Best methods for bringing media to a different system

I'm usually an Avid guy, and I am doing a FCP project that involved media that was digitized on a different system. I started a new project and imported the folder with the media and it came in just fine, but I now get an "Out of Memory" error after playing just a few clips. I've got a dual 2g G5 w/3 gigs of ram, so I guess I don't understand, any help would be appreciated.

Jeff
glad helped you get over the first issue. This next isnt quite so simple. yes, I understand that according to many who've tried it, 4.5 wont open an FCP 5 project sadly. But, if you haven't done too much work on the project in 5 other than perhaps digitise the clips, why dont you try making a new project in 4.5 and simply import or drag the clips into your 4.5 project browser, they should play surely as they're just QT files. You should not have to re -log and capture. FYI in case there's a misunderstanding ...if say you have twenty clips on one drive, in this case an external, and you want to bring them into a porject which may be on another drive, and you drag or import as above to get them into the project, this only happens in the virtual sense. It doesnt physically affect the hard drive in a mjaor way - the clips do not get transferred, just previews I suppose one could call them. I'm sure many readers would like to know if you can get the clips into a 4.5 project. Pls let us know!

  • How do I prepare my iMac for sale? And best practice for transferring media to a new system.

This is my first time posting in a forum, so I will apologize in advance if I'm doing something wrong. I've tried to search for a very clear answer to my questions in the existing discussions, but have not had much luck.
I ordered a Macbook Pro today and would like to sell my current iMac to supplement some of the cost. I purchased my iMac in March of 2011 with OS X Snow Leopard preinstalled. I've since updated to Mountain Lion. When my computer came in it did not have OS DVDs, so I am not sure exactly how to take it back to factory default and remove ALL of my information safely in order to prepare it for sale. I'm afraid to tell it to format if I am going to need a boot disc/drive to reinstall the OS. I've been trying to research all day and have learned that I will not be able to sell it with the current OS, only the one that came with the computer at the time of purchase (to the best of my understanding).
Secondary to all of this, I have a question about backing up info and porting it to my new system. I have run the Time Machine backup to my external hard drive. However, I DO NOT want to port it to my new MBP as an image of my past machine. I did that when I got my iMac from my old MBP and my iMac thinks it is a MBP (MBP EFI/SMC Firmware Update Icons in my system utilities folder as well as identified as a Macbook Pro on my network). I've never been able to get all of these things to go away and I feel like it's chewing up hard drive space for no purpose whatsoever. I also worry that it could create system issues that I'm just not savy enough to catch before they are beyond control. That being said, I'd like to begin fresh with my new MBP. What is the best method of bringing my photos from iPhoto and music/movies/books/etc from iTunes to my new system? My word documents are easy enough...I keep 3 flash drives updated with them at all times.
    Thanks in advance!

Whoever said you can't sell you iMac with the current Mac OS X is wrong, I believe.
    Unfortunately, it is not wrong.
Any OS purchased/obtained at the app store - as is the case here - is not transferable. The license is tied forever to the Apple ID used to obtain it. The SLA states that the seller needs to erase the drive and reinstall the original system.
    @ Kamikazwe:
You can call Apple and give them your serial number and they will send you copies of your original disks at a nominal charge.
You do need to use your original Snow Leopard disk, boot from it, erase the drive, and reinstall Snow Leopard. The buyer of the machine will need to purchase his/her own copy of Lion or Mountain Lion with their own Apple ID or they will never be able to reinstall or update the OS.
    SLA Excerpt:
    3. Transfer.
    A. If you obtained the Apple Software preinstalled on Apple-branded hardware, you may make a one-time permanent transfer of all of your license rights to the Apple Software (in its original form as provided by Apple) to another party, provided that:  the Apple Software is transferred
together with your Apple-branded hardware; (ii) the transfer must include all of the Apple Software, including all its component parts, printed materials and this License; (iii) you do not retain any copies of the Apple Software, full or partial, including copies stored on a computer or
other storage device; and (iv) the party receiving the Apple Software accepts the terms andcconditions of this License. For purposes of this License, if Apple provides an update (e.g., version 10.8 to 10.8.1) to the Apple Software, the update is considered part of the Apple
Software and may not be transferred separately from the pre-update version of the Apple Software.
    B. If you obtained your license to the Apple Software from the Mac App Store, it is not transferable. If you sell your Apple-branded hardware to a third party, you must remove the Apple Software from the Apple-branded hardware before doing so, and you may restore your system to the version of the Apple operating system software that originally came with your Apple hardware (the “Original Apple OS”) and permanently transfer the Original Apple OS together with your Apple hardware, provided that:  the transfer must include all of the Original
Apple OS, including all its component parts, printed materials and its license; (ii) you do not retain any copies of the Original Apple OS, full or partial, including copies stored on a computer or other storage device; and (iii) the party receiving the Original Apple OS reads and agrees to
accept the terms and conditions of the Original Apple OS license.

  • What is the best method for synchronizing tables in two different DB?

We have a core banking database and this database includes our customer related tables and these tables are really huge.
And we have other database for some applications and this database needs fresh customer data which take place in core banking database.
Our current method is materalized views but we have some performance problems about it.
What can give better performace for synchronizing the tables between databases?
    -oracle streams?
    -triggers?
    -dbms_comparison?
    or anything else?
    Edited by: 983327 on Jan 28, 2013 2:14 PM

Assuming that both databases are Oracle, both run relatively recent versions of Oracle, and your organization has administrative access to both systems ("core banking" databases are often run by third parties), Streams is a more efficient architecture than materialized views on the capture side (assuming that you are doing incremental refreshes with materialized views). It's more work to configure than materialized views but you get much greater flexibility and better performance.
Oracle's direction is to move away from Streams and towards GoldenGate which requires additional licenses. Since Oracle does not plan on enhancing Streams moving forward, if this is a strategic decision for your organization, you might want to look at GoldenGate instead even if it doesn't offer any benefits today over Streams.

  • Best Method For Importing Clips Between FCP Projects

What is the best method for importing clips between FCP 7.0.3 projects?  I am wondering whether or not pulling the clips from the Capture Scratch folder is the way to go or will using Import from the new FCP project create a new folder in Capture Scratch with the imported clips?  I have a new HD camcorder with different clips for different projects and Log and Transfer makes it so easy to bring them all in at once but now wondering how best to separate them into separate Capture Scratch folders for each project.

well, I simply either drag them in to the new/different project from the finder, or drag or copy and paste between open fcp projects.  Never had any problems working this way.  Just remember that if you delete a specific project scratch disk folder, you may be deleting media used in another project.

  • Best Method for transferring projects back and fourth

Hello. I will soon be purchasing an iMac for home use and would like to get some advice on project transfer. I will be doing a lot of video editing back and fourth between the office and home. What is the best method for doing this? Where can i locate the files to make sure that I have everything and wont be missing anything when I bring it home, etc. Thanks for any advice!
    Brandon

Use a (Firewire 800 or faster) external HD to keep your media, events and projects on.
You can then take the drive to work with you and back home. Use FCP X to transfer (or create) the event and projects on this drive and both macs will recognise it.
The drive must be formatted Mac OS Extended (journaled is not important for video drives).

  • Best method for dynamically populating PDF on the web?

    Hi there,
I'm trying to find a web-based solution to populate text within an existing PDF with a person's name (using a name variable within the PDF body copy in several spots).  I know that LiveCycle Designer is the best method for creating dynamic PDF's but since I'm on a Mac, LiveCycle Designer wasn't packaged with my CS5 Suite / Acrobat 9 and I'm not eager to run windows in parallel and pay for acrobat pro a second time just to have it on windows for the LiveCycle functionality...CS5 wasn't cheap ha.
So I'm trying to find out if there are alternative ways to achieve this without going down that road.  I don't mind writing PHP or using some other programming language to set it up online, but I just seem to be finding many different methods coming up and cannot find the most straightforward solution.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

LiveCycle Designer won't do what you want. It requires server software: LiveCycle Forms will do the trick.
You can find information on it here: http://www.adobe.com/products/livecycle/forms/

  • Best method for networking with ubuntu linux

    Hi,
I'm setting up an ubuntu linux fileserver, and I was wondering what the best method for filesharing with my mac is. I'm currently running osx 10.4.11, though I may be upgrading to 10.5 soon. I'll be running SMB networking for a couple of other computers, but I'd prefer something a bit more robust that can handle file permissions etc.

Mac OS X supports NSF out of the box. Configuration isn't documented.
I recall Apple got rid of net info manager in Leopard, so the configuration will be different. Perhaps more unix like.
Mac OS X support the Unix Network File System (NFS). However, it leaves out
    the GUI.
This page show you how to use NetInfo Manager:
    http://mactechnotes.blogspot.com/2005/09/mac-os-x-as-nfs-server.html#c1168221713 40271068
NFS Manager can both setup NFS shares and connect to NFS shares.
    http://www.bresink.com/osx/NFSManager.html
Once you figure out how NFS Manager configures the NFS shares, you can
use Applications > Utilities > NetInfo Manager to create more shares.
You will either have to coordinate Unix Userid number and Unix Group Id number or use the mapall option on the share.
To find out your Mac OS X userid and group id do:
    applications > utilities > terminal
    ls -ln
    ls -l
    # lists the NFS share on your mac
    showmount -e localhost
#list NFS shares on a remote host
    showmount -e remote-ip-address
Once you see what NFS Manager does, you will be able to use NetInfo Manager to manage a connection. In Mac OS 10.4 you can configure the /etc/exports control file. See man exports for the details. Before that you had to have the data in NetInfo manager. When Mac OS X came out, many common Unix control files were not present. Instead the data had to be in NetInfo manager. Over time Apple has added more and more standard Unix control files.
    ======
You do know about the need to match userids & groupids.
    # display uid and gid
    ls -ln
    sudo find / -user short-user-name -exec ls '-l' {} \;
    # on Mac OS X
you will need to go into NetInfo Manager and select user and find your short-user-name. Change uid and guid.
    #on Linux look in
    /etc/passwd
    /etc/group
    # with care...
    # change 1000:20 to your values for uid:gid
    sudo find / -user short-user-name -exec chown 1000:20 {} \;
The manual for Tenon MachTen UNIX (which Apple checked when doing Mac OS
    X) says that one should crate the file /etc/exports, which will cause
portmap, mountd and nsfd to launch at startup via the /etc/rc file. The
file must not contain any blank lines or comments, and each line has the
    syntax
    directory -option[, option] hostlist
where 'directory is the pathname of the directory that can be exported,
and 'hostlist' is a space separated list of hostnames that can access the
    directory. For example
    /usr -ro foo bar
    /etc
    /Applications
    /User/gladys gladys
The client the uses a command like
    /sbin/mount -t type [-rw] -o [options] server:directory mount_point
where 'type' is 'nfs', 'server' the name of the server, 'directory' the
server directory mounted, and 'mount_point' the client mount point. See
    'man mount' for details.
I haven't tried the above, but it would be nice to know if it works on Mac OS X.
    Hans Aberg
This will give you some hints on NFS. Post back your questions.

  • Best method for controlling Office 365 updates

Were looking for the best method for updating Office 365. We will be testing prior to releasing the version to the rest of the company.  We have a couple of methods we're contemplating but looking for any pros or cons for each.  We are also
    using SCCM 2012.
    1. Run setup.exe setting the version and internal install source in an .xml file run as an SCCM package using distribution points as the install source.
    2. Run click2runclient.exe with command lines setting the version and internal install source as an SCCM package using distribution points as the install source.
3  Set the version through group policy and turn on automatic updates and don't specify an install source.
Option 3 appears to be the most straight forward with the least administrative overhead.  Would it be possible to revert back to an earlier version using this method?
I have read various articles but looking for any input as to what is working well  or not working for others.

    Hi,
I would like to share this
blog post with you, which provides an example how to implement a fully automated testing and deployment process of Office 365 updates. This deployment method provides you the ability to test updates before you approve them in my environment.
    The process might look like:
Deploy Office 365 in your environment with Office Deployment Tool, configure the "Updates" element in the configuration.xml file so that updates are enabled and the "UpdatePath" attribute points to an internal source.
Download the latest Office 365 build into a different internal source, configure your test machine to pick up builds from it.
After testing the updates, copy the updates to the first internal source.
You should be able to integrate the process with SCCM to reduce your administrative effort.
    Hope this helps.

  • What is the best method for saving files off of the hard drive?

I would like to save music files and photos somewhere other than my hard drive (eg. CDs, DVDs, zip disks). What is the best method for doing this?

It rather depends on how paranoid you are
External hard drives protect you from hard disk trouble on your machine.
Optical media (CD's, DVD's) protect you from trouble with magnetic disks - such as external hard drives and the HD in your machine. Optical disks are thought to be more reliable that magnetic disks for long term storage.
Off site back-ups will protect you from fire or theft at your home or office.
How paranoid are you? Personally everything is backed up across three diferent external HD's. And maybe twice a year I burn a copy of my photos onto DVDs and they go to a relative's house across town.

    Hi:
Ussually I have to rebuild in AI the company logo (I use to work for industries) to include in FCP edit.
    - If you have CS2, open Photoshop and create a new file using the right preset (i.e. DV PAL) using transparent background. That creates a PSD empty file with all attributes you need (pixels dimensions and aspect ratio) to use later in FCP.
    - Select your work (i.e. the final logo) in the AI canvas and copy it.
    - Paste it in the empty PSD file as "vextor information" (I don't remember right now the exact words!). That way you can resize it in the PSD file without loosing quality.
    - The better ir deciding the size NOW in Photoshop, or create sveral version in different sizes. Yuo'll get better quality id you make the resizings in Photoshop rather that doing a scale in FCP timeline.
    - Once your logo is in the right dimension into the PSD file, save a copy and flatten all layers keeping the transparent background. If you don't need the layers during editing in FCP, you better have all layers flattened.
    - Import that file in FCP.
That's my workflow, but probably you'll find different flavors here!

  • What is the best method for transferring iTunes library from PC to iMac?

I have a new iMac.  I have authorized it with my iTunes account.  My current iTunes library is on a Windows Vista PC, not on the same network.  What is the best method for me to use to transfer the iTunes library from the PC to the iMac?

Did I just answer this in another post for you?

Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

  • What is the best method for backing up photos in IPhoto?

I have over 10,000 photos in IPhoto and am looking for the best method for doing a backup (or an archive?).  I'm now using ICloud and it appears it's just photo streaming and does not have storage capability. External hard drive, copying to a DVD, other suggestions?

    Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate
    My Routine
My Library lives on my iMac. It’s Backed up to  two external hard disks every day. These disks are permanently attached to the iMac. These back ups run automatically. One is done by Time Machine, one is a bootable back up done by SuperDuper
It’s also backed up to a portable hard disk when ever new photos are added. This hard disk lives in my car. For security, this disk is password protected.
I have a second off-site back up at a relative’s house across town. That’s updated every 3 or 4 months.
My Photos are backed up online. There are many options: Flickr, Picasa, SmugMug etc. However, check the terms of your account carefully. While most sites have free uploading, you will often find that these uploads are limited in terms of the file size or the bandwidth you can use per month. For access that allows you to upload full size pics with no restrictions you may need to pay.
Every couple of months I test the back ups to make sure they are working correctly. It’s very easy to mis-configure a back up application, and the only way to protect against that is to do a trial restore.

  • When bouncing- what's best method for smallest file size/highest quality?

I am in the process of embedding 3 mp3's into a PDF to submit as a portfolio. The PDF also has text, and two scores included, and with the 3 embedded mp3's it can't be more than 10mb.
So my question is: When bouncing a project out of Logic, what is the best method for getting the smallest file size, but retaining the best audio quality? And once it's out of Logic and it is an mp3 or other type of audio file, is there a best format for compressing it further, and still maintaining the relative quality?
I bounced out the three projects into wav's. Now I am using Switch for Mac to compress them down to smaller Mp3's. I basically need them to be about 3 mb each. Two of the recordings sound OK at that size, but they are just MIDI(one project is piano and string quartet, the other is just piano- all software instruments. The recording that combines MIDI and Audio and has more tracks (three audio tracks and 10 Midi/software instrument tracks)and sounds completely horrible if I get it under 5 mb as an mp3. The problem is that I need all three to equal around 9mb, but still sound good enough to submit as a portfolio for consideration into a Master's program.
If anyone can help I would really appreciate it. Please be detailed in your response, because I am new to logic and I really need the step by step.
    Thank you...

So my question is: When bouncing a project out of Logic, what is the best method for getting the smallest file size, but retaining the best audio quality?
The highest bitrate that falls within your limits. You'll have to calculate how big your MP3's can be, then choose the bitrate that keeps the size within your limit. The formula is simple: bitrate is the number of kilobits per second, so a 46 second stereo file at 96 kbps would be 96 x 46 = 4416 kbits / 8* = 552 kBytes or 0.552 MB. (*8 bits = 1 Byte)
So if you know the length of your tracks you can calculate what bitrate you need to keep it within 10 MB total.
I consider 128 kbps the lowest bearable bitrate for popsongs and other modern drumkit based music. Deterioration of sound quality is often directly related to the quality of the initial mix and the type of instruments used in it. Piano(-like) tones tend to sound watery pretty quickly at lower bitrates, as do crash and ride cymbals. But don't take my word for it, try it out.
And once it's out of Logic and it is an mp3 or other type of audio file, is there a best format for compressing it further, and still maintaining the relative quality?
You can only ZIP the whole thing after that, but that is just for transport. You'll have to unzip it again to use it. And no, you cannot compress an MP3 any further and still play it.
I bounced out the three projects into wav's. Now I am using Switch for Mac to compress them down to smaller Mp3's.
That is silly, you could have done that in Logic, which has one of the best MP3 encoders built in. And how good encoders are will especially come out at bitrates around or below 128, which you might be looking at.
I basically need them to be about 3 mb each.
So, one more scrap of info we need here: how long are those three pieces, exactly? I'll calculate the bitrate for you - but please bounce 'm directly out of Logic as MP3's. They will very probably sound better than your WAV-conversions made with Switch.

Length of the piece? And does the .Wav bounce you have sound OK?

  • Question: Best method for mounting drives at log-in time?

I would like to know what others consider the best method for mounting drives at log-in time is? I can see a few methods such as start-up items on the client, start-up items on the server to managed users and possibly a start-up script. One wrinkle in the scenario is that users can log-in directly to the server so the method should allow that to happen gracefully. Thanks in advance for your help.

You are asking some really fundamental questions that require quite a lot of explanation. Luckily Apple has some great documentation on their server software.

i am currently trying to get to grips with flv playback with
flash 8. i have come across a number of methods for flv playback
within flash 8 and am curious to know the difference between
methods and ultimately if there is such a difference discover which

In particular i am looking for the best method for allowing

    what are the differences??
any help would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time and

    Flash fan.

Adobe has announced that it has ceased development of Flash for mobile phones (in favour of HTML5, and due to the opposition of both Apple and Microsoft to allow support of Flash for their mobile operating systems), so from that direction neither Microsoft nor Nokia is going to get any help.
If the Adobe Flash Video format specification is publicly available to use or to license (I don't know if it is), then at least Microsoft could implement support for it, if they wanted to (Nokia might not have sufficient rights from Microsoft to add new codecs to Windows Phone).
So, you might direct your question primarily to Microsoft, rather than Nokia (of course, a Microsoft representative will probably read this, too, but whether they'll response or not is another matter).
