Best process for idvd

What is the best way to create a photo slideshow to burn to DVD? Should I export photos from iphoto, create in iDVD or use imovie. What are the pros and cons for each?

For what it's worth I prefer to create my slideshows in iDVD. Since I'm not a big fan of the Ken Burns effect I'm not affected the by lack of KB in iDVD. iDVD will accept more than 99 slides per slideshow but unless you use quality media and burn as slow as possible some DVD players may stall at the 100th slide. Both of my DVD players do pause slightly but continue on playing OK. The down side is if you require precise audio editing then you're better off using iMovie 6 (HD) which allows much greater audio control.
Creating the slideshow in iDVD allows you to easily add titles/subtitles to selected slides. (Note: when you turn on that option all of the slides will display their file name/title. If you only want a couple of slides to have a title you'll need to delete the titles from the others. Somewhat of a pain.
If you go the movie route if you close iMovie and then drag the iMovie project file into an iDVD slideshow you'll avoid double encoding, once by iMovie and again my iDVD, and the movie will be scaled to the TV Safe area like regular still photos (new feature in iDVD 8).

  • Best compression for IDVD

I am taking a slide show made in Iphoto and saving it. Then I open it in Express and and add a sound track to it and then save it as a quicktime to be brought into IDVD.
What is the best setting for that quicktime movie because it doesn't look so good when i bring it into idvd.........? i just am saving it as a quicktime looking for the fastest processing... but best quality is important too....
can i dvd import mpeg4? I was hoping to save it as dv but that seems to be a long export time... speed is important
I also could save it as an mpeg-2 and then go through studio pro but i want something quick for the family christmas card which is a dvd....
    thanks.....

Test results for you Martin (and anyone else!).
I used 10 good quality jpeg slides (2560x1920) and didn't bother to downsample them.
Imported them into FCE at 3 seconds each for a running time of 30 seconds.
This slideshow was converted to a QT Movie and put into iDVD.
I then made another slideshow in iDVD using the original jpegs.
The DVD-RW was burned using Best Quality. The whole exercise took about 20 minutes.
The DVD was viewed on both the CRT monitor of my eMac and a large 28"(4x3) CRT TV (using a DVD player).
Sharpness-wise I could not detect any difference (between the 2 slideshows).
However the FCE slideshow did exhibit more interlace flicker/aliasing on certain slides. (I hadn't got a TV hooked up during the FCE phase or used a deinterlace filter).
The results are neither scientific nor conclusive but they do suggest that we may be worrying too much about the techniques we use.

  • What is the best replacement for iDVD

I just bought a new iMac and found out that iDVD has vanished. What's the best approch for making slide shows from iPhoto and burning to a  DVD?

Sorry, but I haven't found a way to burn a movie directly from iMovie since iMovie HD (6) (note: burn project to disk):
Whereas, there are no options to burn in the current iMovie version:
You can share it to online sites and you can export it, but you can't burn it.

  • Best process for scoring my movie?

Will I loose quality if I import my project to Garageband for the scoring and then use the output from Garageband (incl. video) for iDVD?
I choose to remove the video and the video sound once I had done the scoring and then export it as an audio file.
    I added that to FCE.
It became one big file of the full lenght movie.
I noticed that FCE did not seem to accept ACC so I had to convert to MP3.
Does anyone have some experiences and "best practice" ?
    Thanks / Christer

Are you talking about loosing video quality?
You won't loose video quality. GarageBand doesn't export the video, it uses the videos simply as a guide for you to score with. When you export, you export the audio not video.

  • What is the best process for adding a long text scroll into a video?

I have an hour video and need to insert a narrated poem that will either scroll or have lines fade in / out. What is the best process to create that poem? Do I use Motion? Live Type? compose it directly in FCP? I'll have either a still image or a looping video for the background. Once I know the best starting point, then I'll refine my questions. The poem is about 4 minutes narrated. Appreciate any help to get me started.

In the effects window try "Scrolling Text". Set it to be the length you need it (duration) and paste in your text and render and see how you like it. I think scrolling text has a nice little fade at the top and bottom too.
Or, you can make the text an image in something like Photoshop and keyframe it to slowly move in FCP for the duration of the video.

  • Best compression for iDVD authoring and DVD playback?

I have some DV footage that I had captured into MPEG-2 files on my old PC, then recently got a Mac and I want to be able to edit the footage on the Mac software I have and put it onto DVD for standard playback on a TV.
I've got the latest Quicktime Pro with the MPEG-2 playback component, and MPEG Streamline that allows me to convert the MPEG-2 files into MOV files. I want to be able to edit them in iMovie and Final Cut Express, and then I want to drop them into iDVD.
I would like to know what the best compression to use would be in converting the MPEG-2 files into MOV files or other format that's compatible with iMovie and Final Cut Express that will result in the best quality for DVD playback. I don't have Final Cut Pro so I don't have Compressor, which I understand, already has a preset compression optimized for DVD authoring and playback later on.

So you have some already mpg-2 compressed files you want to edit in FCE. Using MPEG Streamclip, I suggest you convert them to DV video (which runs about 13 GB per hour) to work on them in FCE.
As far as recompressing the edited video, I really doubt the mpg-2 encoding mode used will make much difference since you took the real quality hit when you initially mpg-2 compressed to content.
If you want to take the additional time required, you can try the new 'Professional Encoding' option in iDVD 7, but I seriously doubt it will improve anything. (You know the old 'silk purse out of a sow's ear' thing...)

  • Best Process for making DVD slideshows w/iDVD

Hasn't someone made a Sticky about this yet??
I just perused the forum for this answer and it seems the user "Shippley" has provided the most help in this area. I'm hoping they can help in this case. For making a dvd slideshow using ONLY iMovie, iPhoto and or iDVD what process has been determined to provide the best visual quality on playback in a DVD player?
I've read that for best results in putting a slideshow onto a DVD is to make the slideshow in iPhoto or iMovie first, and then send it on to iDVD.
But I need more information, and in one location-
Should the iPhoto/iMovie slideshow be WITHOUT any transitions for best quality?
In iPhoto, should we organize our slideshow in an Event then Share > Send to iDVD for best results, or is there a better way?
Does iMovie HD (6.0.4) or iMovie '08 (7.1.4) make a difference in quality? Otherwise I want the easiest.
When the iMovie slideshow is being sent to iDVD, should we use Share>Export Movie for the best quality when sending to iDVD? Or is there another/better way?
My photo's are scanned from slides and are small file sizes, if they were large (like from a digital camera) do I have to resize them for optimum DVD viewing?
What about the settings for widescreen or standard, either one better?
iDVD encoding, Best/High/Professional, which one for best clarity?
Like most other infrequent DVD makers, I do not want a fancy slideshow, I don't care if it has transitions if it means I can have better clarity in the DVD player. I have old slides that I simply want to burn to a DVD.
    Thanks for your help!
    Sandy

Here is a quote from a post of F Shippley on March 8, 2010 that I am referring to. Bengt, you also responded to this post. The post is titled "poor picture quality with DVD slideshow".
Thus my confusion as to the best practice. I may look into Fotomagico, but like others, I don't want to have to pay for another application that may only be used once or twice a year! Thank you for your responses.
F Shippley writes, "As I told you in your other message yhread:
The easiest way to improve the quality of slideshows for use with iDVD is to create them as movies in iPhoto or iMovie! Creating slideshows in iDVD has MANY drawbacks (as you have probably found). It's 'quick and dirty' easy for a few slides, but that's about all I use it for.
BTW, for PAL DVDs use 768x576 pixel images for standard video and use 1024x576 pixel images for widescreen video. That's all the resolution a DVD supports. "

  • Best quality for iDVD?

    hi,
my FinalCut project loses a lot of quality once it is burned in iDVD. it gets really blurry. I am using a lot of titles and a JPEG template created in photoshop with video layered over it. It looks fine when i export to quicktime, bt once it is imported into iDVD, it loses it's quality. does anyone have any suggestions/ideas? i am stuck and would greatly appreciate any help! thanks

iDVD does the compression for you; that's what takes it so long to burn
So, from FCE don't use Quicktime Conversion, use Export as Quicktime Movie; you don't have to check the "make movie self-contained button" if you are keeping all the files together
The closer you are to iDVD's two hour limit, the more likely you are to encounter quality issues, that is really pushing the limit of the product
I generally try to keep my movies under 90 minutes and I get pretty good quality; but as stated, it all comes down to source. Editing DV material I ain't ever gonna make the stuff look like Stephen Spielburg .. or even broadcast TV but I sell these DVDs and most people are happy with the quality
If you really need to make a movie longer than 90 minutes then you need to get into dual layer media (which means a dual layer burner) or look at DVD Studio Pro; an expensive proposition now that you can no longer buy that program separately
As for the quality degrading once you export to QT; how are you judging this? Make sure QT player is set to it highest quality. A TV is still the best place to judge this quality. And all of this is assuming you are working in the formats FCE is designed to deal with: DV or HD.

  • Best Process for Setting Up New MacBook Pro

I have a Mac Pro and am waiting on my new 2.2 Ghz Macbook Pro that should arrive tomorrow. I have already ordered 8GBs of Ram and plan to order a SSD for the boot drive. I have a couple of questions.
-Is a 128 boot drive to small for installing PhotoShop, Lightroom, Final Cut Studio? If so, should I install without all the extra files etc...
-Is there any reason I should wait longer to install the SSD or is it okay to get the internal standard drive filled with programs and then transfer it over to SSD when the Vertex ones are in stock again at Amazon? Or is there another SSD I should be checking out?
-What is the best way to install programs on the new MacBook Pro? Can I do migration assistant of just the critical apps and not the ton of other apps I never use? Or do you recommend only a fresh install always?
If you have any links of step by step instructions it would be much appreciated.

"Can I do migration assistant of just the critical apps and not the ton of other apps I never use?"
    Yup!
"If you have any links of step by step instructions it would be much appreciated. "
Instructions can be found on Apple's Knowledge Base.
Your other questions pertaining to your newer MBP should be asked in the *MacBook Pro (2008 and Later)* forums since this area is for the Original MBPs.

Well I don't think your niece is going to rob you blind or sell your company secrets to the highest bidder, so a full 7x- 35x government grade overwrite and operating install is likely overkill.
Just likley some personal files, pictures and videos, stuff like that you want to make sure doesn't get seen.
My suggestion is to clean out your user level files manually in each of your Documents, Pictures etc folders, any bookmarks in browsers (reset Safari, clear cache) and emails you don't want carried on.
Then download and run the cleaning aspects of OnyX, followed by a Disk Utility > Erase Free Space option. (in your Applications/Utilities folder)
    http://www.titanium.free.fr/
You can create another Admin account in her name/nick and delete the first one with your name and all that.
If you really want to get rid of your name from everywhere in the comptuer, then the only option is a c boot from the installer disk, Disk Utility Erase with Zero (7x or even 35x overwrite) and then resintall OS X and shutdown the machine,
When this is done, OS X boots into the first "Welcome to OS X" video you saw when you first setup the machine. Of course you lose Word as that's not on the installer disk. But LibreOffice is free and much much better.

Your allowed up to 5 computers with your iTunes content, but you can deauthorize the computer in iTunes so it doesn't take one of your authorizations.
Also before you do anything, make a MANUAL backup of your data to another drive just in case Time Machine/Migration ***. etc doesn't screw the new pooch on you like it's been known to do.
I always c boot off the new installer disk on new machines and Disk Utility Erase with Zero option the entire boot drive then reinstall OS X, it's not that I'm paranoid, it's that drives are not checked for bad sectors at the factory, they just slap OS X on it and off it goes, problems appear later on as people use the drive or can't read the software correctly off the drive.
So I map off the bad sectors ahead of time, so the software is on good sectors and never have a post issue like others do with new machines.
If you ordered a Mac with custom software installed, obiously your going to need to reinstall it after this.

  • Best Process for a Procurement Issue ?

So here is the situation -
Procurement created a a Purchase Order (PO). There were 5 items in the PO. We received (and created Items Receipt for them) 4 items so far. The PO was billed and paid in full.
On receiving the 5th and final item on the PO, procurement noticed the item mentioned on the PO was the wrong. We did however receive the correct item from the vendor (they know us better than we do). So there won't be any physical returns involved.
On further investigation, we noticed another item on the PO that has been received, is also wrong (yet we did receive the correct item).
So the question is - how should we treat this? We really don't want to or should not have to cancel the check that was sent out either, because it is for the correct amount. We also want, at the end of the day, the PO to show the correct items and be marked billed and received. It is acceptable to have the wrong items in the bill however.  If we can have the bill show the correct items though, that would be ideal.
    What do you suggest?
    Thanks.

    hi
    kindly note that:
You can amend the PO and add the correct items and go through the approval process again.
then you can receive the correct items via MIGO so that the item stock shows the correct picture.
Regarding wrong items in the Invoice, this can impact the item price, so you will need to set this right by changing the invoice.
For stock of the (wrong )items you received you will need to do the reversal document to get the stock correct.

  • What is the best process for creating a webi document?

I inherited a BI 4.0 environment with published repositories, dashboards, and webi documents.
For development purposes, I tried creating the webi document local to my machine (due to how slow it was to create the document using BILaunch pad and/or the webi rich client on the "console")
I created it as 'standalone, pointing to a local universe'; however, I can't figure out a way to move it back into my enterprise world.
I was able to convert and publish the local universe to my enterprise repository; however, because I created the document in standalone mode, it doesn't appear to want to let me change the data source to a universe.
So right now .. I have a webi document that won't let me select a universe for a data source.
Any help or proven methods for creating documents then moving them to an enterprise environment would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Exporting for iDVD

I have tried using "Export to Quicktime" as suggested in a recent posting, but the file is very small and when viewing the resulting file on my Mac, it looks inferior in quality.
Is this really the best way?
I know that there are many options in "Quicktime Conversion" option, but I tried some settings there and got a 11gb file taht looked better, but still had artifacts in shadows etc.
What is the best process for creating the input to iDVD???

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Here's the process to burn DVD for household DVD player:
In FCE use export to quicktime, you can uncheck "self contained" or not. There is not quicktime encoding at this stage. The encoding process will occur in iDVD itself uppon burning. It's an invisible process.
Drag the resulting file in a new iDVD project.
From this stage, it's the total lenght of your movie(s) and all animated menus in iDVD that rules the choice of your support(DVD blank).
You have to use single layer for a total of 2 hours, or dual layers for 4 hours (if your mac can support this blank DVD). Check your iDVD preference to select the right encoding method, best or faster.
