Best MIDI controller in the $100-$200 range

Hello,
I was at Best Buy today toying around with some of the 49 key M-Audio controllers and I really liked them! I'm getting more and more into composition recently and figure I'll need a MIDI controller at some point, so what's the best MIDI controller in the $100-$200 range? For usage with Logic Studio applications.
Thanks!

Hello,
I have an M-Audio Keystation 49e and I love it. It's great for composing and its pretty cheap... if you're a serious pianist/keyboardist I would recommend getting the larger (I think its 61 keys) model, but my 49 works great for me.
Plug and play!! no installation of anything required... my Mac recognized it instantly and it works great with Logic Studio

  • What is the best MIDI controller for Logic, and is Axiom Pro the only line with "Hyper Control?

What is the best MIDI keyboard/control surface to use with LOGIC (Studio - which I assume is the latest & greatest version) and is Axiom Pro the only line that has Hyper control? I already own the Axiom Pro 61, but prefer more keys, and though I like much about it, the keys aren't very easy for playing more complex material, and there is an obvious delay regarding attack response (esp. noticeable at faster speeds). There are other issues as well I've read of regarding key sticking (though I consider myself lucky mine do not, there is nontheless a sluggish clunckiness issue which neither helps agility/acuracy nor the delay factor.) and the unit not lasting very long before it breaks and needs repairing. And lastly, I am no fan of Avid and care not to support them in the least.

Sorry, but is this an iPad question? Axiom Pro 61 is not an iPad-compatible peripheral, so perhaps you mean to post in the Logic forum?

  • Mute Button on a Midi controller. How do I set this up?

I want to setup a button on my midi controller keyboard, as a mute button for a certain track.
I select the track, hit 'Mute' with the mouse, and then 'learn controller assignment'. I then proceed by pushing the button on the midi controller.
The Parameter is "Learned", but doesn't work as a toggle button: I have to press the button two times for it to work.
    Any Ideas?

fotofono, depending on the kind of result you're after, you may want to consider a sidechain. I'm pasting text from a previous post I did where someone wanted to be able to create a stutter effect (with mute) on a vocal track. It may apply to what you're trying to do.
    Here's how:
On the vocal track you want to create the stutter effect, insert a noise gate.
On the noise gate plug-in window, look for the sidechain input (top right).
Pick 'Bus 32' for example, or a bus that you don't have in the environment window.
Pick an empty midi track in the arrange window, insert an EXS piano or any other Audio Instrument (something with good attack works best). Assign it's output to Bus 32.
Since bus 32 is not in the environment window (make sure it isn't), it won't output any sound to the main outs, and you won't hear that Audio Instrument you've just inserted. Nevertheless the audio is still being routed within Logic, and will affect the SideChain of the noise gate, which is what you want to create the stutter.
Sequence the rhythm for the stutter into the midi track (you won't hear the Audio Instrument, but you should hear the vocal track stuttering to your midi track playing), do any quantizing you want, etc, and the noise gate will follow the notes.
You can also tweak the Noise Gate of course, to ease the threshold of the stutter, etc.
Even if it's not what you're after, you may find it's a really useful tool for many kinds of results.

  • I want to use my ipad as a midi controller on my MacBook pro via USB no with wiFi connection, is this possible ?

hi guys, i am new to garageband.
i have the Ipad 4th generation and just installed garageband on my mackbook pro, i see that i can use my ipad as a midi controller via WiFi but there is a delay, my question is: Can i use my ipad as a midi controller via the USB connection, that will eliminate de lag or delay.
    thanks

Keynote Remote, but you will need wifi. You can set up an ad-hoc wifi network from your Macbook itself ("Create Network" from the Wifi menu), which the iPad can connect to.

  • Alesis Midi Controller Keyboard setup with Logic Pro 8

Hi, just wondering if anyone can help me... I'm a complete newbie!
Recently bought a Macbook with Logic Pro 8 and would like to get set up for some home recording. The keyboard I want to use as a midi controller is the Alesis QS6 which has been in the wardrobe for some time. I have a Midiman USB midi interface.
When I connect it all up, I can't get it to make any sounds from Logic, only from the keyboard itself, which I don't want. A friend suggested taking out one of the midi cables so now I have only Midi out from the keyboard running into Midi in on the Midiman. When I play the keyboard the notes register on the Transport bar and I can even record them but I cannot hear anything.
Can anyone tell me what settings I need to have on the Alesis? Should the Keyboard Mode be on Normal, CH Solo or Out 1,2,3...16? I read somewhere I need to turn General Midi off, does this sound right? Is it something to do with midi channels - I don't even know how to tell which midi channel is selected in Logic.
If anyone has experience with using the QS6 with Logic I would love to hear from you!!!
    Thanks!

Run the Audio/MIDI Setup utility. Is your keyboard/MIDI interface displayed in there?
If not, OSX does not see your MIDI device. Install it's drivers if it has them. If it doesn't have any drivers, your MIDI config might have got hosed. What keyboard is it?
Unplug and replug it, directly, don't use a hub. Does it show up in the AMS utility now? Try powering it for an adapter, not from USB.
If you still get no joy, I'll give you some procedures to try...

  • Best Practice for Change Maintenance Order Number Range

    Hello
We have decided that our Maintenance Orders will always start with the year of the open date. Example 201112345155
Every year we will need to change the number ranges
What is the best practice to change the order number range? What is the best approach here?
I have also another question. Why the "Current Number" is not incremental?
    Thanks for the help

    Hi,
The current number can be explained by use of buffering of the numbers. Buffering is defined via transaction SNRO, the  AUFTRAG object is relevant for orders. When buffering is active, a set of unused numbers are assigned to each application server.
In your example -  The fiirst 20 numbers were taken from the available number range and assigned to the buffer (possible 10 numbers to each of two servers). As orders are created a number is assigned from the buffer. Once the buffer values are used a further set of numbers are taken from the number range and the current number is increased (by buffer value).

  • VESTAX VCI-100 DJ MIDI CONTROLLER Will it work with basic IMAC?

So my kid has a 1 year old base model IMAC - we upgraded only the ram.. But as I read it... IMAC has not sound cart. He wants the VESTAX DJ MIDI CONTROLLER but this model has not sound card.. So I need to know if it will work or do we need to buy external sound card?

Because this is a MIDI over USB 2 device, it should interact properly with your iMac. To be sure, however, you should address your question pre-sale directly to Vestax here: [email protected]
Many of the questions you might have are likely answered in this document, the user manual for the VCI-100 DJ MIDI Controller.

  • Is there a Mainstage templet for the Novation Impulse 61 midi controller?

I have just recently converted from PC to Mac for the primary purpose of using it to run my MIDI controller in a live music setting in our worship service. Based on most of my research prior to purchasing the Mac, the recommendations I was hearing was that Mainstage 3 was going to be the best solution. I still believe that to be true, however I cant find any templates for the Novation Impulse 61 midi controller.  I could try to build one myself, but being new to this environment I thought it might be easier if I could use one that was already created.
I was able to use Automap 4 to set up Logic Pro X.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    travbott

I just got my Novation Impulse and it is disappointing that their automap software does nothing for mainstage users. I guess it is a matter of old-school hand-programming one button at a time, per patch. Have you gone down this road yet?

  • What to buy? I want to use my Technics KN-5000 as the MIDI controller.

    Hi,
I tried searching for similar threads but couldn't find something that close to my particular situation. I'm completely new to Logic and computer MIDI in general, at the moment I have...
    Technics KN-5000
    iMac 24"
From what I've read and heard I am planning to buy...
    Logic Studio
    a USB-MIDI converter cable
    My main questions are:
Is this all I need to get started with Logic?
Are there any disadvantages to using an older keyboard as opposed to a new purpose-built MIDI controller?
Will I only be able to use the software instruments from Logic, or will I be able to use the instruments from the KN-5000?
Will I be able to map any controls from the KN5000 to Logic functions (sliders, etc.)?
When capturing MIDI will Logic capture the full range of features from the KN5000 (sustain pedal, etc.)?
Is there anything else I should consider buying?
I appreciate that I've given a whole load of questions, if anyone can answere any of the questions it'd me much appreciated. Also, I can only apologise for being an annoying noob!
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi, Welcome to the forum!
    1. To get starting with Logic Yes!
you don't say how much ram you've got
    but it is advisable 2GB.
    2. Nope.
    3. You can use both, but after listen the sounds you have in Logic
    I don't think you'll use the KN's.
    4.Problably Yes.
    5. Yes!
    6. An audio interface if you plan to record audio,
Monitors (speakers) I believe it's a must, I don't believe you get satisfaction from
    iMac speakers...
Well, next time try to post only one question, I'm getting dizzy... ;o)
    Peace,

  • Which is the best MIDI interface to use with Logic 7 ?

    Hi folks :o)
Firstly, thanks all for any advice you can give. I'm a pro user, but right in the middle of a major upgrade (G4/OS9/CubaseVST32 >> G5/OSX/CubaseSX3/Logic7) & feel a huge learning curve coming on!
    The situation is this:
I have a Steinberg Midex 8 midi interface, plus a MOTU MTPav in the cupboard. The Midex took place of the MTPav because it had much better midi timing under OS9 with Cubase... The Midex8 drivers for OSX, however, are still beta & a pile of rubbish. (It keeps losing communication with the G5.) I'm fed up with how bad Steinberg have been sorting (not!) these problems out (not to mention the fact that Cubase SX3 can't recognise my 'studio' created in Audio Midi Setup either.. arghh!), so I'm considering jumping ship & going entirely to Logic in one hit, plus whichever is the best midi-interface for this software & OSX.
As food for thought, I'm currently thinking of tracking down a 'Unitor 8', having made the (perhaps wrong) assumption that it'd work 'best' with Logic seeing as it was made by Emagic. BUT, despite a lengthy search in Logic 7's manuals & this forum, I can't find any mention of Emagic's 'Active Midi Transmission' protocol & whether or not Logic 7 supports it; AMT is the only reason I'd buy the Unitor. (I've got all the other bases covered with the MTPav.) I'm also concerned about the long-term support issues regarding drivers for the Unitor 8 & OSX; ****, I'm having enough problems with Steinberg & their Midex 8 (which is still a current product in theory!) without throwing Emagic & a midi interface that's no longer manufactured into the pot...
So..... What do you folks feel is the best midi interface to use with Logic 7 as regards tight midi timing & system reliability? Can anyone out there with a big midi setup categorically say "I've got one (or more) of these MIDI interfaces, it works beautifully under OSX & Logic 7, & the MIDI timing is rock-solid, even when put under heavy midi 'duress' " ??
Many thanks again in advance for any feedback!
Your new Logic Pro virgin ;o)
    Jason

Thanks for your reply folks. It's good to hear a number of you are having good results with your MTPav - I guess I'll pull mine out of the cupboard in that case!
As an aside, it's been interesting to note how difficult it's been to get a clear answer from companies (be it shops or Apple) as to whether or not Logic 7 supports 'Active Midi Transmission' on the old Unitor 8 MkII..... (The reference manual has one mention of it in the index, yet points to a page that doesn't say anything about AMT at all!)
If anyone here DOES have a clear answer about AMT with Logic 7, I'd be very interested to hear about it... thanks.
    Kind regards,
    JC

  • I am recording with Logic Pro X, using my Yamaha XS8 keyboard as a Midi controller. I also have a Thunderbolt Display. Every time I play and release a note on the keyboard, the Thunderbolt Display speaker emits a doink sound. How do I get it to stop?

I am recording with Logic Pro X, using my Yamaha XS8 keyboard as a Midi controller. I also have a Thunderbolt Display. Every time I play and release a note on the keyboard, the Thunderbolt Display speaker emits a doink sound. What is causing it and how do I get it to stop? My sound is running through the Saffire Pro 40 Interface (Focusrite) into external speakers with powered amps.
Also, When I record I am hearing little pops in the system. I have checked all of my meters and they are not clipping. What is causing it and how do I get it to stop?

    Pancenter,
Thanks for the response, but I do not have a midi interface. I am using a midi to usb connector cable, thus bypassing the need for a Midi interface.
The Mac reads the USB cable as a midi device, but not the keyboard that I am trying to use as a controller. I have tried it with my korg sp 300 and with my Nord Electro 2.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks,

    Tristan...
This is what you have, correct?
    http://www.alesis.com/usbmidicable
    This from Alesis..
"The AudioLink Series USB cable receives and outputs MIDI signal thanks to its internal interface. The USB-MIDI Cable connects plug-and-play to your Mac or PC for an all-in-one USB-MIDI solution."
Notice, -internal interface-. What you have is a simple USB MIDI Interface. Most MIDI interfaces are USB.
My point is (was), MIDI OUT of the Korg goes to the connector marked MIDI IN on the Alesis, those new to MIDI often get this wrong.

  • How do I play a saxophone part on a MIDI controller and have it come out at the right trasposition?

I am using Mainstage 3 with a MacBook Pro running Yosemite. When I play an alto sax line from printed sheet music on a MIDI controller keyboard, how do I make it transpose to the right pitch (down a major 6th)?

    Hi
One solution would be to select the Sax Channel Strip, click the MIDI Input Tab in the Inspector, and apply the Transpose function as required

  • Best strategy to make commits by group of 100/200 insert/update

    Hi,
I have a Java batch written in Java and i want to improve performances when writing to database.
For 6000 lines of inserts, i 'd like to group insert by 100/200 in a Unit Of Work then commit.
    - i should use the methode useBatchWriting to group the inserts
    - in my class, i declare a global variable for my UnitOfWork...before beginning the 200 iterations, i do the acquire of this Unit Of Work...after the 200 iterations, commit then release the UnitOfWork. Then reuse it (acquire..) before the next 200 iterations..etc etc.. I do not know if this a good strategy or if i should release uow once all the iterations have finished.
    Thanks for your advice
    Laurent

I applied what you suggested yesterday , but stll have problems
One UnitOfWork ..do the acquire before the first 100 inserts
    Commit
ReAcquire UnitOfWork without releasing uow object
    Next 100 inserts
    commit etc...
    Doen't work... Java freeze .
I'm working with TL 9.0.3.4 in jdk 13
So i came back on my first version : Acquire a Unit Of Work for each row, insert, commit, release...but the performances are not good at all
I'd really like to batch inserts by groups of 100/200 rows
