Best quality to export to iDVD

I have a two part question.
I know someone has definitely answered this question but I just can't find the right answer. My doco is 2h 13mins. I have broken it up into two parts to get the best quality. I have put chapters in and I know that I must use Quicktime Movie instead of Conversion to register the chapters. So how do I get the best quality to do this. Do I go into preferences in FCE or iDVD or Quicktime? I have never been good at this end of it all.
The second question is: I have broken the film into to parts the first is 67 mins long, the second is 66 mins long. If I want to scrap the chapters and use the Quicktime Conversion instead, what is the best quality setting I can use for each part. I plan on playing this in our local cinema which we can rent out so I want it to be the best I can get it.
If there is more info you need to help with the decision let me know.
Cheers.

Hi
It said the duration was too long, which it isn't.
Duration is not just movie - it is Movie + MENU and they can be hugh if to elaborated
eg if You use a QT.mov clip on about 60 minutes in background or as button etc.
then set it to show 10 sec. - THE full QT.move will count when adding together DURATION.
Audio also counts when in Menu.
iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (vers 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1)
iDVD 6 has the two last ones
• Professional Quality *(movies + menus up to 120 min.)* - BEST
• Best Performances *(movies + menus less than 60 min.)* - High quality on final DVD
• High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6) *(movies + menus up to 120 min.)* - slightly lower quality than above
About double on DL DVDs.

  • Best quality for export?

What settings for best quality when exporting an HDV video to disk?
Using QT w/H264 but the quality is not acceptable. Can I tweak the settings?
FWIW, I get better quality using Sony Click to Disc at its default settings. Just trying to match that at this point.
    Thanks.

Which "disc" are you exporting to? Hard drive, CDR, DVD-R, etc. And is the point to get as file a file size as possible or are you just trying to archive video but don't care about file size?
And to answer your question, yes you can tweak output settings for H264. When you go to Share -> "Export using QT..." on the export pull down you pick MPEG-4 then directly to the right is a button for "Options". Pick that. Also in there is a button for "Video Options" to refine it even further.

  • How to get best quality when exporting presentation to dvd?

I have just completed a keynote presentation with 21 slides including various movie clips.
I want to export this to Dvd where it can be played on someone elses computer and then onto a projector.
I have tried exporting it as a Quick time movie and then to idvd, however the quality seems to dimish considerably. The picture is shaky and the resolution seems rather low and grainy.
Could someone tell me how I can get this onto Dvd with the best quality possible. i.e if I change the slide size will this make a difference, or if I make the dvd interactive?
I am a completely new keynote user so I apologise for my ignorance but would appreciate any advice!
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Thanks David.
I will give that a go. I went to the Mac store on Regent street, and they were really helpful. The guy there advised me to compress the movie in quick time and then export it onto either a flash drive or ipod, which can then be transfered onto any other computer (mac or p.c) which has quick time downloaded on it. This works for me as I needed my presentation to be exported to my bosses laptop P.C.

  • IPhoto Slideshow Image Quality when export to IDVD

Aloha ... I have two issues that I am having problems with when I export to IDVD. My images look very fuzzy (originals are very high res and print quality images} when exported to iDVD and a DVD is made. Also in the show my vertical images look fine and fill the screen yet on iDVD they are made shorter/squatier and upper and lower parts of the original image are lost. The format is wide screen as is the show. I am using a LCD wide screen TV if that helps. Any ideas out there?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Are you cropping your photos to the 16:9 ratio before creating the widescreen slideshow in iPhoto and exporting them to iDVD for a widescreen project? Most digital camera images are in the 4:3 size ratio and don't convert well to the widescreen. Also check the aspect ratio that you're playing the dvd in as that can have an effect on how the slideshow looks.
Also remember that the images going to iDVD will be reduced to 640 x 480 (normal TV) and slightly larger for the widescreen version. So the pixel dimensions of the original image are not that relevant.
    Happy Holidays
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Best quality movie exports from ipad3

What is the best way for exporting movies from the ipad3. There is a huge file size difference if
I use iphoto or imovie. I cant figure out why...
My goal is to have the absolute best quality movie stored for future use.
    Thanks in advance!

DNxHD in the MXF format is a good choice.  It's cross platform, has none of the issues of QuickTime, yet as good quality as ProRes.
Maybe the 175 or 175X (10 bit) preset, depending on the source material.

  • Best quality movie export

What will be the best format to export as? I want as best quality as i can get, and as big res as i can.
    Thanks guys...and gals

if you export from iMovie you just choose it the size and quality you want.
the streaming format is of course the best for internet - but you can make it larger - but it will simply take longer to load online
    a medium sized format would be 320 * 240
or if you want it larger then 640 * 400
    max

  • Best Quality from FCE4 to iDVD 08

What settings will allow me to get the bast quality film from FCE4 to iDVD? I see the 3 settings in iDVD but was wondering in FCE where I can change the recording settings with quicktime and which to use. My media was taken with a SD DV camera, 16 bit audio.

Did you follow the 12 steps as outlined in the above link? Namely ....
    Resolution
Before you export, take the following steps to adjust the dimensions of your video so that it will have the correct aspect ratio in iDVD:
    1. In Final Cut Express, select the sequence you want to export in the Browser.
    2. Choose File > Export > Using QuickTime Conversion.
    3. Click Options to reveal the Movie Settings window.
    4. Click Settings in the Video section of the Movie Settings window to open the Standard Video Compression Settings window.
    5. From the Compression Type menu, choose DV/DVCPRO — NTSC if your sequence is NTSC or choose DV — PAL if your sequence uses the PAL video standard.
    6. Choose 16:9 from the Aspect Ratio menu.
    7. Click OK to return to the Movie Settings window.
    8. Click Size to reveal the Export Size Settings window.
    9. From the Dimensions menu, choose Custom, then type the following dimensions:
    * For NTSC, 854 x 480
    * For PAL, 1024 x 576
    10. Click OK to return to the Movie Settings window.
    11. Click OK to return to the Save window.
    12. Type a name, select a location and click Save to finish.
This is the best advice I can provide since I'm not completely familiar with your own set up nor do I use Final Cut Express. However I do use FCP and I always shoot on MiniDv Tape at 29.97 frames per second. I can't say for certain which setting/s will work best for own situation since you apparently are shooting Cinema / film mode (24p) .... is this correct?
If so, you might want to consider using 25 or 29.97 fps instead (but not 24). That is if you plan to use iLife'08 /iDvd.
Check out Ken Stone's article below where he explains 24p:

  • Best Way of Exporting for iDVD when using FCP?

What would anyone recommend in terms of getting the best output from FCP for making an iDVD?
I usually export as a self-contained QT movie. Is there a better way?
    J.M. Prater

There's an easier way... export a non self contained movie. The result will be the same... just faster file export and smaller file to boot.
DVD SP will make a lot better looking DVD's if you have that. The encoding done through Compressor is better than what can be done in iDVD.

  • Best Final Cut export to iDVD, 16:9

I apologize if this has been covered a lot, but I've struggled with this question for a couple of years.
How do you get a 16:9, 23.98fps Sequence, to export "as is" to iDVD? I've tried many different settings, but it seems that iDVD wants to interpret widescreen files, whether it's QT or other Compressor-exported formats as 4:3. A normal QT export doesn't work. Currently I'm exporting via Compressors DVD export, "H.264 for Apple Devices," but this export will take another five hours. Help! Thanks.

The workflow you point to is OK, but ...
Here is a different way I worked out, which has given me excellent results:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10840892&tstart=0
We are starting out with 16x9 widescreen high definition, either HDV (which I think has rectangular pixels) or in my case AVCHD (with square pixels). When I capture my 1080i camera clips in iMovie,my timeline has square pixels in either the full original camera resolution, or exactly half the vertical and horizontal resolution. Either way the conversion is very straightforward and should not introduce artifacts. I can do my rough cut in iMovie or immediately import into FCE and do all my editing there.
Since my goal is a widescreen DVD, which for me in NTSC-land is 720x480 anamorphic, it makes sense to use a DV-anamorphic timeline in FCE, which has exactly the same pixel count and aspect ratio. FCE seems to do a fine job of rendering an interlaced 16x9 square-pixel movie into anamorphic DV, and iDVD preserves the resolution in the final DVD (unlike its extremely poor direct rendering of output from iMovie). There is the one minor glitch - FCE does not properly flag its output as anamorphic - but Anamorphicizer takes care of that in a few seconds.
I am working with FCE 3.5. With 4.0 I could capture my camera files directly into FCE without using iMovie but I wonder whether iDVD might have the same kind of problems with square pixel widescreen from FCE that it does with iMovie. The movie comes out widescreen as expected, but the vertical resolution is at best about half what it should be. As a result diagonal lines show stair-step jaggies, and most pans ripple. You can eliminate those artifacts by using DV anamorphic in your FCE timeline. The down side is that when you do eventually want to create high resolution output, you will have to convert the timeline and re-render from the camera originals.

  • Workflow and settings for best quality .png export

I need to export a vector image to a .png for use on Retina display devices. What is the workflow and settings for exporting that results in the best possible quality .png image?

The workflow I used to produce the previously posted image on a WIndows 7 PC:
File>Export>Set "Save As" type to PNG
Upon pressing the "Save" button a PNG Options window will appear.
    Resolution: Screen (72 ppi)
    Anti-Aliasing: Type Optimized (Hinting)
I contacted Adobe support and they told me that the only way to export .png is via "Export" or "Save For Web".
"Save For Web" is designed to compress and I wanted to avoid that to ensure retina display quality.
I chose 72 ppi instead of a higher setting (support suggested I use 300 ppi) because Apple retina displays do not recognize ppi above 72.
The Anti-Aliasing setting was my default and I read somewhere that this was the best for getting crisp edges on retina displays (Sorry, I cant recall the source)
My concerns are that the export and anti-aliasing make larger files and I'm not convinced they are noticably better quality than "Save For Web".
Also, it's worth noting that the support was clearly reading from a reference guide. It was not a "real" expert that could explain the best workflow.

  • Timeline problem by mixing 4:3 and 16:9 clips and export to iDVD

Have a few 4:3 clips dragged to timeline, rest 16:9. The 4:3 clips are shown in 16:9 modus (reduced hight, dim correct). The seq is set DV- PAL (not anamorfic). By exporting I use QT conversion, QT movie, DV-PAL, 4:3 asp rat. Result: All 16:9 clips are OK, but the 4:3 clips are expanded in the hight to fill the 4:3 TV screen. What to do, I want all in 16:9?
When exporting to iDVD I want the result in 16:9.
Another question: how achive best quality by exporting and iDVD prod.?
    Thanks ia!
    Ivar

If you want to export a 16:9 movie you have to work in a 16:9 sequence.

  • Poor photo quality when exporting iPhoto slideshow

Does anyone know which setting produces the best quality for an mp4 when creating a DVD using iDVD? I put a slideshow together using iPhoto because I wanted to use the iPhoto scrapbook theme. I exported the iPhoto slideshow using the highest quality (standard display setting) which produces an mp4 1422 x 800 (H.264, 30 fps, 7 Mbps, ~907 MB).
    The iDVD project settings are:
    1) Best Performance
    2) High Quality
    3) Professional Quality
What doesn't make sense to me is that #1 claims to produce a total ~1GB DVD with a 995 MB movie and shows the Quality level as green.
When selecting #2, the claim is a total ~643 DVD with a 575 MB movie with Quality in the red.
When choosing #3, the numbers stay the same as #2 but the Quality goes to yellow.
Why wouldn't the higher quality settings produce a larger DVD with less compression? Which setting really gives the highest quality?
The default is #1 (Best Performance) which clearly produces the lowest quality video when compared to the mp4 export from iPhoto (appeared with a higher quality) and when compared with playing the slideshow directly in iPhoto (appeared with the highest quality).
Would the quality be any higher if I export the iPhoto slideshow using a customized setting? iPhoto custom settings allow the choice of about 10 different compression types from Animation, Apple Intermediate Codec, to DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, to H.264, to MPEG-4 Video, to None (and others not listed here). The frame Rate can also be adjusted from Current (whatever that means), to 8, to 60. The Compressor Quality can be adjusted from Least to Best. Would "None" as the compression type produce the best quality when producing the iDVD?
The ultimate goal is to display the slideshow on the project at my church. The easiest way to do this is to put it on a DVD. But as described above, the quality decrease from iPhoto direct play of the slideshow is noticeable when moving to the .mp4 and extremely noticeable when putting the .mp4 in iDVD and playing the DVD back.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions or links to better documentation.

you just cannot export your slideshows in order to burn DVDs, with the same quality
That's an issue with iDVD and the DVD standards. All DVD media is downsized to 640 x 480 or the wide screen 720 x 480. It's the nature of DVDs, not iPhoto. If you use the Ken Burns effect in iPhoto you will need to use the largest 4:3 ratio images possible so the zoom and scan of the KB effect is working on the most number of pixels possible.
I've found that the best final image resolution is obtained by creating the slideshow in iDVD from stills imported from iPhoto at the 4:3 size ratio. The downside to that method is no KB effect and only one transition per slideshow. I play those types of slideshows on a 50" 1020p HD Panasonic plasma TV and the images are quite good. But good is in the eye of the beholder.
See Jim Symon's post in this iDVD topic: Re: High-definition DVDs. Also search his other posts as he was working out a workflow using Photo to Movie to create high def movies and burn them with iDVD. As I recall he found and posted his workflow at one time.

  • Tips for best quality?

I've got a full res SD quicktime movie that I want to put onto DVD....how can I get the best quality out of this video on DVD through compressor....should I just choose best quality with a 2 pass vbr?

Does anyone have any tips for best quality imovie3 exports but keeping file.
Here is a quick Apple tutorial introduction that may be of some help:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/tutorials/h264.html
I personally use the QVGA (AKA "Internet Content") H.264 settings for everything from family site clips to iPod compatible files. 400 kb with stereo 128kb audio should produce a good quality file at 29.97/30 fps which is on the order of 4 MBs per minute of content and are suitible for DSL/Cable QuickStart viewing. You can, of course further reduce file size by decreasing data rates, frame rates, target display size, etc. However, to my mind, the quality suffers and becomes unacceptable for my purposes. QT Kirk has other tricks such as further halving the dimensions and then doubling the playback display. This would get you down to the approximately 1 MB per minute mark or sub 1 MB rage when couple with reduced data/frame rates. Basically, you are only limited by your own idea as to the minimum level of acceptable quality.

  • How to render best quality video in AE CS5

Which format is the best quality in export setting?
I want render the MTS(AVCHD) fromat video with no wastage, and also keep the video as orignal size.

I want render the MTS(AVCHD) fromat video with no wastage, and also keep the video as orignal size.
By definition impossible in a compositing program like AE that expands all image data to full RGB and then fully re-compresses it depending on your output format. there will always be loss or a change in file size or both. As David said, render settings are dictated by the use, everything else is utterly beside the point.
