Best Practice: files that should never be moved or deleted

Hi there.
I've just gone through my computer for the first time in a couple of years and done a massive cleanup, but without really knowing the consequences I guess you could say and now things are acting a little strange.
+(I feel silly even writing this, knowing that all the IT heads out there are sighing a unanimous 'what an idiot'.)+
Can anyone please provide a sort of 'best practice' guide for the files/file types that should absolutely be on the harddrive, or in the apps folder, utilities folder, etc? and if there are any that should 'never' be deleted?
.. or even some program that sort of saves you from yourself by keeping those files safe from being a.) moved and b.) deleted
Would be a huge help!
Thanks in advance ~

Apple has already hidden about half of the folders on a typical OS X install. The ones that make up the Unix core of the OS. So unless you know how to find those, you'll never have to worry about them.
Aside from that, you just want to keep away from the System folder and any of the Library folders. Nothing else should be too crucial to the OS running.
Of course if you wanted to elaborate on "a little strange" we might be able to be a bit more helpful.

  • Assert &  writing code that should never be reached

    hi dudes,
i thing i got that assertion-stuff right BUT there is one thing confusing me:
    from my book:
"The following idiom can be employed to explicitly test that certain locations in the code will never be reached.
    assert false : "This line should never be reached.";
but what is the point of writing code(at all) that will never be reached?
i mean if it should never be reached ill simply never write it.
    even in this tricky EXAMPLE
    int someMthd(int trinityMember)
    switch (trinityMember) {
        case THE_FATHER:
            return psalm101;
        case THE_SON:
            return psalm102;
        case THE_HOLY_GHOST:
            return psalm103;
        default:
            assert false: trinityMember; //Ok BETTER WOULD BE throw new AssertionError(trinityMember);
}if no case match i would get COMPILE TIME error so that will indicate me that method could(possible) never return an int. So if a i can compile it it will be ok!?
so again what is the point of writing code that should never be reached[\b]?

if no case match i would get COMPILE TIME error so
that will indicate me that method could(possible)
never return an int. So if a i can compile it it will
be ok!?But without the default case you can't compile it, so you have to write a default case (or some other code). What code would it make sense to put there other than throwing an exception of some sort or returning a default value?
so again what is the point of writing code that
should never be reached[\b]?You probably believe the code should never be reached in your example because to you it only makes sense to pass either THE_FATHER, THE_SON or THE_HOLY_GHOST as a parameter. But what if somebody were to pass THE_FIRESTARTER to your someMthd method, having not realised that you haven't coded for that argument? What should your code do then? It can't do nothing, so it makes sense to provide a default case that lets the user know (by throwing an exception), that something unexpected has happened. Or, you might decide to return a default value that is useful and perhaps somehow informs client code of the unusual circumstance (for example a return value of -1 might indicate that there is no relevant psalmX).
So this is about robustness - making sure that in unexpected circumstances, your application does something reasonable.

Apple Maps - Please reconsider and include Google Maps. As a long time Apple customer, I am disappointed iOS would regress the system and inconvenience millions because of a vendetta that should never hinder users. Not only does the transit feature I used religiously no longer exist, but clicking on an address in a website now directs users to a poor Google Maps interface. I am surprised to see such a effortless update from a company squatting on the resources to make a change its customers are asking for.

    varjak paw wrote:
Apple has documented an API to provide add-ons to the Maps app in the iOS 6 SDK, so that such add-ons are possible is absolutely not a guess that the capability is there. As to whether someone will indeed develop an add-on for any given transit system, that would be a guess, yes, but at a couple of companies at least have already announced plans to do so.
In select cities and areas - so now I'm going from being able to supply this information myself to either wait for someone to supply an app or write an app myself... This is not feature progression but feature regression. Adding transit times or a specific overlay should not have to be something you need to do through code via an API. So no dice... Your guess that we will see better transit information is just that - a guess, nothing else.
If you don't agree with that editorial, you are certainly free to do so. I provided the link as food for thought for those who have been questioning Apples' decision to drop Google's maps from iOS. Whether or not you agree with Brad's analysis or that of anyone else is up to you.
But on that central issue the editorial fails - it's is not the true tale of why Apple made their move and therefore useless even as "food for thought" (because it's guesswork).

  • Best practice file management

    Hello everyone
I'm hoping to receive some advice on the best way to store a large collection of music, pictures and video, whilst keeping my computer as empty as possible to maximise it's processing power for professional video editing in the future. The computer is for both personal and business use, and I share it with my partner who is a music fiend, but not computer savvy.
I have recently purchased a new 27" iMac with the standard specs (3.1GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5, 4GB memory, 1TB hard drive).  It is currently running Snow Leopard (v. 10.6.6), and I plan to update to Lion when I purchase a new broadband account.
    I also have:
One external 1TB Western Digital drive, currently at 85% capacity, with music, videos and pictures
One external 1TB Western Digital drive, currently empty
A new 2TB time capsule which is not yet set up
Apple TV, not yet set up
A mobile USB modem and basic account, soon to be replaced by a fairly high speed broadband modem with a fairly large download cap
    So far, I have:
created three user profiles - one administrator, and two users
Set up iTunes so each user shares a single library and itunes media folder
We would like to also digitise a large collection of CDs and records.
I was thinking about using the time capsule not only for storage/back up, but also to create a wireless network, allowing it to be stored with my printer and the hard drives can be stored in different room to the computer, away from sight.  The computer is so very gorgeous on it's own after all.... I've been advised also to use it as a wireless router when we purchase our broadband account, so I'm assuming the modem should also be connected to the time capsule in the other room.
Rather than droning on about what I think I should do, I wondered if one of you experts could advise me on the best way to set everything up? I'm not sure that it's the best idea to set it up so the computer is always having to find files wirelessly from the time capsule and connected drives...  Wouldn't that be slow?
The advice I've read in the various forums has been rather confusing, so your advice would be really appreciated!!
    Cheers
    Fiona

    Hi Fiona,
Like your question, I'm in same boat and new to iMAC all together and want to setup backup and sharing strategy via best practice right up front.  Did you get any response or any good best practice you ran across in your research you an share with me?  Thanks.

  • Transports:  Best practice in reversing old transports not moved to PRD

    Hello Guru's,
I have a lot of old transports moved from DEV to QAS that don't work or are irrelevant that need to be reversed.  These transports were made by a consultant no longer with the company and there is no documentation of what was changed.
What is the best method in reversing these changes?
    I appreciate your help!

Next time, don't ask for the best practice. You would likely get more response if you simply ask "What would you do..?"

  • Seaching for Best Practice links that work

    Hi,
past few years I have been able to access SAP Best Practices documents like SAP Best Practices SAP Best Practices for CP and Wholesale Industries
(this one still works and guides me to the building block and process overview documents!).
Recently any link I can find to SAP Industry or Baseline Best Practices ends up with a dead link. See for example trying to get from here SAP Best Practices Baseline packages – SAP Help Portal Page
to Localized for Netherlands V1.607 SAP Best Practices package further below on that page, results in screen shot attached. I have seen that in many more examples (different countries, or in Industry Best Practice Packages instead of Country Baseline packages....)
Does any know whether and how SAP redesigned their access to Best Practices documents (Configuration Guides, eCatts, Scenario Process Overviews etc.?
    Thanks for your reply.
    Thijs

    Hi, Thijs,
There is currently a problem with Best Practices on the Help Portal.  On the home page of the portal (http://help.sap.com/) there is a message that reads "Stay Tuned - There are temporary problems when accessing some content types, for example PDF documents or Best Practices. We are working on a solution."
Our Wholesale Distribution industry group does not manage the Help Portal pages, so, unfortunately, I don't know the status of the problem or when it might be resolved.

  • .What exactly are .itc2 files? can they be moved or deleted ?

I realized that ever since I installed iTunes and started adding music to my
library the space on my C (windows) partition is shrinking.
I have my computer set up for speed, where my C partition has ONLY windows on it.
Programs like iTunes are installed on my P partition and the iTunes data is on my D partition.
Now there are over 1000 .itc2 files on my C drive that will in a short time deteriorate performance by "taking over" my relatively clean C partition, if I continue to build my iTunes library.
    What can I do?
All my music is imported directly from CD's and mp3's to the library. I do not "automatically download missing album artwork". I add all artwork manually one at a time.
    thanx

    Chris CA wrote:
Yes, artwork. All are stored in subdirectories in cache. Here's one example:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\Album Artwork\Cache\1DB66331D2340630\00\15\0
The iTunes folder in My music is the default location for then iTunes library.
    Do this...
    Quit iTunes.
    Drag \My Documents\My Music\iTunes\ folder to the P: drive.
    Hold Shift and launch iTunes.
Select *Choose library* and select the iTunes folder on the P: drive.
iTunes will use the itunes folder in this location. Make sure the P: drive is mounted and ready before launching iTunes.
Thanx, I think that should do the trick. It's as simple as moving the iTunes folder and pointing to the new destination? ...and iTunes will remember the last library location so I won't have to point to it each time I restart?
I moved it to my D (data) partition along with the music. My P (programs) partition has nothing but programs. All partitions are permanently mounted.
    thanx again

  • Microsoft Office 2008 Powerpoint "cannot open the file because it has been moved or deleted"

I am trying to open some slides my professor posted on Desire 2 Learn. It is a .pptx file. Everytime I try to open it I get an error message that says, "Powerpoint cannot access +I (drive) beacuse the file has been moved or deleted"
I have uninstalled and reinstalled Office. And yes, I know just moving it to the recycling bin does not fully uninstall it. I followed the directions given in a different thread. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You may get better answers asking this question in Microsoft's support forums.
    Best of luck.

  • A virus had attached itself to an email that I never opened, and it deleted my Thunderbird email profile! Is there any way to get it back? It's urgent!

A Trojan virus attached to an email that I never opened, but it was in my window as I scrolled through my emails just like the other emails. I don't recall opening it, but if I did I would NEVER open an attachment, not even from people I know, unless I am expecting something! Anyway, my virus scanner caught it, but it did not do anything about it. I ended up finding the folder named "Profile" that contained the virus. I am sure of this. I deleted it, because I could not disinfect or quarantine it for some reason. It apparently deleted my Thunderbird profile, so I cannot log into my email account when I click on Thunderbird desktop shortcut on my Windows screen. Please assist. I am not sure what to do, but I need to access my emails for bills, etc.
    Thank you,
    John

''but it was in my window as I scrolled through my emails''
    What does this mean?
    ''my virus scanner caught it''
Your 'virus scanner' is not supposed to scan your Thunderbird profile folder in the first place.
    ''I deleted it''
Not a smart move. With the profile you also deleted all your mail and accounts.
''I deleted it, because I could not disinfect or quarantine it''
There is no need for this. A malicious attachment won't do any harm to your computer as long as you're not trying to open or run it.
''I am not sure what to do''
Do you still have the deleted folder in Trash? You can try to login to your account via webmail, and check if there are still any messages on the server.
For the future, create backups of your profile folder on a regular basis.

  • 57 GB of Movie Files that I can't locate to delete, please help.

When I look at my storage, it says there is 57GB of movie files, however, I can't find those files.  I have deleted all movie files that I can find and also emptied the trash can.  But can't seem to find the 57GB of movies.  Can someone help please.

If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index. Otherwise, the movies are most likely in the iTunes library. Look for them in All My Files in the sidebar of a Finder window.

  • Conflicting information about files that should not be included in version control

    Hi All,
We are using RoboHelp HTML v9 from the Tech Comms Suite v3.5.
We are two authors who added our help project files into Perforce version control using the instructions provided on the Adobe site. All was going well until I returned from Maternity Leave. Now, we seem to be getting some file conflicts and 'strange behaviour'.
I searched for answers and found the following submissions offering conflicting advice about the .hhp file:
    http://adobe.hosted.jivesoftware.com/message/3880352
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/3853685#3853685
The .hhp file is one of the files causing us troubles. Should this file be under source control? What is the best way for us to remove it from source control, or would it be better for us to remove the whole project from source control and re-add it through RoboHelp once more to ensure whatever it is that happened on my return is eliminated?
Thank you all for your help.
    Regards
    LillibetUK

If you are getting conflicts then these need to be sorted out regardless of whether they should be inside your source control application. I use source control and can tell you that the HHP file should be source controlled. Open it up in Notepad and you'll find all sort of project related data including a list of all the topics in your project. It can also be useful to recover from a corrupted project. For this reason alone I'd always include it in source control.

  • I am using a trial version of Lightroom - not able to access my CC files that are already were moved into Llibrary

Just recently my Creative Cloud files are not showing up in either the Library or Develop tab when I have already previously moved them over.  The arrow on the navigator tabs that is beside Creative Cloud is not solid as where it was before I started having these issues.

What creative cloud files are you referring to? Are you using a trial version of Lightroom from the creative cloud or from the standalone installation? Have you canceled a creative cloud subscription? Your question seems unclear to me.

I have a macbook pro, and a few months ago I had to find some hidden system files. I asked a discussion question, and someone helped me to display all the hidden folders. However, now I can't figure out a way to hide these files again (I no longer need to see them). How do I do this? It's not just one file, but a whole bunch of files.

Open the Script Editor or AppleScript Editor in one of the subfolders of Applications and run the following:
    tell application "Finder" to quit
if (do shell script "defaults read com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles") is "1" then
do shell script "defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 0"
    else
do shell script "defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 1"
    end if
    delay 2
    tell application "Finder" to run
If you change your mind later, run the script again.
