We were given a tvc to put together using clips from a local tv station (DVCPro and DVCam). We put the entire thing together in Motion in a DVPAL Anamorphic project, with tons of FX plug-in effects (blooms, light rays, glass brick diffusions,etc.) that won't render out in FCP. Now that it's built we need to output to Beta. So not sure what to do at this point because we don't have a Beta deck. I'm guessing that we should export it out of Motion in either Apple animation codec or in 10-bit uncompressed and then take it into a 10-bit uncompressed FCP sequence, export that as a Quicktime and deliver that to a post house to output onto Beta. But not sure if that's going to give us the best quality - which we desperately need because this is going out on tv and is going to be playing on the facades of a couple skyscrapers.

Hey Thrillcat - it's a PAL project. And what's strange is that Motion gives you NTSC SD and NTSC DV as separate options, but when it comes to PAL there's only PAL DV-Broadcast SD (which is what I'm working in). The frame rate isn't a problem, it's 25 fps throughout. So I assume I output it via Compressor as 8-Bit uncompressed PAL? Or am I missing something here?
Michael - we'll definitely talk to the post people before we lay it onto Beta. And your advice is well heeded. Shanghai's a seriously tricky town when it comes to post. Most places are just a couple kids running a pirate version of Adobe Premier. There are a couple FCP shops, but they're expensive (especially when they find out you're a foreigner).

Best Output Format for Slide Show?

If I were to purchase Final Cut Studio...
What would be the best output format to use for a simple slideshow intended for Web deployment? In other words, which encoding method will provide the best compromise between file size and video quality? The slideshow is a series of simple static images with some fade transitions and Ken Burns effects. There is also a soundtrack for background music.
A 1.5 minute slideshow with soundtrack created using Adobe Flash is less than 2 MB in size (which is great for Web deployment), and it looks very good. If that same slideshow is exported from Flash to a QuickTime-compatible format, it balloons to over 20 MB!
So what I'd really like to know is, if something like Final Cut Pro were used to create that same slideshow, would I be able to produce a web-ready video that rivals the Flash version in size?

A 90s slideshow that was less than 2 MB as a SWF file became a 27 MB behemoth when exported using the H.264 codec. The bottom line is that Final Cut Studio will be far more useful and versatile for what I need to do, and I would be much more proficient with that software; but if I can't output video files that rival those of Flash in terms of quality and file size, then I might have to get a copy of Flash after all.
And yes, you can convert a QuickTime movie to flash, but it's just not the same in terms of file size as generating the same slideshow directly in Flash. I suspect this is because Flash is optimized for animation, whereas the QuickTime codecs are designed for video, and a simple slideshow is more of an animation than a video.
So my real question is (and I suspect the answer is no), is it possible using Final Cut Studio to generate a simple slideshow which rivals the output from Flash in terms of file size for a given resolution?

For the Manager Self-Service application we’ve copied various workflows which were modified to meet business needs. Part of this exercise was creating custom PL\SQL Package Procedures that would gather details on the WF using them on custom notification sent by the WF.
What I’m looking for is if/when the PL\SQL procedure errors, how does one send an failure message back and display it on the SS Page?
Writing information into a log or table at the database level works for trouble-shooting, but we’re looking for something that will provide the end-user with an intelligent message that the workflow has failed.

We have implemented the same kind of requirement long back.
We have defined our PL/SQL procedures with two OUT parameters
1) Result Type (S:Success, E:Error)
2) Result Message
In the PL/SQL procedure we always use below construct when we want to raise any message

What are best output options in DVDSP for playback on VGA Computer Screen?

I understand that DVDs were designed to be viewed on TV sets - not computer monitors with much higher resolution than a TV set.
However .... I'm curious what the best output options are within DVDSP3 for playback on a standard 19" VGA computer screen 1024x768 and not necessarily on a TV screen. Any ideas?
Will DVDSP3 address playback on a standard VGA computer screen any better than iDVD6? .... or are they both very much the same?
Here's my objective:
MiniDV>FCP HD >DVD SP3>DVD-R / Playback on VGA 19" Monitor only (no TV involved).
or...

George - I'm not a web designer, so I'm probably not the best person to respond but here goes anyway (FWIW):
(anywhere from 10sec to 2min) for website visitors to play (but not download). There can be multiple audios per web page.
No problem. QuickTime. X-platform and you can set whether it's downloadable or not - but that's really moot, as anything on the web can be captured, especially with the 'analog loophole' such as WireTap or Audio Hi Jack.
I need a combination of buttons from very simple round (or square 20x20 pix) to a bar style with volume control, both with the option to change the color to fit my site.
Buttons are your business - nothing to do with playback functionality. They are usually just a link to a file - your site should be set up to play anything, by anything, that's clicked on… Flash, QT whatever
a player that runs from my site and not somebody else's.
So you're hosting? I'd hate to go down that path… what if your site takes off? What if it goes down?You'd never handle the bandwidth. IMO better to buy inexpensive (but competent) hosting for $10 or so per month and avoid the headaches, and expand the hosting service as and when required.

(Sothinkmedia *dot* com) is one of them. That will also allow you
to attach a playback bar, or, just use the one in your media
player, similar to what you see in YouTube.

Best practice question -- copy container, assemble it, build execution plan

So, this is a design / best practice question:
I usually copy containers as instructed by docs
I then set the source system parameters
I then generate needed parameters / assemble the copied container for ALL subject areas present in the container
I then build an execution plan JUST FOR THE 4 SUBJECT AREAS and build the execution plan and set whatever is needed before running it.
QUESTION - When i copy the container, should i delete all not needed subject areas out of it or is it best to do this when building the execution plan? I am basically trying to simplify the container for my own sake and have the container just have few subject areas rather than wait till i build the execution plan and then focus on few subject areas.
Your thoughts / clarifications are appreciated.

Hi,
I would suggest that you leave the subject areas and then just don't include them in the execution plan. Otherwise you have the possibility of running into the situation where you need to include another subject area in the future and you will have to go through the hassle of recreating it in your SSC.

SAP Adapter Best Practice Question for Deployment to Clustered Environment

I have a best practices question on the iway Adapters around deployment into a clustered environment.
According to the documentation, you are supposed to run the installer on both nodes in the cluster but configure on just the first node. See below:
Install Oracle Application Adapters 11g Release 1 (11.1.1.3.0) on both machines.
Configure a J2CA configuration as a database repository on the first machine.
Perform the required changes to the ra.xml and weblogic-ra.xml files before deployment.
This makes sense to me because once you deploy the adapter rar in the next step it the appropriate rar will get staged and deployed on both nodes in the cluster.
What is the best practice for the 3rdParty adapter directory on the second node? The installer lays it down with the adapter rar and all. Since we only configure the adapter on node 1, the directory on node 2 will remain with the default installation files/values not the configured ones. Is it best practice to copy node 1's 3rdParty directory to node 2 once configured? If we leave node 2 with the default files/values, I suspect this will lead to confusion to someone later on who is troubleshooting because it will appear it was never configured correctly.
What do folks typically do in this situation? Obviously everything works to leave it as is, but it seems strange to have the two nodes differ.

What is the version of operating system. If you are any OS version lower than Windows 2012 then you need to add one more voter for quorum.

You can connect an iPod to any sound system. So the best "output device for iPod" is the same as the +best output device, period.+
I'm told you get better sound (for the purpose of feeding into a sound system) if you connect the audio output through the docking connector, instead of from the headphone jack. You get +line level audio out+ like with other audio system components.
You can do so if you have a Docking Station device with a stereo jack, or if you get a cable like this one.

what's the best output format to burn a dvd with? I normally select a h264, but i don't know which preset i should use (between "match source high bitrate and hd1080...)

File Size rests primarily on Bit-Rate, which roughly is = to "quality," and then the Project's/Sequence's Timeline Duration. It can become a delicate balancing act between quality vs file size. The amount of motion, especially off-axis motion, would be where to look for ultimate qualtiy, established by Bit-Rate. Lower motion footage, will still look good,at a lower Bit-Rate, but only the editor, or the client, can make the final determination.

Note: the above is focused on Premiere Pro, but most applies directly to PrElements, as well. However, the term for Export is now in PrE's Share Tab, while Export is the term used for either direct output,or output through AME (Adobe Media Encoder).

Panasonic SD700 - Best output??

Im recording video on my Panasonic SD700, which I import into FCE using Log and Transfer.
When I export to Quicktime, the resulting video is either of a poor quality (jagged edges as the camera moves around etc), or the frame rate drops so panning is not smooth.
What are the best output settings, assuming I want to ultimately get my video onto DVD???

Before exporting make sure you have rendered everything.
I often have need to experiment with different settings and see the results quickly on DVD so I keep a few DVD±RWs handy that I can re-use hundreds of times, which saves wasting DVDs.
My tests are usually no more than a minute long, using typical problematic footage eg. action rather than static shots.
These mini-projects take only minutes to prepare plus a few more minutes to burn to DVD.

Very hard to say at this stage. What is it you're trying to do? Do you want to listen to audio through speakers or a hi-fi? Do you want to transfer audio files to a different medium? Do you want to record audio from your MacBook to a recording device? You need to give us more to go on!

Db_stat output question (last column value?)

Searched everywhere, can not find this mentioned anywhere. What are the meanings of the columns in the db_stat -C output, for example:
Locks grouped by lockers:
Locker Mode Count Status \--------------- Object \------------

I take this to indicate:
Locker 1 has two READ locks on 840055011, which is an open handle
Locker 4 had been declared, but is now empty, awaiting its call to duty
Locker 5 has two READ locks on 840055038, again, an open handle
The pid and thread information are self-describing I believe.
My questions are, what would the difference be between the two different READ locks in, say, locker 1, one line ends w/ 2, the other w/ 0. Is this a problem in my code, could I possibly have opened the same handle twice?
Additionally, I know the database handle is being named 840055011 but is listed as "840055011:840055011", is this expected, or again, might I have an issue. I'm fairly sure this is simply naming and probably arbitrary.
If there is a source for the db_stat output that I have missed, by all means, please let me know, I've tried my best to RTFM, but couldn't find many M's.
