BEST METHOD OF DIGITIZING FROM DV DECK TO NEW MAC MINI

Hi and thanks for the help. I've got a brand new mac mini on the way and I've been using a JVC SRDVM600 player/recorder as my mini DV source machine to digitize to my old mini through its 4 pin IEEE 1394 firewire port.  Now the new mini has firewire 800, Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 ports.  For digitizing/capturing from the JVC is there any quality difference between the 3 ports since the source is the 4 pin DV firewire and I'll need adaptors to get the media into the mini no matter which port I use? This will be for editing with fcpx.

Exactly, the speed will be the same no matter what cables you use. The Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter was created for people who have Firewire devices that need to connect to a newer computer with Thunderbolt and no Firewire ports. Speed is always based on the slowest connection, even though Thunderbolt is rated at 10 Mbs, the fastest it can go is .8 Mbs dictated by the Firewire connection from the deck.
I have a MacBook Pro mid-2011 that has both Thunderbolt and Firewire 800 ports, so luckily I don't need the Thunderbolt adapter. I also have three external Firewire 800 drives that I always plug into the Firewire port. But, recently I bought a Seagate GoFlex Thunderbolt adapter that will take any eSata drive. I removed my external drives from their Firewire enclosures so that I could plug them into the GoFlex adapter to get the Thunderbolt speed, or at least as fast as the eSata would allow, 6 Mbs.

A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
The Knowledgebase article Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated refers to methods of dealing with migrating from PowerPC chips to Intel with the Migration Assistant safely. The authors of this tip have not had a chance to verify this works in all instances, or that it avoids the 10.6.1 and earlier Guest Account bug that caused account information to get deleted upon use of the Migration/Setup Assistant. However, a well backed up source that includes at least two backups of all the data that are not connected to your machine will help you avoid potential issues, should they arise. In event it does not work, follow the steps below.
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate.  Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications Screensavers written for the PowerPC System Preference add-ons All Unsanity Haxies Browser and other plug-ins Contextual Menu Items Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5 Kernel extensions Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro , SuperDuper , and Drive Genius  work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard.  The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.  Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs.  The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode.  It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
    2. Backup your data.  This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    4. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
    5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.

  • I'm getting no audio from QTX on my new Mac Mini's digital o/p.

VLC is fine (once I'd selected the correct audio o/p). QTX has no 'preferences' - so what can I do? Seems a shame not to use QT.

According to the specs of your display, the kdl40v5100 does not allow you to make a digital audio connection between your mini and the TV, and therefore you can not use the TOSLINK cable you purchased to do this..
However, you can make an analog connection. At the back of your TV, you will notice that one of your HDMI inputs has 2 plugs next to it- a red one and a white one.
Here is a picture of the back of your set. Look at number 5. This is where you will make the connection.
    http://www.retrevo.com/r/23482dj787/9/LocatingInputs+and+Outputs#q=SonyKDL-40V5100
This is where you will connect the mini audio, by using a cable that looks like this...

(and of course, if the HDMI for the mini is not plugged into the neighboring HDMI port you will have to switch things around to do so.

  • Best method of importing from external drive?

    Hello:
You pretty much have it right. Here's what I do to move applications between APEX installations.
    1) Export/Import Workspaces
    2) Export/Import Applications for each workspace. (I retain the source application id in the target)
    3) Export/Import Workspace Images/Files etc
    4) Use Oracle exp/imp , Oracle DataPump or plain old sqlplus scripts to move database objects from source to target.

  • Transfer digital photos from Olympus Stylus Tough to mac mini desktop - viewing

How to view digital photos transferred from Olympus Stylus Tough to Mac Mini after duplicated to desktop?  Unable to locate.

Olympus website FAQ:  I am aMac user. What software can I use to view my images and movies on my computer?
The [ib] software bundled with this camera is not compatible with Macintosh operating systems. Mac users who wish to transfer their images and movies to a Mac for viewing, editing and sharing have two options:
Connect the camera to the computer using the camera's bundled USB cable, and then manually transfer your files to the computer using standard copy/paste or drag and drop techniques. Once the files are on your computer, you can use any third-party application of your choice to view, edit and share them. After transferring data there is no efficient way to copy to a file.  The folder provides a "duplicate" option and then it "copies" items to "desktop" by default.
    ===============
After I transfer the data the unnamed folder gives me the option to "duplicate".  When I do this the data, by default, "copies" to the desktop.
I am unable to retrieve and locate the actual digital photos and videos, however.  I have tried transferring data before and was able to locate it in the folder,
but this time I am not locating it.
My O.S. would not allow me to install the Olympus software needed.

If the Mac use Lion (10.7) you can use Airdrop for that.

If you still have the crashed Win computer, you may be able to recover your music and movies from the hard drive. If you have a friend with a hard drive USB connection kit and a PC, they should be able to help.  Otherwise, check locally for computer services that might do that for you (I think Best Buy Geek Squad may be able to help). If the drive itself is in good shape, it shouldn't be too expensive.

It sounds unlikely of course. But from your question it's hard to tell what might have filled your HDD. Are you constantly on file sharing or has filled the drive with movies?
Best way to tell is to start checking what folders occupy space. "Get Info" for the HDD and its subfolders is a way to start checking where the data in question resides.
And as BGreg say, call Apple support is also a good way to begin with.

  • How to transfer Apps from PB G4 OS 10.4.11 to New Mac mini 1.83 Ghz Leopard

    Hi all,
I'm sorry if this question has previously been posted. I tried searching the forums but was unsuccessful. I just purchased a new Mac mini 1.83 Ghz with Leopard.
*How can I transfer my files and applications from my powerbook G4 to the new mac mini.*
I'd like to transfer all my files and folders except for Tiger OS, and then reformat my PB G4 and sell it.
In the past I used CCC Carbon Copy Cloner, however I'm assuming that won't work in this situation.
Any help would be most appreciated. Thank you.

If your new mini is an Intel based system, then for the most part you really don't want to transfer your applications from the G4 PB to it, because at least some of your applications are going to be PPC software which is not native on the Intel system and therefore will run very slowly. Ideally, you would reinstall your software from disk or download, ensuring that were possible you replace non-native versions with fully Intel native (often described as 'Universal').
However, to answer your question, put the G4 PB into firewire target disk mode if it is capable of it (hold the T key down while booting it - a firewire symbol will appear on-screen if it can do this). Then connect it to the mini with a standard 6-pin to 6-pin firewire cable. Then on the mini, run the Migration Assistant (in Applications>Utilities) and follow the prompts. The system will then be able to see the PB as an external drive and allow you to migrate files, applications and settings.
Beware though that there can be issues because not only are you migrating from a G4 system to an Intel one, but also from Tiger to Leopard, meaning that you might find some software doesn't run correctly, or settings may cause instabilities.
Typically the best bet is to migrate your files using the migration assistant, but manually install software and set all the various configurations.
You're certainly right that you can't use CCC in this situation!!

  • Burn from iMovie on new Mac Mini

I just purchased a new Mac Mini and I created a project from iMovie '11, but iDVD is no longer on them, so what is the best way to burn an iMovie project to DVD?

If you have access to a different mac with optical drive, transfer the file to it and burn it there. Or use target disk mode between the two systems via FireWire ( as opposed to wifi or ethernet networking to that machine ... which is too slow and unreliable to transfer that much data and will give you coasters)
If you only have one mac, the new mac mini, your best and easiest bet is an external USB dvd burner. Apple sells one.
There are many reports in this forum and others of people who have bought a USB dvd burner drive from another manufacturer for as little as $30 and used that successfully.
