
What I do notice when I work with big files, is that I keep a copy of Activity Monitor open, and whenever the green sector in memory goes to zero, my computer becomes unusably slow, and I usually reboot. I don't understand memory managment on the Mac, but whatever "inactive" means, it really means "swap yourself to death". So I have 14GB of RAM on my computer, and I usually don't run out even when dealing with big files. But I know that 8GB would not have been enough. Photoshop may not use more than 2GB, but it and the OS can cache materials and when those caches get too big, my computer comes to a halt. With your files, you may find 32GB to be useful.
What I have done is to burn a CD or DVD with one big psd/psb file and walk down to my local Apple Store. The machines there don't have much RAM, but you can get some feeling for 4 cores vs. 8 cores. Reboot them before you do anything.
One thing I would strongly recommend you do not try is what I did with my old G5--install a RAID. It only increased opportunities for losing files, and while it certainly sped up many file operations, I don't think any Photoshop operations were affected at all.

  • Dear Mac Pro upgrade hardware & Photoshop CS5 64 bit speed experts...

I'm an illustrator that works w/ brushes(can they ever get fast enough ?) in PS CS5 and, at times, some very large files:
Mac Pro  2 x 3 GHz Quad-core Intel Xeon ("early 2008"), 20 GB or RAM
    OS 10.6.6 Running in 64bit
Boot(system only) drive: 60 GB OWC Mercury Extreme SSD
Data drive(user folder): 860 GB Striped RAID - from 3 partitions of 3 7200 RPM drives
Scratch drive: 96 GB Striped RAID - from 3 partitions of 3 7200 RPM drives
Storage drive: 1 TB (includes time machine partition)
What is my next "biggest bang for the buck" hardware move for speed of PS CS5 (done lots of reading on the software prefs/settings)?:
Is it still more memory - 24 GB?
Or a single OWC SSD drive for data(120 GB -- I can dump a lot more items in data to storage HD)?
Or a smaller OWC SSD for scratch?
    Thank you!
    T

Mac Pro 2 x 3 GHz Quad-core Intel Xeon ("early 2008"), 20 GB or RAM
3GHz in 2006 is not the 2.8GHz 2010. But if 20GB works for you, adding an SSD boot drive, and an SSD for scratch might be good investments for now instead. 5365 (Woodcrest 8-core) are still a little expensive.
DDR3 is of course faster, more bandwidth, and not having to deal with FBDIMMs.
    $3100 for 3.33 4-core / 3-4 x 8GB for 24-32GB RAM might not be best investment.
Booting in 64-bit mode pays a dividend.
Barefeats has gone head to head with 2008s 2.8/3.0/3.2 vs the newest Mac Pro 2009/2010s.
The nice thing is that CS5 has only lately begun to catch up to Snow Leopard, and there will be another round of catch-up if you want a year with Lion and whenever CS6 (which will be better optimized).
You can't add 5870 and gain much (not the PCIe 2.0 bandwidth) or Quadro 4000 (wrong EFI firmware). PCIe 3.0 is probably another year plus away.
People that went from 2006 to 2008 felt the difference even though that too was "small" it was 2.8GHz but 8-core.

  • Best Mac for my money...

    I'm currently using a Mac Pro 1,1.
    Processor  2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory  16 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
    Graphics  ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB & a GeForce 8800 GT
Storage 3 1.5 TB 7200rpm disks (not raided, honestly don't know much about RAID...) and 1 2TB Time Machine HD
    Running Lion.
I also own the first unibody 17inch MacBook Pro but suing FCP on it is like kicking myself in the face. It works but it's not fun, it's great for other stuff though.
It's a great machine, but it's obviously old and underpowered. FCX works but it's a slooooooow process doing much of anything in it. So I have a couple options right now given yesterdays updates, etc.
    1) Buy a new Mac. So lets say I have between 2-4 grand to spend. Whats the best bang for my buck here? Can I keep my old Mac Pro and use it to cluster render? Do I get a new Mac Pro (I understand even the "new" ones are still old machines basically) or get a iMac or the newest Macbook Pro and an external monitor?
    2) Upgrade the processor in my Mac Pro 1,1. I can get the Xeon 5365's for about 3-4 hundred on ebay. Hatter mentioned this might be a good thing despite having 3 or 4 local techs tell me I'm crazy to even consider it.
    3) Just trudge along till a revamp of the Mac Pro comes out. I mean, I'm making it but time is money and I know I could be working faster than this, although I guess I don't really know how much faster a new Mac Pro will make FCX move.
I'd appreciate any feedback, you guys rock.

    >one of the CS5 suites
Well, if the OP doesn't have $$ for a new computer, I doubt there is $$ for CS5 Production Premium, and certainly not CS5 Master Collection
As far as CS4... I really don't think it will run very well on that computer, since my previous computer was similar and would just barely run CS3
That computer is certainly not going to be able to edit HD video very well, if at all, and will be slow (see my 1st reply) even with SD video
I still think Premiere Elements is a better choice
    And, to the OP

  • Pen Pressure not working in Photoshop CS5.1

    Hello,
I've looked at a lot of questions and answers concerning pen pressure in this forum, and I've tried a lot of things to fix this problem. I have a Genius MousePen 6x8 and use Photoshop CS5.1. It's been a while since I used my tablet, but it used to work before. I rebooted my computer a while ago, so I installed the new driver from the Genius website. The tablet is working fine, even the pen pressure, but for some reason it just won't work in Photoshop. I've tried to fix it by resetting the Photoshop settings by using the Ctrl+Shift+Alt, I've reset the brush tool, I've played around with the brush options and nothing has worked.
Here is the image of the pen pressure working:
And here is the image of the settings for the brush and the pen pressure not working:
    Thank you for your time!

Your tablet driver isn't reporting pressure correctly.
The knockoff tablet drivers usually need to be revised for each new version of Photoshop (and we have no idea why).
Contact your tablet maker to see if they have updated drivers to fix their bugs.

  • Edit: Touchscreen not working with photoshop cs5

When using photoshop cs5, I am unable to use any tool properly when using the touch screen.
Using the touchscreen, I am able to select the tool and other buttons, but when i attempt to draw with the brush tool, dragging a stylus across the screen does not create a line, and only visual feedback is seen. Dots can be drawn, ad the only way a line can be created is to double-click and drag which does not always work and is irritating to use.
Please help, I have tried searching for a long while and even contacted computer support but they directed me here. I am unable to find a suitable driver, as suggested on the troubleshooting page or any other solution. Any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks.

This have been touch on many times here.  There are two api use to support touch type devices like tablets and touch screens. The API that many touch screen tablet and computers use lack features Adobe Pen support uses example the API does not support things like pen tilt. Therefore Adobe does not support this API.  You need a device driver for you touch screen that user the API Adobe uses for tablet support.
