Best Place in Folder Hirearchy to Store Shared Referenced Aperture Picture Folder?

Hi,
I'd like to use Aperture in "referenced" mode for my photos (I'm user1).  I'd also like the other user of my mac (user2) to be able to use this folder to see photos. What would be the best place in the OSX folder hierarchy to create this share?
should it simply be in /users/user1/sharedPhotos or should it be somewhere above the "users" directory?
Thank you.

This is a two part answer:
1)  The /Users/Shared folder is intended for this purpose.  E.g. you could create a folder under /Users/Shared/Pictures/ as an example location.
After creating the folder, select it, right click and do a "Get Info".  Check that in the "Sharing & Permissions" section of the info window that you add the other user as having the ability to "read & write" (or change the permission on "everyone" to "read & write")
HOWEVER... this may not have the results you were expecting.
When using "referenced" masters, the only thing in that folder will be the "master" images... these are sort of like digital negatives.  Aperture never actually changes a "master" image.
That means that if you start making adjustments, the other user will NOT be able to see those adjustments because all of Aperture's data is really stored inside the Aperture library.   Your project & folder hierarchy, your list of slideshows, light tables, books, etc; every adjustment you've made to an image; image rankings, keyword tagging, etc. etc.  all of that would be in your Aperture library and not visible to the other user (and likewise none of their changes would be visible to you.)
I do not think this is what you want.
2)  SO INSTEAD, use "managed" masters (when you do an import, select the option to "Store Files:  Inside the Aperture Library") and then move the entire Aperture Library to the /Users/Shared/Pictures folder and make sure both users have "read & write" access.
The only catch is that if you use "Fast Users Switching" on the Mac, make sure you quit Aperture before switching to the other user account and starting Aperture (do not allow both user accounts to keep Aperture running at the same time.)

  • Best place to define a var for sharing between distinct UIViewControllers?

My app has two distinct UIViewController subclasses that handle two distinct UIViews. Both of these controllers need access to the same array of data. Where is the best place to define this array? In the AppDelegate class? If I define it there, how do the ViewControllers gain access to it?

"...rather than assuming you have a pointer to the label in your init method, it might be something you need to fill in in viewDidLoad. That's a great place to do that sort of thing."
I found out the hard way that it's not a good idea to try and do anything with the view in initWithNibName. It's ok to initialize controller data structures there, but setting up the view objects should be done in viewDidLoad.
I started trying to learn iPhone programming from scratch last summer. I'd been a C/Win32 developer since before it was 32 and hadn't programmed a Mac for over 15 years (they've changed a little since then). I thought Cocoa was hot chocolate. Amazon had lots of great looking iPhone SDK books for me to order, but none of them was published yet. When I downloaded "HelloWorld" I spent several hours trying to find where that string came from.. Should've know it was a resource, but I was too disoriented to include *.xib in my grep. Most of the docs at the iPhone Dev Center were pretty scary, and there wasn't much comfort from the Introductions that promised "The iPhone API is very similar to OS/X except..."
When I found out about CS193P I phoned Stanford right away. The $3000 price gave me pause, though. I could audit for less, but was told auditors couldn't ask questions. I wasn't about to ask my employer to help me retool for the iPhone, so I passed on the course. In hindsight I might have had some buyer's remorse when the course was offered for free this Spring. But I sure wish I'd had those lectures last Summer!
Seems to me there needs to be a 'best practices document regarding memory management. I believe there's something like this in the docs, but I need to look into it.
That would be +Memory Management Programming Guide for Cocoa+. If you don't read anything else in that guide, read and memorize Object Ownership Policy.
If you continue to help me out, I'll be sure to mark everything 'answered' so maybe you can take the top slot among contributors!
I'm smiling now. The point system here is fun, and the yellow and green stars are fun to find in the morning. But I'll have the thank you notes long after the points are erased (probably due to Apple Discussions' plan to kick the dev forums out--see the Feedback forum for more on that sentiment).
Actually it's strictly against the rules to discuss points when providing help unless asked, and the people who need help the most usually have no clue about points anyway. At least half the time, you'll see a message saying "Great! That solved the problem", and the OP has closed the thread by clicking "Mark question as answered" (no points) at the top of the page instead of "Solved" in the helper's reply.
What I'd really like is for our nos. 1, 2 and 3 to come back to this forum!! I'm hopeful Rick will return, but worried about 1 and 3 due to the circumstances of their departure. Both Etresoft and Orangekay are experts. They were here almost every day and could handle the advanced questions. I could rely on them to correct my mistakes. If you do a little detective work up in the Feedback forum, you'll see what happened to Etresoft.. Certainly an imaginative way to repay years of expert volunteer service. I shouldn't get started on that, though.
Come to think of it, you actually didn't ask for my life story. But I have a reputation for being verbose that sometimes requires going the extra mile.

  • How do i permanently get rid of large folder that keeps showing up in my Pictures folder?

I have a brand new 1.7 GHz 13" mac book air with 4GB RAM running 10.7.2 and the 128GB hard drive keeps running out of space. I found a folder named 437937936196438674 4.22.50 PM in my Pictures folder that is roughly 40GB and after I throw it out another one shows up in it's place.
I'd really appreciate any ideas or suggestions. Thank you

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software -- potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions -- they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are four lines of text in monospaced type, which are UNIX shell commands. They’re harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of running these commands, search this site for other discussions in which they’ve been used without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
To begin, launch the Terminal application; e.g., by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search. A text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Copy or drag -- do not type -- the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 $7 } '
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|com\.vix|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
    Step 4
    ls -1A {,/}Library/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Sta}* 2> /dev/null
Important: If you synchronize with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, change it to something like “[email protected]” before posting.
Remember, steps 1-4 are all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer -- no typing, except your password.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Where's the best place for a script to store data? CS4

    Hi,
I'm writing a script that needs to store some data in each document that it's run in (I would like the user to be able to store default preferences for the script).
I've thought of getting the script to create a master page + text frame with data. But is there anywhere better and perhaps less visible?
    Thanks,
    Ariel

    Hey!
Well, if you use 'app.activeDocument.insertLabel()' then it's stored with document, even after restart, but document must be saved.
If you use 'app.insertLabel()' then it's automaticaly stored, and can be used even after restart.
Great way to use it for script settings.

  • Can some please provide instructions on how to import an iPhoto library from an old Mac to a new Mac without getting a bunch of duplicates?  I tried transferring my pictures using an external hard drive and then copying it to the Pictures folder on my Mac

Can someone please provide instructions on how to import an iPhoto library from an old Mac to a new Mac without getting a bunch of duplicates?  I tried transferring my pictures using an external hard drive and then copying it to the Pictures folder on my new Mac.  I ended up getting a bunch of duplicates. My old Mac has an older version of iPhoto while the new Mac has iPhoto '11.  Is that the cause of the problem?  Please advise.  Thanks.

Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • Thinning Pictures Folder to Match the iPhoto Library

    Hi everyone,
The folder for my "iPhoto library" folder is 6.63GB and the size of my actual library in iPhoto is 4.8GB. There's a lot of ancient pictures and movies that I thought I had deleted that are still around, obviously. How can I quickly delete the excess and keep what I'm using without going through manually?
I need the space and would really appreciate an answer. Thanks in advance.
    Cheers!

There's a lot of ancient pictures and movies that I thought I had deleted that are still around, obviously.
Are you able to see any of the photos that you think are still around and that you thought you had deleted?
The folder for my "iPhoto library" folder is 6.63GB and the size of my actual library in iPhoto is 4.8GB.
Where do you get 4.8GB as the size of your actual library? Is this your iPhoto Library package inside your Pictures folder?
Is the 6.63GB your Pictures folder?
How can I quickly delete the excess and keep what I'm using without going through manually?
If you are considering deleting files from within the iPhoto Library package then don't, this would have serious effects on the working of iPhoto.
When we hear from you we will provide further information.

  • Unable to import-'Pictures' folder is missing in Destination panel?

My 'Pictures' folder is missing in my Destination panel, as well as 'Users', etc. It shows my C-drive which shows 'My music', but not 'my pictures'.  When I click on 'create/choose' new distination folder using Explorer window, I choose the 'pictures' folder from there, but it doesn't create it.  Not having this problem on my desktop computer, only my laptop (both are pc). • Automatically import photos from Desktop Pictures folder

I've already seen that the "Auto Import" requires an empty folder in order to work. This doubles the amount of work required to add photos. Photos have to be moved from the camera to the empty folder, then after Lightroom autoimports, the images have to be moved to the appropriate folder in Lightroom and on the desktop. Boy, that's a great timesaver Adobe.
I have nearly 20,000 photos in my Pictures folders. These are obviously organized into folders. The largest of my folders is my Travel Photos folder, because I'm a travel writer. In the Travel subfolder, I have subfolders for each county, state/province, and city I've visited. When I return from a trip, I move the photos into the appropriate subfolder.
How to I get Lightroom to automatically find these new photos without going through the manual import process -- which is far more efficient than the Auto Import?

I want autoimport to monitor my Pictures folder (E:\Pictures). When I try to modify the settings, it tells me that I can only direct autoimport to an empty folder. With 19,000+ images, my Pictures folder is far from empty.
There appears to be no workarounds according to the Lightroom user manual from Adobe. The manual says that autoimport cannot read subfolders.
This is definitely an upgrade that's needed. I can't imagine how any photographer would want to go through all the extra work for the autoimport.

  • Where's the best place to store email templates?

    Hi all;
In a web app I store all my email templates in a files folder in the web app. Can't do that with a worker in a cloud service - no files. So where's the best place to store them? In a BLOB? And if so, is there a way to have files in my project get automatically
written to BLOB entries when I publish?

    Hi,
I think we could use azure blob to save files.
    >>is there a way to have files in my project get automatically written to BLOB entries when I publish?
If you choose azure cloud service, you could write the upload code at role onstart method. If you choose Azure website, please consider use azure webjob to do this, refer to

  • Best place for images outside of MS Store App?

Newbie question? If multiple Apps share many images, where is the best place to keep them?
There will be hundreds of images in each App - some of them duplicate between Apps. I do not want to house them in the Images folder of the C# source code because they may change as time goes on. I would like to locate them "outside" the App and
retrieve them when necessary if possible.
I tried parking them in a website and accessing them this way:
ImagePath="http://mywebsite.com/Cookbooks/Receipts/English/Pages/Receipt1.1.1.png". But Go Daddy says I cannot house them that way for a MS store App.
So, where is the *best* place to put these images? Website, Web server, OneDrive, Azure, etc. Any other directions for building a scalable and flexible App would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi,
I think that's depend on your scenario.
you could also use Windows Azure Mobile Services. There's a good Todo app sample on the following site -
    http://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/develop/mobile/tutorials/get-started/
Or you can use web service, we can use httpClient to communicate with it.

Usually from Apple, unless they don't carry it anymore then you'll have to go to a third party source.
Apple has to replace the newer internal batteries usually, so if your machine is more recent you'll have to go to them, also to stay under the warranty/AppleCare.

  • What is the best place to store global constants?

    Hi,
I want to store some contants and access it through procedures and functions, what would be the best place to do this? I thought substitution strings would work, but it isn't working for me in my procedures. Can we use Substitution string in compile code such as procedures and functions? I use SQL developer to write procedures.

    Hi,
Table is good if "constant" might change so you can create APEX form to maintain those.
You could also use package specification just for constants e.g.
    CREATE OR REPLACE
    PACKAGE MY_GLOBALS
    AS
      g_const_1 CONSTANT DATE := TRUNC(SYSDATE) + 365;
      g_const _2 CONSTANT VARCHAR2(30) := 'somestring';
    END;
Then you can refer those in procedures, functions and APEX processes like (package_name.constant_name) MY_GLOBALS.g_const_1.

  • Best place to store application database

Where is the best (most secure) place to store database files that are application specific?
I'm writing a kiosk application that runs on Windows 7 x64 as a desktop application.  A non-privileged user will be logged in to Windows and the application runs as this non-privileged user.  It relies on 2 MySql database files, one with read-only
access and the other with read-write access.  Where is the best place to store these 2 database files such that only the user that the application is running as (the currently logged in user) has access to them?  My concern is keeping them secure
if someone manages to log into the machine as a different user.  Am I best to put them under %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\<MyCompany>\<MyApp> ?

Yes.  You should programmatically obtain the directory by calling SHGetKnownFolderPath() +
    FOLDERID_LocalAppData
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/bb762188(v=vs.85).aspx
By Default the only users with access to a user's %AppData% directory are LocalSystem, Administrators and the user itself.  A different user could not access the directory unless the user was an Administrator who was elevated.
