  • Best practice for distributing/releasing J2EE applications.

    Hi All,
    We are developing a J2EE application and would like some information on the best
    practices to be followed for distributing/releasing J2EE applications, in general.
    In particular, the dilemma we have is centered around the generation of stub, skeleton
    and additional classes for the application.
    Most App. Servers can generate the required classes while deploying the EJBs in the
    application i.e. at install time. While some ( BEA Weblogic and IBM Websphere are
    two that we are aware of ) allow these classes to be generated before the installation
    time and the .ear file containing the additional classes is the one that is uploaded.
    For instance, say we have assembled the application "myapp.ear" . There are two ways
    in which the classes can be generated. The first is using 'ejbc' ( assume we are
    using BEA Weblogic ), which generates the stub, skeleton and additional classes for
    the application and returns the file, say, "Deployable_myapp.ear" containing all
    the necessary classes and files. This file is the one that is then installed. The
    other option is to install the file "myapp.ear" and let the Weblogic App. server
    itself, generate the required classes at the installation time.
    If the first way, of 'pre-generating' the stubs is followed, does it require us to
    separately generate the stubs for each versions of the App. Server that we support
    ? i.e. if we generate a deployable file having the required classes using the 'ejbc'
    of Weblogic Ver5.1, can the same file be installed on Weblogic Ver6.1 or do we
    have to generate a separate file?
    If the second method, of 'install-time-generation' of stubs is used, what is the
    nature/magnitude of the risk that we are taking in terms of the failure of the installation
    Any links to useful resources as well as comments/suggestions will be appreciated.
    TIA
    Regards,
    Aasif

    Its much easier to distribute schema/data from an older version to a newer one than the other way around. Nearly all SQL Server deployment features supports database version upgrade, and these include the "Copy Database" wizard, BACKUP/RESTORE,
    detach/attach, script generation, Microsoft Sync framework, and a few others.
    EVEN if you just want to distribute schemas, you may want to distribute the entire database, and then truncate the tables to purge data.
    Backing up and restoring your database is by far the most RELIABLE method of distributing it, but it may not be pratical in some cases because you'll need to generate a new backup every time a schema change occurs, but not if you already have an automated
    backup/maintenance routine in your environment.
    As an alternative, you can Copy Database functionality in SSMS, although it may present itself unstable in some situations, specially if you are distributing across multiple subnets and/or domains. It will also require you to purge data if/when applicable.
    Another option is to detach your database, copy its files, and then attach them in both the source and destination instances. It will generate downtime for your detached databases, so there are better methods for distribution available.
    And then there is the previously mentioned method of generating scripts for schema, and then using an INSERT statement or the import data wizard available in SSMS (which is very practical and implements a SSIS package internally that can be saved for repeated
    executions). Works fine, not as practical as the other options, but is the best way for distributing databases when their version is being downgraded.
    With all this said, there is no "best practice" for this. There are multiple features, each offering their own advantages and downfalls which allow them to align to different business requirements.

  • Best practice for oracle 10.2 RAC with ASM

    Did any one tried/installed Oracle 10.2 RAC with ASM and CRS ?
    What is the best practice?
    1. separate home for CRS, ASM and Oracle Database?
    2. separate home for CRS and same home for ASM and Oracle Darabase?
    we set up the test environment with separate CRS, ASM and Oracle database homes, but we have tons of issues with the listener, spfile and tnsnames.ora files. So, seeking advise from the gurus who implimeted/tested the same ?

    I am getting ready to install the 10gR2 database software (10gR2 Clusterware was just installed ) and I want to have a home for ASM and another for database as you suggest. I have been told that 10gR2 was to have a smaller set of binaries that can be used for the ASM home ... but I am not sure how I go about installing it. The first look at the installer does not seem to make it obvious...Is it a custom build option?

  • Best Practices for directory structure Grid (standalone server) + DB

    I want to install Oracle Database and Oracle Grid Infrastructure for a standalone server for ASM and Oracle Restart. I understand that they need to be installed in different folders with different access rights. But how it is better for making?
    In documentation "Oracle® Database Quick Installation Guide 11g Release 2 (11.2) for Linux x86-64" anything specific it is not written. Here exposures from the documentation with examples. Such examples only confuse me.
    for oracle
    # mkdir-p/u01/app/
    # chown-R oracle:oinstall/u01/app/
    # chmod-R 775/u01/app/
    for grid
    $ ORACLE_HOME=/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/grid
    $ export ORACLE_HOME
    ORACLE_HOME =/u01/app/11.2.0/grid; export ORACLE_HOME
    I made so - db_1 for Grid db_2 for DB:
    /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1 - for Grid
    /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_2 - for DB
    But I have doubts that so will be correct. I can not understand what permissions on what folder to give.
    Questions:
    1) What to create structure of folders for installation DB + Grid?
    2) What permissions at users should be in this structure?

    HI!

  • Oracle Client 11g Release 2 silent installation.

    Hi, I try to make a silent installation of oracle client 11g release 2 for windows 7 enterprise edition.
    I'm familiar with the response file, and how to create this in earlyer versions.
    But the "-record -destinationFile <filepath>" switch do not work, and when I run "setup -help" the -record switch is gone.
    How do you create a response file with 11g release 2?
    Best regards
    Lansti

    Hey Hans - We shouldn't have to read the manual each time a new installer comes out...why would there be a need to constantly redo how the installers works from a general standpoint (like -record)?? Stupid doesn't even begin to describe it.

  • Oracle 11g R2 Grid Infrastructure Installation stuck on 65%

    Dear All,
    I am in process of installing Oracle 11g R2 Grid Infrastructure on 2-node virtual RAC. All went very well until the Grid Installation stuck on 65%. It is saying copying file on remote node ('Copying Oracle Home '/u01/app/11.2.0/grid' to remote nodes 'cxm-vl-rman02'). From the logs it is difficult to figure out where the bottlenecks lies. Have anyone of you encounter similar situation before? I can attach oraInventory logs as well if you want to have a look at that. Please let me know if you find any pointer or clue of this problem.
    Many Thanks
    Nukesh

    No nothing was being copied, the /u01/app/11.2.0/grid directory was empty and nothing was adding to the log or err files.
    Actually I found/resolved the problem and forgot about this post.
    It happens that in staging my server, iptables was enabled which stopped the progress.
    I had to issue 'service iptables stop' and 'chkconfig iptables off' AND REBOOT ALL NODES.
    Simply stopping the service allowed the installer to continue, but eventually the root.sh script has problems. Rebooting both nodes resolved the issue.
    Thanks

  • Best Practice for CQ Updates in complex installations (clustering, replication)?

    Hi everybody,
    we are planning a production setup of CQ 5.5 with an authoring cluster replicating to 4 publisher instances. We were wondering what the best update process looks like in a scenario like this. Let's say, we need to install the latest CQ 5 Update - which we actually have to -:
    Do we need to do this on every single instance, or can replication be utilized to distribute updates?
    If updating a cluster - same question: one instance at a time? Just one, and the cluster does the rest?
    The question is really: can update packages (official or custom) be automatically distributed to multiple instances? If yes, is there a "best practice" way to do this?
    Thanks for any help on this!
    Henning

    Hi Henning,
    The CQ5.5 servicepacks are distributed as CRX packages. You can replicate these packages and on the publishs they are unpacked and installed.
    In a cluster the situation is different: You have only 1 repository. So when you have installed the servicepack on one node, the new versions of bundles and other stuff is unpacked to the repository (most likely to /libs). Then the magic (essentially the JcrInstaller) takes care, that the bundles are extracted to started.
    I would not recommend to activate the service pack in a production environment, because then all publishs will be updated the same time. And as a restart is required, you might encounter downtimes. Of course you can make it work when you play with the replication agents :-)
    cheers,
    Jörg

  • Search for ABAP Webdynpro Best practice or/and Evaluation grid

    Hi Gurus,
    Managers or Team Leaders are facing of the development of SAP application on the web. Functional people propose to business people Web applications.  I'm searching for Best practice for Web Dynpro ABAP Development. We use SAP Netweaver 7.0 and an SAP ECC 6.0 SP4.
    We are facing of claims about Webdynpro response time. The business wants to have 3 sec response time and we have 20 or  25 sec.
    I want to communicate to functional people a kind of recommendation document explaining that in certain case the usage of Webdynpro will not be a benefit for the business.
    I know that the transfer of data, the complexity of the screen and also the hardware are one of the keys but I expect some advices from the SDN community.
    Thanks for your answers.
    Rgds,
    Christophe

    Hi,
    25s is a lot. I wouldn't like to use an application with response time that big. Anyway, Thomas Jung has just recently published a series of video blogs about WDA performance tools. It may help you analyzing why your web dynpro application is so slow. Here is the link to the [first part|http://enterprisegeeks.com/blog/2010/03/03/abap-freakshow-u2013-march-3-2010-wda-performance-tools-part-1/]. • Errors in Oracle 11g R2 Grid Infra Installation

    Hi all,
    I went through the steps to install Oracle 11g R2 Infrastructure on RHEL 5.2 (32-bit) in a couple of Vmware machines.
    - As I relied on the Vmwaretool for time sync, I didn't configure SNP.
    - As I don't have a DNS server, I configured the scan-rac in /etc/hosts.
    I know in production this is wrong, but for this testing env it is Ok (according to http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/11g/OracleDB11gR2RACInstallationOnOEL5UsingVMwareServer2.php)
    All the configuration went Ok and the OUI went on successfully till
    it reached to the last step: "Oracle Cluster Verification Utility" which, as expected, failed.
    It generates the following long and complicated log: http://www.ahmedbaraka.com/temp/installActions.txt
    My question is: Did all the errors in the log result only from the SNP and SCAN issues? Is there any other discovered issues?
    Thanks in advance.

    this could be just from ntp.

  • Best Practices in DB Consolidation using RAC

    Dear all
    I'm looking for recommendations on DB Consolidation using RAC.
    I mean:
    Assuming to have different serious production databases which availability is a serious requirement.
    Which is best: to have different small RACs with one DB on each, or having a big RAC and put all the DB's into it.
    - What is recommended
    - What are limitations & issues
    e.g:
    - Supported DB version (assume we can force developers to support a certain version)
    - Different Startup options (I heard this one for conslidation in an stand alone DB Server with multiple instances. Is it an issue for RAC architecture?)
    - What are challenges and how to overcome
    - When to have One RAC with multiple instances & when to have multiple RAC with one instance per RAC
    - What DB's are better to be consolidated in one RAC, and when it is best to seperate them
    And many other considerations that surely have'nt gone through my head :)
    I need a comprehensive view and need some references.
    looking forward to your kind replies
    cheers
    Mehdi Sarmadi

    Hi Mehdi,
    Which is best: to have different small RACs with one DB on each, or having a big RAC and put all the DB's into it.
    It will be better to have DB for OLTP type application seperate than the DB for DSS type appllication.This way you'll have more control over their performance.
    What is recommended
    - What are limitations & issues
    e.g:
    - Supported DB version (assume we can force developers to support a certain version)
    - Different Startup options (I heard this one for conslidation in an stand alone DB Server with multiple instances. Is it an issue for RAC architecture?)
    As far as DB version is concerned 11gR1 is the latest version and is stable also. So it is always advisable to go with the latest stable version.This will make your support from Oracle last longer.
    I didn't understand what u exactly meant by different startup options.But the startup options will remain same for RAC DB also as far as DB is cocerned.Only the additional task will be the Cluserware components startup and ASM instance (if used).
    - What are challenges and how to overcome
    - When to have One RAC with multiple instances & when to have multiple RAC with one instance per RAC
    - What DB's are better to be consolidated in one RAC, and when it is best to seperate them
    There are not any chalenges to overcome in RAC other than the pre-requistes required by it . For the requirements go through oracle docs.
    Having one node RAC doesn't make much sense other than when u have only one server and u plan to add other ones later on.You'll be able to use RAC benefits with multiple instance only.How many instances u need is a matter of observation of the type of load your aplication will have.
    For installtion docs of RAC go u can view the link below and choose appropriate option according to your OS:

    Hello Ramesh,
    you should have a look at the SAP Instguide, and if it tells you to do as your colleagues say, open a ticket to SAP and ask, whether doing it the otherw ay could have spoiled your system. Anything but an official "yes, it's ok" won't help you.
    For the other guys: have a loook at http://service.sap.com/instguides, there you can find all the guides you need.

  • User equivalence check failure in oracle10g RAC installation on solaris

    Hi,
    i am trying to install oracle clusterware on solaris10.
    when i executed clusture varification utility , user equivalence test is failed.
    each node have same username,userid,group id
    and i configured SSH also using
    exec /user/bin/ssh-agent
    /usr/bin/ssh-add after generation of rsa and dsa keys and putting this to authorization file.
    it is not asking password for ssh and scp after executing this command but again user equivalence check failed
    but after logging of and do login again to oracle user its not working. then again i have to set ssh that is
    exec /user/bin/ssh-agent
    /usr/bin/ssh-add
    wat else i have to check for this?
    can sombody help me to solve this

    $ eval 'ssh-agent'
    SSH_AUTH_SOCK=/tmp/ssh-GJAo3653/agent.3653; export SSH_AUTH_SOCK;
    SSH_AGENT_PID=3654; export SSH_AGENT_PID;
    echo Agent pid 3654;
    $ /usr/bin/ssh-add
    Could not open a connection to your authentication agent.What shell are you using?
    Back to user equivalence:
    1. Ensure that /etc/motd is empty (You can't get some text after login)
    2. Ensure that /etc/issue is empty or "Banner /etc/issue" is not set in /etc/ssh/sshd_config
    3. Ensure that you have stored short hostnames and also FQDN in your known_hosts file
    You shouldn't get this type of message: The authenticity of host 'computername (IP)' can't be established.
    RSA key fingerprint is ...
    Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)?If you got this message executes commands on both of nodes (as user oracle) as in example:
    $ ssh oracle@pc000905
    $ ssh [email protected]
    $ ssh oracle@pc026376
    $ ssh [email protected] Ensure that your RSH is setup correctly.
    (OR) In case using of RSH is prohibited in your company (my case) you can use following fake:
    a. rename existing rsh binaries (see example below)
    b. create symlinks to equivalent ssh utilities (see example below)
    c. create symlinks for ssh and rsh (faked rsh) under /usr/local/bin directory
    Note: these actions need to be done by root user.
    cd /usr/bin
    mv rsh rsh_old
    mv rcp rcp_old
    ln -s /usr/bin/ssh rsh
    ln -s /usr/bin/scp rcp
