Best method of File transfer to new iMac

I currently have a 2007 iMac aluminum (Intel) with a 750 GB HDD and an unconnected 750 GB desktop HDD that I do a complete back-up to every week. I do not use TM. My current iMac is going to be passed down to my son when I get a new one, but I want it to go to him with NONE of my personal information, so I plan on re-formatting the HDD (on the old iMac) before I give it to him. What is the best strategy for getting all my current settings, apps, e-mails, calendars, etc., etc., onto my new one?
Thanks,
Rich

you should transfer your data before you re-format your HD.

  • G4 PCI (with faulty firewire) file transfer to new iMac

I just purchased a new 20" iMac and anxiously awaited the time when I would be transferring all of my files from my old G4 to the iMac. Turns out that the G4 firewire ports apparently are not working. I even bought a PCI/firewire card but it didn't work either, so it must be a problem on the motherboard. Is there another way to do an easy transfer of the files? And is there a way to verify the G4 firewire problem?
    Thanks.

Use an "External Harddrive" to move your files.
Move your G-4 Harddrive to an External Harddrive Enclosure, just for anexample here is one from CompUSA.

    Network them using "Ethernet"

Other ways would be CD's/DVD's or you can e-mail it to yourself (new mac)

Then it sounds like the FW800 to 400 adapter just gets in the way. You don't have FW800 case? on my MDD G4 I added and used FW800 controller and cases from OWC and Sonnet.

  • Firewire Cable Needed For File transfer Between Old iMac & New iMac.

I have an iMac G4 (Flat Panel) - just got the the iMac 21.5! Need to transfer files between old & new iMac.
Is the 6 pin to 6 pin the correct cable I'm going to need to get my files transfered ???

No. The new iMacs have FireWire 800, which is 9-pin. Older Macs have FireWire 400, which is 6-pin. You need something like this.

  • How do I get backed up Aperture files into my new iMac correctly?

Here's the deal.  My 4 year old iMac HD failed.  My the Time Machine backup software in the Time Capsule was somehow corrupted so I could't just restore or Migrate the files to my new iMac.  I was able to retrieve the actual "Pictures" folder from my TC.  Temporarily I have placed them in a folder on my new iMac's desk top.  I reloaded Aperture 3 and am now wanting to be able to populate Aperture as it was before with my photos with photos that have been post processed showing all of those changes...etc.  Is it as simple as moving all of these files to the new iMac's "Pictures" folder in my User?  I don't want to mess this up!
    Thanks for any help!
    Greg

    Hello Greg,
that looks like you imported some of your masters as referenced. You best put those folders in exactly the similar position inside the Pictures folder as you originally had them on your old drive.
Then use Aperture to consolidate them into your new library.
First you need to reconnect them to the versions:
That is best done by creating a smart album that contains all images that need reconnecting: Define a smart album with the rule:  File status is offline (or missing), depending on what you see.
Then select all images in that album and select "File -> Locate Referenced Files" from the menu.
You now should see a dialogue that shows the images that need reconnecting in the upper part of the window, and a file chooser in the lower part.
In the File chooser select the coorect master files corresponding to the missing files in the upper part of the window.
If you are lucky, the reconnect all button will become active and you can reconnect your masters.

You should be able to change the permissions on the files.. this is yet another bungle by Mavericks I suspect.

How can I open my .cwk files on my new iMac OS 10.8?

    Alas, you can't.
You can open nearly all of them. Pages will open AppleWorks 6 Word Processing documents but not AppleWorks 5 ones.
Word Processing documents can be opened directly only in Pages.
Draw Documents can be opened directly only in EazyDraw (the more expensive version from their website, not the cheaper one from the Mac App Store, and you will need v4.0 'Retro' not the most recent version) or Intaglio (though this appears not to be able to handle very complex drawings). (It's possible to copy Draw documents into a Word Processing document in order to open them in Pages, but you need AppleWorks to do this in the first place.)
Spreadsheets can be opened directly only in Numbers.
Presentations can be opened directly only in Keynote.
Nothing will open AppleWorks databases or Paint documents: the only way to access them is to open them in AppleWorks and export.
This seven-page article examines migrating from AppleWorks in some detail:

How do I translate Word Perfect old files for my new iMac?  They are transferred from a 13-year-old Dell.  My McLink did not work.
    Thanks.

The current version of the free LibreOffice continues to support Word Perfect documents. OpenOffice had to drop this support due to licensing issues. LO installs in two places: /Applications and your local Library/Application Support directory. Simple to install. Simple to remove. Good PDF documentation from their site. It is a capable MS Office replacement.
I just opened a wpd legal deposition in LO and it looked fine.

  • Do I need a firewire cable to transfer files to my new iMac?

Hi, I have a new iMac coming soon and I want to know the best way to transfer my files, settings etc from my iBook G4 to the new comp. We have wireless at home- can I set up some kind of network? Or do I need to buy a firewire cable and use Migration Assistant? If so, which cable? Thank you

Hmm. I hadn't heard about the problems people have been having. Anyway, yeah, it's probably better to try Migration Assistant with the FireWire cable. From what I've heard (I haven't had to USE Migration Assistant yet; first-time Mac user, and haven't needed a new one yet), Migration Assistant does a good job getting everything switched over, and it's only method is FireWire. So, yeah. LOL. I think that's your best bet.
I'm so jealous. I have a PowerBook G4 (the model RIGHT before the last model; I should have waited a few weeks!), and now I want at least a MacBook. The cheapest MacBook is now BETTER, in many ways, than my PowerBook, besides the obvious things like screen size. AND it's about half the price I got my PowerBook for. This is CRAZY! Haha.

    IS THE SITUATION HOPELESS
I used Target mode to transfer files to a new i7  iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 from an older Dual core Intel machine (EMC 2105) also on 10.6.8. but originally Tiger 10.4. The operation was successful and I ejected the disk icon from the new machine and powered down the old machine. When this was restarted the next day there was a grey screen with flashing Mac symbol alternating with a 'no entry' sign and occasionally a question mark.Keyboard and mouse were unusable so k inserted the original instal disc (No.1 for 10.4. with installer 1.0.4) which came with the machine in 2006 in an attempt to boot from this. The ensuing window said this was not possible and now it cannot be ejected.I have tried everything ! It offers Disk Utility and other options like Terminal but that doesn't work either.I 'repaired disk' and that was pronounced o.k. None of the various keystrokes at start up will work, and the computer will only offer the installer disc continually. The only option would seem to be is to erase the hard drive completely from the disc in the machine.I don't want to do this as there is still material which I need to recover. I think the drive has in some way been corrupted by using it in target mode, and I don't know if there are any other options to try.
Please tell me how to get this disc to eject !

Have you seen this type of problem before? I think it could be a serious issue for anyone in a similar position.
No; but then, I've not had occasion to use TDM. I've been using firerwire drives for over 10 years, both FW400 and FW800, with no issues except a bit of instability using a B&W G3 machine.
TDM should be safe. Using cautious, manual copying of files from the Target machine to the Host machine should not result in unexpected loss of files or damage to the Target drive's directories. It should behave exactly the same as if it were an external (to the Host) firewire drive.
    •  I don't suppose there is anything I can do to 'put back' lost items from a separate Time Machine drive which has an up to date backup on it.
There is probably a way to do that - seems to me that's one of the reasons for a Time Machine volume.
On the other hand, if the Time Machine volume is rigidly linked to the now-absent OS on the original drive, there may be no way to effectively access the files in the TM archive.
I know that using a cloned drive would work well in this instance.
I have no experience with Time Machine, so perhaps someone who has will chime in with suggestions.
With the machine in TDM with the other machine, have you tried running Disk Utility to see if you can effect repairs to the drive?

  • Can't transfer files to my New iMac!

Just got by brand spanking new iMac Intel 20" today. I have a iMac G4 flat panel. I started up the new mac, connect it to my old machine through a firewire cable, restarted the old machine into firewire mode (holding down T) and began the process. About halfway through and both machines froze up. I rebooted each machine and tried again.... two more times. Same result.
Please help! Don't wanna have to drag two machines to the Apple Store!

When you do this kind of migration it is different than the past. In the past it was PPC OS X to PPC OS X. But this transfer is PPC OS X to Universal OS X.
I think folks have been more successful with limited transfers and maybe in smaller batches. I suggest doing a migration of just your use account first; personal data and settings. Then after you know that the new user account is up and running go to Apps/Utilities (on the new computer) and open the Migration Assistant again and transfer your photo collection. After you know that the photos are transfered successfully do it again and transfer your music collection, then your video collection, etc.
I would not transfer program software at all. I would do fresh installs of each program from the software CD/DVD and make sure that I know it has installed successfully and that it runs with no conflicts, one program at a time. There are some known conflicts. Do not install Version Cue from Adobe CS2. If you install Adobe Acrobat, immediately download and install the recently issued update from Adobe. Don't transfer any Apple apps. You shouldn't need to because everything from the PPC OS X Tiger 10.4 has been written and installed on the new Mac in Universal OS X Tiger 10.4.
It may take a little longer, but so does all this grief and trouble shooting when we try to go too fast with too much and it fails.

  • Best transition from iBook G4 to new iMac

I would like to move FireFox from my iBook G4 to my new iMac, w/all bookmarks etc. Apple's Migration Assistant did not do it for me.
Please advise best step by step process.
    Thank you

But, one question is, what are file permission issues?
Each file or folder in Mac OS X has a specific owner and permissions set to it. Accounts other than the owner may not have read and write access to that folder. Running Batchmod sets the permissions on a group of items at once so your account has the proper access. If you drag the library over manually, doing this will take care of permission issues. Using the Migration Assistant will create a different Mac OS X user account and use that for the photos; it's probably easier to either use an external drive or connect the two machines with a FireWire or network connection, start up the old computer with the T key held down(FireWire) or log into it(network) and drag the folder over manually.
Also, is the new "Package" in iPhoto '08 important?
The package was added to reduce the chance that people will damage the iPhoto library by modifying it in the Finder.
One more thing (and I'm sorry to be so clueless on this), what will I need for the Migration Assistant? Just a regular ethernet cable? USB?
The Migration Assistant requires a FireWire cable.
