Best quality animated gif export

Hi
I was doing just fine exporting animated gifs (in terms of quality output) and all of a sudden on an update to my fireworks png my exports (no matter what options I change) are just not as good quality as before.
Essentially, I am trying to get as close to the JPEG 100% quality (best quality) I can get - drop shadows on items just don't like that great at moment.
Could someone please advise what is absolute optimum setting for best quality output for an animated gif - I am not concerned about file size.
many thanks
Jeff

Without seeing the image/animation, I can't make specific comments.
However. Keep in mind that the GIF format has an indexed palette of 256 colors, total, one of which can be transparent. If you have a still image of 256 shades of red, and a still image of 256 shades of blue, they'll look fine as GIFs. If you try to combine them as an animated GIF, then the palette will need to be 128 shades each of red and blue, so neither of the images as frames in the animation will look as good as they do as stills.
Also, Fireworks doesn't always give you the maximum amount of colors. If you have an image with 1000 colors, and you export to GIF, you probably won't get 256 colors in your palette. Go to File>Image Preview and see what your palette is. If necessary, add colors from your image where you notice banding (with dithering off).
Finally, the two image formats are not equally appropriate for all image content. GIF is good for line art of solid colors. It isn't good for photos or gradients. If you can forgo your drop shadows you'll probably get better quality in the essential parts of the images. JPEGs are good for photos and gradients (although I prefer PNGs for gradients, myself), and are not good for line art. Unfortunately, if you want an animation, you need a GIF or Flash.

What player version are you publishing to? Exporting to GIF
    will remove a
lot of color data - no way around it. Flash player is the

  • Problems/help with animated GIF exports

I am an experienced Photoshop user.  I recently upgraded to CS5 (Windows) and have been attempting to produce animated gif files.
After reading a few tutorials on the topic, I have been able to:
    Create a PSD with a few jpg images as layers;
    Move the layers to the animation window;
Set the cycle times and optimize the animation window; and,
Use the Save for Web Devices dialog to create the GIF file.
Everything appears to be normal throughout this process.  However, the exported GIF file appears as a dark gray frame when I open it in IE, or upload it to my image hosting site.
Anybody else experiencing this type of problem?
    Thanks

No, my Photoshop CS5 saves animated GIFs just fine, and I did just what you said.  For example (you have to click on an image here to see it animate):
Can you post your image here?  Maybe it could be a problem with your browser not animating the image properly?  What version of IE do you use?

  • Does animated .gif export support animation of library symbols?

I'm currently using the 30-day free trial of Adobe Flash Professional CC. I was really pleased to see how easily you could export animations in animated .gif format, seemed to run without a hitch.
One thing I noticed while using Flash is that instances of symbols placed into a scene don't actually animate when you use the "Play" function -- that is to say, when you press Enter and the playhead starts moving along the timeline from its current position. They remain at the very first frame of their respective animations. In order to show the proper animations of symbols, you have to use the Test function (CTRL - Enter) to actually compile a working .swf of the thing.
This wasn't much of an issue until I tried to export in .gif format and I got this same issue. Instances of symbols don't animate, they only seem to work in compiled .swf's.
FileDropper link to the working file I'm using: http://www.filedropper.com/flashbottle
    Result .gif: http://i.imgur.com/PZVXST7.gif
Since the use of symbols in the Flash workflow seems to be a rather common occurrence it seems unthinkable that Flash wouldn't support their usage with whatever mechanism they use to export animated .gif's. Is there some sort of silly mistake I'm making or checkbox I need to toggle? Or is the functionality simply not there?

    Thank you for your reply!
I check exported GIFs in various browsers and XnView viewer.
It's definitely not a preview  issue - i have 32Gb of RAM and Nvidia Quadro 4000 GPU on my system.
I believe the issue is with transparency, because i'm able to export GIFs with solid background just fine
GIF export dialogue window has 'Transparency' checkbox, so it looks like it should be possible to export an animated GIF with transparent background, but for some reason i'm getting all frames at the same time

  • Animated GIF Export issues

I have a simple Flash animation which I'd like to be made
    into a transparent GIF.
When I do the GIF export, only the first frame of my
movieclips (which are placed in the main timeline) get rendered. It
seems like Flash only records the main timeline preview output into
the GIF file, and does not play movieclip objects. You would expect
the GIF recording to be of the same preview as when you hit
    ctrl+enter (essentially final playback).
Because of this, the GIF export is pointless. The only way to
use it is to have all your animations occur in the main timeline,
and not within movieclips. It doesn't work for me (and for most
people?), because I need to easily scale my animations, which is
doable by just resizing a movieclip.
Is there a way around this in Flash? Am I missing something?
I've had to use a 3rd-party tool (Magic SWF2GIF) to do the
    GIF recording.
My other issue is Flash cannot export transparent GIF's it
seems. Because of this, I have to rely on more 3rd-party GIF tools,
    most of which are rubbish.
In the end, I've had to take snap shots of every individual
frame and edit each frame as individual files in Photoshop to do
all the cropping and transparency just right. Real pain when you
are talking 50 frames, and having to do multiple animations.
Is there a way to export transparent GIF's in Flash?
Seems kind of dumb that I have all this high-end software and
loads of tools... and I still have to edit things frame by
    frame.

  • Animated GIF exported from Photoshop is blurry

I have an animated GIF, 400px x 400px, 150dpi. It looks fine in Photoshop, but when I Save for Web and export it, the GIF appears in the browser double the size and blurry. Even if I choose the export settings to be half the size at 200px x 200px, the GIF is still blurry. I thought a retina display might have something to do with it, but when testing on a PC, the GIF is still too large, even though it appears more clear.
What am I doing wrong here? I just want what appears in Photoshop to appear in the browser.

What aspect ratio are the photos in the slideshow?  Have you tried cropping them to 3:2?

  • Slow animated gif export

How do i stop my animated gifs from coming out slower than i
created them? I think it's coming out as 12fps no matter what frame
rate i set it to. The only way i can see to do it (the very, very
hard way) is to have half as many frames, which is a big process to
go and take half of the frames out from each section.
    So what's the trick?

The trick is to work in 12 fps. That is Gif speed and you
    can't bust
    it's playback.

  • Animated GIF export issue

Odd new issue surfaced today - frame animation plays fine when played from timeline but all layers are exported stacked on top of each other for the duration of the whole animation.
I'm able to see that because the layers have transparency.
About animation - 8 frames with in endless loop, imported into a timeline via 'Make Frames from Layers' command in a fly-out menu in the Timeliine window.
Tweens for animation are off, 01.sec delay for all frames
I was able to export animated GIF before, wondering if this issue is tied to the latest update.
Anyone else is experiencing this weird issue?

  • Settings for best quality freeze frame export?

Hi. I've done some reading in the search for this topic here, but I'm finding a lot of how-to's for exporting freeze frame, but not proper settings.
Using DV NTSC 29.97fps, I know it's far from ideal to get great quality still frames, but, I have a client who was disappointed with her photographer at her wedding and really liked my work and she is willing to pay me to go through and pull off stills from her wedding video.
I do this for virtually every wedding but I just use basic settings because the still frames are used for not more than dvd menu or perhaps a small image on the back of the jewel case.
But if she wants to print these then I'm wondering if someone here can offer suggestions on the proper settings to make them not only the best quality, but the proper dimensions.
    Thank you,
    Eric
    (soon-to-be-proud-new-owner-of-a-macpro-!)

From DV NTSC, your exported still frame will be just 720x480 pixels. Use any image editor to resize that to 720x534 (if it is NOT widescreen) or 864x480 (if it IS widescreen).
( Looks horrible doesn't it? You can't get any better quality than that, just because you - or she - wants to.)

  • Adobe Premiere Elements 9  - animated Gif Export

    Hallo

  • ...last question :  what's the best quality codec for exporting a clip?

I have to export a Motion clip with the best possible quality (with no loss of image or compression whatsoever).
what do you guys suggest? H264? or is there any better codecs? (I noticed that H264 create 'bleeding stains' on gradient backgrounds...)

  • How do i export a flash movie as an animated gif with transparent background?

each export has the background in it.
I have looked into the publish setting for gif but no option there, or in the background colour setting in the main design window has any Alpha or Transparency setting.

Thought that issue went away. The only workaround I found was exporting a PNG sequence with transparency, importing it all back into a better animated GIF exporter like Fireworks as an image sequence and exporting it from there again. It will give you the best quality, control over the timeline, looping and various per-frame AGIF functionality.
    But yes, it's a multi-step headache.

  • How to export the best quality file from FCE?

Hi people. I was wondering which is the option that I have to choose to get the best quality on an exported file from FCE4. The best quality I get is from the "Export - Quicktime movie..." option, but there is a huge compression as I see. The final product isn't as good as it should. Obviously, it won't be the same as the original material, but I was wondering if there was another way of getting a movie with much more quality, like when you use "Compressor" from the Final Cut Studio. Thanks in advance.

I imported the material through firewire (it was recorded on a miniDV tape). I respected the format of the source and the files I got are top notch. The final movie looks great on the computer, the differences come when burning it to a DVD. I'm using IDVD, and the .mov file exported through the option I mentioned.
I want to burn that .mov file to a DVD, which means there will be another compression to MPEG2 once I burn it through the DVD authoring app, but the product has some kind of "shaking" in the dark areas. It's not so bad, but I would like to get the best quality, like the ones I've got from Compressor. Is it possible using the Export - Quicktime movie option?

  • Best quality export?

    Hi all you experts!
I'd like to think I know what I'm doing in FCPro - I'm beginning to think perhaps I don't!!
I shoot with a Canon XL-2 camera, and import the footage into FCPro 6.01. I have the latest computers, etc. Everything up to date.
Anyway, I edit a lot in FCPro, and when finished - I've always exported the timeline as a Self Contained movie. The "settings" is left at Apple's default of "Current Settings". I've done this for years - never thinking there might be a better way!
I know when I'm finished, the self contained movie is about 12 gig/hour - which is the same size as when I capture 60 minutes of video - I always thought this is the best quality way to export. In QT as it plays this, the data rate is, of course, about 30 mbits/sec. I always "thought" this is the "best" way. (Quality speaking!)
But I just read an article in DVCreator
    http://www.dvcreators.net/how-do-i-export-for-dvdsp-or-idvd/
and he's suggesting, if I'm reading it correctly - there are much "better" (quality) ways to export. The Canon XL-2 is an SD camera - no HD stuff yet. But I'd like to get the best quality output I can.
Typically, we export this (the self contained movie) to iDVD, or export it for the web using h.264 at- we'd like to think - good quality levels.
My question - if we export using the setting of "Apple ProRes 422 NTSC 48KHz" - and use THAT as our self contained movie - will we be seeing better quality on standard televisions? I noticed the data rate of ProRes 422 is 40 mbits/sec - higher than just a "regular" export (about 30 mbits/sec.)
It does take about twice as long to export this way, and the files are about 75% larger - so is this worth the effort to export this way?
What do you pristine experts think? Or is it not worth the extra effort?
    Thank you very much,
    Larry

    Hi Shane,
Boy, I'm glad I got you! I read you all the time! OK, I "think" you're agreeing with me, that I'm doing it as good as it can be! Just to confirm, when I'm done a a show, I put the input and outputs in the timeline. I then go to the "FILE" menu at the top, drop down to "EXPORT" then go over to "QUICKTIME MOVIE" - and select it. Then in the next box that comes up, I leave it set (as defaulted) to SETTINGS: "Current Settings". This then creates a Self Contained movie - which plays in QT at about 30 mbits/sec. So this IS the best way to do this?
This IS the way you're talking about, right?? And even though the Prores approach is saving it at a playback at 40 mbits/sec - the quality of the movie watching it on a standard TV or on my MacBook Pro won't be any different (or perceived any differently?) Sorry, I don't mean to sound like I'm grilling you . . . I just want to be sure I understand you, and am doing it right.
If this is right . . . what's with this article?
    http://www.dvcreators.net/how-do-i-export-for-dvdsp-or-idvd/
I "think" you're disagreeing with it?
    Thank you very much.

  • Animated GIF 1px flicker

    Hello,
I'm running into a curious problem with Animated GIFs exported from Fireworks CS4. The animated gif looks fine when viewed in Firefox, Chrome, Safari, but in IE it has a vertical 1px line that flickers (or disappears) and reveals the previous frame. Any idea what it is and how to avoid it?

Sounds strange. Can you please post the GIF file (and the original PNG, too), here, so that we can check? Thanks!
