Best mic for recording live music with video ipod?

i believe there are mics for recording sound, and believe there are even some which are made for great sound quality such as live music.
if so, which one is the best?
thanks.

This is sort of like asking what is the best motorized vehicle.
There are different mikes for different purposes, instruments, etc. I'd get on Google and look for recording websites.
Myself, I like various Neumann's for certain applications.

  • Recording live music with video iPod...

I tried using my video iPod to record a live music show and was very disappointed with the results. I purchased a MicroMemo digital audio recorder and used a set of stealth mics I've used for years with my portable MiniDisc recorder.
The iPod doesn't allow you to set recording levels and I think that was the problem. The recording was WAY oversaturated and virtually unlistenable. I tried using Audacity to edit the file, but I was unable to fix the oversaturated recording.
Can anyone advise me? Thanks in advance!

    Hi Bill,
I've used plugins in apps such as Pro Tools plugins to clean up
recordings of lectures. Other good audio software
that allow you to filter a sound file include Cubase
    , MacFOH ,
    SoX .
Thanks for the suggestion, Ed, but my recording is SO oversaturated that it can't be salvaged by anything. When you look at the recording in any sound editor, the top is severely clipped. You can't do anything to restore what isn't there to begin with, and that's the top of the waveform.
    Here's
a list of other open source audio projects at
    GNU.
    Nice list! Thanks for that!!!
    Good luck!

I did get some help from XTremeMac's tech support. Sharon Rivera from that company wrote this:
] The way to get true sound is through the line in setting with an
    ] external powered source.
It turns out the battery box (9V) on my Core Sound stealth mics means my mics are powered by an external source. All I have to do next time is use the "line" setting instead of the "mic" setting on the MicroMemo.
    Thanks for your suggestions!

  • Recording live music/sound through iPod.

I know that there's a microphone to record voice for iPod, but could you also record live music through an output on an audio board with the use of the audio cord adapter?

as far as i know no one has come out with a mic adapter for the 5G iPod yet. so until someone does it is not possible.

  • Recording live music with Soundblaster X-Fi Xtr

    Hi,
My new Dell shipped with a Soundblaster X-Fi Xtreme. I told the sales rep I wanted to record li've music into it, and wanted a card with a MIDI port - he said this was the card I needed but now it's arri'ved it hasn't got a MIDI port at all, just mic/line in, and digital in/out as well as the speaker outputs. I'm gonna have to buy an external audio board it seems... In the meantime I want to at least record some basic stuff but I can't work out (I'm new to this) how to overdub. Since I've only got the one line in for my instruments and vocals I want to be able to record over existing tracks I've saved - will someone please tell me how to go about this cos I've looked in all of the help menus and opened all of the software that shipped with it and can't find the right option. I thought it should be possible to achieve in WaveStudio, but this seems to just record over my existing track, not overdub it. Sorry if it's a really obvious question but it's driving me nuts.
Also - any clues as to why an AWFUL, piercing, electronic whine should come through my speakers occasionally when I click on a button in a website, or open a program? Doesn't seem to follow a particular pattern, which makes it difficult to predict. Most unpleasant...
    Thanks!

    sorry, i overlooked the psu,
    the sticker says 550w psu : +3.3v - 30a, +5v - 35a, +12v - 20a
yes the onboard sound is disabled, as is the onboard modem.
I've tried it in slot 3, as well as all other slots and I get the same symptoms in each, I suspected an IRQ conflict to start with, possibly with the IDE controller but with it happening in everything slot I ruled that out for now.
What about changing the PCI latency clock etc... would that have an effect on the card?
I asked the question on the creative labs forum and a user suggested changing the PCI IRQ pool options in the bios but that didnt seem to have any effect either. Im close to giving up with this card but that would be a waste of money til I could afford a new board, CPU etc...
I'd be happier having a bios upgrade than have to change all the settings but I understand this probably isnt going to happen due the age of the motherboard. Funnily enough I havent had any faults using vista other than this, and as I stated I have also tried it with XP Pro SP2.
thanks for your help, and any other help you can offer. Im quite an experienced computer user so get technical if you need to

  • What is the best USB 3.0 (small) ext HDD for recording my music on

    Hello everybody!
    i start with saying...........
    A Happy Newyear!!!!!
I wish you all the very best and love.
    Now for my question.
I would like to know what is the best portable usb 3.0 external HDD for recording my music on.
Because since today i am a very happy new owner of the new Retina Macbook Pro 2.3 GHz, with 8 GB of Ram and 256 GB of Flash.
.... and yes it has the Samsung Retina Display
Since 8 years i use Logic Pro and because the flash is only 256 Gb i want to record on a external drive
and not on the internal storage (and especially now with usb 3.0).
But i would like to know what is the best portible external HDD for this function.
500 GB is enough for me because i have 2x a 2 TB for my Mac Pro and Macbook pro where i make back ups from all my music (2 back ups just to be safe).
    Some Examples i saw:
    - WD My passport USB 3.0 - 500 GB harde schijf
    - G-Technology 500GB G-DRIVE Slim USB 3.0-harde schijf
    - LaCie 500GB Rugged Triple USB 3.0 externe harde schijf
    - Freecom Mobile drive mg 500 GB harde schijf
    - Western Digital My Passport Essential SE USB 3.0 500 GB harde schijf
I would really like some good advise in this.
Hope you guys can help me out with this.

I cannot speak specifically about any of those Ext HDs because i don't own any of them..
    But...
Make sure the external drive is 7200rpm.... and not 5400rpm or a 'green' drive with something called "varipower' or a similar name...

  • Record live music in MP3

    Hi,
Is there any model that best to record live music in MP3 format for at least an hour or so? Also, the play back still ok with internal speaker.
    Thanks,
    Bagus

I don't know of any model that records into MP3.
Most models can record into AAC Mono. But you need an extra application to record over 2 minutes at a time (depending on the model)
The original N-Gage phone http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N-Gage supports stereo AAC recording from the FM radio or an external line-in. But you will need a stereo microphone with high impedance output to connect it into the line in.

  • What's Best Approach for Multitrack Classical Music?

Can someone suggest the best approach for recording classical musicians onto
four tracks? In this scenario, they play until they make a mistake on, say,
measure 24, stop, then (take 2) go back to measure 20 and play until the next
rough spot, and so on. Ultimately there may be 15 takes that all need to be
    trimmed and stitched together.
In the old (tape) days, this was pretty basic editing. I would use a blade and block
to cut out all the bad stuff on the multitrack tape, then I could mix. But how do I
do this in Audition? (I use version 1.5.)
I can't do the cuts it in edit view because the tracks would get out of sync
Assuming all the takes are in one session, in multitrack view, this most basic of
functions seems to elude me. What am I missing?

If you follow Steve's advice, and after doing the edits you discover

I could be wrong about this in the classical music environment,
where things are not close-mic'ed but if I am, I am confident Steve
    will correct me.  Ha.
You always run the risk of small changes between takes - and that's where Audition 3 and the new improved crossfades score rather heavily. You won't notice 1dB on a single instrument across a fade though - it's hard to spot this as a jump, even, unless it's on pure tone. No, I very rarely close-mic stuff at all, although I did with a clavichord recently - it's seriously too quiet to mic any other way.

when recording classical music, any engineer worth anything has the mix down pat as it's being recorded.
That's the way they used to work, certainly - but not nowadays, especially if it's done on location, which most classical recording is. What's more likely to happen is that you'd use decent mic preamps feeding straight into a multitrack, or even some software on a laptop. I generally record like that - but I also feed the multitrack outputs to a Yamaha mixer via ADAT, do a mix on that and record it back to a spare multitrack pair. I don't actually need to do that - but having a mix available from the multitrack that's pretty much there is good as far as being able to play back takes to conductors is concerned.
Of course, one of the other reasons that classical sessions recorded on location aren't mixed on the spot is that the monitoring conditions are invariably far from ideal, and I'd have it that no engineer worth anything would ever risk a final mix done on location.
But I only get paid to do all of this on a regular basis, so what would I know? Must be something though - my customers come back for more...

  • Recording live music on 2nd Gen ipod nano

    Greetings-
I recently purchased a 2nd Gen ipod nano 4 gig. I'd like to be able to record live music, then load it in my computer. I obviously don't expect CD quality, just decent enough playback to be able to replay the music on my computer (using the Amazing Slow Downer, for example) to learn new tunes.
I would typically take it to an Irish music session, record the musicians then go home and try and learn the tunes.
    Suggestions for a microphone?
Is this done through the memo function of the ipod?
If y'all have experience doing that kind of thing, I'd appreciate your kind advice.

As Lougoose and others have said, the "Music Videos" folder is simply there by default in the iTunes software, and does not have to do with your nano having the ability to play videos or not.
If you'd like to let Apple know about this, as a possible feature in a future update of iTunes or iPod firmware, write your suggestion on these Feedback forms:

  • Best Mic for Moving Target

I am doing remote podcast interviews. I have two small desktop stands, the recorder, but need a couple of durable mics. I was considering 2 SM57s or 58s, but thought I would ask everyone here for a little advice first.
Price range up to $200 each.
    Needs to endure road conditions.
Needs to be able to record voice only.
Users are not pros, so will tend to move around (sit back etc)
    Noisy background sometimes.
Let me know what would be the best mic for these parameters.
    Thanks!

That was very helpful. Mostly because it just confirms the use of the 58s. Just wanted to make sure I did not miss another that might be a better choice. Thanks WH!
You're welcome. Glad to add my 2.7 cents worth (inflation).
Many big podcasters have gone with headset or lavaliere mics.
A good headset mic can work well for an interview (it will stay the same distance away from the speaker).
As for a lavaliere, I know they are used on TV a lot.
However, for amateur interviewees, it may not be a good choice. My advice is to avoid the temptation to use lavaliere microphones, at least for interview recording. Clipped to a lapel, or hanging around the neck, the lav mic is in a less-than-ideal position for good voice pick-up. Additionally, if the subject is moving around, clothes and cables will likely add unacceptable noise.

  • I need a digital voice recorder best suited for recording my voice for chorus and quartet rehearsals

I'm looking for a small digital Sony voice recorder best suited for recording singing for chorus and quartet rehearsals.  I received model ICD-AX412 but don't think that's the right one for this. I found a couple other models PCMD50 and PCMM10 online but want to know what to get!

    Hello Carol,
    Welcome to Sony Community.
When recording a chorus place the IC recorder on a table approximately 2 to 3 meters (80 to 120 in.) from the performer(s).
Set up the IC recorder with the display window facing up, and with the built-in microphones pointing towards the sound source.
Refer to page # 34 of the Manual (ICD-AX412) about placing the IC Recorder for recording chorus.
Also, select the Recording scene as “Lecture” for recording a chorus lesson.
You can refer to page # 32 and 33 of the Manual to select the recording scene.
Please mark it as "Accepted Solution" if you find this information useful.
    Regards,

  • Best practice for integrating oracle atg with external web service

    Hi All
What is the best practice for integrating oracle atg with external web service? Is it using integration repository or calling the web service directly from the java class using a WS client?
    With Thanks & Regards
    Abhishek

Using Integration Repository might cause performance overhead based on the operation you are doing, I have never used Integration Repository for 3rd Party integration therefore I am not able to make any comment on this.
Calling directly as a Java Client is an easy approach and you can use ATG component framework to support that by making the endpoint, security credentials etc as configurable properties.
    Cheers

What is the best way for sharing an iPad with 2 iPhones using different Apple acount ?

You can't share with other devices if you are using different Apple ID's and iTunes account on them. You can only share if you use the same ID.
