Best Method Of Import For Future Preservation

I would like to import all my home movies through iMovie to an external hard drive, but am wondering if that is the best method to ensure that I will always be able to use/access them in the years to come. A couple of questions:
**Does iMovie still preserve and save to the external drive the original format the movie was recorded in? Does it switch it to something that only iMovie can recognize and find?
**What if iMovie quits being made in 10 years or if I switch to a different editing program down the road? Will I still be able to use/access my movies?
**Would it be better to skip going through iMovie and just copy the movies/files directly to the external drive?
Thank you for any info you can give me.

in iMHD≤6: yes, even after editing, the unaltered original video is kept untouched; in iM08 answer is more complicated: the Events store the original data, but it is unable to export without altering it.. And: mpeg2 and AVCHD files get automatically converted.. but into a lossless codec ..
Does it switch it to something that only iMovie can recognize and find?
the .mov digged deep into the file structure of iM (in iMHD6: in the project packages; in iM08: in the Events Folder) are playable without iM..

very hard to tell; my experience: cross-app/cross-platform, accessability is .. small. compare with 'opening iMHD6 project with iM08' , or 'transfer iM08 to FCE' .... and those are actual apps from one manufacturer..
.. Would it be better to skip going through iMovie and just copy the movies/files directly to the external drive?
that's why I'm in the process of decision making come back to tape (HDV) - I'm storing about an terabyte of my son's life on video in a simple shoebox.. no copying, backup, no transfer.. as long as I get some service which is able to playback that worlwide standard, I can watch and use those videos..
I often tell that situation: me being on Cuba, running out of 'storage space' ... 7$ and got a new tape, 60min.. imagine that with a fancy HDDcorder.. you need additionally in your travel luggage your Mac, power brick, prob. an ext. harddrive, just for 'emtpying' your camcorder .. honestly: not on MY vacations/my hotel rooms, tents.. ..
and don't tell me '17h recording time' .. IF HiDef camcorder, than FullHD.. which is actually a max. of 3h per device.. and I do record more than 3h on a 2 weeks journey..

  • What is the best method to import my iPhoto library from my macbook to my new iMac [27"]?

What is the best method to import my iPhoto library from my macbook to my new iMac [27"]?

You can copy your iPhoto Library to an external hard disk, USB flash drive, or other media (depending on the size of your iPhoto library). Then, you'd copy the iPhoto Library from that media to the same location on your iMac.
Using the Finder, navigate to your Home folder (or click on Go from the menu bar and click on Home). Open the Pictures folder, select your iPhoto Library and then from the menu bar choose "Edit" and then "Copy". Then navigate to your external disk, click on "Edit", and then click on "Paste".
Then, insert your media on the iMac, and copy the iPhoto Library from your external media to the same location on your iMac (the Pictures folder located under your Home folder).
Hope that helps, have a great day.

  • Best method of 'Importing" a HD movie?

There seem to be various suggestions as to the best way of transferring AVCHD video files from camera to PE9
I connect my Sony camera via USB2 to the computer and it looks exactly like another hard drive in Windows Explorer.
The camera files all have MTS extensions. They are 1920x1080i AVCHD files according to Sony and even play in WMA direct from the camera.
I then simply copy them to a hard drive folder using Window Explorer. I dont use any special import program.
To use them in PE9, I "Get Media from files" in the Hard Disk in the usual way.
I notice when getting them, PE9 does a little Comforming routine for a few seconds on each file clip. Is it changing them in any way? No red lines show.
They all preview and edit OK
Is this the best way and have I really imported best quality AVCHD files or are they now something else?
When I used the Sony downloading program they ended up m2ts extensions instead of mts but they look the same to me.

When AV files are Imported into PrE, they are Conformed, creating CFA files (for Audio) for editing, PEK files for Waveform Display, and with MPEG files, they are also Indexed. This process is necessary, and is explained in this ARTICLE. One should let the Conforming complete 100%, before using those files, or there can be truncation with the CFA and PEK files, resulting in only partial Audio. On weaker systems, if one does anything, during this process, it can crash the system, or PrE. I just Import, and sit back with a cup of coffee, until everything is complete. In most cases, this takes but just a moment.
    Good luck,

  • I have a huge amount of songs on my Mac in files that aren't in iTunes.  what is the best method to import them all into iTunes easily?

When I got my 1st MacBook Pro I was coming to the Mac world from a PC.  When importing all the files from my PC to Mac the files got scattered bad, and now I am faced with the dubious task of getting my music library all into iTunes so I can organize and then burn them or sync to our iPads and iPhones.  Can anybody lend a hanf on how to complete this enormous task efficiently?  All assistance is very much appreciated.

Drag and drop the files form the Finder into iTunes. Another way is to select 'Add to Library' from the iTunes file menu - then follow the dialog to locate the files you want to add.
Before doing that - go to iTunes prefs>Advanced - enable the copy and keep options. iTunes will do all the heavy work for you.
Once the tunes are added to the iTunes Library then you can delete the files from their original location.

  • What is the best method to query for older GPIB equipment with ID? and newer with *IDN?

    Good day,
I am writing a test executive where it needs to scan the bus for support of older (HP/Agilent 856x series) and newer (Agilent 440x and 444x series) spectrum analyzers. *NOTE* I originally posted this question in my NI Community blog. I apologize for redundancy but someone recommended I re-post here.
The first frame looks for the newer analyzers with *IDN? then if that fails sets the boolean in the error cluster to TRUE. The next frame then uses the error cluster's boolean to decide whether an older HP analzer is connected instead using ID? query. Disclaimer: the second frame is a clone of the ID query of the 856x Initialize VI. I just want to use what already worked - no reinventing the same wheel?
But, lo and behold, it doesn't work as expected. If I have the frames in this order and connect a HP8563E the GPIB time's out error. This code works with the newer 4407 or 4440 since the *IDN? query passes and the second frame is not executed.
Now, when I move the second frame to become the first frame and run it with HP8563E the query works but will have a GPIB timeout if I have the 4407 or 4440 connected.
Long story short, how do I support both older GPIB ID? and newer IDN? in my code?
I have attached the query VI created with LV 2012.
    Many thanks!

  • What is the best method of backing up my digital files (catalog) in the Photoshop Elements Organizer

What is the best method or service for backing up my digital files (catalog) in the Organizer from Photoshop Elements 12. Since there no longer is  the automatic  Elements sync available I do not know what to choose. I have tried to back this up using my external drive, but I cannot find the digital images per se. I see the entire program but not the catalog of pictures. Also, I have a windows operating system and Adobe  Revel offers no edit capabilities with this OS.

I'm in a similar situation including movies I've purchased from iTunes...
    Here's my setup:
I have all my iTunes data (music, movies, etc.) as well as about 10 GB of photos stored on a nework storage device that uses RAID-5 with SATA disks. This is basically a little toaster-sized NAS machine with four hard drives in it (www.infrant.com). If one of these drives dies, I get alerted and can insert a new one without missing a beat since the data is stored redundantly across all drives. I can also just yank out any one of the four drives while the thing is running and my data is still safe (I tried this after I bought it as a test).
That's how I prevent problems with a single disk... Redundancy
    Now onto "backups"...
Nightly, my little RAID toaster automatically backs itself up to an attached 250GB USB drive. However, these backups are only of my critical data... documents, photos and home movies... I don't bother backing up my "Hollywood" movies since I can live without them in a disaster.
... I actually don't permanently store anything I care about on a laptop or a desktop. It all goes on the NAS box (Network Sttached Storage) and then my other computers use it as a network drive. It's attached via Gigbait to my main computer and via wireless to most everything else.
My achilles heel is that I don't store anything outside of my house yet. If I was smart, I'd alternate two USB drives attached to my NAS box and always keep one of them somewhere else (Safe Deposit Box?).
...and that's just one way to do it.

  • Best Method For Importing Clips Between FCP Projects

What is the best method for importing clips between FCP 7.0.3 projects?  I am wondering whether or not pulling the clips from the Capture Scratch folder is the way to go or will using Import from the new FCP project create a new folder in Capture Scratch with the imported clips?  I have a new HD camcorder with different clips for different projects and Log and Transfer makes it so easy to bring them all in at once but now wondering how best to separate them into separate Capture Scratch folders for each project.

well, I simply either drag them in to the new/different project from the finder, or drag or copy and paste between open fcp projects.  Never had any problems working this way.  Just remember that if you delete a specific project scratch disk folder, you may be deleting media used in another project.

    Hi:
Ussually I have to rebuild in AI the company logo (I use to work for industries) to include in FCP edit.
    - If you have CS2, open Photoshop and create a new file using the right preset (i.e. DV PAL) using transparent background. That creates a PSD empty file with all attributes you need (pixels dimensions and aspect ratio) to use later in FCP.
    - Select your work (i.e. the final logo) in the AI canvas and copy it.
    - Paste it in the empty PSD file as "vextor information" (I don't remember right now the exact words!). That way you can resize it in the PSD file without loosing quality.
    - The better ir deciding the size NOW in Photoshop, or create sveral version in different sizes. Yuo'll get better quality id you make the resizings in Photoshop rather that doing a scale in FCP timeline.
    - Once your logo is in the right dimension into the PSD file, save a copy and flatten all layers keeping the transparent background. If you don't need the layers during editing in FCP, you better have all layers flattened.
    - Import that file in FCP.
That's my workflow, but probably you'll find different flavors here!

  • Best format for HD imovie export & 'archiving' source video for future

I’m sort of new to this but your help would be appreciated. I want to make sure I don’t mess up and delete any ‘precious’ moments.
I recently purchased a Canon HF100 Camcorder and have been recording various short movies and wanted to ‘plan’ for the future
    1. I import the movies directly into imovie 08 without any issues (at the highest quality). I then drag the “MTS” files from my camcorder to a folder on my desktop (still compressed) and plan to save them for ‘future’ use (i.e., burn them to DVD or maybe move to an external hard drive) – I want to make sure I don’t lose any of the video ‘quality’
 Will I be able to easily ‘load’ these MTS files into imovie or other video software?
    2. I currently do not have a HD DVD player or Blu Ray Player – but plan to get one in the near future. I want to make sure that when I export movies from imovie 08 I export the movie with the best HD quality.
 I’ve exported the movie using the best mac settings (.MOV) files, and they look ok on the computer, but the resolution was lower than the native resolution from the camcorder. I’ve also messed around with some of the various settings in the Quicktime, but none really looked that good with playback on the mac and there were a lot of different options I was not familiar with (maybe because I don’t have the Quicktimepro?) – anyway can anyone recommend some ‘univeral’ HD settings that I should use?
    3. Once I save a movie to quicktime (or whatever the best recommended setting from #2 above), I’m assuming I can re-open or import it back into imovie and re-edit – correct?

    HI there,
You need to preserve the file structure to a certain extent. Inside the Canon directory is a folder named "private" Inside that is one named "AVCHD". that's the one that needs to be saved, preserving directory structure within. It's best to save it as a disk image. Once opened, that disk image is seen as the camera by FCE or iMovie 08. Here's a thread about this on MacRumours (I'm gpeden):
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=514751
I'm new to this too, but I have that much figured out so far:) Of course, one needs an intel Mac for this.
I'm preserving the raw files for the future in the disk images (and burning the 8 gig card's disk images to dual layer DVD - data only, for the ones I really want to backup), which assures me that any future upgrades to hardware or codecs will be able to possibly improve over what's available today.

  • What is the best method for moving iTune Libraries from Old to New Computer

    Hello,
Thanks in advance for any assistance you may offer.
My Sony Vaio Desktop recently died and untimely death, so I just purchased an HP Notebook. I was trying to wait out the release of the possible update of the Macbook line. However the old computer didn't agree. This HP will tie me over till a new release.
I've been doing weekly backups for over 3 years with a backup drive from Western Digital. At this point I just want to transfer my music in iTunes and applications from the App store that are loaded on to my iPod Touch into the new computer and then reauthorize and sync.
My question is what's the best method. Oh another problem I'm having includes the latest iPhone & iPod Touch software problem of 3rd party apps not working along with the vanishing of my music on the Touch.
Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Open up a fresh copy of iTunes. Point iTunes in the direction of your Western Digital Harddrive. Import Folders.
    1. New Copy
    2. Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> General -> Change -> <the address of the iTunes library on WD>
    3. File -> Add Folder to Library -> <Select iTunes folder on WD>
Always keep a backup of your iTunes Library file and the iTunes XML Document. If you have those, then it might be just as simple as copying those to your iTunes file folder. If you are not sure where they are, then do a search for iTunes.xml.

  • Best way to Import Excel to InDesign for my Catalogue

    Hey Everyone,
I've combed and combed through the forums here and elsewhere, and haven't found the best solution to my particular challenge.
I'm revamping a furniture product catalogue (170 pages) and the layout is fairly simple.
    My question:
I'm trying to figure out the best way to get the source data into the template, and god willing, not have to type all of the text in manually. I've ticked my preferences to "Paste without formatting", and plan to do quite a bit of cleaning up (e.g. =Proper and or concatenate) with the spreadsheet. I've experimented with copying and pasting (without formatting), and in the examples below, I ended up just manually typing it in. I'm also puzzled as to how to import the "additional information" which is listed underneath the table.
    Anyone have any recommendations?
I have a table set up within InDesign, with table/cell styles defined (hopefully) correctly.
I added screen caps of the catalogue below for reference The bottom portion will not always be the same number of rows, e.g. if the style doesn't offer a Cocktail ottoman):
And the 2 piece per page setup:
    Source Data
The source of the data is in the excel spreadsheet that looks like the above, EXCEPT the additional details info, which is just listed in the last column (AE) below:
Thanks so much to everyone on here!
    Alex

How much does the particular plugin run? It's a possibility, but you are correct, I would rather not
Haven't the foggiest; I work at a nonprofit, my upper management would never shell out for a catalog plugin. I do know that they exist, though. EasyCatalog has a 30-day trial, so if you like it you may want to buy it for future projects. (I don't know if it's crippled, so read carefully...)
I will read up on the XML, but ya, this project is a bit breakeck for the deadline, so, unless anyone else has any recommendations, I'd probably just do it manually. (shudder)
Yeah, if you're already operating under a deadline, then it may be faster to do it John-Henry-style than it would be to learn how to use a new tool to do it easier the next time.
