Best Quality Setting and Letterboxing problem

Just finished 10 minute production shot with a Canon xl2 in 24p advanced pulldown with 16:9. After exporting with compressor to DVD Studio pro and burning - have some leterboxing and quality is not what I expected. Also - client reports "pause" when playing on new dell. Need the highest quality - but production needs to play on most popular newer model computers. Would appreciate any advice anyone can provide:
1. What is best export setting to use from FCP for DVD production of a 24pa 16:9 project? Should 16:9 be checked under the advanced sequence setting - or does that cause a problem in dvd studio pro?
2. What is best compressor setting? DVDbest quality 90 minute 16:9?
3. In DVD Studio - under the track settings - would you check letterbox, 4;3; or pan-scan & letterbox - why is there not just a 16:9 setting? Why would DVD studio pro indicate the asset is 29 vs 24 FPS?
Really need some help on this - we have a fantastic production and wand it to be displayed in the proper format at the highest quality. Thanks so much.

although your 'normal' rendering shows the correct scenery, it looks in 'best' as if the fall-off settings of your light(s) is too high/low (?? )
I would increase these settings of the lights…

  • 19:6 anamorphic recording vs. default project setting and letterboxing

    Setup
    - MB Pro
    - Canon DV cam MVX25i
    - TV widescreen model (SONY)
    Goal
    - Make DVD's (from footage taken with the camera) which provide the best quality when played on the TV set in widescreen mode.
    Method
    - I have taken all footage as 16:9 recordings (when I play from the camera directly to the TV quality looks great) The camera is doing this in an optimal way (from what I read anyhow) by squeezing the stuff into a 4:3 format (theirby not loosing resolution on the CCD).
    - Now I am trying to make a DVD by importing stuff with iMovie HD and later on make a DVD with iDVD.
    Problem
    - Whenever the camera is connected the project iMovie makes is DV-PAL (in a 4:3 format)
    - When importing clips they are squeezed (as expected)
    - Then (if the option is selected) iMovie is letterboxing those clips. So bars at the top and the bottom. NO GOOD!
    - If you then view this full screen you get bars at the sides (because the 4:3 project is shown on the widescreen of the portable) and bars at top and bottom (due to letterboxing).
    - I didn't bother to take this in iDVD.
    So THE question: how to make iMovie do the following:
    - Start out with a DV widescreen project
    - Import clips from the camera and stretch those (because these are 4:3 and squeezed)
    As a sidenote:
    Does anybody know how iDVD writes a widescreen project to DVD is it going to letterbox thas as well or is he doing the anamorphic approach (like it is done on the better quality DVD's)

    HOW TO MAINTAIN 16:9 ASPECT FROM IMPORT TO BURN
    This is the way I do it. There is no compulsion on you to do it my way, but this works (for me). I started this method before iMovie and iDVD were upgraded to 6.0.3, and because not all elements of the various iDVD themes (particularly the pre-iDVD 6 ones) are consistent in keeping to 16:9 throughout the process. I have for years shot in nothing but 16:9 widescreen, partly because it looks better (IMO), partly to future-proof my videos for the increasingly popular widescreen TVs. Living in the UK, I use PAL (25 fps). Wherever you see a reference to PAL in the following you may substitute NTSC (30 fps) in the various settings mentioned, the basic idea is the same. I still use this method, and take these steps, regardless of whether it is always necessary. Worst case scenario: it would have worked anyway. Best case scenario: it works perfectly where it otherwise wouldn’t!
    The object of the exercise is to ‘fix’ all constituent parts of the project (video, titles, theme, effects, even audio!) in the desired 16:9 aspect to avoid producing a DVD where the movie is in 16:9 and the menu is in 4:3 or where other irritating surprises lurk in your project, which you only discover after burning a coaster!
    First go to http://www.mydvdedit.com/index.php?lang=english and download myDVDedit. This is shareware although the download is free. Send the guy a few dollars/euros, he deserves it. While you are there, read all about it. Now install it in your Applications Folder. You will need it later.
    You have finished your iMovie project with music, transitions and so on, and saved it to you Movies Folder. Before you started the project you naturally set it DV Widescreen.
    Open iDVD. Give the project a name, and save it as Widescreen if it didn’t default to the same aspect as your iMovie project. Now import the iMovie project into iDVD, choose a theme (any theme you like, even if it prefers to stay at 4:3) and save the project. Do what you would normally do to the theme and its drop zones. Save the project.
    Now save as Disk Image on your desktop. Leave it there for the moment when it has finished/appeared.
    Open your Movies Folder. Create a new folder. Name it PROJECTNAME – TS FILES (where ‘projectname’ is the name of your project!). Close the folder. You can of course call it anything you like, but htis aids identification.
    Now double-click the disk image on your desktop. It contains two folders: AUDIO_TS (which is empty, but please pretend that it isn’t) and VIDEO_TS. Drag and drop these to the folder you created in your Movies Folder. (This takes a moment).
    Click on the AUDIO_TS folder and go to Get Info in the file menu. Right down the bottom is where you have to change the permissions. Under ‘Ownership & Permissions’ change this from Read Only to Read & Write. Click the small triangle next to Details, scroll down and click on Apply to enclosed items. You will be asked for your root password. When this has completed (fairly fast, as that folder was empty!), click on the VIDEO_TS folder and do the same. This takes a moment longer, as that folder is full of goodies with which you should not otherwise interfere! Close the Projectname-TS Files folder. You have now allowed yourself to change the properties of the contents of those folders, which leads us to the next all-important step.
    Open myDVDedit. Go to File and open the projectname TS Files folder. By all means stare at it shock and awe, but don’t bother finding out what it can do, except for the following:
    Top left you fill see a list of files. Lower centre you have a large window. On the vertical menu to the left of that, click IFO.
    In the window at the top left, ignore ‘First Play’ (if there was anything to correct in that, myDVDedit will have done so and told you).
    Click on VMG Menu en (English). Now the whole thing springs to life.
    Set Coding Mode to MPEG-2
    Set Standard to PAL
    Set Aspect to 16:9 (not any of the other options)
    Now save the file.
    Click on VTS Menu 1 en (English) and repeat as above.
    Click on VTS 1 and repeat as above.
    You have now permanently ‘fixed’ the entire contents of the TS folder (the disk image) in 16:9 aspect. Close myDVDedit – you won’t need it again until the next project!
    If you have Toast 7 Titanium, open it. ‘Select DVD-Video from VIDEO_TS’. Choose Select from the main Toast window and select your projectname-TS Files folder. You are now ready to burn! You can set the burn speed (2x recommended) before the burn commences. Allow Toast to verify the burn before you eject the DVD-R disk.
    If you don’t have Toast 7, then I assume you can burn the projectname-TS Files folder (disk image) via Disk Utility. I say ‘assume’ only because I have never tried it that way.
    Either way, you now have a DVD which will play as 16:9 widescreen on any TV set, even the old ones where you can’t ask it to letter-box.

  • Motion 3 Crashing at specific frame - only in Best Quality setting!

    Hello everyone,
    I've got several Motion projects that show the same problem:
    The project behaves and exports fine as long as I don't set the Render Quality to "Best". When I set the Quality to "Best", Motion will always crash at a specific frame (not the same frame in different projects, but always the same frame for a specific project). E.g. Motion exports the clip fine (Image Sequence or Quicktime movie) up to the problematic frame. When it reaches that frame it simply crashes. If I check that frame in Motion, Motion crashes instantly if I have the Render Quality set to Best. If I set it to anything else, it shows the frame without problems.
    This behaviour is the same on my MacBookPro 2 GHz, 2 GB Ram as on a G5 Dual 2 GHz, 3 GB Ram.
    I hope anyone has an idea how to fix this, I need to render those clips!
    Thanks in advance!
    Bjoern

    No one at all?
    That's too bad. I can't imagine that I'm the only one having this problem.
    I sure hope that Apple releases an update to Motion that fixes the numerous bugs.

  • How do I render best quality in 1920x1080 / having problems.

    Im at the end of a film.
    Shot on Canon HV20 1940x1080.
    Im trying to render a clip at full 1940x1080 BEST QUALITY, when I press match sequance it makes the settings 1440x1080 mpeg preview.
    There is no custom setting under AVI.
    Ive tried also H.264 HDTV 1080p 1920x1080 and it comes out the same as 1440x1080. Theres a lot of noise on the picture.
    Is there a big difference between 1920 and 1440?
    Im sure I set up the project HDV 1080.
    Advice/ Help please!!

    Just read 1920x1080 only renders in PF24 Mode...whats that??
    Ive just read this
    Oh boy!  This is a big discussion, and I highly recommend that you read the HDMI threads, but I'll give you the short version.
    First, let me tell you that the sensor is actually bigger than 1920x1080, which is 2 megapixels.  It's actualy 3 megapixels for photographs, but it's masked off.
    You are probably capturing through firewire off of your videotape.  HD video is ALWAYS 1440 x 1080 with 4:2:0 colorspace and a 1.33 pixel ratio.  The pixels are stretched to give the wider format.
    That is the technical standard to fit the video stream within the data rate for the mini-DV tape.  Every HD camera that records to mini-DV uses that format.  You are not losing anything compared to any other camera.
    The interesting thing is that the output from HDMI is 1920x1080 with 4:2:2 color space and square pixels.  The HV20/HV30 is one of the few that has HDMI output.
    There is much debate on whether the data stream is being intercepted before it's compressed (which is what it appears to be IMHO since there is more detail in the HDMI capture.) HDMI Comparison Thread.
    HDMI is captured with an Intensity card by Black Magic Design.  The biggest drawback of this is you need a computer running at the same time.  That means indoors, or with an extension cord, or portable power. Portable Intensity Thread.
    A big advantage is you get two videos at once.  One on the computer and one on the video tape.
    So its
    1440 firewire max
    1920 for HDMI.

  • Set inside a Set and powerset problem. Need help.

    I've done other posts about this but I figured I'd start a new thread since I changed it so much. I understand the idea of power sets but not how it needs to be a Set inside a set and also how to get this thing to run. If anyone could show me a power set generator or help me fix my code I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks in advance
    public static <E> Set<Set <E>> generatePowerSet(Set<E> S){
              Set<E> newSet = new HashSet<E>();
              Set<E> temp = new HashSet<E>();
              if (S.isEmpty() || S.equals("")) {
                   Set<E> emptySet = new HashSet<E>(S);
                   return (Set<Set<E>>) emptySet;
              else {
                   Iterator<E> iter = S.iterator();
                   temp = S;
                   while (iter.hasNext()) {
                        E obj = iter.next();
                        temp.remove(obj);
                        Set<E> P = new HashSet<E>(temp);
                        P.addAll(temp);
                        newSet.addAll(P);
                        return newSet;
              }

    I have no idea what a "power set" is.
    But, this line:
    if (S.isEmpty() || S.equals("")) {should just be:
    if (S.isEmpty()) {S is the input parameter, and is a Set. Therefore, S can never equal an empty string.
    Did you see my reply to your previous thread?
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=677353
    It seems that you didn't, because you didn't respond to it, and because your current code has the same problem.

  • Best quality setting for Airtunes

    H Folks..just started using my airport express to play the stereo. Are any setting preferable for best quality? ie does the multicast rate affect quality?
    Is the Monster cable going from the Airport Express to the stereo via RCA jacks the best way to connect the devices?
    th you!
    Chip

    ie does the multicast rate affect quality?
    Not really. The multicast rate defines the bottom limit of the wireless data rate allowable before the wireless connection is discontinued. If you set this higher, you will cause disconnects if the signal is low. One way to think of this is that a higher multicast rate will decrease the usable range since you have to be closer to the base station to get a high data rate.

  • Quality loss and sizing problem

    Hi guys
    I am new to the creative suite 3. I produce swf adverts which play on a 32" widescreen at 1280x720. Occasionally I have to put these swfs in a showreel and burn to dvd to play via a set top dvd player (PAL). My problem is twofold:
    1. when i export the fla's as avi's the quality is perfect, but once burned to dvd it is poor
    2. I cannot get the dvd to fit the 32" screen - it always "letterboxes"
    I realise that the aspect of a dvd is set to 720x460, but ids there any way I can created high quality dvds to play on the 32" widescreen, without going to blu-ray?
    Many thanks for any suggestions!

    I don't do Pal, but notes I made when first reading this forum say that is 720x576 so you might check your 460 number

  • Best (quality) Setting for Importing Footage

    Hi,
    could anyone confirm which setting would be best to choose when importing footage from a DV camcorder? (i.e. to retain maximum quality);
    DV or 1080i etc. etc.

    Hi
    I'm in the UK so PAL is the format used (although the footage was taken in America).
    Not really the issue. Was Your material recorded on an American Camera (NTSC) or
    a Camera bought in EU (PAL)
    One can convert from one to the other by setting PAL/NTSC in iDVD at least - BUT THE QUALITY
    will be Very BAD !
    (I don't think iMovie will import from other format - at least my SONY TRV-900e (PAL) can
    playback NTSC - BUT not via FireWire to be imported into iMovie)
    (There is a need of a NTSC Camera to be able to get it into iMovie)
    • Import in the format material was recorded
    • Use JES_Deinterlacer to convcert (free program on the net)
    • Start a new project in the new format and import the conveted material
    As good as it can be - Pro applications exists to an astronomical cost and near
    not visibly quality enhancement.

  • Oracle 8.1.5 install on Linux Redhat 6.0: character set (and other) problem(s)

    I am trying to install Oracle 8i on Linux and it does not work : once the install is finished, I have a message saying that "Character Set not found".
    I am runing a french version of Linux (fr-latin 1) and I try to install Oracle with French and English as languages
    An other problem about this install : Oracle does not seem to recognize that I have 6,9 Giga for it to install, and says that I have not enough space for the install...
    And at the end of the install, it takes for ages (about 15mns) during which nothing seems to happen. On one machine I got out of this phase, but on the other I never saw it finish, it looks as if the computer crashed. Is that normal?
    I went through all the initialization phases, set the correct environment variables...
    thanks

    I've been dealing with the same problems in the english version but could bypass thiss by doing the folowing.
    -Just ignore the disk space stuff
    -Ignore the charset message, also
    -When creating a database, choose custom and then select the WE8ISO8859P1 char set. It worked for portuguese, must work for french also.
    -Everyone here recommended, and I do the same, leave the database creation for later, not during instalation.
    Good Luck!

  • Japanese Data Set and Get Problem with SQL

    Hi,
    I am not able to retrieve or set data contain Japanese characters.
    Formerly our set up was running just fine. But on doing installation on a new machine, things have gone all haywire.
    I installed Win NT 4.0 Japnese version and SQL 7.0 and later Win 2000 Server Japanese version with same SQL 7.0, but on both get and set I get SQL Exceptions:

    I do not wish to Prepared Statements. I will need to update all my JDBC calls this way.
    Would be grateful if any solutions to this problem could be provided.
    Tahanks and Regards

    If you are using the JDBC-ODBC bridge, then add the 'charset' property (with the name of the japanese charset as value, or whichever you are using) to the Properties instance you pass on to getConnection().

  • Very Urgent - Transient attribute setting and getting problems

    Hi,
    I am using a DFF to set date but since DFF can store only varchar data and I need date datatype for the same,
    I have create a EO based on per_all_people_f table of HRMS.
    Then I created a VO based on this EO and added a column to_date(substr(attribute11,1,10), 'RRRR/MM/DD') to get a date column so that I can display date calendar on my OAF page.
    Then I created a page based on this VO and creaed a table region and selected this new column instead of attribute11 column.
    A date field is diaplayed on the page but when I use calendar to set date for this field and try to get the value in processFormRequest, I get null instead of actual date.
    Its really very urgent. I wadted lot of my time on this but could not find any solution.
    Please help...

    Hi,
    Thanks for the reply and sorry I could not check your reply due to some personal proble.
    Anyway, I have used Standard Date value set for attribute11 field but since datatype of the attribute field is 'VARCHAR2', in EO and hence in VO, it is taking datatype as VARCHAR2.
    Thanks

  • Best Quality setting for iPad Playback

  • Best Quality In and Out of iDVD...?

    How, exactly?
    Should I export my movie as an uncompressed QuickTime file, bring that into iDVD, and then burn the disc? I used H.264 when I exported it out of Final Cut Express, but it seems like that would give two passes of compression: first in FCE and then again in iDVD.
    I'm going to try some tests, but the encoding out of FCE for two and three encoder types is taking an hour each, then the burn time for each DVD. Takes a loooong time...
    I'd appreciate any help. I'm trying to get my short movie ready to put on discs

  • Best Quality or Best Preformance

    I am curious as to which is the better setting?
    I know I can get more material on each DVD if I use the best quality setting. Size isn't usually an issue that's why I am unsure as to which setting to use.
    A little background info: I am video taping a bands concerts and making DVDs for them. I want to give them best product that I can.
    Also anyone know how I can take a 12GB DV file and burn the raw data file to DVD so the bands web master can chop of the video to use on thier website?
    Thanks,
    Keith

    Keith and everyone who has chimed in:
    How do you format your external HD so that a PC will recognize the Mac OS extended format. I know my flash drives are recognized by both, but is it the same with the larger external drives. Just curious.
    Keith--Personally I have had no problems with my Lacie externals, but I would be a little careful with transporting them...seems like sometimes people have failures with them just sitting on their desks.
    As far as raw footage to DVD being expensive...If I'm understanding you...12 GB=3 DVD's/concert x 10 concerts=30 total DVD's. With decent DVD's being less than $1 a piece, really doesn't seem that bad.
    Whatever method you use, get an external to back up your files!!

  • 90min best quality DVD?  still too poor

    I have a 68min 1080 apple pro res file to burn onto a DVD.  The file, as is, looks like great quality.  Little motion to the video..just someone on stage.  When I dump it into compressor (using the auto mpeg2 settings for best quality 90min) and then bring it into DVDSP...the quality looks pretty poor.  The text especially.  How can I improve upon this quality?  Thanks in advance!

    Heather,
    The clips do match the sequence and it is apparently interlaced, with field dominance read as upper. Not ideal, but no reason why you not have decent text.
    I agree that sending from FCP shouldn't hurt quality; it may even help. It's just slower and you don't get a fully rendered master.
    Some fonts are problematic – particularly for interlaced. If possible avoid busy font designs – including those with serifs. Drop shadows are pretty much a requirement – regardless of the font choice. Finally, the native text tools in FCP are not as good a Boris (which you can access from the FCP generator button or in Motion. (FWIW, my preference is to put a slug on the timeline and send that to Motion. Create my text in Motion, save and round trip back to FCP.)
    What I'd suggest, mark a short section that includes your text and send that to Compressor. Open frame controls (which should be on already) and click on the gear icon so you can change the resize filter from better to best.
    DOn't be concerned about the pixel shape. Compressor changes that from square to fit a 16:9 image into a 4:3 frame.
    In DVD Studio Pro, verify in your preferences>general that SD DVD menus, tracks and slideshows display mode is set 16:9 letterbox. Create a new test project and import your new test file. Format, waste a disk and see what effect changing the setting made.
    Let us know what you find out.
    Good luck.
