Best project storage for new pros?

I have a new MacBook pro with retina display on its way (2 more weeks!), and was wondering what people would say for the best setup for fcpx. It's the 2.6ghz and I upgraded it to 16gigs of ram out of fear and the hard drive is a ssid at 562 gigs (or close to it).
I'm concerned about filling up the drive fast so I'm thinking I'll:
1): either go back to using a scratch disk via USB 3 or FireWire 800.
2): rrun current project on the machine and archive all the associated folders for the project to my drobo when I'm done with the project.
Thanks for any advice,

The equipment you require depends on the type of editing you need to do.
If you are making family and holiday type films or otherwise comparatively simple ones with no more than 2 or 3 tracks of video, an hour or so of footage and no urgent deadlines, you will probably find that the computer on its own will cope quite well.
So the best advice is to wait and see.
If you find the computer alone does everything you require in your chosen time-frame, that's all you need.
If you stock up on everything you might want and then find you don't need it, you will have wasted a load of cash.
Over the years, on these forums I have seen people advise others to get the top of the range MacPros, max them out and buy every other conceivable performance accessory when all the enquirer wanted was something to edit his family videos on.
So find out what you actually need by using the basic equipment for a bit.

I'd put them on an external hard drive(s) and burn them to a DVD as well (at least 2 - 3 copies on different drives/media); I prefer having control and a local solution instead of relying on a server and the possibility of someone (who shouldn't be)  downloading my work.

  • What is the best antivirus software for MacBook Pro?

Can someone please tell mewhich is the best antivirus program for macbook pro?

    Hi..
Both Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac and ClamXav are recomended and both are free.
Actually, malware is more of a threat on a Mac than a virus.

Honestly, the one right in front of your keyboard. It's hard to do better than that one, and the Magic Trackpad is just an external duplicate of that. In fact, my dad has one for his iMac, and I seem to recall that there are one or two things I can do with my built-in trackpad that he can't do with his Magic Trackpad... though my faulty memory means I couldn't tell you what those things are at this point.

  • Best Training Materials for Premiere Pro?

I'm a long time pro veteran of Photoshop, but fairly new to video editing and a total noob w Premiere Pro CC  (and after effects) I want to get on the fast track learning Premiere Pro and guess that taking an online video course is the most efficient path.
I don't know if there are any courses yet for Premiere Pro CC 2014, but I suspect that I can make do with a good CC course. There's Lynda.com, and the Pearson/Adobe Press/Peachpit series (perhaps others that I haven't found yet) I'm not seeing much in the way of online reviews for these. Any forum denizens have useful opinions to share?
I have only used iMovie, and GoPro Studio2. I prefer video training for general learning, with printed books (or PDF) for reference.
    Thanks!

    I second Lynda also.
    These are for free.

  • What is the best anti~virus for macbook pro?

What is the best anti~virus foe macbook pro?

None whatsoever. I'm sure that you've heard the line that "Macs don't get viruses"? That's almost true - Macs can be infected with malware, however, and can pass viruses onto PCs. See Thomas Reed's Mac Malware Guide. The only two virus packages that are usually recommended are both free - Sophos and ClamXav. If you feel that you need AV software, try one or both.
    Good luck,

  • Best care practices for macbook pro

Hi I would like to be more active in preventing issues on my macbook.  I use it constantly for school and work, and I rely on it heavily, and so I want to keep it running as best as possible for as long as possible, understanding that while some degradation is inevitable, there is a lot that is preventable.  I apologize if there is another thread like this, i did search, but didnt find anything.  thanks in advance for any feedback from those much more knowledgeable than myself.  I'm runnin:
    MacBookPro8,1
    Os 10.7.2
    2.7 ghz Intel Core i7
    4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    Boot ROM Version:          MBP81.0047.B24
    SMC Version (system):          1.68f98
I'm basically looking for tips on the best diagnostics software for my system, and the best implementation of the software (run it off an external? etc) and best practices for the keeping the computer running smoothly. Thanks again. -dL

Make redundant backups, keeping at least one off-site at all times. One backup is not enough. Don’t back up your backups; make them independent of each other. Don’t rely completely on any single backup method, such as Time Machine.
Keep your software up to date. Software Update can be set to notify you automatically of updates to the Mac OS. Some third-party applications have a similar feature, if you don’t mind letting them phone home. Otherwise you have to check yourself on a regular basis.
Don't install crapware, such as "haxies," “add-ons,” “toolbars,” “enhancers," “optimizers,” “accelerators,” “extenders,” “cache cleaners,” “defragmenters,” “firewalls,” “guardians,” “defenders,” “protectors,” most “plugins,” commercial "virus scanners,” or "utilities." With very few exceptions, this kind of software is useless, or worse than useless. The more actively promoted the product, the more likely it is to be junk. The only software you should install is that which (a) directly enables you to do the things you use a computer for: creating and editing documents, communicating, playing, and so on; and (b) does not modify the way other software works. Never install third-party software of any kind unless you know how to uninstall it.
The free anti-malware application ClamXav is not crap, and although not needed by everyone, may be useful under some circumstances, such as being on a mixed Mac-Windows enterprise network.
Beware of trojans. A trojan is malicious software (“malware”) that the user is duped into installing voluntarily. Such attacks were rare on the Mac platform until recently, but are now increasingly common, and increasingly dangerous. There is some built-in protection against downloading malware, but you can’t rely on it -- the attackers are always one day ahead of the defense. You can’t rely on third-party protection either. What you can rely on is common-sense awareness -- not paranoia, which only makes you more vulnerable. Never install software from an untrustworthy or unknown source. If in doubt, do some research. If a web page seems deceptive, it is deceptive. Any page that prompts you to install a “codec” or “plugin” that comes from the same site, or an unknown site, is untrustworthy. Software with a known corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash, must be acquired directly from the developer. No intermediary is acceptable, and don’t trust links unless you know how to parse them. Any file that is automatically downloaded from a web page without your having requested it should go straight into the Trash. Any website that tells you that you have a “virus” or that something is wrong with your computer is rogue.
Relax, don’t do it. Besides the above, no routine maintenance is necessary or beneficial for the vast majority of users, specifically not “cleaning caches,” “zapping the PRAM,” “rebuilding the directory,” or “repairing permissions.” Such measures are for solving problems as they arise, not for preventive maintenance. The very height of futility is running an expensive third-party utility called “Disk Warrior” when nothing is wrong, or even when something is wrong and you have backups, which you must have. Don’t waste money on Disk Warrior or anything like it.

  • What is best iPad case for new iPad?

I have a cover that works the on/off but have tried a cygnet cover that doesn't activate the on/off.  I need more protection for travel and wanted a case instead.

A case is a very personal choice, and there are many to choose from.
I have the Executive Leather case from Yoobao.  You can get them here:
    http://kevikev.com/Yoobao-Executive-Leather-Smart-Cover-Case-for-New-Apple-iPad- 3-YBNEWIPADEX.htm
It's made of leather and comes in 6 colors.  The cover works the sleep/wake function, and the case provides substantial protection to all sides of the iPad.  The cover portion can also function as a stand.  It's also thin, so it does not add any additional bulk to the iPad itself.  Highly recommended.

  • Best MIDI Interface for New Mac Pro's...

    Hello Logic Pro Forum Members,
Are there any MIDI Interfaces available that work well with the new Intel Mac Pro Towers? Want to make sure everything works well. Going from an older OS9 setup with an Opcode Studio 5 [is awesome] to a modern G5 with OS-X 10.4x and Intel chips. Need something that's going to work reliably with Logic Audio Pro and the Mac Pro. Have a large hardware based MIDI studio and need at least an 8x8. Would be nice if the interface allows daisy chaining two or more units for extra ports. Anyone know if something good's available? Thank you all! Donnie Dixon.

    Hi Donnie
Welcome to the forum. I to came from an Opcode background too and all my family still calls me Donnie
I'll go ahead and recommend the motu midi express to cover your 8x8 needs, it is actually 8x9 and it also allows daisy chaining, and it is intel compatible. Check it out here

if you need midi merging too check out the XT version

  • What is the best external drive for Macbook Pro?

Migration Assistant is not moving files from my Macbook OS X 10.5.8 to My new Macbook Pro just purchased. Apple Support suggested I transfer thru an external drive. They suggested a 1 TB. They said it would be sufficient for migration and afterward for back up and storage of media and pics. What would be the best one for this purpose?
    Thank You

Go to OWC and purchase a drive and an enclosure. Put it together yourself. Takes about five minutes and a screwdriver. Or you can purchase one already complete from them if you prefer.

    Thanks

No one seems to be hearing what Big Q is saying.
He can pair his iPhone to his Macbook, but cannot CONNECT. He's NOT asking for alternative solutions, like Wi Fi.
I am able to both pair and connect my one one Macbook to my other one, but I can only pair but not connect my iPhone or iPad to either Macbook. So I have the same problem. But I can pair and connect my Macbooks to other Bluetooth devices, like my ancient Nokia cellfone, or my Bluetooth HP printer.
It's irrelavent that I can instead use a direct USB cable or Wi Fi between my Macbooks and my iPhone/iPad - why can't I use Bluetooth? If Apple does not allow Bluetooth between it's Macbooks and other Mac devices, then why have Bluetooth at all? Does my iPhone have Bluetooth only so that I can pair and connect to my my non Apple mobile handsfree car kit, or communicate easily with the dreaded Apple enemy Samsung, or what?
Make no mistake , I am a diehard Apple fan, but this Bluetooth non compatibility issue appears shortsighted and seemingly pointless. Why does Apple not just say why they created the non compatibility, or have a message on the Bluetooth setup programme which simply and clearly says "don't bother wasting hours of your time trying to pair and connect your iPhone to your Macbook, because we don't allow that anymore, reason being that............"?
As a first time user of this Forum I am surprised at the intolerant and highhanded tone of some of the replies  to what is a legitimate question, that is obviously plagueing many, many other Apple users.
