Best Practice Attaching USB drive to VM

Since USB passthru is no longer supported in OVM, what is the best practice and or recommendation for loading large amounts of data to a VM from an external USB drive?

thxceej, welcome to the discussion area!
Suggest that you connect the drive directly to your MBP, then open
Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Click to select your drive on the left and then click Repair Disk at the lower right of the window and let the process run. It may take 30-60 minutes depending on how much data you have on the disk.
When the disk has been repaired, power down the complete network...all devices. Connect the drive back to the USB port on the Time Capsule. Then start the modem first, then your router, then devices one at a time until everything is powered back up.
See if that helps.

  • Attaching USB drive causes EX4 to become unresponsive.

Hello, I have tried to setup a usb to nas backup a few times and keep having the same problem. Upon attaching the 4TB usb drive (usb 3.0) to the back of the EX4 the NAS becomes unresponsive. I can no longer access it from the dashboard or the my cloud app on a mobile device. The app says it is offline. The ex4 is on but no drives are spinning. The usb drive is spinning however.
Once, I was able to see the EX4 and the attached USB drive in my file explorer. It showed the USB drive as a share. It said something like "Share 2_1." However the internal folders were not visible. Then the EX4 froze and went unresponsive - which caused me to try and manually shut it down. It did not power down and after making sure no data was being transferred I had to pull the power (as recommended on this forum).
Once I was able to get as far as setup up a USB to NAS backup on the dashboard. I set up the source and destination folders, etc. upon saving the job the EX4 is inaccessible, while the USB drive spins.
What's going on? Is it taking a long time to index the attached drive? Is it not compatible with the USB drive (seagate 4tb external NTFS USB 3.0)?
Any insight or advice would be great. Thanks!

By default the EX4 will scan the attached USB share for media.  This process takes all the CPU of the EX4 for long periods of time, and can also lead tot he creation of numerous metadata directories in your attached drive.  You should turn this off. In addition, if you use the USB drive for backups, the DEFAULT option for the EX4 is to commence backups when the drive is connected.  This setting can be turned off in the GUI setup for the backup jobs. In addiiton, in my experience, NTFS drives take more overhead than EXT formatted drives.

  • Best practices with external drives connected to Time Capsule?

I'm enjoying my new MBP but the storage limitations are a challenge with twenty+ years of data. I know it's not technically sanctioned by Apple but in another forum I found a discussion about successfully connecting an external drive to the Time Capsule. I tried this for a few months and had some problems, so I wonder if anyone here might have some insight into which of my drives would be best to use in this way and what, if anything, I must do to bless it for the task.
The drive most highly recommended in the forums at the time is the WD My Book. After buying it I learned that is Windows users install a package and update the driver for use with Time Machine, which Mac users are not able to do. The driver is available on the web but it's said to cause problems with Mountain Lion, which I can confirm. It's USB 3.0 and powered, though, which my two alternatives are not. It's also 2 TB and presently in two partitions. I also have a Seagate Free Agent GoFlex 500 which gets extremely hot with any use and an Iomega eGo Helium 500 I've been using for backups. Both are USB 2.0.
My goal is to put my iTunes Library and Time Capsule on the net (running  2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz, averages 50Mbs). When I did this for a few months with the WD both its shares frequently dropped off my Desktop, as if powered down or something. Also there were the issues with Time Machine many others are having. Right now our video collection sits on the Time Capsule. Would it make sense to move our video to the WD and run iTunes and Time Machine on it? If so, do you have any tips for formatting, petitioning, or drivers (or anything else) to help this run smoothly? The WD works fine when hard-wired and the TC, too is fine without the WD at the party.
    With apologies for the tome.

Thanks, but the drive is connected directly to the back of the Time Capsule by an ethernet cable.
Ah, that's a different colored horse.
You have a NAS (Network Attached Storage) drive, not a USB external drive connected to the USB port.
Many of those need software/firmware updates to work with Lion.  Check with Iomega.

  • Can't access the Time Capsule Drive and attached USB drive

I bought the 3 TB Time capsule a couple of months ago.  I am using it as my wireless router for a cable modem and have attached a USB drive (seagate) to the TC.  I use the TC drive for time machine only.  It worked well at first, for about the first month.   Now I have trouble accessing the TC drive as well as the USB drive.  The router function works perfectly fine.  The drives show up in the Finder under Shared but  cannot connect.  Time machine does not back up because it says the back up drive is not available.  In disc utility, the base station shows with the correct name, but I can't access it. It asks for a pasword but does not respond, so I cannot reboot it from my computer.
If I restart the TC (power off and on), it works fine, I can access both drives.  However, this problem recurs, sometimes within a few days.  I have also noticed, which may be related, that when I enter time machine (when everything is working fine), some of the back-ups are blank.  There is a date and time but no actual back-up.  Not sure if this is related.
I'm runing Mavericks 10.9.2 on an older MacBook, 15" late 2008 with 2.4 ghz dual core.

    Hi Bob,
I updated Mavericks but still had the same problem, so I did a hard reset on TC, although I held the button for over 5 seconds and the amber light was flashing rapidly, it acted like a soft reset.  Still no change so I rebooted my laptop.   Still had an excellent internet connection but in AirPort utility, the TC is grayed out and says device not found.  Light on TC was amber.  So, I tried a hard reset again, but the light wouldn't flash at all.  Unplugged it and after pluggin back in, acted like a hard reset.  I restored previous settings and it is fine for the moment.  Will keep you posted if it recurs.  Hopefully it will not with updated Mavericks, but I get the feeling the problem may be the TC.

  • Best practice for # of drives for Oracle on a Windows 2003 server

I need to know what the best practice is concerning the # of drives that should be built on a Windows 2003 server to ensure best performance and most effective back up and recovery, for both the application itself and the data base.
I'm not certain, but it may be only a 32 bit machine. I'll update this once I know for sure.

We are in the process of migrating our Oracle 10 database (20G) to a new maschine.
How should we configure our disks (8 in total)?
    1. SAME: "Stripe and mirror everything"?
    2. Doc 30286.1 "I/O tuning with different RAID configurations" and 148342.1 "Avoiding I/O disk contention" say:
    database files on RAID01
redo and archive logs on RAID1
    temp on RAID1
So, what is the best practice?

  • Will Time Machine backup Time Capsule files to an attached usb drive?

    Hi Everyone,
I want to put shared media files on my Time Capsule and then have Time Machine backup my imac and all the files on the TC to a usb drive attached to the Capsule. Possible? That way I have a shared media server that is being backup up regularly.
    Thanks for the help!

No. Time Machine cannot backup any network attached storage device such as TC. TM can only backup a Mac's internal HDD plus and ATTACHED/LOCAL HDD to the external HDD connect to the TC USB port.

  • AEBS Erratic behavior when connecting to attached USB Drives in XP

I have the old 10 100 version of the AEBS. I have always had problems with connecting to the attached USB (3) drives on a powered USB adapter. I have spent hours on the phone with Apple Support and eventually Apple released new firmware for the AEBS. This seemed to correct the connection problem for my iMac under Leopard. The AEBS does show in the Finder and I can connect to it with no problems. When I use my XP pc, the story is entirely different.
There seems to be several problems and maybe someone can help me with this.
Every time I shut down the XP machine, I have to remap the drives to letters X. Y, and Z. At times I am simply asked for the password to the AEBS to connect. At other times I have to disconnect the mapped drives (they no longer work but still show in explorer) then remap them again. This will work some times but most of the time I will get a message saying the network connection is unplugged (this is the AEBS restarting as I no longer have access on my iMac) and the mapping process will fail. This should be a simple process and I should be able to access the 3 drives either by mapping them or going through the network connections in Explorer.
Does anyone know why this process of mapping drives on the XP machine would keep restarting the AEBS? Is there any way to permanently keep the connection to the AEBS 3 hard drives when I reboot the XP machine?

I would also like to do this, but in the meantime, here is my question for you: How did you connect multiple hard drives to the AEBS? Did you just use a USB hub, or did you successfully link the two drives? I have one enclosure that has a USB, and that one is connected and working with the AEBS, but i would like to connect another one also, but it only has FW ports. I tried to link the two together with FW, but the FW HDD isn't showing up. I would be willing to get a new enclosure for that drive, if I was sure it wold work through a hub...

  • Problem attaching USB drive to my TC

Hello all, I have tried searching all over the place and I can't seem to find anything that is helping me.
I have a 2TB USB drive that I recently attached to my MBP, formatted it Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then proceeded to copy about 1TB of data to it. All is working great when it is attached to directly to my laptop but when I connect it to the USB port on my TC to try and use it as an additional network file system the TC flashes orange and tells me the "Disk needs repair". I put it back on my MBP and it still works fine.
Am I missing something here? I should be able to do this right?
Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

  • How to set an attached USB drive to automatic sleep using Airdisk?

    Greetings all!
I am looking for a way to set my two USB drives to sleep when they are not being used. I only use them a few minutes a day, and don't want to run them down or use the electricity to keep them spinning.
It seems there has been some discussion about this but I haven't been able parse all the conversations. Some people seem to have gotten it to work, while others are relying on a drives "internal" mechanisms. It would be great if someone (perhaps at Apple?) could chime in with an overview of the problem.
Perhaps it is linked to the method of authentication - ie., (using Airport Utility 5.1), whether the Disks > File Sharing > "Secure Shared Disks" > is with "disk password" or another method?
Some have suggested a radio button for a future firmware/other update such as:
"Set drives to sleep when not in use" (Let's hope for this!), but I am hoping for a simple solution in the near future.
    Any thoughts out there?
    best to all.
*NB: I first posted this on Posted: Apr 4, 2007 12:23 AM and got NO response at all - hopefully I'll have more luck this time !

    Hello Andy,
    Thanks for your reply.
    1. For using Microsoft Outlook rules, we need to keep the computer on, even after work or the colleague is on leave. That is not allowed in my company.
    2. For sending an auto-reply email based on subject, that is impossible because the emails from customers are different and we don't have a basic standard.
    3. Could you please elaborate how to set a transport rule in Exchange server to achieve the goal?
    Thanks a lot in advance.
    Steven
    1. Only client rules require that the Outlook client remain open. An auto-reply rule should be server-side, so no need to leave Outlook open.
    2. Yep!
    3. Walk through the hub transport rules and you see one that replies with a rejection code. Thats the best you can get with a hub transport rule and not something I would recommend in your scenario. You could also search around for 3rd party solutions.

  • Sharing an Attached USB drive on Network

I have an intel Mac Mini on a network. I would like other machines in the same subnet to see the Mini Pal USB drive I have attached to it. All I have managed to access from the other PCs is the main drive via the home folder.
This is trivially easy to do this on my XP machine. Am I just dense or is it not possible on the Mac?
Thanks for any guidance you can lend.
    - Dave -

I hate mysteries, so sooner or later I'd like to find out how to set those attributes "manually".
Sharepoints is a GUI and you can see how it manipulates the netinfo database when adding new sharepoints.
You can also see what it writes to the windows sharing config file /etc/smb.conf
This will give you an understanding of how to this manually. However it is by far easier just to use sharepoints. Or if you invest in professional server software you can use the workgroup manager.
BTW could you mark this thread as solved as it helps other users who search the forum find specific answers. Thanks.

  • Attach usb drive to time capsule

I have been attempting to SEE the HD attached to the USB port on the TC.  It DID work previously until I had to factory reset the TC.  Now, it doesn't show.  Any suggestions?
I've been to the Disks tab and the File Sharing box is checked.
    Stumped.

Plug the usb drive into the mac.. can you read it??
Plug it back into the TC.. if it disaapears it can be due to USB drawing too much power.. TC is severely underpowered.. and even a powered disk can have issues.
It can be firmware update that happened. If the TC is now on 7.6.3, go back to 7.6.1 or even better 7.5.2
It can be format of the drive.. if it won't show in the airport utility it won't show in the computer.
Retry with a USB hub.. make sure the disk is formatted HFS+ and partitioned using GUID type.

  • Can I attach USB drive to Airport Express USB port

I would like to attach a USB drive to my Apple airport Express USB port so that I can back up my data on my MBP and have my music stored on it for playing back over Apple TV.
Is there any issues to doing this? As an example, how would I see the drive?
    thanks in advance.
    Adam

Well, you can certainly attach a USB drive to the port on the AirPort Express.....but nothing will happen if you do this....since the USB port on the Express will only support a compatible printer and Keyspan remote control.
You will need an AirPort Extreme if you want to attach a shared hard drive to the USB port.

  • Attaching USB Drive - Can't read AP configuration file, kills internet

    Current network:
    Airport Extreme (Sim Dual-Band)
    Mac Pro (wired Ethernet)
MacBook Pro (wired or WiFi N)
    MacBook (WiFi N)
    2 x iPhones (WiFi G)
Airport Extreme in use for several months with no problems. All Macs can read/write it's configuration.
I hooked up a 1TB My Book USB HD to the Airport Extreme via USB. All three Macs (Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, MacBook) could see and read/write to the new drive. The Airport Extreme appeared in Airport Utility on all three Macs. Wired, WiFi N + G internet continued to work great... however none of the Macs could read the configuration file of the Airport Extreme. If I unplugged the USB drive all the Macs could read and write to the configuration file.
I plugged the USB drive back in and left it overnight. This morning, everything continued to work, with the exception that none of the computers could read the configuration of the AP.
Around 10am today the Macs/iPhones could no longer connect to the internet. I disconnected the USB drive and now the internet works again.

    Hey David,
I know you said you read a lot of posts already and none of the other solutions worked, but just in case, if you haven't already I would run through the steps in here:

  • Attaching USB drive with iTunes library to TC

Ok, so I've gotten Time Capsule working properly and I'm ready to move my USB drive, which contains my iTunes library, to TC. I tried it this morning, mounted the drive from my MacBook Pro, changed my library location in iTunes preferences, and iTunes cannot find my music files on the drive.
Is there any way to get iTunes to recognize my library without consolidating it, and without losing all my ratings, added dates, play counts, etc.?

I'm trying to do a similar setup- making my iTunes library available to a couple of desktops and laptops via the hard drive on Time Capsule. Copied my iTunes library there. Changed the preferences on a Mini and on a MacBook as a test. Both are connecting via Airport. They both see the new library, but I have to add the library manually to iTunes (Apple-O). The songs' "Date Added" all reflect the date I just added them. I don't rate my music, so can't comment on that. I'd guess the reatings would also be lost.
My guess is that you could copy both the "iTunes Library" and the "iTunes Library XML" onto TC and that might solve the issue (perhaps you would need to launch iTunes from one of those files by double clicking on them?) the first time. But I really have no idea if this would work.
    Good luck!

  • Attach USB drive to FAS6290

Hi all, We have a business need where we need to transfer a 250GB file in less than an hour from a portable USB drive to a NetApp FAS6290.  I would like to see if it is technically possible to plug in the USB drive directly to the filer head so that I can do some NetApp ONTAP magic (sm2tape, ndmpcopy, etc) to copy the data to and from the USB drive without having to involve the network in any way. Is this possible? Thanks,--Blake Roberts

It is possible to do SMTape to file on NetApp; then you can copy this file to external client and transfer to remote NetApp. You still need enough space on source and destination to do it. Also this is diag level option so usual warning applies. I am not aware of any possibility to connect USB storage device directly to NetApp, and even if this were possible, I would be very surprised if it could be accessed on WAFL layer.
