Best Method for transferring projects back and fourth

Hello. I will soon be purchasing an iMac for home use and would like to get some advice on project transfer. I will be doing a lot of video editing back and fourth between the office and home. What is the best method for doing this? Where can i locate the files to make sure that I have everything and wont be missing anything when I bring it home, etc. Thanks for any advice!
Brandon

Use a (Firewire 800 or faster) external HD to keep your media, events and projects on.
You can then take the drive to work with you and back home. Use FCP X to transfer (or create) the event and projects on this drive and both macs will recognise it.
The drive must be formatted Mac OS Extended (journaled is not important for video drives).

  • Best Method for transfering iTunes library from Windows 7 to Mac OSX

I just bought a MacBook Air and am in the process of preparing my file transfer. The only data on my computer I really care about is my school/work files, (which are very easy to transfer), and my iTunes library. What is the best method for transfering music?
I was going to use an external drive and simply drag and drop everything. Last time I did this I needed a special file in order to keep my playlists, top rated, and playcount. Is there an easier and faster method now? I have about fifty gigabites of music so I think it might take longer over wifi.
I also have an iPhone and have already transfered all of the recent purchases. If I export my library, will all my iPhone backup data stay there as well?
If anybody has some insight or a link that outlines all of this that'd be great. Thanks in advance.

  • Best methods for this project

    Hi
I have this to create for a client.
    http://www.qwerty-design.co.uk/bensons/
If you click on the London area (bottom right if you're not from the UK) and click the map will zoom to reveal two markers. When these are rollover they reveal store names.
    Can I ask:
    1. I have 130 stores to show all over the country, what would be the best way of feeding the text into flash? would it be to use XML or just an external text file for each store?
    2. I am currently using a invisible button to create the click for the zoom, is this the way you guys would do this?
Can you recommend any other tips for creating this.
    Thanks
    Ricky55

Not that you asked for this advice, but that is what you get when you post for free help! Please take it in the sense of friendly critique that I mean it.
As the pins fade in I can see the "steel" through the red ball at top. Because you are using and alpha fade the red ball's alpha is partial and the artwork shows through. Not a biggie, but to me it looks unprofessional and clunky.
And I agree that XML will be the way to go if it is something that needs to be updated even a few times.

  • Best method for transferring data from one database to another?

There is an 8i database I have to deal with on a regular basis. Besides being completely outdated and unsupported, in my opinion the database has not been well-maintained--for a table with 25 million records, should ‘select count(*) from table;’ take 5 minutes to run? I don’t really know, but that seems long to me. Many complex queries (most including only tables with less than a million records) take a ridiculously long time to run, to the point that I can’t even run some of them.
I am not the DBA; I don't have the authority to fiddle with the database (nor would I feel comfortable doing that), and the powers that be will not put effort into improving functionality of this database due to an alleged plan to update/replace it within the next year. However, in the mean time, I still have to get data out of this database on a regular basis.
I have XE 10g installed on my local machine, and I have set up a database link in it to the 8i database. I have found that I can pull in basic data (simple queries) from the 8i database into tables in my XE database (e.g. create table tbl1 as select data from tbl1@8idb) and then query those tables to get the information I need much, much faster (including creation of the tables). While this option does not allow me to create queries/reports that other people can run, it makes work I’m doing only for myself much faster.
What I’m wondering is, what is the best way to bring the information I need over to my database? I usually don’t need entire tables, and I can probably identify a number of key tables (or parts of tables) I need. What I’ve been doing up until now is writing CREATE TABLE statements on the fly, but then I end up forgetting what all I’ve done, and each time I want up-to-date data, I have to drop the tables and re-create them. It seems to me that there should be an easier way to do this than to copy and paste from a text document into SQL*Plus.
Does anyone have any suggestions for me on how best to do this?

Sorry, I guess I posted this in the wrong forum. I re-posted in the database-general forum.

  • What is the best method for backing up photos in IPhoto?

I have over 10,000 photos in IPhoto and am looking for the best method for doing a backup (or an archive?).  I'm now using ICloud and it appears it's just photo streaming and does not have storage capability. External hard drive, copying to a DVD, other suggestions?

    Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate
    My Routine
My Library lives on my iMac. It’s Backed up to  two external hard disks every day. These disks are permanently attached to the iMac. These back ups run automatically. One is done by Time Machine, one is a bootable back up done by SuperDuper
It’s also backed up to a portable hard disk when ever new photos are added. This hard disk lives in my car. For security, this disk is password protected.
I have a second off-site back up at a relative’s house across town. That’s updated every 3 or 4 months.
My Photos are backed up online. There are many options: Flickr, Picasa, SmugMug etc. However, check the terms of your account carefully. While most sites have free uploading, you will often find that these uploads are limited in terms of the file size or the bandwidth you can use per month. For access that allows you to upload full size pics with no restrictions you may need to pay.
Every couple of months I test the back ups to make sure they are working correctly. It’s very easy to mis-configure a back up application, and the only way to protect against that is to do a trial restore.

  • Best Method For Importing Clips Between FCP Projects

What is the best method for importing clips between FCP 7.0.3 projects?  I am wondering whether or not pulling the clips from the Capture Scratch folder is the way to go or will using Import from the new FCP project create a new folder in Capture Scratch with the imported clips?  I have a new HD camcorder with different clips for different projects and Log and Transfer makes it so easy to bring them all in at once but now wondering how best to separate them into separate Capture Scratch folders for each project.

well, I simply either drag them in to the new/different project from the finder, or drag or copy and paste between open fcp projects.  Never had any problems working this way.  Just remember that if you delete a specific project scratch disk folder, you may be deleting media used in another project.

  • Best method for RT communication

    Hi all ,
I am using RT OS for my project , connected with the host PC , both the places I am creating the global variable of same names , like for DMM i create 2 global variable one in host and one is RT .I am passing the infor from host one after the other .I am processing the command in RT and the data is sent back to the host .
    for displaing and reporting .
can any one tell me is ther any other best method to communicate between host and RT communincation other than the global variable , or can one tell me that this is the best method .
    Regards,
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Network Streams are definately the easiest way to send data back forth between RT and Windows.  You need to create a read and write endpoint on each side, but then the network stream handles all of the connection and reconnection for you, so it makes your life a lot easier.

  • When bouncing- what's best method for smallest file size/highest quality?

I am in the process of embedding 3 mp3's into a PDF to submit as a portfolio. The PDF also has text, and two scores included, and with the 3 embedded mp3's it can't be more than 10mb.
So my question is: When bouncing a project out of Logic, what is the best method for getting the smallest file size, but retaining the best audio quality? And once it's out of Logic and it is an mp3 or other type of audio file, is there a best format for compressing it further, and still maintaining the relative quality?
I bounced out the three projects into wav's. Now I am using Switch for Mac to compress them down to smaller Mp3's. I basically need them to be about 3 mb each. Two of the recordings sound OK at that size, but they are just MIDI(one project is piano and string quartet, the other is just piano- all software instruments. The recording that combines MIDI and Audio and has more tracks (three audio tracks and 10 Midi/software instrument tracks)and sounds completely horrible if I get it under 5 mb as an mp3. The problem is that I need all three to equal around 9mb, but still sound good enough to submit as a portfolio for consideration into a Master's program.
If anyone can help I would really appreciate it. Please be detailed in your response, because I am new to logic and I really need the step by step.
    Thank you...

So my question is: When bouncing a project out of Logic, what is the best method for getting the smallest file size, but retaining the best audio quality?
The highest bitrate that falls within your limits. You'll have to calculate how big your MP3's can be, then choose the bitrate that keeps the size within your limit. The formula is simple: bitrate is the number of kilobits per second, so a 46 second stereo file at 96 kbps would be 96 x 46 = 4416 kbits / 8* = 552 kBytes or 0.552 MB. (*8 bits = 1 Byte)
So if you know the length of your tracks you can calculate what bitrate you need to keep it within 10 MB total.
I consider 128 kbps the lowest bearable bitrate for popsongs and other modern drumkit based music. Deterioration of sound quality is often directly related to the quality of the initial mix and the type of instruments used in it. Piano(-like) tones tend to sound watery pretty quickly at lower bitrates, as do crash and ride cymbals. But don't take my word for it, try it out.
And once it's out of Logic and it is an mp3 or other type of audio file, is there a best format for compressing it further, and still maintaining the relative quality?
You can only ZIP the whole thing after that, but that is just for transport. You'll have to unzip it again to use it. And no, you cannot compress an MP3 any further and still play it.
I bounced out the three projects into wav's. Now I am using Switch for Mac to compress them down to smaller Mp3's.
That is silly, you could have done that in Logic, which has one of the best MP3 encoders built in. And how good encoders are will especially come out at bitrates around or below 128, which you might be looking at.
I basically need them to be about 3 mb each.
So, one more scrap of info we need here: how long are those three pieces, exactly? I'll calculate the bitrate for you - but please bounce 'm directly out of Logic as MP3's. They will very probably sound better than your WAV-conversions made with Switch.

Length of the piece? And does the .Wav bounce you have sound OK?

  • Is an iPhone app the best choice for our project?

    Dear All,
We are developing a travel tour idea for different locations within the US.  Tour content can include video, audio, images and text, as well as maps and locations.  We want to make our tours "in-depth" so that people can spend good quality time traveling a short distance and exploring "in-depth" rather than travelling long distances and giving only casual interest to what they see.
I'm new to developing apps for the iPhone and am using Dreamweaver CS5.5 soon to be updated to CS6.
I'm wondering if an app for iPhone and other related media like Android is really the way to go because of the limited content and screen size available.  I can envision our tours being utilized in many other formats, including iPad, Interactive PDF, as travel e-books or through an interactive website.  Our goal is to sell our apps, not give our material away for free. PDF would be my preferred format, but I know that PDF is easily transferred for free among users and would probably not give us much profit.
Any thoughts out there on what the best format for our project might be, or should it include ALL of the above formats? App creation for the iPhone is a rather complicated process, so that's why I'm wondering if after all of the work that you have to put in to create an iPhone app, if that is ultimately my best choice.
I would appreciate any thoughts or advice, or any questions you might have.  I'm working on a Mac Pro with CS5.5 Master Collection soon to be updated to CS6

    hi,
It depends on your requirement. Base on my experience, VM or website all could meet your requirement. From your description, You could use azure website to host your php website (http://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/documentation/articles/web-sites-php-configure/).
And you could use website auto scale feature in the future. I suggest you could see their comparison (http://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/documentation/articles/choose-web-site-cloud-service-vm/
    Hope it helps.

  • Best Method of Transferring From Old Mac to New Mac

I've got a 27" iMac on order that's supposed to ship sometime in early January, and am wondering what is the best method of transferring everything from this Mac to the new one (once it arrives)?
As I understand it, there are essentially three ways of doing this:
    Migration Assistant
    Setup Assistant
    Time Machine
I've got two user accounts on this Mac, and will need to transfer everything for both accounts. I have about 350GB worth of files, data, and applications to transfer.
Is one of the above methods better than the others for accomplishing this? Are there any "gotchas" I should be aware of before moving everything over?
    Advice and assistance is welcomed.

The easiest method is to use Setup Assistant that automatically starts the first time you use a new Mac. It will offer you the opportunity to migrate all users or just those you select.
    Mike Osborn wrote:
... Are there any "gotchas" I should be aware of before moving everything over?
If you do not use Setup Assistant, you can always use Migration Assistant later. However, this can easily become confusing if you already created a user account on the new Mac. Most people won't have the patience to use Setup Assistant and understandably want to use their new Mac right away. If you elect to do that, don't create an account with the same name as one you wish to migrate. Instead, create a user account that you plan to erase after you migrate your existing accounts. The reason is that if you create a brand new account named, for example, "Mike Osborn", you will be unable to migrate to another account with that name.
Use a wired connection. Wireless can take an unacceptable amount of time (days).
Don't create a brand new Apple ID either. Have your existing Apple ID and password ready and use it, so you don't make the mistake of creating an Apple ID with no pedigree.
Register your new Mac (and all your other Apple equipment, if you have not yet done so) using this link:
      https://supportprofile.apple.com/
This provides for a convenient database of all your Apple equipment's serial numbers, service history, and warranty eligibility.

  • Best method for refreshing a component's data?

What's better when you want to refresh the content of an object? Should you just replace your JComponent with an entirely new one, or should you try to get access to the data and then remove the items and then re-add them.
In my example, I have a JTree and am not sure which would be the best method to use. Should I try to remove all the nodes, or sometimes I think it would be easier to just remove the tree component from my panel, create a new tree and re-populate it?
    Thanks for any advice.

I'm not quite sure what would be the best method for this.  My client is using a 4x3 screen and SD projector at a large meeting, and they want me to just create a DVD that is letterboxed.  I have one Premiere CS5 project that's 1920x1080, and another project that's 720x480 widescreen (1.2).  I created a new sequence in both projects that is 720x480, 4x3 (0.9), and what I do is just scale the timeline down so that it's letterboxed.  Is this the best method for achieving this?  Or would you do something else?  I don't like the idea of scaling my timeline down in Premiere.
    Hello.
As Jim so rightly points out above, you do not need to do anything.
Just use your normal 16:9 widescreen footage, and author as normal.
Your player will letterbox automatically when it is connected to a 4:3 screen in setup (just make sure "Pan & Scan" is not also there)

  • Best Method For Connection - JDev Team Help

    Hi,
We are using a couple of different methods for obtaining a connection and pooling. I'm wondering what is the best method, though...if there is a preferred approach?
One approach is getting the ApplicationModuleRef from the request. We then release the amref as true/true or true/false (pending of if we need to maintain state), but we definitely try to release true/false whenever possible.
The other approach is using createRootApplicationModule. We then either release it back to the pool false or destroy it immediately w/ true.
Is there a preferred approach between the two? We are constantly struggling with inactive sessions that are not getting cleaned up when they reach our timeout limit which is causing severe memory issues with our application. Is one of our methods for obtaining the connection and releasing perhaps causing our pooling issues?
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!
    Andy Hamilton - TUSC

That is exactly the problem and with 100+ users on the system at one time our connection count gets large quite rapidly. The issue only occurs though with sessions released true/true...they are never reused, just new connections piled on top.
We are actually turning connection pooling on in hopes of it resolving our connection issues. Any idea though why if you release an amref true/true and then attempt to do a session.invalidate you would get this error:
