Best Photoshop plug-in or action for converting photos to a spray paint look?

For a project I will be doing, the client will be receiving a bunch of photos from their employees. Traditionally, these photos are not well-composed, high-res, professionally shot images but selfies or other type images they might take with the camera on their phone.
This year, the client has asked me if it would be possible to convert these images into something that looks like it's been painted by a graffiti artist, partly because their theme is somewhat "urban" and partly because I think they think that this would gloss over the bad quality photos. However, they don't want the stencil-outline one or two colour Banksy look kind of thing. As much as I dread saying it, they want something that I can just apply to the photo and convert it to give a uniform look as there may be as many as 300 photos. I have been researching various pieces of software, plug-ins and tutorials but I'm just getting bogged down by it all and to make matters worse, they want to see what it could look like before they will agree to it, so it's not like I can go on a software spending spree. If someone does have a solution that I think works, I will be happy to pay for it -- I'm not looking for a freebie -- but I can't afford/the budget doesn't allow purchasing multiple products for testing purposes. When the photos do come in, there won't be budget or time to painstaking handcraft them all, either. They will not be used in a print application so resolution is not an issue.
Which is why I'm here. I was hoping that someone might have been in a similar situation and has a suggestion. I've already looked at
http://www.alienskin.com/snapart/snap-art-examples/

http://www.digitalanarchy.com/toonPS/main.html
http://www.autofx.com/products/automagic-photo-effects-gen1/
But there's so much out there these days it's hard to keep track and Google returns a lot of um... interesting results that have nothing to do with what I'm looking for.
Also, if there is an AfterEffects plug-in that would do it, I'm fine with that too. I haven't looked at the filters I have yet.
Thanks!

First you need to make sure that the offline files location on client PCs will change location once the new server comes online. This depends on how you push these settings out in the first place, generally it is best to use GPOs to achieve this but you may or may not be doing it this way.
You could cheat and create a CNAME which points the location of the old share to the new, but this is messy and not a great solution.
When it comes to the actually copying files, create a Robocopy script and have it run out of hours, probably over a weekend would be the best time.
Make sure you sure that any scripts/GPO/Applications which point to the old file server are changed to the new location before you go live with the migration.

  • Where do I find a qualified PhotoShop Plug-in filter developer for a freelance project?

I need to hire a programmer (freelance) to develop a PhotoShop plug-in filter. I'm in the SF Bay area, but unfamiliar with the industry. I know I need someone skilled in C++, algorithms, PhotoShop SDK and Mac platform. I just don't know where I should be looking to find a qualified person or company.
A web search for PhotoShop programmer doesn't bring up what I need. A Craigslist search under Computers didn't come up with anyone with PhotoShop Plug-in experience. Sites like Freelance.com, GetACoder.com, etc., provide few responses and all are "off-shore".
Where should I search for a programmer (Preferably Bay Area) for my project?

  • Actions for converting aspect ratios

Here is a little tip if you want to resize your camera images for a slide show.
I needed to convert and resize my 3008 x 2000 RAW images to PAL Standard for a slide show.  I use PS CS3 and I was using IMAGE>Pixel Aspect Ratio to convert the file then IMAGE>Size to resize to 720 x 576.  I decided to create an Action to autoamte the process and when I opened up ACTIONS lo & behold Adobe have already created an Action for all the NTSC and PAL formats.
All it takes is to open your image, select Actions and select the format you want, that is it.   All I need to do now is create a Batch File to automate a over 200 image files.
If like me you use PSD files then they must be flattened first and the Action is not written for images in portrait mode, these have to be done through IMAGE>Pixel Aspect Ration and then IMAGE>Size  with the width and height transposed and Constrain Proportions unticked.
    Doug.

    Doug,
I agree that Actions are the way to go in PS. Mine also change the Color Bit Depth Mode to 8-bit, as I am almost always working in 16-bit, when I process my Camera RAW files. Not sure about the included PS Actions, but in PS CS2, I have just written several that do all the pre-processing, and then do a Automate>Batch for entire folders of these images. I also will keep the files in PSD format, when I do the final Save_As.
This ARTICLE covers most of my operations, using your workflow.
Nice to know that PS installs with Actions that can do most of this. I never saw them in CS/CS2, but maybe just did not look, or perhaps Adobe has added them in CS3/CS4. Nice to know.
    Thank you,

  • How determine best initial setup (resolution, etc.) for printing photo

Have worked with older versions of photoshop, now working towards bettering overall skills, and using Photoshop CS4.   Would like to ask about how to setup an image initially, when first click File > New
Typically will be "photoshopping" jpg images, from 12 mega-pixel camera, and want to print color photos at max resolution, at local photo printer.  Am using Windows 7 PC, 64bit (maybe not relevant?).  So question is… how do you know what to enter for settings.
Example.  Working now on an image to print as a 16” x 20” photo, at whatever would be highest/best resolution.  But don't want to create a massive file with overkill resolution that far exceeds what the original picture has in it.  So, what would be best settings to fill in the blanks below?  Thanks for any quick/direct insights, plus any basic articles that cover this...
    File > New
    Preset:                   Custom
    Width:                    ___ in   (16?)
    Height:                   ___ in   (20?)
    Resolution              ___ pixels/inch
    Color Mode             ___
    Background Color   ___

Before we get into the specifics, I want to ask "why" you're doing File - New to work on photos (opposed to just File - Open).
Generally speaking, for doing photo or other editing you want to work at or higher than the pixel count you'll want to print at.  Even with inkjet printers, there are actually visible differences right up to about 600 ppi, though most folks feel 300 ppi is sufficient for a good print.  Somewhere on this forum I wrote up a post where I tested a highly detailed image printed at various ppi levels then examined the results critically with a loupe and took macro photos.
    My recommendations / opinions:
I suggest rather than trying to manage ppi early in the process that instead you think in pixels.  I've even changed my rulers to measure in Pixels by default, so my File - New menu shows me the pixel counts.  Think in pixels while editing, but keep in mind your ultimate use for the image.
If you're just doing photo editing, and not trying, for example, to put together a collage or something, but looking to print one photo, here's a suggestion:
    1.  Open the image at the camera's native resolution or higher if your computer is powerful enough.  What I mean by this is if you open a raw file through Camera Raw, consider choosing one of the upsampled resolutions.  I open my Canon 40D files at 6144 x 4096 pixels, for example.
    2.  Do your photo editing at the pixel size at which you opened the image.  In other words, don't do things that resample it.
    3.  Only consider resampling to match the needs for output.  For example, if you're going to print the file, you may not need to resample at all - just let the printer driver do it and see how that works.  But if you're going to publish on the web, you will probably want to downsample the image.  But do this after you've saved your master file (if you're going to save a copy).  Consider the downsampling preparation for output.
In your example, if I were prepping a photo for 16" x 20" output, I'd do this:
    1.  Open my raw file at 6144 x 4096 (the largest Camera Raw will emit)  x 16 bits/channel.  Some quick mental math says that the print ppi will work out to the vicinity of 300ish, which is good for an image that size.
    2. I'd set the Image size of the smaller side in the Image Size dialog to 16" height WITHOUT resampling.  The other side will show as 24", indicating the image will need to be cropped, I'd then crop to 20" on the longer side, again making sure not to resample.
    3.  I'd do my various editing steps without resampling, and sharpen near the end.  The order of steps 2 and 3 isn't really important.
    4.  I'd then do File - Print.
The thing to do is if you're unsure of things, just try them and do test prints, and use your own judgment about what looks better.  Don't assume you HAVE to do things a certain way because of what others say.  You might just find a workflow that works for you and gives you dynamite results with your ways of working and your equipment and software.
    Good luck.

  • What's the Best Photoshop CS5 Scratch Disk Setup for New MacPro 12 Core?

    Hello all...
I'm awaiting delivery of a new MacPro 12 Core with 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD drive (Bay1) + 2TB (Bay2) + 2TB (Bay3). Normally I would partition about 60GB of one of the 2TB drives to make an exclusive scratch disk for Photoshop to ensure optimum performance.... with the new spec MacPro and especially the new 512GB SSD, do I still need to do this..?
Any suggestions of comments most welcome... as I want to try to get my new machine set up as best I can before I start copying over my existing data and filling hard drives etc. Photoshop CS5 and Quark Express 8 are my two core apps that I use daily.

…Well yes, technically you've got me on that I will admit.  I'll try to rephrase to be a bit more accurate. The best scratch disk is one you don't need to rely on performance wise, by having enough RAM to handle the data performance needy tasks that would otherwise be sent to the scratch disk, when enough RAM can't be accessed by Photoshop…
    …Hows that?
    Still wrong, alas.
The scratch disk is used always.
See this very short (two-message) thread:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/2847996#2847996
    Excerpt:
    [Chris Cox writes:]
…Photoshop needs to allocate scratch space for data, in case it needs to
write that data to disk later -- otherwise you would randomly fail with
"out of scratch space" in the MIDDLE of an operation…
Furthermore, Photoshop sets the size of the scratch disk ahead of time—the instant you open an image file or create a new document—basing it on assumptions the application makes taking into account your usual, past workflow practices, your settings and the pixel dimensions of the document.
Bottom line:  the scratch disk always plays a part.
Do a forum search filtering the options with Chris Cox in the "Who" box, "scratch" as key word, and Photoshop Macintosh as the forum.  You'll find some enlightening reading.  Examples:

  • What is the best setup (cords, hardware and software) for converting tape cassettes to mp3 using iMac?

I have a huge collection of tape cassettes that I want in my iTunes library.  I want to know what the best cords, hardware (type of Tape cassette player/recorder) and software to use.

It depends on what kind of inputs your Mac has:
If your iMac is a 2012 or older model it probably has an audio line input, in which case you can directly connect your tape deck outputs to your iMac.  Generally this requires a cable with 2x RCA male connectors on one end and 1x 1/8" (3.5mm) stereo male connector on the other end.
If you have a more recent iMac that does not have a line input you will need to get a USB audio interface like a Focusrite Forte, but in these cases you will need to pay attention to the kind of cable inputs the USB device has.
In both cases you will need recording software.  There are many choices.  I have used Sound Studio with great success for tapes, vinyl and live recordings.  (Note: if you are using a USB audio interface it may come with its own recording software.)
Pay attention to whether or not your tapes were recorded with or without Dolby B or C noise reduction; and also whether or not your tape deck supports none, Dolby B or Dolby C - getting each tape matched with your deck settings makes a big difference in the results.  And depending on how quality conscious you are you may also want or need some noise reduction software, in which case I suggest looking at Wave Arts MR Noise, SoundSoap or Audacity.
You might also consider just purchasing selected CDs instead of investing in all the work required to set up, record, edit & clean up recordings from some of your old tapes.

  • Actions for All users - Detection Problem

I have created some action in illustrator and copied in the Presets\Actions folder. But it is not detecting for all users. Is there any way make the recorded action to be detected for all users?
Version: Illustrator CS2 and CS3 Windows XP SP2
The same way I did for photoshop is detecting recorded actions for all users after copying to default action folder.
    Thanks,
    Selvakumar

Check the permissions on the files themselves. They certainly do not inherit the properties of the folder and thus are not readable by all users. "System" and "Everyone" should possibly have full access in that case.

    Hi André
As your configuration looks correct buttons "launchBSP" and "DisplayReminderView" should be displayed in the preview area. If you are running NW 7.10 and above the actions will not be displayed as buttons but  included in context menu. After fix described in note 1537122 the access to context menu entries is changed to right click on the menu item.

The plug-ins folder isn't the right place. Basically they just have to be in a known location but the normal one is in the Presets\Actions folder in the CS4 folder* under app data.
You then load them via the Actions palette drop-down menu.
