Best OS I can upgrade to on my Powerbook G4 PowerPC running 10.3.9?

I have two of these Macs, and am increasingly shut out of the ability to use new software, and so would like to get them as "advanced" as possible. Both are G4 laptops (1GHz PowerPC G4, 512 MB DDR SDRAM, currently running 10.3.9). I'd like to be able to sync with my iPhone etc.
And is this an upgrade I can do myself without too much fuss, or am I better off going to an Apple Store to get this done?
Thanks in advance!
Michael

Hope no one minds if I jack this thread and ask some questions of my own.
I am also contemplating an upgrade from 10.3.9. My OS runs great and I've got all the programs I want, and everything is running fine. Only thing I want to upgrade for is to have better streaming of online video and syncing with my ipod (two things us 10.3 users are left in the dust on).
I'm currently running a powerbook G4 with 1.5ghz and 768mb DDR SDRAM.
My priorities are being able to keep my design programs, such as MS Office 2004, Photoshop 7.0 and Dreamweaver MX version 6, and also carrying over all my itunes information like playlists, library, etc.
Is OSX 10.5 compatible with these? I read someone recommend 1000mb of RAM, and I will assume that my old photoshop is probably not compatible. Would 10.4 be an easier upgrade?
Is this upgrade invasive? Rather, is it like doing a clean sweep of my hard drive and losing everyhing? Will I have to manually re-enter all my itunes playlists, etc.?
thanks for the advice!

Advance warning - Mail worked fine.
I had fits with the last link I posted. At first it worked fine, then all of a sudden, it quit working. I now have iCloud - iCal syncing, but iCal is read only. Not a real big deal since you can log onto iCloud using Safari and post a new event.
I finally gave up on Address Book because it kept creating multiple contacts, which if you tried to merge or delete the multiple contacts, the contacts were deleted. It also worked at first and then stopped working as it should.

Based on the information that you have supplied, you have a Early or Late 2008 MBP.  Maximum RAM that it will accept is 6 GB with the following specifications:   200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM.
The best sources for Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.

  • Best practice for R12 upgrade middle of the period

Does anyone know of where I can find an Oracle documented best practice on when to perform the 12.1.1 upgrade? We are considering if we can upgrade in the middle of a period or if we should wait until the period close.

Best practice is to read the name of a forum before you post into it.

Customers can still purchase Snow Leopard from Apple's online store's telesales agents.[1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753) or Customer Service and Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775.]
Once you have upgraded to Snow Leopard you will need to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. You can then access the App Store where you can purchase and download Mountain Lion.

  • HT4623 How I can upgrade my iPad (iOS 3.2.2) to iOS 4.0.0 or later ?

How I can upgrade my iPad (iOS 3.2.2) to iOS 4.0.0 or later ?
I'm from Indonesia. I have my iPad (the first version) from 2 years ago. Now I have a trouble to download some apps in App Store just because of the requirements doesn't support for my iPad. Nowadays most of apps are need iOS 4.0.0 or iOS 5.0.0. Please help me to upgrade my iPad (iOS 3.2.2) to iOS 4.0.0 or later ??? I have no idea. Thank you.

You can only update to the current version (i.e. 5.1.1) as that is the only version that is 'signed' by Apple.
You will need the latest version of iTunes on your computer - you can check if you are up-to-date via, on a PC, 'Help > Check For Updates'.
When you have that installed, connect the iPad to your computer and on your computer's iTunes copy any purchases off the iPad via File > Transfer Purchases (you may also want to copy photos off the iPad as well) and then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'. You may also want to copy off the iPad any important documents, notes, files etc e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case.
You can then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button.

  • How to pay ETF so I can upgrade?  Weird question!

I have an iPhone 4s.  Upgrade date is August 2014.  Called CS today and my ETF is 220.00.
I'm thinking about doing this....pay the ETF of 220....then buy for example an iPhone 5C for 99.00 since I would be able to start a new 2 yr contract....and keep my existing number?
And the rep in store has told me that VZW will pay 200.00 for my iPhone 4s used.
So I'm thinking of a cost of about 120.00 plus any upgrade fees, taxes etc.  Is this do-able?  Anyone have any experience with this?

  • Trying to find if can upgrade RAM on early 2009 iMac 2.66. Has 4GB. Says has 2 slots each accepts 1067 MHz DDR3 module

I have an early 2009 24-inch iMac (2.66 intel core 2 duo) with 4GB memory and am trying to establish if I can upgrade the memory, hopefully to improve performance and prevent regular/occasional slowdown/sticking. Spec tells me I have 2 memory slots, each of which accepts a 1067MHz DDR3 memory module. It says all are currently in use and shows 2GB in each. So, question is can I upgrade or is this the max it can take? I'd like to upgrade, say, to 8GB, 4GB in each slot, if they have the capacity for that, which isn't clear.
Also wondering if this will improve performance - i.e. prevent occasional but sometimes regular sticking/slowing of performance, spinning wheel, etc. Activity monitor often shows just single or three-figure MB 'free' - mostly as a result of having multiple web pages open (have 8 saved tabs regularly open). That said, all my problems started some time ago when I 'upgraded' to Lion. But general view seems to be that memory is best bet for such problems.
If I can upgrade, am I right to understand that Mac memory is way overpriced and that it's OK/safe to use third-party memory and that a total non-expert can install that?
    Any help appreciated.
    geoff

Each slot can accommodate up to a 4GB module; upgrading both slots will max out your RAM at 8GB.
How much performance boost you see depends on many variables, one of which being your version of the Mac OS, which we don't know at this time. My experience is that, for the average user (word processing, web browsing, e-mail), 4GB RAM is fine up to Mac OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion. Please tell us what OS you have and how you use the computer (task-wise) and we can better suggest if an upgrade will help.
Install RAM in an iMac is an easy, 10-minute and at-home job. Video instructions here:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/imac_mid_2007_mem/
RAM is expensive if you get it from Apple. Fortunately for you, they only sell extra RAM for the latest models. For over a decade I have bought RAM from one vendor online and never had an issue. I find their Mac RAM roughly equal in price to RAM for the "Dark Side" computers. I am supporting about 25 Macs between family and friends, so have some credibility as an advanced user.
If you give us a rough idea of where you are located, we can suggest reliable vendors of Mac- compatible RAM.

  • Wondering if i can upgrade help plz!

Well i was wondering if i can upgrade my graphics card i have a Compaq - Presario Laptop with AMD Athlon™ X2 QL-60 Dual-Core Processor  or http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9027698&type=product&id=1218010578770   i know some laptops u cant upgrade so i was wondering if mine cant or ill just have to by ram

That would depend on your Operating System. If you have a 32 bit OS, then you're limited to about 3.2GB of addressable(useable) RAM. So putting 4 in would be a waste of money.
If you like my post, or solution to your issue/question, go ahead and click on the little star by my name and/or accept the post as the Solution. It makes me happy.
I'm NOT an employee of Best Buy, or Geek Squad, though I did work as an Agent for a year 5 years ago. None of my posts are to be taken as the official stance that Best Buy will take on your situation. My advice is just that, advice.
Unfortunately, that's the bad luck of any electronic, there's going to be bad Apples... wait that's a horrible pun.

I want to buy a new mac.  Would a 21.5 inch Imac run Aperture 3 with 4GB or ram until I can upgrade to 8GB?  And would the stock 512mb video card be fine.

davidfromdartmouth wrote:Would a 21.5 inch Imac run Aperture 3 with 4GB or ram until I can upgrade to 8GB?
Specifically, after you buy a Mac test for RAM needs by calculating page outs as described below. The good news is that RAM is cheap enough that every Aperture user who can should upgrade to at least 8 GB RAM.
And would the stock 512mb video card be fine.
All 2011 Macs will "run" Aperture, but lesser CPUs and/or lesser GPUs will provide lesser performance. What "fine" is depends on your workflow and how demanding you are. There are some folks here happy with the power of the box you suggest.
    GENERIC UPGRADE ADVICE
Apologies in advance to those for whom this info is redundant.
Some general guidelines for operation of heavy graphics applications (specifically Aperture):
    • Only the strongest Macs will provide the strongest operation. Owners of weaker boxes (CPU, GPU, i/o, RAM) or older boxes will experience lesser performance.
    • There is a huge difference in hardware needs among workflows. A heavy pro workflow will only work best on a top well-equipped modern box.
    • As RAM prices continually fall RAM needs will continually grow. This has been true since the beginning of computing.
OS X has enabled Photoshop, for instance, to take advantage of at least 32 GB RAM for many years even though 32-bit operation limited direct RAM access to ~3 GB RAM.
    • All computers/OSs/workflows are different. Each individual user needs to carefully evaluate (meaning see what the early adopters report) workflow and hardware operation BEFORE upgrading any application or OS.
    • Hardware upgrades should be planned for always-increasing future OS/application demands, not just for today. After all, a computer purchased today is used for the next 3 years, not last year.
    • SSDs rock.  All users, all apps will benefit from using a solid state drive as the boot/apps drive. Strongly recommended. RAM-challenged setups will additionally benefit from 10x faster page outs.
    • All users should regularly evaluate their workflows by checking the Page Outs number under System Memory on the Activity Monitor app before starting a work session; then rechecking after working. If the page outs number increased significantly during operation the workflow is RAM-starved and steps should be taken, such as increasing RAM or restarting and running only one app at a time - - or switching from 64-bit operation to 32-bit operation. [Note: this is a manual calculation of any change in page outs. Ignore the cute pie charts, page ins, etc.]

what do i need to connect my mac book pro to the tv with the mac's thunderbolt port to hdmi? I have the newest macbook pro. I'm wanting to have the best picture I can get from my 1080p tv. thanks

Thanks Community! I solved the problem. In fact it was not a problem but lack of understanding. These guys at Apple are way ahead in thir thinking. I will try to explain as short as I can.
In Lion, ihe Prefferences/Display show only two choices: 6-7 steps of resolution and some color tab. No two screens, no two display to overlap, nothing for us to do. "That was the problem"! Everything is automatic.
When I connected the HDMI cable to the Miniport into a T-bolt slot, the TV screen showed the "spiral galaxy" how Zyriab is calling it. In fact he gave me the best clue. That shows the connection is good. But where is the Mac Book image?
You have to drag it to the right out of the Mac Book display area, and "voila!" it will continue on the TV screen. The same with the mouse pointer, push it out ofthe Mac Book display area and you see it on the TV sreen. Good image, you can keep the max resolution, etc. The sound is still on the Book's speakers. I have to figure that out.
Thank everybody, especialy Zyriab, ne was the closest.
    High regards to everybody

  • Transferring apps from Iphone 3Gs to PC so i can upgrade

I have tried everything i can find to transfer my apps from my iphone 3GS to itunes on my PC so i can upgrade the phone but nothing works..Right click on phone on left side of screen, click transfer purchases and it only transfers 1 app which was a free app....I have synced the phone/ back up a couple times in the past couple weeks but it takes 4-6 hours to complete and still only shows 1 app in my itunes library...I dont have that much on the phone..150 apps....50-60 pictures and address book...does it always take this long ? Help.....Jay

Just FYI, when I did this, I had to manually select all the Apps to reinstall after restoring the iPhone4 with my iPhone 3GS backup. Most of the data for those apps transferred over with possibly one exception - a game (Nanosaur 2) in which my save games all disappeared.
I guess what I'm curious to know is, when you restore from a backup, shouldn't the Apps automatically restore and be in their previous positions? I had to go back and manually rearrange all my Apps which took quite a bit of time.

  • Should I leave Verizon with one month left on my contract so I can upgrade? The ETF seems worth it considering the bad customer service I received and how long I've been with Verizon.

I've been with Verizon for a really long time and one of the best things about their upgrades was that they used to allow you to do it a little early.  And since you dont really keep up with plan changes until a new phone comes out or you are closer to your upgrade eligibility date, I didnt realize that they changed this.  My phone is on its last leg.  2 years is a long time for a device that you use every day, 50 times a day.  My upgrade date is a month away and I'm considering moving to a different service and letting them pay for my ETF.  I have called Verizon asking if there was anything they could do to allow me to upgrade early and they said no.  When did this start happening?  They tried to sell me the "Edge" but thats the same as paying 700 dollars.

ATT doesnt care how long you've been with them
cox doesnt care how long you've been with them
    your eletricity company doesnt care
    your gas station doesnt care
    your grocery store doesnt care
your car insurance might care , a little.
Just because uncle  tommy gives you a discount because he's been cutting your lawn for years doesn't mean a large company would. And why should they?
