Best practise to add new domain controller 2008r2 and de-promote 2003 x86

Depending on the size of the environment and the complexity determines where the roles should be held. The PDCe role should be held on a machine that has the better hardware. It will resolve any password conflicts and account lockouts. It also keeps the time clocks synchronized across the domain. The other roles are responsible for kind of basic housekeeping across the domain and forest. Such as the Domain Naming master it is responsible for name changes across the domain. The Schema Master which is responsible for updates to the directory and the RID master which issues pools of IDs for DCs to issue for new users or computers. The infrastructure master is responsible for keeping multiple domains and forests in sync. The infrastructure master does not do a lot in a single forest single domain environment and can be placed on any DC....

Also if you are upgrading why not go right to 2012.
Might save a few years on having to upgrade again.

  • New Domain Controller does not show in our different site's Domain controller's Sites and Services

    Hi,
we have two sites in our AD environment. OMA site and NY site. we have three domain controllers in our OMA site and two domain controllers in our NY site. All our DCs are windows server 2008R2 except one in our OMA site that is 2003R2 the domain
    functional level is also 2003R2.
We decided to raise our functional level to 2008R2. I added a new domain controller in our OMA site and transferred all FESMOS from the DC that was running 2003R2 to this new domain controller.
the issue now is that our NY site does not make any connection with the new domain controller in OMA site. it does not even show it under sites and services. I have checked the DNS settings and everything. if you try to replicate the connections
from NY site it gives the following error: "The naming context is in the process of being removed or is not replicated from the specific server."
can anyone plz tell me why this is happening mt brain is just frozen at this moment and cant figure out why is this happening

Just noticed this replication issue has been going on for a while now but we never noticed until I added new DC. here is the error log for the NY site DC.
    Log Name:      Directory Service
    Source:        Microsoft-Windows-ActiveDirectory_DomainService
    Date:          1/4/2014 8:11:40 AM
    Event ID:      2042
    Task Category: Replication
    Level:         Error
    Keywords:      Classic
    User:          ANONYMOUS LOGON
    Computer:      NORDC1.vertrue.com
    Description:
It has been too long since this machine last replicated with the named source machine. The time between replications with this source has exceeded the tombstone lifetime. Replication has been stopped with this source.
The reason that replication is not allowed to continue is that the two DCs may contain lingering objects.  Objects that have been deleted and garbage collected from an Active Directory Domain Services partition but still exist in the writable partitions
of other DCs in the same domain, or read-only partitions of global catalog servers in other domains in the forest are known as "lingering objects".  If the local destination DC was allowed to replicate with the source DC, these potential lingering object
would be recreated in the local Active Directory Domain Services database.
    Time of last successful replication:
    2013-05-16 15:26:38
Invocation ID of source directory server:
    9236ac56-d046-4632-b072-acbe823c5f6c
    Name of source directory server:
    accde843-11b2-476c-9783-9b29252d0ba5._msdcs.vertrue.com
    Tombstone lifetime (days):
    90
    The replication operation has failed.
    User Action:
The action plan to recover from this error can be found at
    http://support.microsoft.com/?id=314282.
If both the source and destination DCs are Windows Server 2003 DCs, then install the support tools included on the installation CD.  To see which objects would be deleted without actually performing the deletion run "repadmin /removelingeringobjects
<Source DC> <Destination DC DSA GUID> <NC> /ADVISORY_MODE". The eventlogs on the source DC will enumerate all lingering objects.  To remove lingering objects from a source domain controller run "repadmin /removelingeringobjects <Source
    DC> <Destination DC DSA GUID> <NC>".
If either source or destination DC is a Windows 2000 Server DC, then more information on how to remove lingering objects on the source DC can be found at
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=314282 or from your Microsoft support personnel.
If you need Active Directory Domain Services replication to function immediately at all costs and don't have time to remove lingering objects, enable replication by setting the following registry key to a non-zero value:
    Registry Key:
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NTDS\Parameters\Allow Replication With Divergent and Corrupt Partner
Replication errors between DCs sharing a common partition can prevent user and compter acounts, trust relationships, their passwords, security groups, security group memberships and other Active Directory Domain Services configuration data to vary between
DCs, affecting the ability to log on, find objects of interest and perform other critical operations. These inconsistencies are resolved once replication errors are resolved.  DCs that fail to inbound replicate deleted objects within tombstone lifetime
number of days will remain inconsistent until lingering objects are manually removed by an administrator from each local DC.  Additionally, replication may continue to be blocked after this registry key is set, depending on whether lingering objects are
    located immediately.
    Alternate User Action:
Force demote or reinstall the DC(s) that were disconnected.

  • Adding new domain controller under tree domain

i have one forest root domain is ABC.com and one tree root domain under this forest is DEF.com ,
i want to add a new domain controller under tree root domain in windows server 2008 r2? i need steps and DNS configuration on forest or domain level
    Thnx

If you want to add an additional domain controller to a domain you should promote the new dc with the primary dns in the nic settings of the new dc pointing at the current dc and once promoted you should point the original ip address nic settings to
the new dc.  I am making the assumption that you are using AD integrated DNS.

  • Best practise to change new SUP on 6509

Best practise to change new SUP on 6509, currently we have dual sup. is it we need to power down the switch and install ne sup?

    Hi,
Below are few methods which you can choose:
It really depends on which Sup you want to replace ( I mean the one which is currently Active or the Standby sup).
    Lets go step by step:
1st-- Think you want to replace the Standby Sup in the working chasis:
Answer: You need not have to worry, just remove the Standby Sup and install the new sup , Make sure the standby sup is running the same software version which Active has.
    2nd- Replacing the Active Sup:
Answer: To avoid any distruption, failover to the Standby Sup so that the STandby Sup takes over the active role and then proceed with replacing the Active Sup.

  • New Domain controller, DNS client settings before FSMO transfer

I recently promoted a new domain controller.  It is the fourth domain controller and third in the site.  I plan to decommission the other two domain controllers in the site leaving just the new one.   Right now the new domain controller points
its tcp\ip client to the other other domain controller\DNS servers as primary and itself at the bottom.  The other domain controllers point to themselves as primary and the newest domain controller on the bottom of the list.  Clients on the network
use the original domain controllers as DNS from DHCP first and then the new domain controller DNS.  Is it okay to transfer all the FSMO roles to the new domain controller or should I make all the DNS clients point to it first?

    Hi,
It is possible to first change your FSMO roles and after this is done then point your DNS clients to the new DC. This should not be a problem.
some interesting information about assigning your FSMO Roles: http://www.windowsdevcenter.com/pub/a/windows/2004/06/15/fsmo.html
    Hope this helps you out.

  • Best method to add new rows

    Hi,
I am new to apex and would like your suggestions as to the best method to add new row to a table. I do not want to use the wizard because there are many tables in the db. From reviewing this forum, the suggested method is to create the report with a form, the user clicks the 'create' button and it opens up to a new form for data entry. There is a 'submit' button to commit the changes to the table. When/How do I create the PK? Is it at the page render when the new form is opened or in page process when all the fields are committed? I tried to add the 'insert into table..' in the page render to create the new PK but I received oracle error. Am I missing a step? Thanks very much.

    Good Morning,
I have a second question to ask about Inserting rows..I was successful with the sql statement in adding a row to the parent table. Now I need to insert a row in the related child table. There are approx 5 child tables where I need to be able to add rows.
My questions as to the proper sequence to do this:
    1. do I execute the Insert for the parent table first?
    2. then have the user click the button to add info for the child table and then click another button that does the insert into the child table? At this point, is this where I reference the parent table(fac_seq.currval)?
INSERT INTO CONTACT(cnt_pk, fullname, street1, city, state, zip, phone, title)
    VALUES (CNT_SEQ.nextval,FAC_SEQ.currval,
    NVL(:P36_FULLNAME, 'No Data'),
    NVL(:P36_STREET1,'No Data'),
    NVL(:P36_CITY, 'No Data'),
    NVL(:P36_STATE,'CA'),
    NVL(:P36_ZIP,'00000'),
    NVL(:P36_PHONE,'555-1212'),
    NVL(:P36_TITLE,'No Data'));
    3. is it proper procedure to have separate insert statements or is it better to have 2 insert statements?
    INSERT INTO FACILITY(fac_pk, fac_type, fac_name, street1, city, state, zip, state_or_tribe, tribe_yn)
    VALUES (FAC_SEQ.nextval,
    NVL(:P211_FAC_TYPE, 'N'),
    NVL(:P211_FAC_NAME,'No Data'),
    NVL(:P211_STREET1,'No Data'),
    NVL(:P211_CITY, 'No Data'),
    NVL(:P211_STATE,'CA'),
    NVL(:P211_ZIP,'00000'),
    NVL(:P211_STATE_OR_TRIBE,'CA'),
    NVL(:P211_TRIBE_YN,'N'));
    INSERT INTO WELL(wel_pk, fac_fk, cnt_fk, geo_fk, well_state_uk, name,site, high_priority_yn,aqui_exempt_yn, well_in_swa)
    VALUES (WEL_SEQ.nextval, FAC_SEQ.currval, CNT_SEQ.currval, GEO_SEQ.currval,
    NVL(:P47_WELL_STATE_UK, '09DI'),
    NVL(:P47_NAME, 'No Data'),
    NVL(:P47_SITE,'No Data'),
    NVL(:P47_HIGH_PRIORITY_YN, 'N'),
    NVL(:P47_AQUI_EXEMPT_YN, 'N'),
    NVL(:P47_WELL_IN_SWA,'U'));
**I am confused as to how to approach the process of adding rows to a child table. Please clarify for me or direct me to a link that has detailed documentation.
    Many thanks,

  • A question and out CA 'domain controller' templates, and kerbros/KDC in general

    Hello All
Can someone please help me with the following question. This may be two questions (so if you think I have to post separately please let me know).
I was reading an MS article called "Active Directory Domain Controllers and Certificate auto-enrolment" which was very helpful but through up some questions too.
for example the article talks about a 'template' called 'Directory E-mail Replication' what is this? in other words we have all heard of MS Exchange for corporate email, but the name of this template seems to suggest 'Domain Controllers' send e-mails to
reach other? (over and above their normal AD replication) or is this template used for sending AD replication data via SMTP rather than RPC (which is something I have never heard of). Can someone please explain the purpose of this template, thanks very much.
Also I want to understand the relationship (if any) between these Domain Controller PKI templates and Kerberos in general (can someone point me to a white paper of good blog article)
For example my understanding at the moment if Kerberos is basically a 'symmetric'  key encryption system where by the KDC (Key Distribution Center) take care of administering all these symmetric key pairs, is this basic premise
    correct?
I understand (at a very basic level) to concept of Kerberos TGT and TST (ticket granting ticket and ticket service ticket) and the fact the client cannot read the contents of either of these (rather the KDC is the trust anchor and deals with all the encryption
and description of the keys to provide/proof identity authentication, and the client simply presents these tickets)
Hopefully the above is correct (or on the right lines), what I do not understand is how this (Kerberos/KDC) relates to DC's and their 'Domain Controller' templates or how these Domain Controllers use the certificates generated from these templates for encryption
(I presume to encrypt the AD sync traffic, but isn't this done via Kerberos).
Also AD CA is optional component therefore my logic suggests there should be no relation to these Domain Controller templates and Kerberos
As you can see I have some fundermental gaps in my knowleague and would really appreciate someone helping me out here
    Thanks very much

Re the template Directory E-mail Replication.
Yes, you are right - these are only used for (optional) AD replication via SMTP, and yes this is rather uncommon. I have only encountered this type of replication in a few environments with very specific - and historically grown - firewall and trust requirements.
    Re Kerberos and certificates:
My favorite white paper is this:
Windows Vista Smart Card Infrastructure. See especially the details of how Kerberos is used with smart cards as depicted in Figure 16 and the text below.
When users use smartcards to logon to their computers they authenticate to DCs and DCs authenticate to them. So DCs also need certificates.
    See
RFC 4556 for details of how public key cryptography is used to protect the Kerberos protocol.
So in summary certificates are used for authentication and encryption.
You are right that otherwise - if you don't use smart card logon for users - DC certificates are optional and not needed to do default Kerberos authentication.
Another reason DC certificates are often deployed is for allowing LDAP browsers and other management tools to connect to AD via LDAPs.

  • How to add new currency in ORCO and ORBO

Hi, I have successfully install ORCO, ORBO and ORPOS. I followed Implementation Guide, Volume 1 – Implementation Solutions to add new currency in ORPOS.
But I still do not know how to add new currency in CO and BO.
I try to use import parameter feature in ORCO and ORBO to import xml, the result said "Success" but there is no changes.
Please help show how I could achieve this.

I change the FL_CNY_BASE into 1 already. POS is OK now. But BO is not regconize that there is a new currency. I'm trying to go to
Admin -> Job Manager -> Available Import -> Import BackOffice Parameters
and try to import xml file that contain belowing content.
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
    <CurrencyImport xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation="CurrencyImport.xsd" Priority="0" FillType="FullIncremental" Version="1.0" Batch="1" CreationDate="2001-12-17T09:30:47.0Z" ExpirationDate="2027-12-17T09:30:47.0Z">

    </CurrencyImport>
The result said it success but I still cannot see any change.
Is there is any other things I should make change at BO? Any property file that I should make change? BO and CO is web application so the structure of files are not the same as POS. I can't following the same thing when I had made with POS for BO and CO.
    Thanks for you helping

  • What is the best practice and Microsoft best recommended procedure of placing "FSMO Roles on Primary Domain Controller (PDC) and Additional Domain Controller (ADC)"??

    Hi,
I have Windows Server 2008 Enterprise  and have
2 Domain Controllers in my Company:
    Primary Domain Controller (PDC)
    Additional Domain Controller (ADC)
My (PDC) was down due to Hardware failure, but somehow I got a chance to get it up and transferred
    (5) FSMO Roles from (PDC) to (ADC).
Now my (PDC) is rectified and UP with same configurations and settings.  (I did not install new OS or Domain Controller in existing PDC Server).
Finally I want it to move back the (FSMO Roles) from
(ADC) to (PDC) to get UP and operational my (PDC) as Primary.
(Before Disaster my PDC had 5 FSMO Roles).
Here I want to know the best practice and Microsoft best recommended procedure for the placement of “FSMO Roles both on (PDC) and (ADC)” ?
In case if Primary (DC) fails then automatically other Additional (DC) should take care without any problem in live environment.
Example like (FSMO Roles Distribution between both Servers) should be……. ???
Primary Domain Controller (PDC) Should contains:????
    Schema Master
    Domain Naming Master
Additional Domain Controller (ADC) Should contains:????
    RID
    PDC Emulator
    Infrastructure Master
Please let me know the best practice and Microsoft best recommended procedure for the placement of “FSMO Roles.
I will be waiting for your valuable comments.
    Regards,
    Muhammad Daud

Here I want to know the best practice
and Microsoft best recommended procedure for the placement of “FSMO Roles both on (PDC) and (ADC)” ?
There is a good article I would like to share with you:http://oreilly.com/pub/a/windows/2004/06/15/fsmo.html
For me, I do not really see a need to have FSMO roles on multiple servers in your case. I would recommend making it simple and have a single DC holding all the FSMO roles.
    In case if
Primary (DC) fails then automatically other Additional (DC) should take care without any problem in live environment.
No. This is not true. Each FSMO role is unique and if a DC fails, FSMO roles will not be automatically transferred.
There is two approaches that can be followed when an FSMO roles holder is down:
If the DC can be recovered quickly then I would recommend taking no action
If the DC will be down for a long time or cannot be recovered then I would recommend that you size FSMO roles and do a metadata cleanup
Attention! For (2) the old FSMO holder should never be up and online again if the FSMO roles were sized. Otherwise, your AD may be facing huge impacts and side effects.

  • Best way to add new post link

What would be the best way to add a "new post" link on the main homepage that links to the appropriate blog page. Ideally, I'd like to put a small photo too.
Is the only way to manually add it every time I update, or is there a better way?
    Thanks, Jill

You can do it any number of ways. Link a shape, link text, or link a photo to the appropriate blog page, using the Inspector from the tool bar at the bottom of the iWeb window.
You are correct that the only way is to manually update each time. I don't know of any method to get the blog entries to auto update an indicator on the Home page in iWeb.
I have a site for a current project I'm on that has a "Shot of the Day" link on the Home page. As the site has gotten large, I have a duplicate of the Domain file for this site that contains nothing but this Home page. I update the page and then simply swap out the files on the server with the updated ones. Makes opening, editing, and saving the changes faster and easier than publishing the entire site each time. Here's an example of how I placed the link on the Home page...

  • Best pracices for setting up Domain controller for our remote European offices

    Hi,,
We have about 17 remote site across Europe (HQ in UK), I want to start revoking the offices local DC's and host them in a couple of Cloud servers in Germany with local NAS boxes for file storage. I will have MPLS network between the offices to the Cloud
    DC.
Now what would be the best practices and tips for this situation in respect to the DC's. How can I prioritize the remote offices to use the Cloud DC/DNS and not our DC at our HQ in the UK. Would it be better to have a sub-domain created (europe.company.co.uk)
    for the other offices.
Any suggestions on this setup for the DC

    Hiya,
on the conceptual level. The reason for having local DC's, is that if the local sites internet line is offline, people are still able to authenticate and access local resources. From that point of view, you might as well just run with your HQ DC's only. Note:
the cloud does offer availability on their services, that might not be matched by your HQ in terms of double internet lines.
    That said.
The DNS server of the clients as well as the sites & services of Active Directory. Your clients will use the nearest domain controller available from sites and services information.

  • How to Add New Domain To Available Domans List Under General Parameters

On the SMTP Inbound Server configuration page how does one add a domain to the list of local available domains? It appears to only give me a choice of my current domain and then a "com" domain.

Specifically to the question, you'd need to create a new domain from the traffic_cop Administration tab. I suspect though that there is a hidden implied need in your question - why do you want to add another domain to this list?

  • New Domain Controller DNS Issues

    Hello,
We currently have 2 root Domain Controllers (ROOTDOM) and 4 child Domain Controllers (MYDOM). ROOTDOM is an empty domain, everything on our network uses the MYDOM domain.
These existing DCs were running Server 2003, so we upgraded the schema and added 2 Server 2008 DCs in ROOTDOM and 4 Server 2008 DCs in MYDOM. All servers are DNS servers and Global Catalog servers.
The AD replication status tool shows replication is working perfectly between the new and old DCs, and everything looks up to date in AD and DNS on all servers.
The new servers have a SYSVOL and NETLOGON share as they should.
The servers are all in the Domain Controllers AD group and have correct static IP addresses, forwarders are pointing to the 2 old 2003 ROOTDOM DCs which in turn point to an internet source which works fine.
The problem is that when I change the DNS server address of a machine in MYDOM to one of my new 2008 DCs, the machine appears to lose connectivity with the domain. As soon as I put the DNS server back to one of the existing 2003 DCs, connectivity resumes
    as normal.
I really don't understand what else I'm missing on those 2008 DCs, could you give me any pointers of where to look?
    ROOTDOM          MYDOM
    2003RDC1         2003DC1
    2003RDC2         2003DC2
    2008RDC1         2003DC3
    2008RDC2         2003DC4
                            2008DC1
                            2008DC2
                            2008DC3
                            2008DC4
The issue is slightly complicated by the fact that 2008DC2 has a hardware failure so DCDIAG (understandably) reports replication issues to that at the moment.
    Any pointers greatly appreciated.

    Hi Kev,
    >>The problem is that when I change the DNS server address of a machine in MYDOM to one of my new 2008 DCs, the machine appears to lose connectivity with the domain.
Before going further, does the 2008 DC belong to MYDOM domain? For AD-integrated DNS servers and if these servers belong to the same domain, they should hold the same set
    of DNS records.
Besides, we can check DNS event logs to see if some related events were logged.
    Best regards,
    Frank Shen

  • What is the best approach to add new fieds to an extractor

I am working with an infocube wher i need to get the day of the week based off the created on date.  I need the number like 1-7 and then tie this to another table to get the actual name like Monday, Tuesday.  Etc.
I was planning on creating an update rule which would find the day of the week and the name of the day.  I am not sure the best approqch as far as loading the data and the inforobject.  Should i load the text 1 time becaue that will never change, like Monday etc. or do Ioad it in the start routine?    also do I create 1 infoobject with text or do I create 2 separate one?

You can create a new infoobject with text and manually create 7 records.
In update rules ou can use function module DATE_COMPUTE_DAY or DAY_IN_WEEK to get the numeric value of the day of the week.
    Hope it helps.

  • My New domain controller wont see the pdc

hi, i have a windows 2003 pdc that is the only one on the network, previous IT people did not have a BDC or system back up. Now the current domain controller is giving trouble, i tried to install a secondary 2003 domain controller (BDC) but it dose not see
the primary domain controller and it wants to be the pdc. The problem is how ever i want to keep all the previous user accounts and settings in the ad. I have tried using admt but it dose not recognise another dc how can i transfer all user info stored in
    the active directory.

    Hi scipiotechadmin,
Is the function level of your domain is Windows Server 2003? If so, you can use the Windows Server 2003 Active Directory Domain Rename Tools which can provide a security-enhanced and supported methodology to rename one or more domains (as well as application
directory partitions) in a deployed Active Directory forest:
