Best mid range camera for FCPX.

Hi
My son has just completed his degree in media so is now looking for a decent camera to produce some example work on, he is also keep to use FCP X to do the editing on.
I have done a small amount of research and was going to get him the Panasonic V720 camera but there seems to be a lot of discussion around importing the video be either possible or just complicated work arounds
Can anyone either recommend a camera that can just be imported direct or say whether the Panasonic will import!?
Thanks

I'm using its predecessor, the hcv707 - works like charme! 1080/50p with 28mbps - awesome (in your country: 60p)!
The other final candidate was some Sony, but this model had a smaller sensor.
The main disadvantage - if you you would call it - of the Panasonic: controls only via touchscreen. The better/pricier models (909) allow a manual turning of some 'ring' at the front of the device. So, e.g. switching focus while recording is a bit tricky with the 720, compared to the 2x pricier 909/929 .... but that is a more ... cinematographers nice-to-have.-
A completely diff. range of products are 'still cams with video' - the famous videoDSLRs, as Canon 550/600/650, or the Sony NEX (or Samsung NX) devices. The changable glasses allow high flexibility, you can start with a 'kit'-glas, later add speedy glasses (<f 1.8), or long lenses (animals), macro, etc etc .... = $$$$
in short: there's no 'can do it all'-cam.
It depends very much on your needs,
FCPX supports all actual AVCHD devices (and more).

  • Which is the best low-cost camera for my use?

Hi everyone. Been busy and off the forums for a while, but need your expertise once again.
I just found out that the Panasonic HVX-200p that's been on loan to me for 2 years has to be returned. Since I run a non-profit, I am thinking about asking my major donors to buy one for us. So, the question becomes which one? I own the CS4 MC, and you can see my other info in my profile.
I only do educational-type videos in an interview format against a green screen so far. I've been capturing direct to OnLocation via 1394 FireWire at 720p/60fps and editing in an HDV 720p/30 sequence. I sometimes do "man on the street" segments (capturing to OnLocation on laptop). I integrate numerous PSD graphics as educational slides, a lot of AE projects I get from videohive and customize, render, & import into PP, and motion backgrounds like Pond5's weekly free stock footage (much of this stuff gets resized, of course). I do some scoring and some SFX and export the audio to SB for touchup. I use a bunch of Lowes/Home Depot worklamps with fluorescent bulbs for lighting the subject and background. I key my backgrounds using PP/AE Dynamic Link. Oh, and I'll need a lapel mic and a tripod, too. I would prefer not to rule out shooting at 1080i/p at some point.
I export H.264 highlight clips which get uploaded to Vimeo and embedded in our website using prettyPhoto features. Ultimately, the finished PP project is exported as MPEG2-DVD, finished in Encore, burned via ImgBurn. If you want to see a good example, watch this http://vimeo.com/23346431. Caution: this is religious material. Be sure to repent before watching
So, there's not really much heavy lifting here. But when it comes to what is the minimum I need with the options of capture formats, etc., I'm clueless. I've read about problems with AVCHD, and although low-cost, is it really a problem for what I do? I trust this forum more than online reviews, and I'd appreciate recommendations of specific models and where to buy, if possible. Also, what about used cameras? Please remember, the budget is tight.
All suggestions and questions are welcome and very much appreciated.
    Paul

Actually, two things surprise me in your statement and one is simply incorrect:
As for Broadcast quality..... a little station called CNN - you might have heard about them bought 250 of them from Panasonic about a year ago.
First, that CNN would buy JVC cameras not from JVC, but from Panasonic.
Second, there are no JVC cameras on the BBC approved list at all, see http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/commissioning/site/BBC_Approved_HD_Cameras.pdf and the only affordable ones on the list in the handheld category are the Canon XF300/305. Maybe that is the reason the BBC bought 350 of these. Even the Sony XDCAM EX is only accepted in combination with a 50 Mb disk drive, not in the native 35 Mb format.
The BBC approved list is a list that most broadcasters adhere to, including CNN, Discovery, ARD and NGC.
The JVC GY-HD100U is definitely not acceptable for HD, and in no way HD broadcast ready. But that CNN bought that number of these cameras is probably caused by the fact that they think these deliver better quality than regular phones. And it does not use XDCAM, but a very simple HDV codec, limited to 1280 x 720 resolution. See http://pro.jvc.com/prof/attributes/specs.jsp?model_id=MDL101539&feature_id=03
This simply means that the Canon codec is very acceptable to the BBC for HD programs. The XF100 uses the same codec, but is only a single sensor camera and for that reason alone not approved by the BBC.
Paul, if you can live with the limitations of a single sensor camera - and given your intended purposes, I think you can - the JVC does not even come close and the XF100 material will be hardly worse than the XF300/305. To the untrained eye the results are almost the same.

  • Best Old Digital Camera For G5?

    Hi,
All i want is a no nonsense SLR style camera (one that i could perhaps buy different lenses for) that will work well with my Powermac G5 1.8 Dual with 4G Ram using iPhoto'09 and possibly an old vers of Aperature.
I currently have only used my iphone's camera or an old 3meg compact pentax.
I'm in the UK and i've seen old Canon G5's 5meg's going cheaply for £60 but wondered if i'd notice the quality using that or whether i should go for higher meg's.
I would like to take pics in a RAW format of my family so that i can always edit good quality pictures from the start.
I'm concerned that the huge files produced from 14 Mb camera's will push my G5 to it's limit!
    Any recommendations would be appreciated.
    Thanks

The only camera model among all that William Bothel lists that is not not  supported in my current G5 setup would be the Nikon D4 which, as he says, has only been announced.  That's why I qualified my challenge:
…to name a single digital camera that has been on the market for over four months that generates raw files that will not transparently open on my G5 setup.
I will concede that once it hits the shelves, the Nikon D4,—which will cost $6,000, body only (without a lens, warranty extra) at discount stores like B&H—then I'll have to install the soon to be released Photoshop CS6 on a Mac-Intel box.
The Adobe DNG Converter won't do you any good for the Nikon D4, as the last version that will run on a Power PC is DNG Converter 6.4.
Coming to think of it, I should have no trouble at all batch-converting the NEF files from the Nikon D4 on my inherited MacBook (discarded by my wife) running Snow Leopard or Lion to raw DNG files and copy tem to my current G5 setup, should I win the lottery and buy a D4.
My point is that, for somebody with requirements as modest as the OP has, his computer is not a limitation or a cause of concern when choosing his DSLR, which I strongly suspect will not be a Nikon D4.

    Hi there,
Pretty much all DV, HDV, and AVCHD camcorders are compatible with the basic iMovie and the more advanced Final Cut. If you intend to start with basic editing software and perhaps upgrade in the future I'd recommend getting one that records in one of these formats.

  • What is the best simple prosumer camera for FCE?

What is the simplest high quality camera to shoot, import to FCE with the least amount of conversion of footage time? Currently have Canon Vixia and all the conversions to get a simple output for the web are wearing on me! Your experience and expertise is appreciated. I work on PowerMacs, no intel processors.

Depending on your needs a DSLR might be a good way to go. You can get a Canon T3i for around $600. It's a great camera, I've outlined the pros and cons I've found after working with everything from bottom-of-the-line Rebels to the 5D Mk III. I love them for what I do, but you'll have to try one out and see for yourself.
    The cons:
Battery consumption. My canon battery lasts about an hour of shooting at the most. Buy lots of batteries and keep them charged!
Overheating. They do warm up quick and they will overheat in sunlight. Have some sort of shade for them and you'll be fine!
12 minute record time. Shooting at the highest quality, you cannot shoot more than 12 minutes at a time. If you're doing an interview, you will be taking lots of breaks.
No autofocus. If you shoot scripted material this is no problem, as you should be manually focusing anyways. However, keep in mind that most DSLR's do not have proper autofocus during recording. Those that do have a LONG way to go before they will really be useful. These cameras are just not made to do it.
    The benefits are:
Shooting MOV format, though it is compressed in H.264 which is not very edit friendly. You can do it, just make sure that once you finish editing your sequence, change your sequence settings to Apple Intermediate Codec and re-render the whole sequence before you export.
Interchangeable lenses. You get the whole lineup of Canon lenses to choose from, plus any other companies lens with an adapter.
Depth of field. The larger image sensor lets you blur out your background for cinematic looks that add another level of professionalism.
Low Light performance. Large sensors also are great in dark conditions as they capture much more light, giving better colors and lower noise.
SD card recording. They're fast, reliable and cheap. You can buy 10 and just keep switching them out once they're full, no dealing with tapes or discs.
Plus, you can shoot stills too! I know its a lot of information but I hope it helps!

  • Best "pro-sumer" camera for FCP?

Hoping to find a $600-$900 camera that is Final Cut Friendly.  (I can spend more but would love not to.)
I'm absolutely overwhelmed by the websites.... Would any of you be willing to be my hero?
    Brad in Denver
PS. The only thing I MUST have is:
         • external audio in.  Would love a decent zoom too.
         • SD or Hard Drive storage
         • Great zoom would be fab.

    Bubalooney wrote:
…  How does one make an inteligent decision about how much zoom is enough?  …
A professional would never ever … ok, in very rare cases use a zoom.
    Why?
A Zoom is always a compromise - in quality (ok, will an amateur notice? No), and, more important, in 'speed'.
Most BigZooms offer very poor speed, starting somewhere at f3.6 and finally on long range, f8.0, f10!
Next: a tele-lens creates tons of shake! Without stabilizer, it's impossible to handle a 500mm lens. Most/many videoDSLRs do not offer staibilizers.
So, the question is: Why using a zoom at all? Why using a SuperZoom at all?
I'm usign a Pana707 - with a very strong zoom, and superb stabilizer (and using a tripod); because; i like to record the soccerr games of my son's team. I need a simple to use aka fast solution. Using the same cam indoors is nice with its 25mm, but it is really poor under low light conditions; a designated device (Canon Rebel, 35mm/f1.4.) offers much, much, much better, superb quality.-
It depends too much on your individual needs and conditions:
    • a 'system cam' with interchangeablel glases could be better.
    • a tiny all-in-one (like mine) could be better.
hard to give a general advice.

  • What is the best camera for me?

I don't know much at all about cameras, so I'm really hoping someone will be able to help me! I'm looking for a camera that's better than your standard point and shoot digital camera but one that doesn't cost a fortune. I want to be able to take pictures of NASCAR cars going down the track without them being blurry. I would also like to be able to take pictures of things that are sitting still or aren't going quite 200 mph. I guess I just want an all around good camera that also has the ability to take good, non-blurry pictures of NASCAR cars in motion. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the best camera and/or lense would be for this. Thanks so much for your help!

This is one instance where good gear helps but knowing how to use it properly is more important. Panning skills will be important, & so will choosing the right focal length of lens. I'll assume you have to shoot from the stands but don't know how far you'll be from the stretch of track you're hoping to shoot the cars along. A camera with a good AF system matched to a lens with fast AF capabilities will help too, but you could do this old school & use manual settings & manual focus too. You would set up the camera based on the lighting favoring a Tv that can freeze the car but blur the background & wheels / tires. Then you pick an ISO to allow shooting in the f8 range at that Tv & pre focus on the section of track in front of you. Pan with the car or group of cars as they go by & take a few shots while they are in the zone you've pre focused on.
If however you're really serious about it & think you'll attend enough events to justify spending the money the 7D, 1D2n, 1D3 & 1D4 are all worthy bodies for action thanks to their AF systems & frame rate. For lenses I suggest considering any of these as a starting point but again you may need longer depending on access to the action. 70-200 f4 L, or the IS version or maybe the f2.8 versions but since the 70-300 L IS seems to have both a very fast & accurate AF system it would be my first choice as a from the stands starting point. The 100-400 L would be my next addition to a motorsports kit but I don't think it's the lens I'd start with.
As for setting up a camera for action (DSLR's but some P & S may work too) I wrote an article which is a good starting point & the suggested shutter speeds for prop planes fit a rookie shooting motorsports so I recommend reading this plus use the link in my last post for another set of lessons from Canon that you should read.
    http://www.rccanada.ca/rccforum/showthread.php?t=147971
As a side note I started attending R/C events to work on my panning skills so I'd be better at the track. A smooth panning swing is developed through practice & it's the key to good results, and follow through after the last shot in each sequence.

  • Best Camera for Graphic Design

I am a Web Designer and Graphic designer in American Samoa. I am looking at cameras for when local clients want me to do work.
What is the best one to get. I want a professional grade, not some $49 special from Wal-Mart.

Bill & Brendon, I have a G1X which I got to replace the G10 my wife has decided is now hers   The G10 has totally changed my wifes approach and enthusiasm for taking pictures, mainly because her pictures are soo much better than with the little cheap compact she was using.
However, and it's a pretty big 'however' IMO, a G series camera is a convenient carry around camera that gives good results (the IQ from my G1X is at least as good as the Canon prosumer level DSLRs that I get to process files from, but it sure as heck is not a DSLR, and does not give the sort of control you'd need for a working camera.   I actually PM'd the OP to keep an off topic thread growing (but it happened anyway)  I suggested a used 5D2 and a Canon 100mm macro lens.  That combination would be capable of outstanding product shots, and a lot of what a web/garphic designer might need to shoot.
BTW I get to process files from different assistants/second shooters, and can compare IQ.  From the Canon range, the 5D variants can always match the image quality of my 1D bodies (I use 1DsMK3 and a 1DMK4 bodies).  The prosumer cameras I have delt with don't come close, and even 7D shots fall short).  Remember that is from processing many hundreds (probably thousands) of images from those cameras, so first hand experience.
As for my G1X, I got it as a carry around camera, and to take on overseas holidays as I am fed up with lugging heavy camera gear around, but I not yet convinced that I will feel comfortable relying on a compact camera.

  • What's the best way to cut annoying mid-range frequencies?

Does anybody know how to eliminate/cut mid-range frequencies that cause the speakers to "buzz"? Hi-cut and low-cut filters don't help much.
    Thanks
    Anya

hi, anya, how is your cd going?
there are a number of reasons for spiked upper mids.
inferior conversion, inferior monitors, small square rooms, inferior mic/mic-pre.
i heard your original demos when you posted them here, so i'm guessing it's your speakers, as i didn't hear that much wrong with the demo over my monitors.
the region of frequencies you are refering to are what superior gear addresses.
check out the "airwindows plugin' by chrisj. (kagi-airwindows plug-ins)
he has some fee ones which i'm now using a lot.
his commercial ones are well priced.
i have noticed quite a sweetening of the "presence range", which is where your problem is, using his channel and channel eq.
i like his stuff and will buy some more soon.
also try sonalksis' eq, it's very sweet sounding and subtle.
the udder cause of "buzz" could be sub bass overdrive, ie: too much bass that your speakers cannot handle and is making them vibrate. this sort of bass boost does nother for your mix except subtract from its headroom/dynamics.
again, this is due, generally, to using headphones or small bookshelfs to mix on.

  • Best MIDI controller in the $100-$200 range

    Hello,
I was at Best Buy today toying around with some of the 49 key M-Audio controllers and I really liked them! I'm getting more and more into composition recently and figure I'll need a MIDI controller at some point, so what's the best MIDI controller in the $100-$200 range? For usage with Logic Studio applications.

    Hello,
I have an M-Audio Keystation 49e and I love it. It's great for composing and its pretty cheap... if you're a serious pianist/keyboardist I would recommend getting the larger (I think its 61 keys) model, but my 49 works great for me.
Plug and play!! no installation of anything required... my Mac recognized it instantly and it works great with Logic Studio

  • HT4664 What is the best graphics card for FCPX?

In the nonstop anti-FCPX propaganda is an article of interest — posted 7/9/12 — comparing the benchmarks of FCPX and PP6.
    http://www.streamingmedia.com/Producer/Articles/ReadArticle.aspx?ArticleID=83582 &PageNum=1
The system used was a 2 x 2.93 GHz Quad-Core Mac Pro from early 2009 running MacOS X version 10.7.4 with 12 GB of RAM and an NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800 graphics card with 1.5 GB of onboard RAM.
In most cases PP6 outperformed FCPX with this configuration. However, in the comments Ben Balser pointed out that FCP X's A/VFoundation engine wasn't ideal on the NVIDA card:
"Quadro is actually not the best card for FCP X's A/VFoundation engine, but great for CS6's Mercury engine, so the test is amazingly flawed right there. Try both on a 5780 card and watch things drastically change. I've done that test myself. Exporting to Compressor uses a MUCH more sophisticated encoding engine meant for higher level, professional transcoding, not simple outputs, which are faster using Export Media…"
Apple lists this card on its support page: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4664
    So,
What is the best graphics card for FCPX?

    Ben,
Thanks for chiming in on that article. It would be good to have a benchmark comparison with the two systems each with a preferred card.
I'm hoping to see some other comparisons on this thread. Also, some links to other articles about best practices and configurations.

  • Best Midi Keyboard for garage band?
