Best modem for DSL and WIFI

Just got my first Mac Book Pro and want to set up a WIFI connection.  Still have and will continue to use a PC that is on AT&T DSL.
Is an AT&T Wireless Router with DSL modem recommended for use with a Mac Book Pro?
Have gotten contradictory info.  Thx!

My only advice is that I would not get a gateway device (a device that includes both a modem and router). They are harder to troubleshoot problems than troubleshooting separate modem and router. And, if either component (modem or router) fails you have to replace the whole device. Whereas if your modem and router are separate, you only have to replace the one that failed.
But regardless of my opinion, any will work. Wifi is wifi whether on a Windows PC or an Apple computer.

  • Best practice for Plan and actual data

Hello, what is the best practice for Plan and actual data?  should they both be in the same app or different?
    Thanks.

    Hi Zack,
It will be easier for you to maintain the data in a single application. Every application needs to have the category dimension, mandatorily. So, you can use this dimension to maintain the actual and plan data.
    Hope this helps.

  • DNS best practices for hub and spoke AD Architecture?

I have an Active Directory Forest with a forest root such as joe.co and the root domain of the same name, and root DNS servers (Domain Controllers) dns1.joe.co and dns2.joe.co
I have child domains with names in the form region1.joe.com, region2.joe.co and so on, with dns servers dns1.region1.joe.co and so on.
Each region has distribute offices that may have a DC in them, servers named in the form dns1branch1.region1.joe.co
Over all my DNS tests out okay, but I want to get the general guidelines for setting up new DCs correct.
    Configuration:
Root DC/DNS server dns1.joe.co adapter settings points DNS to itself, then two other root domain DNS/DCs dns2.joe.co and dns3.joe.co.
The other root domain DNS/DCs adapter settings point to root server dns1.joe.co and then to itself dns2.joe.co, and then 127.0.0.1
The regional domains have a root dns server dns1.region1.joe.co with adapter that that points to root server dns1.joe.co then to itself.
The additional region domain DNS/DCs adapter settings point to dns1.region1.joe.co then to itself then to dn1.joe.co
What would you do to correct this topology (and settings) or improve it?
    Thanks in advance
    just david

    Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that you need suggestion about your DNS topology.
In theory, there is no obvious problem. Except for the namespace and server plaining for DNS, zone is also needed to consideration. If you place DNS server on each domain and subdomain, confirm that if the traffic browsed by DNS will affect the network performance.
Besides, fault tolerance and security are also necessary.
    We usually recommend that:
DC with DNS should point to another DNS server as primary and itself as secondary or tertiary. It should not point to self as primary due to various DNS islanding and performance issues that can occur. And when referencing a DNS server on itself, a DNS client
should always use a loopback address and not a real IP address. detailed information you may reference:
What is Microsoft's best practice for where and how many DNS servers exist? What about for configuring DNS client settings on DC’s and members?

Just to explain what I just wrote to Laundry Bleach:
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac?
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3673
    UPDATE & ADDENDUM:
But even though you can still buy iLife 11 that includes iDVD 7 from Amazon, Apple now make it difficult to install:
Poster jhb21939 posted this in another thread:
“when I attempted to load iDVD into a new iMac. A notice came up on the screen stating that the 'Authorisation Licence' had expired on 25 March this year (2012).
I contacted the Apple support team and eventually, I was told that the Licence had been withdrawn and could no longer be used.”
In other words Apple are now so adamant that we don’t use iDVD that they have tried to make it impossible to install.
In response, Old Toad posted this solution:
“You can still use it one all of your Macs.  If you get an invalid certificate message just set your Mac's clock to sometime before early 2011 and run the installer.  After you're done reset the time back to the correct time.” He added this comment:
“It began after iDVD and iWeb were discontued and they were dropped from the Apple Store. All I can think of is the certificate was set to expire after a certain time period after the intitial iLife disc was released.
I've been able to use the installer even without setting back the date.  I just clicked on the Continue button and it would work as expected.  For some it would not continue unless the date was set back.”
The latest anorexic iMacs just announced do not even include a CD drive! Proof positive that Apple virtually prohibit the use of DVDs - although the newly announced Mac Minis do include a Superdrive.
Yet, they still include iMovie! Heaven alone knows or understands what you are supposed to do with your newly edited masterpiece - except make a low quality version for YouTube?

  • Using Iphone for calls and Wifi only for emails and safari

I have a new iphone which is uk based and have a pay as you go card inside
what i want is for it too only use pay as you go for calls and wifi (free in my house and office!) for collecting my emails and going online -
i have set - fetch new data to off but my pay as you go card took 5uk pounds in one day.
Now if i take my sim out is works perfect - they way i want it for now but I cannot be contacted on the phone!!! opps
Please assist this novice iphone owner

One of the problems you're up against is that the iphone is designed to always have a data connection. There is no way, currently, to completely eliminate that data connection & still use the iphone as a phone. OS 4.0, when released this summer, will add the capability to completely turn that connection off, but OS 4.0 has not been released yet. When the iphone goes into sleep mode, it will disconnect from WiFi(to save battery) and connect to the cellular data network for any application that might need data. Again, a design feature that cannot be currently overridden.

  • Best place for DSL wireless router to aquire strongest signal

    Hi all
I have a Westell DSL wireless router sitting on a Kensington surge protection base with antennas pointing straight up. Is this ok? My wireless internet connection is ok for now. What's the best place for my wireless router for the strongest possible signal?
    Thanks for your help
    Web dude

Place it clear of HVAC ducting and away from any microwave or cordless phone base stations(s) in the house - these are the primary causes of wifi interference/noise and signal outages. Consider the area you want to cover (including any outdoor areas) and place the unit as near the center as possible.
Download a copy of AP Grapher and observe the signal quality in your intended reception area(s) to help place the router optimally for best signal and lowest noise, including rotating the antennas if needed - vertical is perfectly OK, but you may get marginally better signal or lower noise by rotating them.
AP Grapher can be downloaded from http://www.chimoosoft.com/products/apgrapher/

  • Best Modem for BT ADSL?

I'm trying to find the best equipment for a bad performing ADSL line (1-2mbps).
Originally it was 0.9mb download, using a D-Link 320 modem, but using a TalkTalk brand D-Link router (DSL-2780), it has jumped up to 1.6mb. I then bought a Draytek Vigor 120 modem, as I've read this is a very good modem. But again I only experience under 1mb of download. Also tried a Sky router which also gave under 1mb speeds. So it seems the equipment I use has a big influence on the speed.
Are there any settings that could explain the differences? The DrayTek is supposed to be one of (if not the) best ADSL modem (£50!), so I'm surprised it's not getting the best speeds.
I'm guessing I could try a Home Hub off eBay, but I don't see why that would work better than other brands, unless it comes preloaded with certain settings..
I've also eliminated other factors, as I'm just swapping out the modem between speed tests so that's the only thing changing.
    Thanks for any info!
(ps. I tried tech support but that was going nowhere..)

The speed goes up as well as down however. I can swap to and from the TalkTalk and it's consistently sub-1mb with other equipment, but always goes back up to 1.5-1.8 on the TalkTalk router. I've tried several times in a row with same results.
If it was a line noise issue, I would have thought the problem would carry over to the following speed tests.
Do modems do anything fancy with regards to negociating a signal?
I've read about chipset matching modems to ISPs equipment, as they (supposedly!) talk to each other to work out an optimal signal strength/setting.
Trouble is I need to work out if this DrayTek is gonna be any good fairly soon, as I need to return within 7 day cooling off if not.

  • Best Connection For WRTP54G and SA2102?

I can not find details on the best install for the subject router and router/voice adapter.  I have been having trouble with my voicemail on VOIP.com.  Periodically, I have voicemail but there is no stutter tone or message light.  I thought it maybe best to put the SA2102 in front of the wireless router but I could not get connectivity to my PC then.  Therefore, I am currently running the SA2102 after the WRTP54G.  Everything works except this periodic voicemail problem.  I have contacted Linksys and VOIP.com but got no help.  I was wondering:
    1.  What is the best install hookup configuration?
    2.  In either case, what actions (configuration settings) if any should I take (make) on my adapter or wireless router?
    Thanks in advance.
    Mike

i'm confused why you need 2 VoIP routers (SPA2102, WRTP54G) unless you just made a typo error and meant WRT54G instead
anyway, I would presume that SPA2102 is the one configured with your VoIP providers' settings.  best way to get VoIP to work properly is if the SPA is connected to the modem really...you can set the wireless router to act just as a plain access point to avoid "double NAT"...
--disconnect the wireless router from everything in your network and hardwire just one computer to port 1 of wireless router..under Setup-Advanced Routing subtab disable Firewall & NAT (don't forget to save the settings)
--go back to Basic Setup subtab and disable Local DHCP server (after saving settings it's very likely that you will lose connection to the router's web interface)
--connect an ethernet cable to the Ethernet port of SPA2102 and Port 4 of WRTP54G (nothing will be connected to the Internet port on the wireless)
-- power cycle all devices and the computer should have internet access again
** if you want to access the web interface of the wireless again you would need to set a static IP on your computer like 192.168.15.6 (assuming the LAN IP address of the router is still 192.168.15.1)
**if want easy access to the wireless router without setting static IP you can change the LAN IP address of the wireless router with an IP that is the same range as the DHCP of SPA2102

  • Best modem for comcast voice?

I'm currently leasing a tier 3 gateway device, and it's garbage! Can someone recomend the best modem (retail) that can be used with comcast voice? Also. I'm not actually using the phone line, only got it to get a lower price on the 105 mpbs speeds. Can I use any modem, or will comcast still restrict me to a telephony modem?

Right now the only modem/gateway listed as retail approved for use with voice with Comcast is the Arris TM862G. Does not have great reviews, what with limited wireless range and limited firmware. If I had to get one, I would bridge it and use a good router with it. Good question about not using the voice side, I have read about people just buying a straight cable modem, not sure if you would run into problems getting it activated and even if you did, you could run into account problems down the road.
