Best Maintance Utility to Buy

I regret I cannot decide which thread to post this so it may require re-assignment by the moderator. Each person I ask has a different preference of program, depending upon his individual need.
Is there a comparative study/analysis on all, or most, of the available utility programs for Mac X OS 10.4.7? I've used Norton, Tool Tech, Drive 10 et al but each has its limitations, one focusing on a single task over another at the expense of another task.
I'd like to get an analyis of the positive and negative points for each, or feedback from those who prefer one program over another, with a terse explanation of the reasons for their preference.
Thank you kindly for any counsel you can give me.

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
The most important maintenance program your computer can get is a backup program as my FAQ explains:
http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Mac OS X does most of its own maintenance. But if you don't have a backup, any of that maintenance could be for not as the hard drive could fail, or you could accidently misplace data, or the machine could get stolen.
As was stated, Norton Utilities is not available in a truly Mac OS X compatible version.
The advantage of Disk Warrior 3.0.3 is its ability to repair the directory. Though if your hard drive is dying it could cause its premature death. Apple's Disk Utility on your installer disks for Mac OS X has a Repair Disk function which does a very rudimentary Disk Directory repair. fsck is a built-in Disk Directory repair which is basically available to you when you don't have a disk with a directory repair program on it. See my http://www.macmaps.com/directoryfaq.html
The advantage of Techtool Pro 4.0.4 or later, is that it is a good hardware diagnostic utility which can supplement the Apple Hardware Test utility you get with your computer's restore disk.
The advantage of Techtool Deluxe 3.0.4 which comes when you buy AppleCare (sometimes an earlier version is shipped by mistake, so make sure you have the latest version when you get it) and Drive 10 (not sure which version if any of Drive 10 is Tiger compatible, but you need Deluxe 3.0.4 for Tiger) is that it is like Techtool Pro but simpler its diagnostic capabilities.
Neither Pro, nor Deluxe, or nor the Apple Hardware Test are able to diagnose all hardware issues, nor always detect bad RAM. But if any does, you can believe the RAM is bad.
Macjanitor is a free download with a nice graphical user interface to the management of Mac OS X's built-in logfile maintenance that happens if your machine is on in the middle of the night. I don't recommend doing any cache file maintenance as people have been known to create situations where cache files corrupt on their own with such maintenance programs. Until the reason for that is known if you think you have cache trouble here, ask here first how to repair it after you know your data is backed up properly.
Prosoft Data Rescue can if the directory isn't too badly munged recover information from dying hard drives that don't otherwise show in other utilities. But it would be better if you have a backup than have to rely on this program.

i don't have any experience with DLNA TV's but i recently moved my iTunes library to a NAS. streaming content to airport express remote speakers and TV2 works great. however, i have all my gear hardwired to my time capsule (except the airport express) so i'm not sure how well streaming e.g. HD movies to TV over wifi works.
i have a Synology DiskStation 411j and am very happy with it.

You would have to web-order directly from Apple. Retail stores and resellers usually do not stock refurbs. All the Macs in our family that are in current use are refurbs and have provided excellent service. None have arrived with any cosmetic defects.

  • What is the best audio interface to buy to record drums?

What is the best audio interface to buy to record drums?  Looking for something with 8 inputs to mic my drum kit.  Don't want to go past $1,000.  Been looking at the Presonus Firestudio and M-Audio Profire 2626, for example.  This is my first time setting up a home studio so any suggestions would be appreciated!
    Thanks.

The MOTU interfaces are a good value, and as Pancenter notes, they have rock-solid drivers.  I've had good experiences with the Traveler, although I'd bypass the mic pres if possible.
And if you're able to spend a bit more, the Metric Halo 2882 also has excellent drivers and noticeably-better sound--it's my fave in the <$2k range.  If you can find a used Apogee Ensemble, that's another great-sounding interface, although it can't match the latency performance of the MOTU or Metric Halo.  So, for software instruments, the Ensemble is not a good choice, but for recording acoustic drums, a used one for $1300-1500 would be excellent.

  • Best audio gear to buy for adobe audition to make audiobook & podcast & elearning screencast ?

what is the best audio gear to buy for adobe audition to make audiobook and podcast and screencast video tutorials?
I will work alone with one microphone only in my bedroom.
    Thanks

I'll assume that initially you won't want to spend a fortune, but also, you won't want stuff that you will later regret purchasing. And to do this sensibly, you'll want to spend a bit more money on the microphone than on the external sound device.
For a microphone, you could do a lot worse than to get a Rode NT1-A complete vocal recording solution. With the kit, you get a mic cable, shockmount, pop shield, a bag for it - and also a tutorial DVD, but you can safely ignore that... The kits are generally available at quite a competitive price, and Rode microphones have a good value-for-money reputation. You'll still need some sort of a stand, either desk or floor mounting - but they're easy to find.
For a sound device, you could consider something like the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB interface. This has all the useful bits you'll need - like the ability to plug a pair of headphones into the front for direct monitoring. Focusrite kit has a good reputation, and isn't overly expensive for what it is. This is a basic solution that would actually let you use two mics if you wanted, so there's a little room for expansion if you need. If you want to spend less money there are options like the Tascam US-122 - but I'd personally spend just a little more on the Focusrite - they have better mic preamps.
Yes you'll need a pair of headphones, but here the choice is rather up to you, although I'd recommend that you look at Beyer and Sennheiser for clean consistent results, although they aren't the only ones. You need closed-back ones though if you use them near the mic - something like the Beyer DT-250 is a good choice, because they have replacable leads, and the feed is into one side of the headphone only - and they're comfortable.
Since I don't know where you are located, I don't know what this is actually going to cost you, but it's good basic kit that should last you for a while, and produce decent results without spending a fortune. Yes it's possible to spend a heck of a lot of money on stuff like this, but the law of diminishing returns sets in quite early, and you can get remarkably good results these days without spending a lot at all. There are a few brands that are generally better avoided, like Behringer. Nothing wrong with Behringer electronics, but they economise on their hardware, and invariably things like sockets stop working, and knobs fall off. Oh, and they use cheap level controls etc, and these become noisy quite fast. You get what you pay for - it's cheap but it won't last long before you experience trouble.

  • What is the best video adapter to buy? Pinnacle or Canopus..

i was wondering on what will be the best of the two because i'm trying to buy one of those but i dont know what to buy. because will be doing a lot of video editing using a Hi8 video camera because i don't have any money to buy a DV camera.
what would be the best Digital video camera to buy that would work on my laptop? that could connect in using a firewire?

    Hi Bengt,
Thanks very much for the input. Your brief comparison rundown has given me a lot to ponder, I really appreciate it. Hope you don't mind me bouncing some of it off you?
I'm very new to iMovie (my background in commercial/graphic art and using Macs since '89 has helped me a lot). Previously I've put together a DVD from old family 8mm silent colour film, that I had digitised commercially, and a bunch of old slides and photos I scanned.
The family are very happy with the results, but I was hoping to save some money (and editing time) with the conversion of old BETA and VHS tapes of the remainder of our family footage by doing it myself.
You said of iMovie, The viewer is mere an approximation!
I didn't realise this but it posed some questions for me.
Firstly, do the 55 or 110 have any user controls over the quality of the signal that they send to the Mac?
If that not the case is there any difference between the two other than the ability, with the 110, to see your iMovie editing in real time on real TV?
Yes, I'm sure the 300 would be overkill for our needs, I don't see any future need for a converter once our 30-40 hours of unedited "happy snaps" are locked away again.
    Cheers,
    Ozi

  • Video to dvd what is best product to use/buy?

    Hi,
I have many hours of videos of my kids which I would like to convert to dvd.
What is the simplest products to buy for this and what exactly would I need to undertake this.Or would it be better to buy a more expensive product to achieve best results?
    Thanks

I was referring to Elgato, because they offer the best solutions in my opinion. At http://www.elgato.com/elgato/int/mainmenu/products/tuner.en.html you can select what you want to do. In your case it suggests the 250 plus or the hybrid. The first one says this in its description:
VHS Assistant to convert videotapes to DVDs
Looks like a hassle-free way to me and I've only heard good things about it so far.

  • What is the best soft ware to buy

    Hi Folks
    I really am a newbie.......
Which software should i consider buying to be able to produce ebooks and publications for my business. I would like to include pictures and and various other bits detail as well as text.
    Helppppp.
    Many thanks
    ROY

It really depends upon the content of the ebooks. Off hand I'm recommend the Create Suite Design Standard or Design Premium. The CS Suite forum might be the best place to continue this discussion. You can discuss the type of ebooks you have in mind together with your expertise in using the different Adobe software products. If your books will be more technical in nature the Technical Communication Suite might be better. Off hand, you are not familiar with desktop publishing software you might be best off looking for a professional to help you get started. You can have lots of software without the design and software skill set, you would be best off paying a design professional. Time is money.

  • Best/recommended place to buy a MBP?

Is there a recommended/good/best place to buy Macs? People are like "i'd never let BestBuy/geeksquad touch my mac"

    HollisterApple wrote:
People are always saying dont bring your mac to best buy/geeksquad.
There was a poster on here about a week or two ago who had purchased multiple iMacs from Best Buy...one had to be taken back for service almost immediately, then repeatedly, finally called Apple Support requesting a replacement machine.  Result: BB did virtually nothing in the way of support, did not fix things right, Apple did not recognize the service as valid against their approach to try three times at repair then give a new machine.
If you go there, buyer beware.
And no one is going to undersell Apple on Mac computers, anyway so why bother...go where you get the experts to help setup if you need that, answer questions, teach courses, provide certified service.

My experience with Lacie and Sony burners has always been positve and Toast is good to have around, it's always complimented iDVD well (in addition to having a host of other useful features).
    Note:
I'm not familiar with any of Toast 6 lite's features, but I do know you can burn DVD's with it. It adds another means of authoring a DVD outside of iDVD.

  • Which is the best Hard Drive to buy

    Hi all
I am in need of buying a second hard drive for my mac 8 core intel. Currently I only have one but need a second drive to house sofware such as EWQL, VSL Storm Drum and other VI's.
I know the apple store can be expensive sometimes so how much should I expect to pay for a 640GB or 1TB drive from another site/store. Also is it easy to install? I'm not technically minded and wonder if I order online will I be able to do it myself?
Lastly where is the best place to get the drive from?
    Many thanks all

  • Upgrading from PSE 10 best way download or buy disks

I am not computer savy for starters. I have PSE 10 and need to upgrade but don't want to lose my photos in my organizer or lose organization (happened to me in past when updated). Is best way to prevent this by downloading a new version or buying the actual disks at a store? Also if I buy a new computer in the coming months will I need physical disks to put it on my new system or is there a way to get program and contents back if downloaded from old computer?

You can purchase physical disks for installation, or download. You should consider that your new computer may not have a CD/DVD drive depending on what you purchase.

What is the best utility for iMac?

The best and most important utility is any software that makes full system backups. Time Machine comes with your Mac. A bootable clone is also a good idea. You can make one with Disk Utility's Restore button. SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner are also good ones that allow you to update an existing clone in a few minutes.

  • What's the best hard drive to buy (replacement)?

I have a 2008 17inch macbookpro 250G whose hard drive crashed and I need a new one.  There are so many choices (apple store, amazon, best buy).  I don't know what to get. I want a good brand/model that is reliable and not a junky one.  Any opinion?

I have one Hitachi, three Toshiba's and four Seagate's.  All are still spinning. Make sure your new drive is compatible with your MBP and I would avoid drives that have integral motion sensors since issues can arise with the SMS (Sudden Motion Sensor) that is in your MBP.  Caio
