Best practice for this project?

Hello,
Total n00b here, so please bare with me!
I'm working on one of my first AE projects getting my feet wet as well as following along with some books and Lynda.com training vids, but I thought I'd post here as well.
The project I'm working on is nothing more than a glorified slideshow. Basically, it consists of a 30 different still images (each image is different). For each still, there is a basic title sequence (fades in/out), then the still fades in, there's a pan/zoom, then fades out, then on to the next one. Total time per still is 30-40 seconds. Finally, there will be a single audio track playing over the full piece. Like I said, pretty simple.
What I'm wondering is, what's the best way to set this up. Should each still's sequence be it's own composition and then nest each composition within a master composition, should this all be done in a single composition, etc.?
Basically, I'm curious as to how to best deal with having this all reviewed, having to make changes, etc. For example, once I put the initial piece together, I'll render out a version for review. If I have to make a change to one of the sequences, is there a way to deal with this so I don't have to spend the time rendering the entire job out again, just for a short 1 second change to 1 sequence within the entire job? What's the best way to deal with this?
I'd love to hear what suggestions people may have!?
Thanks!
Kristin.

My personal approach would be just one comp, one text layer, and one black solid layer under the text and on top of the images to control the fading (I got the impression you want to go blank, rather than transition directly from one image to another).
Create a new solid, set it to your BG color, and make it "comp size".
Use the text tool and type your first title.
Select them both and use the align window to center your text horz and vert (actually your centering it to the solid, which happens to be the size of your comp)
Set up opacity fades on your title, and BG solid to reveal the 1st image, and set it up to pan and scan, then fade the BG solid back up.
Now go to where you want to fade up the next title, and open the text properties until you see Source Text, and enable keyframing.
Drag the new created square "hold" keyframe to the begining of time, then select all the text and change it to your 2nd title.
Then copy and paste your fade keyframes, tweak as needed, and repeat...
I prefer this approach as it keeps everything in one comp where you can see it (handy for syncing to your music layer), and you dont have a bunch of duplicate title layers that are essentially the same thing.
As for needing to change just a small part of it, depends on your finally delivery format. If you are giving them one long file, and just need to change a small part in the middle, make the change, then import your last rendered animation (best way to import is to drag the file from an OS browser window to the AE project window).
Bring the old anim into your comp as the top layer, so AE doesnt have think much about constructing each frame, then go to the beginning of the part you have changed, and with this cover layer selected "ctrl shift D" to split the layer. Then move to the end of your fixed portion and with the 2nd half of you cover layer selected, "alt [" which will jump the beginning of the cover to there, so AE only has to deeply contemplate the frames that you have changed. Although with this project it shouldnt take long to render any how.
Well, thats my two cents, or more like a buck thirty five.

  • Best practice for responsive projects

Does anyone have tips on best practices for responsive project?
I understand that 3 different layouts can be created. What happens if a learner is not using one of the 3 devices that were set up in a responsive project, and their screen size is different from any of those

    Jay,
Dr. Pooja Jaisingh offered very valuable tips for good practice in responsive design last week in her webinar. 'Do's and Don'ts of creating Responsive Projects with Captivate 8'. I don't see the recording yet On Demand, but keep an eye on it.
Did you test a responsive project with F11 (Preview in Browser)? You will be able to change the resolution of the browser window and see that the content, if well designed (you can have absolute positioning, size as well) will move, shrink to adapt. The break points (3 devices) allow you to make more invasive changes at those points: dragging some objects out of the stage in the scratch area because they take up too much space for phones is one example. Or replacing a big screenshot with many details by a zoomed in detail screenshot for the mobile breakpoint. That is my way of explaining, responsive is not just have the three layouts for devices, it is also adapting between those breakpoints.

  • What’s the best practice for this scenario?

    Hi,
My users want the ability to change the WHERE and/or ORDER BY clause at runtime. They may define user preferences on each screen ( which is bind to a view object). They want to see the same records based on WHERE/ORDER BY defined on the last visit. That is why I keep the users preferences and load the screen based on that, using :
    View.setWhereClause(...);
    View.setOrderByClause(...);
    View.executeQuery();
This works good when only one user working with the application but faced low performance when more than one user working with the application.
What are the points to increase the performance and what is the best practice for this scenario?
Thanks for your help in advance.

    Sung,
I am talking only about 2 users in my testing. I am sure i missed something but could not recognize that.
This page is my custom query page including a tag to instantiate app module in stateful mode at the top <jbo:ApplicationModule..> and a tag to instantiate data source <jbo:Datasource...> and release tag at the bottom <jbo:ReleasePageResources..> and some java code in the middle(body). The java code constructed the query statement and then fires the query to set the view object based on the query statement using the above methods.
So, I am facing very slow performance(speed) when two clients load this page at the same time. Looks like the entire application locks for others when one client load this page and fire the query. i realized the battle neck is where executeQuery() is executing.
    what do you think.
Thanks in advance for your comments.

  • User Authorization, best practices for this custom application requirement?

    JDeveloper 12c (12.1.2)
We want to use external LDAP (active directory) with ADF security to authenticate and authorize users.
One of our custom application requirements is that there is a single page with many interactive components. It has probably about 15 tables and each table would need to have the following buttons (or similar components):
    - delete: (if certain row is selected) to delete it
    - edit: (if certain row is selected) takes user to 'edit page' where changes can be made
    - create: to create new record for this particular VO (table)
So let's say that would be 3 x 15 = 45 different actions that single user can possibly perform. Not all users have same 'powers' ie some users can only edit CERTAIN tables, and delete from one or two. Most users can create and edit most VOs etc
Back when this application was originally developed using (I believe) 10g JDeveloper with UIX, the way it was done is that we maintained a table in database with 'user credentials' as Y or N flags.
    For example: DEL_VO1, EDIT_VO1, ADD_VO1....
So when user is authenticated we would then pull all these credentials from the DB table and load them into the session variables. Then we would use EL to render or not render certain buttons on the page. For example: rendered="#{sessionScope.appDelVo1 == 'Y'}"
Moving forward into latest ADF technology, what would be the best practice to achieve described functionality?

    Hi,
ADF BC could have permissions added to the entity level (includes remove and update). So you can create permissions for the entity (as it doesn't matter for data security how data is accessed. If as a user you are nit allowed to change a database table then this is for tables and forms). You can then use EL to check the permission, thus no need to keep the privileges in the database.
If a user is allowed to update an entity then you can check this using EL in the UI

  • What is the best practice for this?

    Hi,
I have a huge package, let's say including 100 procedures.
These procedures(with package name qualifier) are called all around the application. Now i want to divide it to 5 packages each one including 20 procedures.
What is the best practice to do this with minimum changes in the application?

First step before doing anything with OD is to make certain that local DNS services are correct.  To verify that, launch Terminal.app from Applications > Utilities on the test server, and issue the following harmless, diagnostic command:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
You'll need to enter your administrative password for the sudo to be accepted.
If the output from that command reports no changes are required, then an export from the original OD and an import into the test system would be typical for testing, if you trust what's in the original OD.

  • Best methods for this project

    Hi
I have this to create for a client.
    http://www.qwerty-design.co.uk/bensons/
If you click on the London area (bottom right if you're not from the UK) and click the map will zoom to reveal two markers. When these are rollover they reveal store names.
    Can I ask:
    1. I have 130 stores to show all over the country, what would be the best way of feeding the text into flash? would it be to use XML or just an external text file for each store?
    2. I am currently using a invisible button to create the click for the zoom, is this the way you guys would do this?
Can you recommend any other tips for creating this.
    Thanks
    Ricky55

Not that you asked for this advice, but that is what you get when you post for free help! Please take it in the sense of friendly critique that I mean it.
As the pins fade in I can see the "steel" through the red ball at top. Because you are using and alpha fade the red ball's alpha is partial and the artwork shows through. Not a biggie, but to me it looks unprofessional and clunky.
And I agree that XML will be the way to go if it is something that needs to be updated even a few times.

  • FAQ: Are there best practices for building projects within the 20 page/state limit?

The 20 page/state limit in Flash Catalyst is there to prevent Catalyst (and your finished application) from running slowly. You can however build efficient applications that have more than 20 states by using custom components. Custom components can contain states as well; so by creating an app that has several states, and using custom components that have states, you can get more unique views of your app while keeping it efficiently built.
    Try this:
    1. Select some of your arwork where you need more states. Right click and choose "Convert to Custom Component"
    2. Double-click to edit the custom component. Note that you can now create states in the custom component. Try creating a few states here.
    3. To exit editing the component, double click a blank area on the artboard.
    4. If you try creating an "On click transition to state" interaction now you will see that you can choose from both the states of the application as well as the states of the custom component.

For some projects this can be an inconvenient workaround, and for others it can really clean things up by reducing complexity. If you have several top-level pages in your app that are completely different than other pages (for example, they don't share any objects with the other states) than pushing these down into a custom component makes things a lot more manageable in Catalyst. The layers panel, for example, shows all objects across all states-- this is useful when your states share many objects. If however, your states don't share a lot of objects, the layers panel can get a bit unmanageable. Refactoring into a custom component allows you to fix this by grouping content into a container.

  • Best Practice for documenting projects BW

    Hi people.
We are studing at the moment a way of documenting new developments of applications of SAP BW.
Is there a standard of documentation recommended by SAP, or a good practice that I use to create and document objects developed in SAP BW.
    Can someone help me?

Hi Marques, From my experience this varies from one costumer to another. Everywhere they have different practices, formats of documents, tools, habits, etc.
What I found very useful in BW is using of meta data repository part of TA RSA1. You can easily get some nice screen shots like data flows. Moreover in BW 7.x you have possibility to get documentation of particular transformations, DTPs etc. This can be done when you select particular object via left click of mouse and then hit F1 key.

  • Best Practices for multiple authors using single project?

We are having many issues, particularly with moving, renaming, and multiple check out warnings.  We have a single project with many authors and it seems like RH is not designed to work that way. There is an article in the RH devnet-archive in an article entitled "Sharing RoboHelp Project Among Multiple Authors" that says"
"At first there may be the temptation to let every author work on every file in a project.  This is certainly not a best practice. Regardless of source contraol, it is always best to designate certain authors as owning certain content-related sections, folders, or topics within a project -particulary at the folder level."
This statement, and our experience seems to indicate that RH is not a true CMS as we had envisioned.  What are the best practices for this scenario to avoid stepping on each others toes and having problems with source control.

I have moved this to the source control forum for the gurus there to answer.
Meantime I must admit I read that statement the same way as you first time. However, on rereading I think what the author is saying is not that what you want cannot be done, rather it is best practice to guide authors to work in discrete areas.
I will leave it to the author or another guru to give you a more complete answer.

  • Best practice for integrating a 3 point metro-e in to our network.

    Hello,
We have just started to integrate a new 3 point metro-e wan connection to our main school office. We are moving from point to point T-1?s to 10 MB metro-e. At the main office we have a 50 MB going out to 3 other sites at 10 MB each. For two of the remote sites we have purchase new routers ? which should be straight up configurations. We are having an issue connecting the main office with the 3rd site.
At the main office we have a Catalyst 4006 and at the 3rd site we are trying to connect to a catalyst 4503.
I have attached configurations from both the main office and 3rd remote site as well as a basic diagram of how everything physically connects. These configurations are not working ? we feel that it is a gateway type problem ? but have reached no great solutions. We have tried posting to a different forum ? but so far unable to find the a solution that helps.
The problem I am having is on the remote side. I can reach the remote catalyst from the main site, but I cannot reach the devices on the other side of the remote catalyst however the remote catalyst can see devices on it's side as well as devices at the main site.
We have also tried trunking the ports on both sides and using encapsulation dot10q ? but when we do this the 3rd site is able to pick up a DHCP address from the main office ? and we do not feel that is correct. But it works ? is this not causing a large broad cast domain?
If you have any questions or need further configuration data please let me know.
The previous connection was a T1 connection through a 2620 but this is not compatible with metro-e so we are trying to connect directly through the catalysts.
The other two connection points will be connecting through cisco routers that are compatible with metro-e so i don't think I'll have problems with those sites.
Any and all help is greatly welcome ? as this is our 1st metro e project and want to make sure we are following best practices for this type of integration.
Thank you in advance for your help.
    Jeff

Jeff, form your config it seems you main site and remote site are not adjacent in eigrp.
Try adding a network statement for the 171.0 link and form a neighbourship between main and remote site for the L3 routing to work.
Upon this you should be able to reach the remote site hosts.

  • What is best practice for conditional rendering?

i have a set of radio buttons that conditionally render another set, which in turn conditionally render a 3rd set.
i am doing this by using a valueChangeListener on an h:selectOneRadio
when i click yes on the 1st set it renders the 2nd set.
when i click yes on the 2nd set it renders the 3rd set.
when i click no on the 1st set now it correctly removes the 2nd & 3rd sets, the method also nulls the values.
when i click yes on the 1st set, it renders the 2nd set with the old values even though they were nulled. and i can see in the debugger they are still null.
so there seems to be an issue updating the model, but i dont know what that issue is. im sure it just has something to do with the way i am trying this conditional render. please see below for my first field and my valueChangeListener method.
any help with what is a best practice for this scenario would be greatly appreciated.

Similar issue is covered and explained here: [http://balusc.blogspot.com/2007/10/populate-child-menus.html]. Not sure if it solves your problem as you're using ajax4jsf whereas I don't, but it might give new insights. To the point you might need to bind the component(s) and use setValue(null) or setSubmittedValue(null).

  • Best practice for copying help...

I am creating a webhelp project to be accessed from an internal homegrown intranet app(by clicking on a help button within the app it fires up the help screens in a new window).... I published the help out to a network share however now in testing opening this from my app it takes a long time to fire up the new window...
Is there a best practice for this type of scenario?? Do I need a way to copy the help project down locally for each user? If so what is the best technique being that they are accessing the help in a webapp not a winapp?
    Thanks!

    Hi there
Typically you leave WebHelp on a server and access it from wherever. That's the beauty of it.
You might begin by creating a simple shortcut or hyperlink from your desktop to open the help. Check the time it takes. If it opens really fast, you know there is an issue to be addressed with the way your application is opening it.

  • Best practices for submitting CF data to an AJAX page?

    Hi everyone,
I've got a project I'm working on for work and have hit a
    little problem.
I am extracting data from my database and then after each
piece of data (just numbers, usually 10 chunks of numbers), I tack
a "|" onto the end of each number. Then, I output the data to the
page. Back on my AJAX enabled page, I get the "responseText" from
that page, and then split it up using javascript and the
    pre-inserted "|".
This seems to work fine, but it is quite a bit more messy.
Also, It would really, really be nice to be able to do sorting and
various other operations on the data with javascript instead of
having to rely on CF's icky code logic.
Can someone please enlighten me as to best practices for this
type of thing? I get the suspicion that I'll probably be using XML
    somehow, but I'd your opinion.
    Thanks!

  • Best Practices for zVM/SLES10/zDB2 environment for dialog instances.

Hi,  I am a zSeries system programmer who has just completed an IBM led Proof of Concept which demonstrated the viability of running SAP instances on SUSE SLES10 Linux booted in zVM guests and accessing zDB2 data via hipersockets. Before we build a Linux infrastructure using the 62 IFLs we just procured, we are wondering if any best practices for this environment have been developed as an OSS note or something else by SAP.    Below you will find an email which was sent and responded to by IBM and Novell on these topics...
"As you may know, Home Depot has embarked on an IBM led proof of concept using SUSE SLES10 running in zVM guests on IBM zSeries hardware to host SAP server instances.  The Home Depot IT organization is currently in the midst of a large scale push to modernize our merchandising and people systems on SAP platforms.  The zVM/SUSE/SAP POC is part of that effort, as is a parallel POC of an Intel Blade/Red Hat/SAP platform.  For our production financial systems we now use a pSeries/AIX/SAP platform.
So far in the zVM/SUSE/SAP POC, we have been able to create four zVM LPARS on IBM z9 hardware, create twelve zVM guests on those LPARS, boot SLES10 in those guests, install and run SAP instances in those guests using hipersockets for access to our DB2 SAP databases running on zOS, and direct user workloads to the SAP instances with good results.  We have also successfully developed cloning scripts that have made it possible to create new SLES10 instances, configured and ready for SAP installs, in about 10 seconds using FLASHCOPY and IBM DASD.
I am writing in the hope that you can direct us to technical resources at IBM/Novell/SAP who may be able to field a few questions that have arisen.  In our discussions about optimization of the zVM/SUSE/SAP platform, we wondered if any wisdom about the appropriateness of and support for using zVM capabilities to virtualize SAP has ever been developed or any best practices drafted.  Attached you will find an IBM Redbook and a PowerPoint presentation which describes the use of the zVM discontiguous shared segments and the zVM named saved system features for the sharing of reentrant code and other  elements of Linux and its applications, thereby conserving storage and disk resources allocated to guest machines.   The specific question of the hour is, can any SAP code be handled similarly?  Have specific SAP elements eligible for this treatment been identified?
I've searched the SUSE Knowledgebase for articles on this topic to no avail.  Any similar techniques that might help us reduce the total cost of ownership of a zVM/SUSE/SAP platform as we compare it to Intel Blade/Red Hat/SAP and pSeries/AIX/SAP platforms are of great interest as we approach the end of our POC.  Can you help?
Greg McKelvey is a Client I/T Architect at IBM.  He found the attached IBM documents and could give a fuller account of our POC.  Pat Downs, IBM zSeries IT Architect, has also worked to guide our POC. Akshay Rao, IBM Systems IT Specialist - Linux | Virtualization | SOA, is acting as project manager for the POC.  Jim Hawkins is the Home Depot Architect directing the POC.  I've CC:ed their email addresses.  I am sure they would be pleased to hear from you if there are the likely questions about what the heck I am asking about here.  And while writing, I thought of yet another question that I hoping somebody at SAP might weigh in on; are there any performance or operational benefits to using Linux LVM to apportion disk to filesystems vs. using zVM to create appropriately sized minidisks for filesystems without LVM getting involved?"
As you can see, implementation questions need to be resolved.  We have heard from Novell that the SLES10 Kernel and other SUSE artifacts can reside in memory and be shared by multiple operating system images.  Does SAP support this configuration?  Also, has SAP identified SAP components which are eligible for similar treatment?  We would like to make sure that any decisions we make about the SAP platforms we are building will be supportable.  Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.  I will supply the documents referenced above if they are not known to any answerer.  Thanks,  Al Brasher 770-433-8211 x11895 [email protected]

    Hello AL ,
first, let me welcome you on board,  I am sure you won't be disapointed with your choice to run SAP on ZOS.
    as for your questions,
it wan't easy to find them in this long post , so i suggest you take the time to write a short summary that contains a very short list of questions.
    as for answers.
here are a few usefull sources of information :
    1. the sap on db2 for Z/os sdn page :
    SAP on DB2 for z/OS
in it you can find 2 relevant docs :
    a. best practices for ...
    b. database administration for db2 udb for z/os .
this second publication is excellent , apart from db2 specific info , it contains information on all the components of the sap on db2 for z/os like zlinux,z/vm and so on ...
    2. I can see that you are already familiar with the ibm redbooks , but it seems that you haven't taken the time to get the most out of that resource.
from you post it is clear that you have found one usefull publication , but I know there are several.
    3. a few months ago I wrote a short post on a similar subject ,
I'm sure its not exactly what you are looking for at this moment , but its a good start , and with some patience you may be able to get some answers.
    here's a link

    good luck.
