Best practice to use Time capsule for back-up of 3 different products (MBP 15 OSX lion, MBP 13 OSX lion and MBA 13 OSX mountain lion)?. Only the MBP15 is back-up regularly.

When I want to save data of the MBA13 on mountain lion (wireless) with time capsule, hois there any best practice to perform?
After that, assuming that data are back-up, can we easily differentiate data in time capsule belonging to MBP15/13 and MBA13?

Unfortunately, Apple left off the Ethernet port....the most important port in networking....on the MBA, so your first backup of the entire Mac will need to be done using wireless.
That may take a day or two unless your MBA has a Thunderbolt port on it in which case you could add a Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter and connect the MBA to the Time Capsule for the first backup using an Ethernet cable.  It will probably only take 3-4 hours or less doing it this way.
Once you have the first complete backup done, other subsequent backups can be done using wireless since they will ony take a few minutes, on average.
Both Macs will backup to the Time Capsule using Time Machine automatically. Backups will be kept completely separate, so one Mac will normally only be able to "see" its own backups.

  • How to use time capsule for wireless back-up but not internet?

    Hello,
I have a tower and recently a laptop at work. The tower is connected to our local network with an ethernet cable and the laptop with wireless. So, the internet connection is fine for both.
I was hoping to use my time capsule to do time machine backups on my laptop. Do you have any advice on how to configure this? I do not want to use the time capsule to extend my Internet, as I believe my work I.T. would prefer to handle all access to their  network.
Perhaps there is some documentation about doing this that you could point me to? I have not been able to find it.
    Thank you for your help.

Your original question was How to use Time Capsule for wireless back-up but not Internet?
There is no reason for you to connect the tower....or anything else...using Ethernet if your goal remains that same as you stated.
If you are asking if you can backup the Tower using Ethernet, and not wireless, then you can connect the tower to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule....not the WAN port.
Yes, it appears to work without plugging into my tower.
    Correct, it will work.
I just have to select the network that it created. Of course, I have no access to the Internet while this is happening and it can not auto backup, unless I am on that wireless signal.
As I stated, that is the downside to trying to back up without an Internet connection.  You have to establish another network...and backup over that network.
If you are asking if you can stay connected to the work network while also backing up to your non-Internet "private" network, that is not possible.

  • Can i use time capsule for back up my movies and watching them with my bravia tv

can i use time capsule for back up my movies and watching them with my bravia tv.
i mean can i use this for external hard disk drive to back up my movies and watching them with tv that has a lan port or wi-fi technology.

Only if the TV is a media player.. the TC is dumb as a board router with a hard disk.. there is no DLNA which I suspect the TV requires.. you can get a player like the WDLive and it will play movie files from the TC to the TV.. remember the TC is nothing but a file store.. no servers .. no nothing.

  • Can I use Time Capsule for a server ?

    hi,
i was wondering if I can use Time Capsule for a server.
Let's say I have an ubuntu server, and I'm running some websites and web applications on it.
I would install these appications on ubuntu but then store the "file folders" of each website or application (with images, videos, etc.. ) on Airport capsule and leave only the application files on the server.
    Is this feasable ?
    Thanks
    Patrick

    Welcome to the discussions!
    +Is this feasible ?+
Feasible, yes. Practical, no...unless you are willing to put up with very slow access to files that are on the Time Capsule.
Keep in mind that the Time Capsule was designed primarily for Time Machine backups, not as a media server for quick access to data. You might want to explore other options that would allow much faster access to files when you need them.

  • Can you use time capsule for your mac and have readynas backup your pc's on the same network

Can you use time capsule for your mac and use readynas to back up your pc's on the same network

Sure, that is trivial setup.. they both have different names and IP addresses.
You should be able to use ReadyNas for TM backup but you should check the latest state of play for that.

  • Can I use Time Capsule for Time Machine and a place to put my iPhoto Library

Can I use Time Capsule for Time Machine and a place to put my iPhoto Library?

Only if you partition the Time Capsure into two partitions, one for TM and one for the iPhoto LIbrary.  But you won't be able to backup that library as it will be on the same drive as the TM backups.
It's not recommended.  An alternative solution is to get another EHD, move the library to it and run it from there. Then TM can backup both your boot drive and the working EHD drive.

  • Use Time Capsule for video...

Has anyone used Time Capsule for video streaming?  How to connect to TV if it's pre-digital?

Time Capsule is not a Media Player.. it has zero ability to stream video. It has zero ability to do anything but hold files. It will sit there and hold your video files very happily .. but the dumb as a board hard disk and TC controls can do nothing with it.
You need a media player. And you need one that is able to be hacked or is not Apple. Apple work on itunes, although it is possible to use an Apple TV in the mix if you send video to it from ipad using airplay.
If by pre-digital TV it doesn't have hdmi input, then buy yourself an older media player that has component out.. there is no point buying expensive hdmi to analogue converters. You will eventually replace the TV and will definitely want to go digital. So get an Apple TV 1 that still works from ebay. And use one of the hacking methods. This has component video and you can also get composite out of it. And it will play files stored in the network. Other non-apple players will do the same. Just find one that is older design with component still but ATV1 can still work well. I use one with a crystal acceleration card running crystalbuntu firmware.

Can i use time capsule for external h drive and also for time machine?

    Hello, vascocaco.
If I understand correctly, you're wondering if you can use your Time Capsule's internal hard disk both for Time Machine backups and as an ordinary drive. Is this your question?
You can, but Time Machine backups may take longer.
To do it, you should partition your Time Capsule's hard disk to create one volume for the backups and one for other files.

  • Can I use time capsule for tranfering entire computer.

I have a new macbook that Apple messed up on and I am having to send back. I will be getting the ne 17'macbook instead. I am hoping that if I use time capsule and time machine I will be able to put all applications and data from the macbook, send back the macbook to apple for my refund and then, when the 17' macbook pro comes in I can restore onto that computer and have all my applications put onto the new computer just as if I had the two computer and plugged them into each other to copy onto the new computer. Can I do this with Time Capsule? Will it make a clone of my hard drive so all application are transferred? Thanks for the helps

No, Time Machine will NOT clone your existing MacBook's hard drive regardless of the destination drive that you use. You will need another utility like SuperDuper to do this.
Can I do this with Time Capsule? Will it make a clone of my hard drive so all application are transferred?
You can use the Time Capsule (TC) as the destination drive for cloning software. In this case, the TC will perform like any other network drive.

  • Possible to simultaneously use time capsule for backup + another router for internet?

I will soon be moving into an apartment in which my landlord provides wireless internet through her own router.
I also have my own Time Capsule, which I'd like to continue to use to back up my Mac via Time Machine.
Is it possible to connect to both my Time Capsule (for backup only) and another router (for internet only) at the same time?
If not, can anyone suggest a good workaround?

    moskovit wrote:
I've done a little research, and it looks like I might be able to wirelessly daisy chain the two routers, using WDS (wireless distribution system), assuming my landlord's router supports it, but that this would drop the speed of the internet significantly: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2623802?start=0&tstart=0
It works extremely poorly and the landlord would need to agree to it.. plus it would require use of WEP security which is hackable by children with internet hack kits in about 2min flat. Don't go there. Apple have made their products incompatible with most other routers. So any suggestion of a workaround will involve spending some money on your part.
You could buy a airport express and plug that into the main router by ethernet.. again if allowed. Your TC can do wireless bridge to another apple product very well. Messy but could work. It is not that expensive to get a second hand AEBS and use that. You don't need the latest products but wireless range would be better in the AEBS than AE.
So I'm still wondering: Is there another workaround?  Is there a way to get my mac to connect to my time capsule (for backup) and another router (for internet) simultaneously, or is that just technologically impossible?  If it's impossible, is there another solution?
You cannot wirelessly connect to two different wireless devices at once on one client. You need to either have a second wireless client in the laptop.. for instance a USB stick which can be fairly tiny nowadays. It is just you need to find one with Mac drivers. Or the TC must have internet connectivity. You could get that by buying a wireless bridge, and using that in your room, with the TC plugged into it. Universal wireless bridge devices are fairly cheap, but can be a pain to setup. Look for products that work with the main router and use as fast a speed as possible. It can be a tricky setup as you need the wireless bridge working on one channel and the TC working on another. What I am suggesting is the WDS solution you found but using two different boxes to do it. And not using WDS at all, unless the main router is suitable, but rather universal bridge.
The hassle of all that suggests to me,, I would go for the wireless stick, so your Mac laptop has two wireless clients.

I have no idea if this works just to show you what I mean. Please do research it yourself.
An ethernet connection to the TC is far superior solution albeit would require you to plug and unplug it.

  • Use time capsule for storage as well as time machine

I would like to use my time capsule for file storage as well as automatically backing up my mac using time machine.  I had my time capsule & time machine set up and it was backing up just fine.  I dragged some files over to the time capsule manually through finder and I began to get error messages saying time machine could not back up my mac because it was already in use.

Simply reboot the TC to get access..
But did you drag the files inside the sparsebundle.. that would be very bad.
Any files dragged to TC and deleted on the computer will have no backup and no possiblity of backup by time machine. Things die.. then what happens to the files.
    Just answered that question.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4734078?tstart=0
People should learn the TC has limitations.. it is a sealed unit and when things go wrong Apple doesn't help.

  • Using time capsule for time machine and as a HD

I'm debating if buying a time capsule is the right choice for me. Now that my HD on my MBP is almost full, I have to decide quick. At the moment I have my whole itunes library on the MBP HD but I was told the time capsule is a great device which works great with the time machine options.
My question is, Can I use the time capsule for the time machine option and as a HD to keep my itunes library?
    Thanks

Can I use the time capsule for the time machine option and as a HD to keep my itunes library?
In theory, yes. But, you might want to consider that the idea behind having a backup is that you have a copy of everything that is important to you on a separate drive, so that when...not if...the drive fails, you have another copy in a safe place.
If you place the iTunes library on the Time Capsule, +you will have no backups for the library+.
A far better strategy would be to attach a USB drive directly to your computer and use that for the iTunes library and also add the Time Capsule as well. Then Time Machine will backup both the drive on your computer and the attached drive, so you'll have copies of your computer and your iTunes library.

  • HT201250 Using Time Capsule for Backing Up a RAID Array

I am setting up an 8TB RAID 0 array at home. I am going to use 4 - 2TB FW drives. I already have an SSD in my 3.4 Ghz i7 iMac but am speed hungry and since I have the drives, I figure I would play a bit. I know it is vital to have solid back-up for this, but I am unsure of the best back-up solution. I am wondering if I can attach 3 - 3TB drives to my 1TB Time Capsule and use the combined 10TB in Time Machine to back it up? To date I have backed up each drive separately, but am realizing the folly of that and want to explore RAID 0 at the same time as explore a new back-up solution. Everything I read tells me I need a drive for backing up the RAID array that is at least as large as the combined total of the array. That doesn't make sense if the array is so large... I can't find anywhere if Time Machine supports spanning mulitple back-up drives.

According to the document linked below, you can, but it may not have the performance to back up that much data. Over Wi-Fi, forget it.
Uses for the USB port of Time Capsule, AirPort Extreme, AirPort Express

  • Using Time Capsule for backup storage as well as Time Machine back-up

Just set up Time Capsule and used Time Machine to back up files. All working OK with new backups as well, but I need to transfer files from an external hard drive to Time Capsule.
Read on Apple site, "Note: Time Machine works best if you use your back-up disk only for Time Machine backups. If you keep files on your bckup disk, Time Machine won't backup those files and the space available for Time Machine backups will be reduced.
What I really need is to have Time Machine backup everything. I don't have enough internal hard drive space on my MacBook Pro to transfer files from the external hard drive to the computer so that Time Machine could read them and back them up. How can this be accomplished? Is there another way? Thank you.

    1. "Use Disk Utility in your Applications > Utilities folder to check the format of the disk. Mac OS Extended (Journaled"
I did this and the external disk is formated corectly. Thank you!
I "Entered Time Machine" again and found the external drive listed (Yes!) I reviewed files including photos and some video files and all were accessable except my iPhoto files. Note: I have been using iPhoto Manager (3rd party software) to organize my iPhoto picutres for some time now on the external drive. My internal hard drive, 125 GB, filled up years ago, so I got this program and moved the iPhoto images off the internal drive. I can see the information for the files, i.e. size, created date, lst modified date, but cannot get acess to the picutres. When I try the same procedure with my external drive I can get into the files and get access to the photos.
Is there a way to gain access to these pictures?
    2. I also saw that my Applications folder had been backed up as well, but none of the Apple software, Adobe CS programs, Flash, Final Cut Pro are there. I am wondering if it is because this is an institutional college set-up machine and they installed the original software. There is a "Tech" folder that I do not have access to on the machine. I can update the college installed software and add software myself. All of the software I have added over the years seems to be there in the backup.
So is this simply not accessable except via "Tech"?
