  • SqlCeConnection in CE 4.0: best practices for desktop use?

    I am using SQL Server CE 4.0 in a WinForms desktop application and was wondering what are the recommended practices for using SqlCeConnection in this context. I noticed some older threads on the topic however some of them talk mostly about mobile or are
    from a long time ago
    1. Should a new SqlCeConnection be created every time the DB is accessed or is it better to have on SqlCeConnection open and shared through the entire application?  My application can make frequent writes to the DB and when this happens I notice a noticeable
    UI lag if a new SqlCeConnection is created for which DB access.
    2. Can SqlCeConnection instances be shared across threads? On occasion my application performs DB reads in a background thread. Can I use the same SqlCeConnection instance from different threads?
    3. Are there any additional steps needed to ensure multi-thread safety when multiple threads can access the DB simultaneously when SQL Server CE is deployed in embedded mode? When I create a new SqlCeConnection for each DB access I ran into a few crashes
    and Monitor exceptions, possibly when multiple threads are accessing the same database.
    I am using SQL Server CE 4.0 embedded in a WinForms 2.0 Windows desktop application (non-mobile).  Any advice would be appreciated.

    You must use seperate SqlCeConnection etc object per thread, as these objects are not thread safe.
    I recommend opening the database on the main thread, and keep this connection unused and open for the lifetime of the app to keep the database file and engine "warm".

  • What is a best practice for managing a large amount of ever-changing hyperlinks?

    I am moving an 80+ page printed catalog online. We need to add hyperlinks to our Learning Management System courses to each reference of a class - there are 100s of them. I'm having difficulty understanding what the best practice is for consistent results when I need to go back and edit (which we will have to do regularly).
    These seem like my options:
    Link the actual text - sometimes when I go back to edit the link I can't find it in InDesign but can see it's there when I open up the PDF in Acrobat
    Draw an invisible box over the text and link it - this seems to work better but seems like an extra step
    Do all of the linking in Acrobat
    Am I missing anything?
    Here is the document in case anyone wants to see it so far. For the links that are in there, I used a combination of adding the links in InDesign then perfecting them using Acrobat (removing additional links or correcting others that I couldn't see in InDesign). This part of the process gives me anxiety each month we have to make edits. Nothing seems consistent. Maybe I'm missing something obvious?

    what exatly needs to be edited, the hyperlink or content or?

  • Best Practice for 2008R2 DC off site backup

    hello.
    at the request of the management i am trying to finalize a plan that covers off different potential events that could afflict our domain controllers.
    we currently have 2 DC's in our environment 1 holds all FSMO so we have redundancy if 1 goes down and i can use DC promo to build a new one and add it to the domain, then doing meta data clean up if needed.
    i have system state backups which will be useful if something happens to AD and i still have the original hardware to restore onto.
    however if something horrific happens i lose both dc's and need to restore to new hardware i am dubious of the reliability of these system state backups as i have tested them in the past and often got BSOD issues.
    i toyed with the idea of have a 3rd DC hosted off site in a data center, have replication occur to this and then i could use to rebuild new ones onsite if such a disaster were to occur.
    any one have any suggestions or ideas on this one, or speak from there own experiences in this subject
    Many Thanks

    Having a off-site DC is always good, but in the event of a replicated failure it's not going to help, there is situations where you would need to do a forest recovery (for example backing out of a schema update) Then you need to restore a system state
    backup of one DC and preferably re-install the others.

  • Best Practices for Setting up a Windows 2012 R2 STD Domain Controller in a Remote Site

    So I'm looking for an article or writeup similar to the "Adding Domain Controllers in Remote Sites" TechNet article but for Windows Server 2012 STD R2.  Here is my scenario:
    1.  I want to setup the domain controller at Site A where the primary domain controller is located.  The primary domain controller is Windows Server 2008 R2.
    2.  Once the DC is setup I plan on leaving it on our network for a few days before shipping it to remote Site B for installation
    Other key items:
    1.  The remote Site B will have a different IP range than Site A but will be connected to Site A via a single VPN tunnel.  All the DCs that replicate with each other are on the same domain.
    2.  The 2012 DC that I setup for Site B (same domain in same forest) will be a DHCP, DNS, and WSUS server all replicating to the primary DC at Site A
    Questions:
    1.  What items can I setup while it's at Site A without effecting or conflicting with the existing network and domain controller?  Can I setup a scope once the DHCP role is added?
    2.  All of our DCs replicate through Sites and Services, do I have to manually add this to our primary DC for the new DC going to remote Site B?  Or when does this happen automatically when I promote the DC?
    All and all I'm just looking for a list of Best Practices for 2012 or a Step by Step Guide.  Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi,
    Thanks for your posting.
    When you install AD DS in the hub or staging site, disconnect the installed domain controller, and then ship the computer to the remote site, you are disconnecting a viable domain controller from the replication topology.

  • Best Practice for SRST deployment at a remote site

    What is the best practice for a SRST deployment at a remote site? Should a separate router such as a 3800 series be deployed for telephony in addition to another router to be deployed for Data? Is there a need for 2 different devices?

    Hi Brian,
    This is typically done all on one ISR Router at the remote site :)There are two flavors of SRST. Here is the feature comparison;
    SRST Fallback
    This feature enables routers to provide call-handling support for Cisco Unified IP phones if they lose connection to remote primary, secondary, or tertiary Cisco Unified Communications Manager installations or if the WAN connection is down. When Cisco Unified SRST functionality is provided by Cisco Unified CME, provisioning of phones is automatic and most Cisco Unified CME features are available to the phones during periods of fallback, including hunt-groups, call park and access to Cisco Unity voice messaging services using SCCP protocol. The benefit is that Cisco Unified Communications Manager users will gain access to more features during fallback ****without any additional licensing costs.
    Comparison of Cisco Unified SRST and
    Cisco Unified CME in SRST Fallback Mode
    Cisco Unified CME in SRST Fallback Mode
    • First supported with Cisco Unified CME 4.0: Cisco IOS Software 12.4(9)T
    • IP phones re-home to Cisco Unified CME if Cisco Unified Communications Manager fails. CME in SRST allows IP phones to access some advanced Cisco Unified CME telephony features not supported in traditional SRST
    • Support for up to 240 phones
    • No support for Cisco VG248 48-Port Analog Phone Gateway registration during fallback
    • Lack of support for alias command
    • Support for Cisco Unity® unified messaging at remote sites (Distributed Exchange or Domino)
    • Support for features such as Pickup Groups, Hunt Groups, Basic Automatic Call Distributor (BACD), Call Park, softkey templates, and paging
    • Support for Cisco IP Communicator 2.0 with Cisco Unified Video Advantage 2.0 on same computer
    • No support for secure voice in SRST mode
    • More complex configuration required
    • Support for digital signal processor (DSP)-based hardware conferencing
    • E-911 support with per-phone emergency response location (ERL) assignment for IP phones (Cisco Unified CME 4.1 only)
    Cisco Unified SRST
    • Supported since Cisco Unified SRST 2.0 with Cisco IOS Software 12.2(8)T5
    • IP phones re-home to SRST router if Cisco Unified Communications Manager fails. SRST allows IP phones to have basic telephony features
    • Support for up to 720 phones
    • Support for Cisco VG248 registration during fallback
    • Support for alias command
    • Lack of support for features such as Pickup Groups, Hunt Groups, Call Park, and BACD
    • No support for Cisco IP Communicator 2.0 with Cisco Unified Video Advantage 2.0
    • Support for secure voice during SRST fallback
    • Simple, one-time configuration for SRST fallback service
    • No per-phone emergency response location (ERL) assignment for SCCP Phones (E911 is a new feature supported in SRST 4.1)

    These SRST hardware based restrictions are very similar to the number of supported phones with CME. Here is the actual breakdown;
    Cisco 880 SRST Series Integrated Services Router
    Up to 4 phones
    Cisco 1861 Integrated Services Router
    Up to 8 phones
    Cisco 2801 Integrated Services Router
    Up to 25 phones
    Cisco 2811 Integrated Services Router
    Up to 35 phones
    Cisco 2821 Integrated Services Router
    Up to 50 phones
    Cisco 2851 Integrated Services Router
    Up to 100 phones
    Cisco 3825 Integrated Services Router
    Up to 350 phones
    Cisco Catalyst® 6500 Series Communications Media Module (CMM)
    Up to 480 phones
    Cisco 3845 Integrated Services Router
    Up to 730 phones
    *The number of phones supported by SRST have been changed to multiples of 5 starting with Cisco IOS Software Release 12.4(15)T3.

  • Best practice for running multiple sites on 1 CF install?

    Hi-
    I'm setting up a new hosting environment (Windows Server 2008 Standard 64 bit VPS  configuration, MySQL, IIS 7, CF 9)
    Has anyone seen any docs or can anyone suggest best practices for configuring multiple sites in this environment? At this point I'm thinking simple is best, one new site in IIS for each client (domain) and point it to CF.
    Given this environment, is anyone aware of any gotchas within the setup of CF 9 on IIS 7?
    Thank you in advance,
    Rich

    There's nothing wrong with that approach. You can run as many IIS sites as you like against a single CF install.
    As for installing CF on IIS 7, I recommend that you do the following: install CF 9 without connecting it to IIS, then installing the 9.0.1 upgrade and any hotfixes, then connecting CF to IIS using the web server configuration utility. This will keep you from having to install the IIS 6 compatibility layer that's needed with CF 9 but not with CF 9.0.1.

  • Best practices for 2 x DNS servers with 2 x sites

    I am curious if someone can help me with best practices for my DNS servers.  Let me give my network layout first.
    I have 1 site with 2 x Windows 2012 Servers (1 GUI - 10.0.0.7, the other CORE - 10.0.0.8) the 2nd site connected via VPN has 2 x Windows 2012R2 Servers (1 GUI - 10.2.0.7, the other CORE - 10.2.0.8)  All 4 servers are promoted to DC's and have DNS services

    Under the DNS management > Forward Lookup Zones > _msdcs.mydomain.local

    The DC's should automatically register in msdcs.  Do not register external DNS servers in msdcs or it will lead to issues. Yes, I recommend all zones to be set to AD-integrated. No need to allow zone transfers as AD replication will take care
    of this for you.  Same for mydomain.local.
    Hope this helps.

  • Best Practice for FlexConnect Wireless roaming in MediaNet environment?

    Hello!
    Current Cisco best practice recommendations for enterprise MediaNet design, specify that VLANs be local to a switch / switch stack (i.e., to limit the scope of spanning-tree).
    In the wireless world, this causes problems if you want users while roaming to keep real-time applications up and running.  Every time they connect to a new AP on a different VLAN, then they will need to get a new IP address, which interrupts real-time apps.
    So...best practice for LAN users causes real problems for wireless users.
    I thought I'd post here in case there's a best practice for implementing wireless roaming in a routed environment that we might have missed so far!
    We have a failover pair of FlexConnect 7510s, btw, configured for local switching for Internal users, and central switching with an anchor controller on the DMZ for Guest users.
    Thanks,
    Deb

    Thanks for your replies, Stephen and JSnyder.
    The situation here is that the original design engineer is no longer here, and the original design was not MediaNet-friendly, in that it had a very few /20 subnets bridged over entire large sites.
    These several large sites (with a few hundred wireless users per site), are connected to an HQ location (where the 7510s in failover mode are installed) via 1G ethernet hand-offs (MPLS at the WAN provider).  The 7510s are new, and are replacing older contollers at the HQ location.
    The internal employee wireless users use resources both local to their site, as well as centralized resources.  There are at least as many Guest wireless users per site as there are internal employee users, and the service to them consists of Internet traffic only.  (When moved to the 7510s, their traffic will continue to be centrally switched and carried to an anchor controller in the DMZ.)
    (1) So, going local mode seems impractical due to the sheer number of users whose traffic bound for their local site would be traversing the WAN twice.  Too much bandwidth would be used.  So, that implies the need to use Flex / HREAP mode instead.
    (2) However, re-designing each site's IP environment for MediaNet would suggest to go routed to the closet.  However, this breaks seamless roaming for users....
    So, this conundrum is why I thought I'd post here, and see if there was some other cool / nifty solution I wasn't yet aware of.
    The only other (possibly friendly to both needs) solution I'd thought of was to GRE tunnel a subnet from each closet to the collapsed Core / Disti switch at each site.  Unfortunately, GRE tunnels are not supported in the rev of IOS on the present equipment, and so it isn't possible to try this idea.
    Another "blue sky" idea I had (not for this customer, but possibly elsewhere in the future), is to use LAN switches such as 3850s that have WLC functionality built-in.  I haven't yet worked with the WLC s/w available on those, but I was thinking it looks like they could be put into a mobility group, and L3 user roaming between them might then work.  Do you happen to know if this might be a workable solution to the overall big-picture problem?
    Thanks again for taking the time and trouble to reply!
    Deb

  • Best practice for setting or detecting screen size?

    Hi All,
    Trying to determine a best practice for setting or detecting the screen size. For playbook and iOS, I can set them. But for Android, the number of devices is too large so I'd rather detect. My first choice is to use the stage.stageHeight and stage.stageWidth. This works fine if I set my stage properties with standard meta data:
    [SWF(height="320", width="480", frameRate="64", backgroundColor="#010101")]
    However, if I use the application descriptor file to set the stage dimentions (as suggested by Christian Cantrell here http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flash/articles/authoring_for_multiple_screen_sizes.html)
    <initialWindow>
    <aspectRatio>landscape</aspectRatio>
    <autoOrients>false</autoOrients>
    <width>320</width>
    <height>480</height>
    <fullScreen>true</fullScreen>
    </initialWindow>
    Then the stage.stageHeight and stage.stageWidth are not the correct numbers when my main class is added to the stage. Sometime after the main class is added to the stage, then those numbers are fine. Is there an event I can wait for to know that the stage.stageHeight and stage.stageWidth are correct?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Lee,
    Thanks for the quick response! However, for some reason the heightPercent & widthPercent metadata tags are not working as expected for me.
    I have a wrapper class that I target for compiling, WagErgApplePhone.as where I've got my metadata
    [SWF(heightPercent="100%", widthPercent="100%", frameRate="64", backgroundColor="#010101")]
    sets some stage properties
    stage.quality=StageQuality.LOW;
    stage.scaleMode = StageScaleMode.NO_SCALE;
    stage.align = StageAlign.TOP_LEFT;
    and instantiates my main class
    var main:Main = new Main();
    addChild(main);
    my main class constructor even waits for the stage
    public function Main(){
    if (stage) init();
    else addEventListener(Event.ADDED_TO_STAGE, init);
    in my init function, stage.stageHeight traces out as 375 (expecting 320).
    i have a function which is called via a button press event by the user, and stage.stageHeight traces out correctly (320) there. that's what makes me think that if i wait long enough, i can get the correct stageHeight before init/drawing. but i'm not sure what event to listen for, or if there's another trick.
    if i use Capabilities.screenResolutionX and Capabilities.screenResolutionY the correct values are provided for mobile, but these values are not useful for the desktop and web version of the app. if there's no other solution, i'll execute different code depending on platform.
    again, for reference, my app descriptor:

  • Is there a list of best practices for Azure websites?

    Hi all;
    I was talking with a Sql Server expert today and learned that Azure Sql Server can take up to a minute to respond to a query that normally takes a fraction of a second. This is one of those things where it's really valuable to learn it when architecting as
    opposed to when we go live.
    Websites are not Sql Server (obviously) but that led to the question - Is there a list of best practices for Azure Websites? If so, what are they?
    We will be the website in multiple datacenters and using traffic manager to point people to the right one. The website will run as a REST server using Web API 2, mostly for license checks from our app running on corporate Exchange servers. And a small part
    will be for javascript based web pages used for account CRUD.
    thanks - dave

    sorry I was not sure if you were using a web server or what?
    One other idea out of the slow cooker is to use a dedicated web server with SQL server running beside IIS
    If you are using the standard web sites, then the SQL option is about as slow as FTP uploads, very slow
    I have considered time of day too, and it seems Azure is less loaded early in the AM

  • Best practices for setting up users on a small office network?

    Hello,
    I am setting up a small office and am wondering what the best practices/steps are to setup/manage the admin, user logins and sharing privileges for the below setup:
    Users: 5 users on new iMacs (x3) and upgraded G4s (x2)
    Video Editing Suite: Want to connect a new iMac and a Mac Pro, on an open login (multiple users)
    All machines are to be able to connect to the network, peripherals and external hard drive. Also, I would like to setup drop boxes as well to easily share files between the computers (I was thinking of using the external harddrive for this).
    Thank you,

    Hi,
    Thanks for your posting.
    When you install AD DS in the hub or staging site, disconnect the installed domain controller, and then ship the computer to the remote site, you are disconnecting a viable domain controller from the replication topology.
    For more and detail information, please refer to:

  • Best practice for multi-language content in common areas

    I've got a site with some text in header/footer/nav that needs to be translated between an English and Spanish site, which use the same design. My intention was to set up all the text as content to facilitate. However, if I use a standard dialog with the component's path set to a child of the current page node, I would need to re-enter the text on every page. If I use a design dialog, or a standard dialog with the component's path set absolutely, the Engilsh and Spanish sites will share the same text. If I use a standard dialog with the component's path set relatively (eg path="../../jcr:content/myPath"), the pages using the component would all need to be at the same level of the hierarchy.
    It appears that the Geometrixx demo doesn't address this situation, and leaves copy in English. Is there a best practice for this scenario?

    I'm finding that something to the effect of <cq:include path="<%= strCommonContentPath + "codeEntry" %>" resourceType ...
    works fine for most components, but not for parsys, or a component containing a parsys. When I attempt that, I get a JS error that says "design.path is null or not an object". Is there a way around this?
