Best multifunction for use with Airport extreme/express??

Thanks to all who can help me pick a reliable multifunction printer with fax to use for my home/business. I will wire it to the Airport Express and share it with my family thru my Airport Extreme Main base station upstairs. I am will to spend extra for features and reliablity.

No multi-function printer will work (except possibly printing only) when connected to the USB port of the Airport Express.
If you need to share a multi-function device ensure that you get one which already has it's own networkable wireless print server and is Mac compatible.

  • Modem for use with airport extreme?

I know that the AirPort Time Capsules do not have a built in modem and I need an external one.
I also have ADSL internet as opposed to Fibre so I need to find something suitable to sit between the Time Capsule and the interent. I realise that I could simply use the modem / router supplied by my ISP and switch off the wi-fi on that and just use the modem aspects, but this uses an additiional power source.
My question is: Is there a suitable modem that will sit between the AirPort Time Capsule and an ADSL internet connection that does not need and additional power source?
If not (and I suspect there isn't as I can't find one), then is there any benefit in having a independent modem only device over using the ISP supplied modem / router and switching the router aspects off?
Thanks for any advice as I am having a real nightmare setting up my third party modem / router to work with an Apple network with some additional non-Apple devices and feel that going down the all Apple route of an AirPort would just make my life so much simple...

    PPPOA is the big issue..
You cannot bridge to a modem running that authentication. There is no client that will work so the Apple has to be in bridge.. or some dicey double NAT setup.
The Thomson/Technicolor offers a dhcp spoofing but it goes through the NAT and it also causes heaps of issues.. Thomson modem routers have the worst possible NAT called full cone. You must manually bind all UDP ports to the NAT to get access.. and even that is not workable for many functions.
So you are quite right.. it is a mess.
Hence my thought to switch to an Apple router as it automatically opens relevant ports and recognises Apple devices. I have no idea (at this stage) how to set up a router / modem or bridge or other device to sit between the Apple AirPort Time Capsule and the ADSL internet connection.
Using the Apple router to open ports, is not going to help.. because you cannot bridge the modem.
So where do you end up.
The reason I am struggling with my Asus DSL-55n modem is that it is just too complex for me to get to grips with and there is little in the way of support documentation from Asus to assist me is overcoming the specific difficulties I have been having.
    What issues are they?
I do not particularly like Asus modems.. they are generally poor firmware.. but have you loaded in the latest firmware.. check for updates because they have been improving.
A solution might be the Draytek 120 modem.. it has a neat little trick where you do PPPoE to PPPoA on the modem.. there are a few that can do it but the only readily available now that I know of is the draytek.
There is a mode in the Thomson called PPTP to PPPoA relay.. this also works very well but Apple do not support these more esoteric connections.. it is better used on a third party router.
If it makes any difference at all, my ISP allocates me a static external IP address which I have paid for and is automatically pushed to whatever router I seem to use.
It is only significant if the authentication method is IPOA .. where you use the IP as static on the router and have no authentication.. but static IP for PPPOA simply means your public IP doesn't change.. useful and helpful but not a solution to this problem.

Look at the setup for pppoa bridge.

  • Switching to AT&T Cingular - best phone for use with Mac and iSync

    Dear Friends,
I am finally about to be free from Sprint's poor customer service. I will be switching to AT&T / Cingular. (Not quite ready to buy an iPhone, but don't want to be locked into a 2 year contract with another provider).
I want to use Apple's iSync. I have reviewed the list of compatible devices and scanned the forums for related topics.
    I'm still left wondering:
What is the best phone to get with AT&T for use with iSync?
I would like to sync contacts both ways. If possible, syncing cal events and to-dos would be nice, but not as important as contacts.
I prefer small flip phones. I don't plan to buy the Media pack service that includes text, web, etc. Instead, I will use the phone for calls and occassional text messages.
Sound quality and the ease of use are the most important features for me. I prefer raised keys to the flat keypads, but could give on this if need be.
Finally, using the phone as a modem with my laptop would be nice, but is not essential.
Thanks so much for any help you can offer.
    David

I am facing the exact same question regarding, e.g., the Nokia 6126. There are several references:
    1. Go to the Nova Media web site and look at their new product, Fone Link. Or their iSynch Plugins
    2. One of the forum threads references, http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20060915154526806
    3. Another link I found http://soapbox.co.nz/past/2007/4/9/nokia-6126-and-isync-revisited/
But what I don't yet understand is whether or not any of these suggestions/solutions are affected by the carrier. My understanding is that the 6126 is the North America Version of the 6131. But I talked to ATT/Cingular support yesterday and they make some modifications to the phone software. They don't know if the ATT 6126 will synch with a Mac. Of course they know the answer if synching with a PC (!!)

  • HT5022 How do I change my "password" for using an Airport Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi base station?

My Kindle Fire asked for a password for my Airport Extreme 802.11 Wi-Fi. The password used on other devices using the Airport Extreme does not seem to work and Apple Support is not willing to help unless a service charge is made. How do I change my password or find out what the password is?

I am assuming that you are referring to the AirPort's wireless security password and not its base station Administrator's password ... correct?
If so, there are number of methods of resetting a password if you don't remember what it is. Please check out the following AirPort User Tip for additional details.

  • What's the best ADSL modem to use with Airport Extreme?

My current set up includes an 802.11n Airport Extreme (that I use in conjunction with my Apple TV and MacBook) connected to my Netgear DG834G wireless router (wifi is switched off). The Netgear router is connected by ethernet to 2 Macs, a Skype phone, and my laser printer.
I want to upgrade my LAN to gigabit, and I'm not sure whether I would be better to use a Gigabit switch instead of connecting everything via the router, or whether I should buy a new router which supports gigabit?
Also, I've just been reading about the DrayTek Vigor 100 ADSL2+ Ethernet Modem, and it suggests that it's better to have a separate modem rather than a router. All I know is that in the early days of broadband the USB modems connected to one computer were very unreliable, and that a router was far better.
What is the best way to configure such options? When I first got my new Airport Extreme I found that both it and the router were 'competing' with each other. Is there anywhere to turn to so I can get a better understanding of how to configure these things.
PS. I know my Airport Extreme doesn't have gigabit - but I've just ordered the newer version that does.

I use the Linksys ADSL2MUE - which I managed to buy for £12.
I configured it in bridged mode - leaving the Apple Extreme do all the firewall and DHCP stuff.
It's not pretty but does the job.

  • Recommendations for Comcast-approved modem to be used with AirPort Extreme?

Any recommendations for modems that work well with Comcast and AirPort Extreme? If there are ones that work well or ones to avoid, I'd like to know.
Here's Comcast's list of approved modems:

The motorola sb6120 is what I used with great success. It's a docsis 3.0 modem so it's capable of the latest high speeds that comcast can offer. Good luck!

  • Issues with Airport Extreme/Express/PS3 network

I have searched and searched and cannot find the answer to my problem. In my house I have an Airport Extreme, a Linksys switch, and an Airport Express all creating my wireless/ethernet network in the house. Since day one, my PS3 joined our network and I have been able to get online, no problems. Recently though I have decided to attempt to get the horribly difficult NAT type 2 with no success.
Right not I have the Extreme acting as the WDS main and the Express (which delivers perfect connection to the PS3) acting as a WDS remote in Bridge mode. The Extreme is sharing a public IP and I have a DHCP reservation for my PS3 (using the default 10.0.1.253 IP) along with all the PS3 necessary ports forwarded. I have also set up the Extreme to set my PS3 as the default NAT host.
My problem is that I get a "Conflicting DHCP Range" error. I also get a lot of warning messages every now and then saying "10.0.1.x is already in use by *MAC address* 10.0.1.1". I still can get on the internet with my computers and PS3 but I have noticed that signing onto PS network works very rarely.
I absolutely cannot make sense of this. I also don't have my NAT 2 so can anyone help me.

Is the PS3 connected to the express over WiFi or plugged into the ethernet port on the express or both?
You should not need forward ports and set the default NAT host. Just setting the default NAT host will forward all traffic that is not sent to another host to the PS3. I would recommend forwarding ports instead of using default host for security reasons.
You could also try setting static IP info in the PS3.

  • Best configuration for Time Capsule & Airport Extreme running one wireless network?

We just moved to a house that does not have Ethernet pre-wired so I've had to re-setup the wireless network in a different configuration and it seems we're experiencing deteriorated wireless signal for devices like laptops.  It will work perfectly fine (and fast! wheee!!!) but then it will slow to a crawl and mostly timeout.  before I reset everything and start from scratch, I'd like some help.  As an FYI, when connected via Ethernet to either of these, Internet is blazingly fast… so my problem here is the Wireless portion.
As some background, here is how we had the network set up in the previous house which was working great (although it was wired for Ethernet which made things A LOT easier):
    Airport Extreme (4th Generation)
Wireless Mode: Create a Wireless Network
Internet Facing (Connected to the Cable Modem)
Location: Upstairs Utility Closet (with Smartbox and cable modem)
    Time Capsule (1st Generation)
Wireless Mode: Extend a Wireless Network
Joined to existing network above, but also connected to the Ethernet jack
    Location: Upstairs Office
Here is the current set up we have running:
    Time Capsule (1st Generation)
Wireless Mode: Create a Wireless Network
Internet Facing (Connected to the Cable Modem)
    Radio Mode: 802.11n (b/g compatible)
    Location: Upstairs Office
    Airport Extreme (4th Generation)
Wireless Mode: Extend a Wireless Network
Joined to existing network above with NO incoming Ethernet connection
    Location: Downstairs Family Room
My understanding is that the Airport Extreme should pick up and relay the signal downstairs, as well as provide the router for the devices downstairs that need Ethernet (TiVo, Apple TV, etc).
So, my question is (and thank you in advance for helping me sort this out!), what would be the best configuration to optimize the Wireless performance in the house?
Also, for whichever device is the one picking up the existing network and providing the router capabilities for the Tivo and such, is it possible for it to pick up but not rebroadcast the signal?  I think in this new house we may have a good enough signal from the office, without the need to rebroadcast it.  My theory is that in this house, they are too close together and interfere with each other and/or devices aren't sure which to choose so they bounce back and forth endlessly.  Again, just a theory.
Many thanks again for your help! If I've left out any information, please ask and I can provide.

Should they be running on the same channel (as with the "Extend" option previously? Or just both on Automatic channels?
I would recommend the Automatic setting on both devices because this will allow each router to scan and choose an open channel automatically. If  you want to set the channels manually, keep them separated by at least 4-5 channels. You would not want to ever use the same channel for both devices in this type of "roaming" setup.
Is there a way to limit bandwidth per device (or action) so that it doesn't monopolize the network and keep other devices from using it?
Nothing that I am aware of. It sounds like  you have some young users who are likely visiting Bit Torrent sites, which will really gobble up the bandwidth with big, heavy downloads. The Time Machine has to back up the same files again when it makes the next pass, so that clogs things up again.
Backups would go 3-5 times faster, on average, if the computer(s) could connect using Ethernet, but I understand that wires are not cool with the younger crowd.
should BOTH the TC and AE be set up in Bridge mode?
The AirPort Extreme should be set up in Bridge Mode.
The Time Capsule...it depends. If the TC is connected to a simple cable modem...then the correct setting for Connection Sharing would be "Share a public IP address" on the TC. That is because a simple modem has only 1 IP address to deliver. The TC takes that address and "shares" it with other devices by setting up a local network for all your other devices.
If the TC is connected to a gateway....a combination modem/router in the same box that usually has 3-4 Ethernet ports on the device....then that device would be considered the main router on the network and the TC would be  configured in Bridge Mode in that case to function correctly on the network.

  • Ongoing wireless issues with Airport Extreme + Express

We have 5 macs in our household. 2 laptops, a desktop, a Macbook Air and a Macbook pro. We have dsl and had a Linksys router. All of us were able to use the internet fine: Airport bar always showed full bars (we did have some slowed response when everyone was on at once but it never posed a major inconvenience). However, the Macbook air had problems from the beginning: dropped connections, choppy video with stalls, buffering taking forever. The Air is the newest of all the computers purchased in April. I went to the Mac store and they suggested purchasing the Airport Extreme AND the Express to ramp up everything both in terms of signal strength and range. Installation was fairly easy and I added the Express to the Extreme network. Now even when standing next to the Extreme base station I get only 2 bars (the little dot at the bottom and one bar above it). I notice no increase in speed. There is worse reception on the Macbook Air belonging to my daughter...she has given up on videos and uses her sisters' laptops to download music to her her iPod. I have cleared caches, updated all computers, reset the modem and router, reset the dhcp lease...nothing works. How is it I had better connection with a NON Mac product?(Prior to buying the new Airports I purchased a Ralink network adapter for my daughter and myself and we had better performance with that ...at $17).As all Mac computers are experiencing the same low performance except for the Macbook Air as noted above it cannot be a hardware issue. Is there something else to be done with theAirports? Please advise.

    1. Try switching to a different channel.
    2. Try System Preferences>Network>Advanced>DNS
Click on the + and insert:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    click OK, then click Apply.
You can do that on each Mac.

  • Recommended Modem to use with Airport Extreme

I currently have AT&T DSL. It is connected to AT&T's really crummy 2Wire 2701HG-B modem/router combo. I want to ditch the 2Wire and replace it with the Airport Extreme router, but I am told that I will also have to buy a modem to hook up to the router.
Any recommendations on a good modem that is compatable with AT&T DSL, and plays nice with the Airport extreme?

Best to check first with ATT for modems that are compatible with their service and will be supported in the event of connection difficulties.
    http://www.att.com/equipment/
It looks like the Motorola 3360 might do what you need.
I have the previous version model....a Motorola 2210.....that has worked just fine for 4+ years with my AirPort Extreme.

  • Extend Network with Airport Extreme & Express

I am trying to extend the range of a wireless network from one house to another about 80 yards away. I have an Airport Extreme Base Station (ABES) and an Airport Express (AX) which is supposed to accomplish this. I found some instructions in the forums that walked me through configuring WDS. That was easy enough, however, when the AX restarts it doesn't come back up in the Airport Utility. It will come up if I do a hard reset on the AX. The ABES continues to show a WDS error and displays a flashing amber light.
What am I doing wrong? How do I fix this issue?

Karen,,, sorry for the interruption. I have the same issue..... AP Extreme Flying Saucer, AP Express "b", and a new AP Express "n" and would like to stop all the drop outs with my music. So, I'll ask Bob for some help.... I think I already know the answer.....
Bob,,,,, Here is my schematic layout.... Everything is "as the crow flies" and in the same height placement. iMac in bedroom, 1st Stereo in Living room approx 25 feet away, 2nd Stereo in a detach Shop approx 85 feet from the iMac. There is a concrete block wall between the computer and the first stereo and the same block wall along with two big glass windows between the computer and the shop stereo. Again all are in a straight line from the computer.
The new AP Express "n" is in the shop which is the greatest distance. If the wind is blowing hard I have lots of drop outs in both stereo's..... And during other nice weather times everything works excellent.
How can I extend the wireless signal??? I'll buy all "n" stuff if you think it'll do the trick....? I can't raise the Dr. Bott antenna due to cord length.... Oh,, my internet modem is plugged into the iMac not the AP Extreme...
    Any suggestions....?

  • Hard Drive for Time Machine for iMac with AirPort Extreme??

I just switched back to Mac after too many years with a PC. I bought an iMac 24" 2.8GHz with 4GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM and 750GB Serial ATA Drive.
I'm planning on adding an external hard drive for Time Machine to attach to my AirPort Extreme. From reading information posted on the Apple site and my AEBS I understand that it needs to be connected to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme.
While I may be opening up a technological "can of worms," I'd like to know what will be the most dependable drive 1TB, USB 2.0 that I can buy. Noise and bright lights are not a consideration here. I just want a drive that I can depend on to work with Time Machine. The "original" data will be stored elsewhere. I've heard of, read about and experienced so many hard drive failures that I'm getting "gun shy" about this subject. Please feel free to let me know what's good and bad. Thanks.

Here is a quote right from Apple's site today:
    Quote:
AirPort Extreme lets you turn your external USB hard drive into a drive you can share with all the >users on your network. It’s called AirPort Disk, and it’s a simple and convenient way to share files >among everyone in your family, office, or class.
I tried to return my AEBS to Apple but I was a few days beyond their 14 day limit on returns (limit is bases on shipping date of the item in question, not when all parts of the shipment are received). Part of my reasoning with the Apple Store CS was the posts like yours saying that this couldn't be done. The Apple Store rep. and the tech. rep. that he claims that he spoke to said it could be done. The only way I could return the AEBS, according to the Apple Store CS rep., and get a new Time Capsule would be if I bought a hard drive and discovered that my AEBS would not work with the hard drive. No, I'm not a happy new customer. So, I want to buy a good, reliable hard drive and want to know which one to get.

You should convert the media to QuickTime. Without knowing any specifics most likely the simplest way is to use MPEG Streamclip.

  • How to setup a printer with Airport Extreme + Express Network

Ok so here's how things are setup. I have an Extreme connected to my cable modem creating the wireless network. I have a PC that doesn't have a wireless card, so I setup an Express next to it. The Express takes in the wireless signal, and the PC is connected to the Express through ethernet and has a successful connection. Next I want to connect my printer to the USB port of the Express and share it over the network. It doesn't work plug and play. From the Airport utility, the express recognizes the printer, however, the computers on the network do not see it. Can this be set up to work? If so, what am I missing?
