Best MacBook for a med student (5 years)

I'm currently looking to buy a laptop for my course in college and preferably the one I choose would last for as much of my degree as possible, a bit over 5 years. My main concern then is longevity and I'm trying to choose accordingly.
At the moment I'm thinking of getting the 13-inch 2.7GHz Retina MacBook Pro with 128GB storage. I also want to upgrade the RAM to 16GB so that it'll still be able to keep pace with software a few years down the road.
In terms of budget I'm trying to keep it reasonable (i.e. I'm not going to max out all of the specs just for the sake of it) but at the same time this is a bit of an investment and if there's an upgrade that could potentially buy the laptop another year or two of life it'll be worth it. Do you think this setup is decent? Do you think 128GB is enough, considering that in terms of usage I'd usually have 2 or 3 games and for my documents and other media I'd be happy to supplement the SSD with external storage? I don't think I'll update the CPU but any opinions on that would also be more than welcome.

I’ve maintained that the two primary upgrades to seriously consider are RAM and SSD. Obviously there’s no way to upgrade the RAM and given that the last notebook 3rd party vendors offered an SSD upgrade for was the 2013 it is safe to assume there will be no SSD upgrade coming. Your decision to upgrade RAM is a good one. Frankly I think you would be wrong not to upgrade to the 256GB SSD. I’ve played the “I don’t have enough space so I have to improvise” game and I repeatedly lost. Granted, the 13” rMBP has an SD slot so you can improvise additional storage with an SD card - and there are flush mounting SD cards for just that purpose. I used one myself - and I had a 256GB SSD on my MBA. As a student you are going to have all kinds of book files on your computer and I wouldn’t be surprised given what you’ll be studying if they aren’t picture and diagram heavy which will be bigger than your typical eBook. Add some music, a couple videos and poof, 128GB is gone.

without sounding condiscending i would get the cheapest macbook you can find, probably a refurb from apple or some other reputable store.
by doing it this way you could have some warranty if something should go wrong.
for what you are going to use it for you dont need anything special, all macs are built to a high standard. i would look at the older aluminum unibody models, they are very sturdy and well equipped for what you need.

I've never had a Mac before, I have an iPhone but have never owned or used a MacBook but I hear they're the best for graphics, etc. Which MacBook out of the all would be the best for designing and video making, etc?

I have a late 2011 MBP with 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD - it may not be as fast as the most expensive Retina model, but it's pretty close. I use the Adobe CS6 Design & Web Premium suite but I'm not much into video editing. However, were I you...
I'd get the top-of-the-line non-Retina MacBook Pro and opt to spend the extra $100US on the HD antiglare screen. You can upgrade the RAM to 16GB yourself and, if you decide that the drive that comes with it is just too slow, you can always upgrade to a SSD. I'd also look at a good external monitor for your 'home' studio - I have the Apple Thunderbolt Display (which I've not even taken out of the box yet) but I'd ask for recommendations for a less expensive monitor if you don't need all the extra ports on the ATD.
That's my recommendation - video editing can take a toll on the CPU and, particularly, the hard drive. That's why I recommend the fastest processor you can get and the possible move to a SSD.

Best MacBook for Creating Video

I need help choosing the best MacBook for creating sports videos using either iMovie or Final Cut. I currently us a Mac Mini but I want to purchase a laptop to be more mobile.

Any layer may be replaced with new footage by simply selecting the layer you want to replace in the composition, then selecting the new footage in the project panel, then holding down the Alt/Option key and dragging the new footage to the composition.
If you want to automate the process of replacing footage you'll have to use a script.
If you want to use a project as a template then simply copy the template file in it's folder and paste it into a folder that contains the same structure as the template. IOW, the folders should look like this:
Template Project
     >template.aep
     >Footage
New project
     >copiedtemplate.aep
     >Footage
Your footage has to have the same filename as the original template project.
You can also save an AE project as a template (aet) project. That's what they are doing on siges like Video Hive. The template isn't easily overwritten so it maintains the work. Then you simply add your footage using the first technique that I talked about.

What software do you intend to use? What formats will you acquire, edit, output?
Do you intend to make money from this or is it a hobby?
If you intend to make money from your efforts, do you have a capitalization plan and have you talked to your banker? Do you have a business plan in place that has been vetted by knowledgeable people?
Head down to your local library and pull anything you can find in the business section regarding starting a small business then read what ever you can get your hands on about video production. Then, walk over to the public access channel and sign up for one of their "intro to video" sessions.
Honestly, the speed of the laptop is the least of your concerns.
On the other hand, if this is just a way to play, purchase whatever you want.

Go to an Apple Store and try what is available, it is not a big range. Any model would do the job, all you need is good external storage.

MacBook graphic chip is not good enough for 3D graphs.

Best Macbook for student: MB or MB Air?

Sorry in advance if this kind of question has been asked before!
I'm a student looking to buy either a Macbook or Macbook Air and was wondering if people thought the Air was 'future proof' or powerful enough or if the MB is portable enough.
I've used an Air before but it seems to be a bit sluggish and the fact that the RAM is not upgradeable is a bit of a downside. Having said that, it is obviously very portable and is ideal if carrying around all the time...is the MB light enough to carry around all the time? I'm going to be using this as my main Mac and I don't use any major software like Photoshop etc.

As a student, I would get the MacBook White. For $999, you get all of the amenities and a standard Superdrive in a compact 5 pounds. I carry my MacBook around with me all the time, and it's very protable.
Now, if you want a bit more power and a lighter Aluminum case, opt for the new Unibody MacBook. Perfect for carrying around, fast, and with great graphics. Just be wary if you need to use anything with Firewire; the Unibody has no FW port.
I wouldn't get an Air. Not upgradeable, slow, one USB port, no Ethernet port, no Optical Drive. You'll spend $1799-$1999 on an Air, then $99 if you need an optical Drive, $19 if you need an External Ethernet or Modem, and $30 on a USB hub if you need to connect more accessories. For me, it doesn't make sense when you can get all of this for $1000 in a package only two pounds heavier.
As a student myself, I'm thinking about replacing my aging 1st generation MacBook with a new MacBook White.

Keep in mind that while the laptops may not be preinstalled with a "required" operating system, you can install a more suitable OS yourself.
There's a good chance you can get a SIGNIFICANT student discount through your school on the "required" OS since it's a relatively uncommon variant that most students aren't going to have.
For example, I think my girlfriend got copies of Windows XP for something like $10-20 through her school while she was a student. I can get MS Office Professional for personal home use for around $20 through my employer.
It is possible to get VERY good (legitimate) deals on Microsoft software through employee discounts or student discounts.

Best Macbook for Photoshop

I want to buy a new Macbook that will support and run Photoshop well, without freezing up or slowing down while using the program. I have been looking at the MacBook Pro, but do not know if it's necessary to buy the 15 inch or if the 13 will do. The guy I spoke with on their customer support recommended getting the 15 with 16GB, but I was just wondering if that's necessary or not. Any suggestions are appreciated! Thank you!

Let me add to this. My daughter is a graphics art student. She had to run photo shop and several other programs for her class work. She was using at the time. A 2009 Imac quad core 2.66 and 16 GB memory,1TB drive and it used it all.I believe the graphics card was a ATI 6750 with 512MB memory.
She even had a 1TB external drive. If you are going to use a MBP, you need the one with all the power you can get.

I've been saving up to finally get a MacBook after having a pro during university (stupidly it got soaked in my bag during a thunderstorm and didn't have any insurance on it). However, I'm trying to save as much money as I can so can't afford the high end laptops.
All I need for the MacBook to do is run the following programs without it becoming slow in the long run:
Adobe Photoshop CC
Adobe Dreamweaver CC
Adobe InDesign CC
Microsoft Office Home & Business
The basic system requirements for the Adobe CC programs are:
Multicore Intel processor with 64-bit support
Mac OS X v10.7, v10.8, or v10.9
2GB of RAM
3.2GB of available hard-disk space
1280x1024 display with 16-bit video card
QuickTime 7.6.6 software required for HTML5 media playback
All I need it for is templating and editing newsletters as well as creative posters/flyers/brochures.
I'm deciding whether I should just get the basic 13-inch MacBook Air, 13-inch Macbook Pro (with Retina display) or 2.5GHz Mac mini? Bear in mind that I'll have to purchase the Micrsoft Office program (approx. £157 on Amazon) & get a screen/keyboard/mouse with the Mac Mini).
I have around £1,000 to spend and really unsure as to what to buy.
Please note, I am not interested in buying a Windows equivelant (as I cannot stand Windows 8/8.1).

Any of those Macs will meet the basic specs for Office and Adobe. The real question is how you configure what you buy, based on how you are going to use the programs. The system requirements listed are definitely basic. They are about as basic as saying that you could buy a 2-seater Smart Car as your transportation: You could, but you'd be very limited in what you could do.
If you are going to run any one program at a time, the base model of any of those Macs (4GB RAM) will be fine. But working on newsletters and flyers, for efficiency's sake you will probably have more than one program open at a time: Word for preparing text, Photoshop for preparing photos, and Dreamweaver or InDesign where you lay it all out, going back and forth between them. That increases your RAM needs. 8GB would be a good place to be, but if you can afford to buy with the maximum amount of RAM that would help future-proof the Mac (since future versions of software always need more RAM, not less).
Having more RAM is more critical if you plan to use Photoshop for fancy stuff like cameras with lots of megapixels, raw editing, panoramas, HDR, or 3D. If you are just doing basic photo editing, 8GB RAM is fine. The other software you listed doesn't need as much RAM so more than one of them will run fine together under 8GB RAM.
If you get a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, they start with only 128GB storage and it cannot be upgraded. That might not be enough space in the long run if you use a lot of graphics files and photos, so think about specifying at least 256GB storage in whatever you buy if your newsletter projects are large and you don't want to store them on external drives. The Mac mini starts out with a nice big hard drive.
What it will probably come down to is, spec out all three models you are considering with at least 8GB RAM and as much storage as you will need during the life of the computer, then pick the one that fits your budget. If you need portability, cross off the Mac mini.

I recommend the 15-inch MacBook Pro if you can afford it. That's because Photoshop runs better on a dedicated graphic card, which only the 15-inch MacBook Pro includes, but it should run without any problem on a 13-inch MacBook Pro too

Hi, I am already use to using Apple as I have other products from them, including an IMac. However I am not sure which MacBook to get, whether the Pro or Air. I will be using it for general use at home and about, but also for school work. The Air is lighter, but the Pro has the better specs. It will depend an little on if you want more portability or more power.
By definition the MacBook Air has lower general specs than the Pro. Graphics will not matter much with light school work and general usage. But as a rule of thumb, the Pro gets the better cards.
You may be o.k with an air, but if you can afford the Pro, go with the Pro.
