Best operating system?

My mum has an eMac
What is the recommended OS for this Mac?
Right now she has Tiger but it's running incredibly slow and I'm going to re-nitialise the HD and re install the OS
Should I stick with Tiger or try Loeopard or SN?
She only uses it for email !

If System Profiler (Apple Menu > "About this Mac..." then click "More info...") shows the machine model as PowerMac6,4 the eMac will handle 2GB RAM. We have the last eMac from 2005 with a 1.42Ghz processor and it is running a full 2G of RAM. However, you have to get it from a place that recognizes that the 6,4 eMacs can handle more RAM. Crucial does not. I got our RAM from Other World Computing:
1GB PC2700 DDR 333MHz CAS 2.5 184 Pin DIMM
and it works perfectly.
Our eMac also runs OS 10.5 Leopard fine. The secret is the 1.42Ghz models have video hardware that fully supports one of 10.5's key graphics technology. If you have the 1.25Ghz model, it may struggle with 10.5 even if you max out the RAM. If that's the case, stick with Tiger until she needs a newer Mac.
The earlier eMacs have the machine model code PowerMac4,4. These can only manage 1GB RAM and the older processors and slower system buses in these are not very capable any more. There is not much you can do to improve it if it's a 4,4 eMac.
So I think we can't go much farther with recommendations without knowing the details of your mum's eMac. That System Profiler page that has the model code will give us all the info we need. Looks like this:

The sample is from a newer Intel Mac but the format is the same in OS 10.4.

Best operating system with which ipad 3 and ipad 2 sync and work better.

I have leopard 10.5.8. I need to know, if i bought ipad3 , which operating system will be best for troublefree sync and work.
Is there any security reasons related to leopard to ipad3 as slow speed , error in file transfer etc.
Please also recommend for ipad2. My choice is to go for snow but not lion as it requires magic trackpad and ram upgrade etc.
If lion is best then i can go for it.

You can run the latest version of iTunes with Leopard 10.5.8 and that's all that should really matter to be honest. If you want to upgrade to Snow Leopard it's never a bad idea and it's pretty cheap on Amazon.
Extras like Wi-Fi Sync and iCloud are completely optional and may be convenient but not extremely critical in the long run unless you like those conveniences and they suit your needs.

Best operating system for music applications( or most popular)

hi, gonna be buying a mac laptop.
im not feeling leopard for coupla reasons.
im new to all this by the way. so dont know about the diff versions of operating systems for mac........i just know tiger 10.4 was one prior.
for music software, which op system and version is most compatible with the various music apps and vst companies etc out there. like i dont mind not using the latest versions of popular programmes like pro tools and logic and ableton.
leopared is very specific and not backwards compatiblewith alot of software it seems.

What FUD. Seriously. Plenty of people on this board are running leopard with no problem. My leopard is solid, and it runs logic and reason.
Leopard worked fine on my G5.
As for the comment about leopard not being able to run tiger....well, that's kinda mind blowing.

Apple products always come with the latest. Just set up yopur system, and the run software updates to get any late changes from Apple. iLife 2011 is also included with your MBA. If the question you are actually asking has to do with other software versus OS, that is a much bigger question, and would be dependent on what you intend to do with the system.
On January 6th, the Mac App Store will go live, and make it very easy to find and load software.

Just so you know, a Mac with an Intel processor is not a G-series Mac (i.e., yours isn't a G5).
"Best" depends upon what you need, though if you only have a Core Duo processor and not a Core 2 Duo you are limited to OSX 10.4.11-10.6.8. With your ocmputer I would grab a copy of Snow Leopard (10.6) before they really are all gone.

Alternatively you can buy from online retailers but expect to pay much more than the original price which is the price still charged by Apple

Developer looks better in Windows, and there are a few things in *NIX that don't work quite as well. Plus, you can still run the OC4J server to test forms in DS instead of having to run them in AS.

Which operating system is best for computer control using LabVIEW

I am using LabVIEW 7.1 and want to write a program to control a system of pumps, heaters, and compressors. I am wondering if using Windows XP is a bad thing, given how many background processes computers tend to use these days. I don't want my computer to slow down for intermittant checking for updates, or any other sort of routine maintenance computers are set up to do. I have heard mixed things about windows reliability and computer control, most of which is people saying windows could crash and completely ruin my tests. Does anyone have any advice on the best operating system to use for continuous computer control of my system?

If you plan on using a desktop PC for control type applications, then your best option in terms of performance will be with a Real-Time operating system. Windows is not deterministic for many reasons. Determinism involves the ability to respond to an event within a specified amount of time with an acceptable amount of error (jitter). First of all, Windows is not deterministic because it has to service mouse and keyboard events, as well as anti-virus software, automatic updates, etc.
You can, however, convert an existing desktop PC to a Real-Time target with a Real-Time OS and use it for your control type application with the deterministic behavior of PXI, Compact FieldPoint, and other Real-Time targets. Check out this link for more information.
On a side note to a previous reply, using the LabVIEW Real-Time module on Windows XP won't make your application deterministic. Your best bet, as others have noted, is to use the LabVIEW RT Module on an RT OS with good RT programming practices (avoiding memory allocations, etc.).

Emacs as an operating system?

Currently using Awesome WM and it works pretty well for what I need. However, I have read several posts where people say, "Emacs is the best operating system!" Now having very little knowledge about Emacs it is difficult to tell if they are speaking literally or figuratively. So my question is can Emacs serve as a window manager/operation system or is it merely a highly configurable text editor that runs within a window?

"shell" is not the only terminal you have. There are also "eshell" and "term" ("ansi-term"). All three have their advantages and disadvantages.
And you can run emacs or vim inside emacs using "M-x term".

for reading mail and news (with Gnus),
for chat (there are several IRC clients for emacs),
for listening to music including online radio (with EMMS as a frontend and mplayer as a backend; you can also watch videos like that),
for configuring programming WM i use (StumpWM) on the fly (with SLIME),
for working with files (using dired and Surnise Commander),
as a super-inteface for git (Magit),
for Org mode,
even for reading web-pages when i'm only interested in content and not fancy appearance (with w3m; there is also eww),
for having fun by using elisp for extending emacs for my needs,
and for working with text in any kind.
And i think i didn't mention many things i use and a lot of things i don't use.

How do I update my old MacBook to the newest operating system, but want to clean it out thoroughly first (without losing my data). How should I best go about doing this?

I want to buy the newest operating system so that it runs better (because currently it is struggling), however I would like to clean up all the old software before I do that. I want it to be as clean and new as possible before I buy the new operating system, instead of just downloading it ontop of all of the rubbish I must have accumulated. I also want to keep my data (documents, photographs etc). Would anybody be kind enough to provide me with a step-by-step (can be as concise as you like, depending on how much time/effort you have to explain!) guide as to how I might go about doing this myself? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank so much guys.

Step number one - Back up all your important data!
Seriously, it sounds like you are working without backups. Don't ever do this. Hard drives fail, it is a fact of life. Don't be one of those who get caught without a backup. An external hard drive, burning it all to DVDs, or online backup will save you frustration and money.
Two - don't expect a new operating system to improve performance. Get the computer running as best as it can before you upgrade. You may need more RAM or a bigger hard drive.

I cannot get itunes to work/install on myPC. I am running windows 8 in a 64 bit machine. I also want to purchase books via itunes for my Nook. Are you deliberately excluding PC owners so we cannot use ituens on our computers???? I have selected a community but have no idea what community I should be working with. Can somone explai these communities to me? Also. you don't allow much time to go thru the sign up process. I had to start over SEVERAL times as you kept timing me out. Jesus...when people are signing up for the first time, we have no idea of the questions that will be asked. Give us a break and give us time to sign up. Not everone is disability free and able to go thru your process quickly...you are NOT user friendly. You should be for people who are wanting to join your community. A virtual machine software package is a hunk of software that presents itself as computing hardware to the guest operating system software. The operating system software running as a guest within the virtual machine reads and writes memory and devices as it would do normally (when booted on physical hardware), and the virtual machine detects and translates these accesses and (hopefully) provides the responses expected by the guest operating system. For input and output to the user or to storage or network devices, the virtual machine can be coded to potentially pass through the read and write access to real hardware and real hardware I/O registers, or the virtual machine might be coded to simulate hardware; what are called virtual devices.
This virtual machinary as differentiated from dual- or triple-booting via separate disks, or via Apple's shared-partition Boot Camp software. In these cases, the operating system is booting directly on the hardware involved. Shut down and reboot to swap operating systems.
The Whonix distribution specifically targets privacy, and I'm not sure I'd want to run that as a guest, as the virtual machine or the host operating system that the virtual machine is running on probably doesn't have the same focus, and (if you're truely paranoid) might well report the presence of at least the virtual machine via (even entirely innocent) bug reports or crashes or such. This configuration might work as might dual-booting into Whonix via Boot Camp, though whether these configurations might leak information would have to be verified.
It'd probably be best to check with the Whonix folks directly around what they recommend, what's been tested, and what to look out for. In cases such as this one, having, knowing, operating and maintaining the configuration properly is key, and that discussion is far beyond what's usual here in the Apple forums.
