Best practices: Looking for advice

My imac has a 750GB HD. Today I have received what took me a while to decide on as teh best separtae backup drive - I got myself the 1TB Guardian by Newertech. Here is how I propose to keep my files backed up and wanted to know if this makes sense or not. The "bulk" of my files consist of various MS Office types, iTunes library (music and video - biggest collection at around 250GB currently), raw video footage from my DV camera and some odds and ends from iPhoto and iWeb. FWIW, not all but the majority of my "best of" photographs are also backed up with Zenfolio. I haev also started to backup "offsite" with Jungel disk - what I have done thus far is to backup "My Docs" folder and "iTunes Library". That all being said, here is my question:
Am I ok to take my iTunes library, iphot library and My Documents and copy to Guardian drive or should I use that drive with Time Machine an dlet it "do its thing"? Thanks.
Steve

There are lots of different backup strategies but what works best for you depends upon your needs. Personally, I create a bootable clone of my drive then I do incremental backups of the clone on a regular schedule with backup software. If ever my main drive goes bad I can simply erase it and restore from my bootable clone. This is satisfactory for my needs. However, other users may need to maintain archives of changed files in the event they need to restore an older version of a file rather than the current version. A different type of backup is required for this; one in which the backup software archives all changed files rather than replacing them with newer versions. This is the type of backup that Time Machine does. However, TM cannot create a bootable backup.
I can't tell you what is the best strategy for your needs, but there are many options open to you. It's important that you consider all of them before making a choice since it takes a lot of time to start over.
Backup Software Recommendations
My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware)
6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
8. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
2. Toast
3. Impression
4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.

    Thanks, Sameer. I am a little past that point. I have already looked at much

    Now I'm looking for portal UI guidance and recommendation. Something along the

    Unfortunately, Safari cannot be updated past 5.1.10 on a Mac running v10.6.8.
    So, the options are to upgrade to a newer OS X or use Firefox or  Chrome.

    If so, you can download and install Mavericks for free from the App Store.

  • Looking for a best-practices guide for developing in TestStand

    I am looking for a best-practices guide for developing in TestStand. LabVIEW has its style guides and books, but there is very little published about TestStand.
    Also, and I mention this since NI checks these entries as well, how about adding TestStand to the NI Developer Zone?
    Thanks in advance for any leads or documents you can provide!

    Thanks! I was stuck on entering "TestStand best practices" into NI's search engine, and never thought of entering "TestStand style guide."
    If anyone knows of additional pertinent content, I would appreciate hearing about it.

  • Best practice guide for Batch Load utility in Oracle UCM.

    Hi,
    Is there any best practice guide for Oracle UCM Batch Loader utility.
    We are looking for information regarding batch size in terms of number and size of contents. Also is there any loading time standards considering the contents are uploaded in filesystem where filestore provider is configured?
    Thanks,
    Krishnendu

    Hi ,
    There are no specific set of steps / practices for batch loading contents to ucm . It would be very much dependent on how many contents does the user have to load to UCM and how well the server is configured in terms of performance .
    You can get more details from the following documentation link : http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E21043_01/doc.1111/e10792/c02_settings009.htm

  • Where does one find the Oracle Best Practice/recommendations for how to DR

    What is the Oracle Best Practice for install/deployment and configuration of ODI 11g for Disaster Recovery?
    We have a project that is using Oracle ODI 11g (11.1.1.5).
    We have configured all the other Oracle FMW components as per the Oracle DR EDG guides. Basically using the Host ip name/aliasing concept to ‘trick’ the secondary site into thinking
    it is primary and continue working with minimal (or no) manual reconfiguration. But will this work for ODI? The FMW DR guide has sections for SOA, WebCenter and IdM, but nothing for ODI.
    Since ODI stores so much configuration information in the Master Repository..when this DB gets ‘data guarded’ to the secondary site and promoted to Primary…ODI will still think it is at the ‘other’ site. Will this break the actual agents running the scenarios?
    Where does one find the Oracle Best Practice/recommendations for how to DR ODI properly?
    We are looking for a solution that will allow a graceful switchover/failover with minimal manual re-configuration.

  • Best practice document for ACE30

    Can someone point me to a best practice document for the ACE30.  I am specifically looking at best practices as they relate to resouce allocation, logging, FT, and snmp.  I am migrating from CSM so the VIP/Server configuration is basically set.  I am looking for areas that pertain to the ACE as a whole.
    Thank you

    Good afternoon,
    I'm afraid there isn't a best practices document as such, however, I would suggest you to have a look at the ACE section in doc-wiki (http://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/Cisco_Application_Control_Engine_%28ACE%29_Troubleshooting_Guide).
    This document can give you some useful insights on different topics, including (but not limited to) resource allocation.
    I hope this helps

  • Any best practice recommendations for controlling access to dashboards?

    Everyone,
         I understand that an Xcelsius dashboard compiled into a .swf file contains no means for providing access control to limit who can or how many times they can run the dashboard. Basically, if they have a copy of the .swf they can use it as much as they'd like. To protect access to sensitive data I'd like to be able to control who can access the dashboard and how many times or how long they can access it for.
         From what I've read it seems the simplest way to do this is to embed the swf file into a web portal that requires a user to authenticate before accessing the file. I suppose I can then handle how long they can access it from the back end.
         If I do this, is there anyway a user can do something like <right click - save as> on the flash file to save it on their local machine? Is there a best practice means for properly protecting the dashboard?
    Any advice would be appreciated,

  • Passing cursor record values to procedures - looking for advice

    I frequently use cursors in my programs and need to pass the values from said cursor around in the program to other procedures/functions.  I am looking for advice on the best or recommended way of doing this.
    Currently the majority of my programs do something like this:
    CREATE OR REPLACE PACKAGE BODY some_pkg AS
         CURSOR some_cursor IS
              SELECT t.col1,
                               t.col2,
                              t.col3,
                   FROM some_table t;
    PROCEDURE sub_proc
         (p_cursor               IN      some_cursor%ROWTYPE)
    IS
    BEGIN
         dbms_output.put_line(p_cursor.col1);
    END sub_proc;
    PROCEDURE main_process
    IS
         l_cursor          some_cursor%ROWTYPE;
    BEGIN
         FOR l_cursor IN some_cursor LOOP
              sub_proc(l_cursor);
         END LOOP;
    END main_process;
    END some_pkg;
    Basically I create the cursor as global so I can use it's %ROWTYPE as a parameter datatype in my procedures.
    I understand there are other options such as using a defined record type, or ref cursors, but I'm not totally clear on how ref cursors would help me, I don't really understand them well.
    Can anyone provide some feedback on how I currently handle this situation vs. the alternatives?
    Thanks

    I am not sure what you need to do.
    You can base records on cursors or tables using the %ROWTYPE operator.
    Cursors can be defined in the package header and used elsewhere by using normal cursor functionality (untesed)
    create or replace package my_package as
      cursor my_cursor is
        select *
          from dual;
      my_procedure;
    end my_package;
    create or replace package body my_package as
      procedure my_procedure is
      my_record my_package.my_cursor%rowtype;
      begin
        for r in my_package.my_cursor loop
          my_record := r;
        end;
      end my_procedure;
    end my_package;
      This can allow you to define the cursor in one place and reference it elsewhere.
    Reference cursors are pointers to result sets.  They reference actual datasets and can be passed between routines if defined in package headers.  There is a little more overhead using reference cursors but they support dynamic sql if needed (it usually isn't). and you MUST carefully coordinate FETCH commands to receive the values the cursor is selecting (this is harder than it looks)(untested)
    create or replace package my_package as
      type my_refcur_type is sys_refcursor;
      my_procedure;
    end my_package;
    create or replace package body my_package as
      procedure my_procedure(p_refcur out my_package.my_refcur_type) is
      begin
        open p_refcur for 'select * from dual';
    end my_package;
    --elsewhere
    my_package.my_procedure(my_cursor);
    fetch my_cursor into v_dummy;
    Hope this helps
