Best Practice for Hyperion Planning : Essbase or Dataform for Adhoc Analysi

Hi,
with Hyperion Planning, you are able to start an Adhoc Analysis from an Hyperion Planning Dataform or from an Essbase cube?
What is the best way / pro / contra ? thanks in advance
.... I 've juste notice that when you delete the dataform the Retrieve doesn't work anymore :-( .... and with Essbase you get some "un-useful" dimension as HSP_Value

xavier

A couple of other things that go with Planning as the data source:
1) You have access to all of the non-Essbase data -- think SmartLists, text (okay, it's there now in Essbase, but not from Planning applications) fields, supporting detail, etc. If you want users to see that relationally stored data, the only other way to get it in Excel is to run a Financial Reports report into Excel (or hack the tables and write SQL to pull the stuff -- did that pre 11x and it's too much work).
2) There's a performance hit when going against Planning, just like there is when Planning is the data source in Financial Reports.
Using a form to limit dimensionality - isn't that what SmartSlices are for? I guess it's another way to get to the same place. Although you have to administer the SmartSlices, I would imagine they would break less often than a form might. Having said that, once built, how often do you delete a form?
It's really nice that ad-hoc analysis from forms are now possible, but I've always thought of it as nice feature to have alongside data entry, never as the primary path into Essbase analysis.
Just my $0.02.

  • How to find maximum number of users we can assign for Hyperion Planning.

    HI,
How to find maximum number of users we can assign for Hyperion Planning.i.e., how to find license limit in hyperion planning 11.1.2.1.
In Essbase propreties, the system is showing maximum planning users could be 65535.
what would be the number for concurrent scenario?
    Thanks

The number of users would be based on your license agreement with Oracle, the system is not aware of your license agreement so it is up to you to stick to it.

  • Computer based training (CBT) for Hyperion Planning

We would like to know is there any computer based training (CBT) for Hyperion Planning that can be delivered to end users either in DVD video format or CDROM interactive format? We have checked with Oracle and they do not provide such training material except for formal classroom training offered by Oracle University.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
As you say Oracle don't provide any such training, Hyperion used to provide some CBT packages for end users but that was a while back and before they were bought out by Oracle.
I think your best best would be try to search on the web for any 3rd party training companies who deal with Hyperion, I am not sure if there will be that many dealing with CBT though.

Thanks John for your advice. I am searching on this matter too but just want to know if there are some reference used by some other Hyperion users.

  • Why do we use port no. 11333 for Hyperion planning?

Why do we use port no. 11333 for Hyperion planning Metadata Load through ODI?

What more do you need to know, when you deploy planning you will see that there is a "Java RMI Registry" service/process, this runs on port 13333. The planning adaptor communicates with the RMI registry and that then communicates with planning. If you need to know more then search for "Java RMI" on the internet.

    Hi Prabha,
Can you tell which version of Planning you are running on?
Go to the below link, download the support matrix for the version you are on and then verify support for Client/Server platforms.

Did any one find the documentation on @Hsp functions (like @HspAddPageCombination (),@HspConcat (),@HspCreateCDFSession ,@HspCreateEssbaseServerFile (),@HspDateToString (),@HspGetFileName ()) available in EAS for planning applications?

  • Hyperion Planning vs Oracle Financial for departmental budgets

    Hello,
I was wondering what the consensus is between using Oracle Financials vs. Hyperion Planning for variance analysis purposes.
My contention is that HP is a best-in-breed budgeting/planning tool and should be used to house our departmental budgets/forecasts and that actuals should be fed from Oracle Financials (G/L) to Hyperion Planning for variance anlaysis purposes. Some of my piers disagree. They feel the budgeting/forecating data should be pushed to Oracle Financials for variance analysis purpose. They claim it will be easier to provide drill-back capability into the ledger to find the answer to their variances.
I really couldn't disagree more - to me the analytical capability of HP trumps any drill-back capability provided by Oracle Financials. In addition, if we use an ETL tool like FDM to feed actuals from Oracle into HP, can't I drill back to the transactional data (actuals) via FDM? In addition, since we budget at a summary account level, how can you push summary planning data in HP to detailed transactional accounts in the G/L - pushing "one to many" doesn't make sense to me.
Anyway, just looking for some expert opinions on the subject. Much appreciated - Thanks

    Hi,
We are currently in the final phase of implementing Oracle Financials and Hyperion for the same purpose that you have described in your post. We use Oracle Financials to record actuals and then transfer it to Hyperion under the scenario 'Actual'. While the budget/forecast data in only entered/saved in Hyperion. There are several financial reports for variances that are generated out of Hyperion. So far, this arrangement is serving us pretty well. I second your point that in Hyperion, we can easily compare summary level data. We have Hyperion reports that do variances calculations for sub-totals. In fact, we are also using HP reports for consolidated statements such as Balance sheet, Income statement etc. The actual data for these statements is coming from GL.
As for drill through functionality (from HP to sub-ledger details in financials), we are in process of implementing FDM and use it for both (1) loading data and (2) drill through.
    Hope this helps.

  • Supported/Best Practice to restore Planning application between servers

I have two servers with Hyperion Planning 9.3.1 (prod and dev) I want to copy the application called 'BFS' from Production to 'NewBFS' - Dev server.
As per our consultants they indicated to do the following:
    1. Backup the repository database containing application BFS from production
    2. Do a restore of the .bak file to 'NewBFS' database on dev server
    3. Resync orphan logins (from sql server logins and database logins)
    4. Log into Planning via the default admin user ID
    5. Go to application settings and change the URL
    6. Register the Shared Services URL
    7. Manage Database
    8. Check all boxes and click refresh
    9. Go to Shared Services and resync native directory users
However when try to log into planning with something other than 'admin' we receive an error that 'user xx is not provisioned ...'
From my db experience the user tables are either still referencing production and/or have not resynced properly.
So long story short...can I restore one Planning app to another server and if so what is the supported/best practice?
    thanks
    JTS

    HemanthK ,
This is what we do to restore one planning app from prod to test. And now it looks like it works: We are MS SQL Server so these instructions are based on SQL DB
    1. Backup the Planning Application SQL DB on Production
    2. Stop the Shared Services and Planning Services on Development
    3. Restore the Production Planning App SQL DB
    4. Reset orphan logins (SQL script is available at other sites, just google Reset orphan users SQL)
    5. Restart the Shared Service first then Planning Service on Development
    6. Log in development as default admin to Planning, go to the new app, choose Manage Application Settings
    7. Run the script John had indicated c:\Hyperion\Planning\bin>Updateusers.cm servername adminname adminpassword applicationname (no dashes before each parameter)
    8. Go to planning as admin again, choose a form and choose assign access, choose add access, choose migrate identities. Here is a good self-check to see that the users are only the users from development box
    9. finally go to manage databases in planning, choose refresh database and security
    10. choose manage security filters it should now reflect only development users
    11. login as a development user into planning to ensure correct security/user rights...
You should now be able to access the application on the development box.

  • Best Practices Data Extract from Essbase

    Hi there,
I have been looking for information on Best Practices to extract data from Essbase (E).
Using MDX I initially wanted to bulk extract data from E but apparently the process was never ending.
As a 2d choice, I went for a simulation of an interactive interaction and got ODI generating MDX queries requesting smaller data sets.
At the moment more than 2000 mdx queries are generated and sequentially sent to E. I takes some times ....
Has anyone be using other approaches ?
    Awaiting reaction.
    regards

What method are you using to extract, what version are you on including patch

  • Best practice - which server OS should I use for Exchange 2010 install

We currently have 2 exchange 2007 boxes running Server 2003. the plan is to upgrade to exchange 2010 (I'd prefer 2013 but the powers that be want 2010), and I have been asked to follow Microsoft best practice. The problem is I can't find anything to point
me in the direction of the recommended server OS, I can find ones it will work on but nothing to say Microsoft recommend this...
We have licenses for Server 2008, 2008 R2 and 2012 available, which one should I advise is the Microsoft recommendation?

    Thanks Andy,
So is there no actual best practice recommendation for a server OS to run Exchange 2010 on? I agree that 2012 would be the one to go for, but the people making the decision on how we do this want reasons, and as they don't really have a lot of technical
understanding I need to be able to go to them with "Use Server 20xx because it's Microsoft best practice".
If there isn't a best practice recommendation I will try the longer support life and more options for high availability with 2012.
Well, you probably wont find a "best practice" as much as a "its supported" stance from Micorosoft.
As in all these things, there may be other reasons a business chooses to use 2008 over 2012 etc...

  • Agents for Hyperion Planning Integration

    Hi all,
my customer is performing an integration between E-Biz and Hyperion Planning
    * From E-Biz to Hyp Planning (using Planning KMs for dimensions and Essbase KMs for data)
    * From Hyp PLanning to E-Biz (using Essbase KMs for data extract and Oracle KMs for loading into GL Interface Table)
    Server's architecture is as follows:
    * Planning Server
    * Essbase Server
    * E-Biz Server
We will place an ODI agent at Essbase Server (data extract requirement). This agent will be also used for data load into Essbase.
would it be recommended to have another agent at Planning server for running dimensions load into the Planning application?
    Thanks in advance

I don't usually install an agent on the essbase and planning server, usually the agent is on the essbase server. I have not really seen any performance issues for loading metadata into planning, planning metadata is relatively small anyway.
    Cheers

Below Solution  as per doc ---
    1. Run the installation for the HSF Web Application component on the Foundation server where weblogic is for HSF Server.
(Be sure the HSF Web Application component is also installed on the the HSF Server, if separate from the Foundation server as well.)
    2. Clean up any failed deployments in the WebLogic Console by deleting the HSFWeb Server from WL Admn
    3. Configure the new component on Foundation (target server).

  • Best practice implementation. What are the steps for this?.

We had an upgrade from CRM 4 to 7 undertaken by some outfit (name deleted). After the upgrade was complete it would look as though the comapny carried on using the GUI interface rather than the WebUI interface, mainly because that's how CRM 4 worked. Now they would like to use the WebUI interface of CRM 7, as the GUI interface is no longer supported, but are receiving a number of errors when using certain features of teh WebUI. It would look as though a lot of config is missing, especially in the UI Framework area. I can only assume that whichever company performed the upgarde simply skipped this section when upgrading.
I assume that I could download the best practice install/upgrade (?) and then just execute the section regarding the UI Framework, if such a section exists. bearing in mind that there seems to be a lot of config missing in the UI Framework section, would you recommend the course of action that I have mentioned?.
Our WebUI Interaction centre is giving errors when we go in and I have been informed that I need to complete the config for:
Customer Relationship Management->UI Framework->UI Framework Definition->Maintain Runtime Framework Profile
But as I mentioned, there are lots of other sections in the UI Framework area that are empty and hence the suggestion I made above. Hopwever, I would specifically be interested to hear from anyone who can tell me what the entries are in the view table BSPWDV_RF_PROF_C and possibly the table BSPWDV_CTRL_REPL and BSPWDV_DEF_CC.
I know this only completes part of the config, but it might be enough so that the WebUI IC can be viewed.
On another subject, I have just come into this company and if I wanted to see what had been installed how do I go about that. for example, if I wanted to know if there had been an upgrade from 4 to 7 for a particular Industry solution, where do I check this?.
    Jason

I have been through the following steps:
    Entered this URL http://help.sap.com/bp/initial/index.htm
    Clicked on 'Cross-industry Packages'
    Clicked on 'CRM'
    Clicked on 'Englilsh'
Then the following page is displayed:
    http://help.sap.com/bp_crm70/CRM_DE/HTML/index.htm displayed
But now what?. How do I get the Best practice instructions for a CRM implemenation?.
    Jason
