Best Quality too big for DVD. need help

Hi,
I just completed a movie using iMovie. I compressed the movie as a Quicktime file at best quality and it is 6gb. I understand that this is too big for the 4.7gb dvd-r's i have.
I wanted to know the best way to get my movie to fit while still mainting the best possible quality. This project is very important and i need it to be able to play on a home dvd player tomorrow.
I'm using iDVD.
Can somebody please help me out.
Thank you so much

Hi Karl,
first of all: on this forum, my guess is, you are the one with the deepest insight in iMovie (one word: corrupted projects... oops, that was two).
BUT...
My job for more then 20 years is communication, advertisement as an example. make the message in less then 8 words...
Apples says: 60/120 minutes of an iM project fit on a dvd-r.Full stop.
that is from my p.o.v crystal-clear..HOW is this done? easy: make project, click "iDVD" - BOOM! done... to quote the CEO of a small computer company...
people buy cars without ANY idea, what ABS, EPS, etc is, besides HOW it works. they use it. full stop. anyone any idea, what happens, when you push the pedal...? ... when the car DOESN'T accelerate, you realize, you have NO clue...-
funny enough, this forum is CROWDED with people, who don't own a driver's license, but try to explain, the car manufacturer has done big bugs, lots of mistakes, should fix that & this.- you CAN use a car, to boil eggs, iron your shirts and create a painting... but THAT would need a better understanding of how a car works.
topics which are/can not understood lead to what the behaviorism calls "superstitious behavior" - you do some really weird things, because you believe it has any effect....
so, sometimes, less knowledge leeds to better results
(from a communicator's point of view)
I agree, maybe the "help" files should offer an "expert" mode....

  • The size of my exported FCP movie is too big for DVD studio pro

    Hey,
I have been editing for 4-5 years now and have never had a problem with size of a project to put into DVD Studio Pro to burn. However, I just finished a 2 hour project in which exported as a FCP movie it is 23.97 gb in size. When i put this into DVD Studio Pro it makes it 4.8gb in size which just makes it too big for it to burn. I have tried changing the compression to no avail and just now decided to clean up the timeline so everything is on one track with nothing overlapping. (The problem was it was a 2 camera shoot so the first camera i had on the bottom track constant with the second camera on the top track when i needed it but still with the first camera underneath.) Do you think this could be the solution to my problem? If you guys could help me out it would be most appreciated!

some things don't make sense here. please clarify.
Standard DV is roughly 5 minutes per gig, so that means that you have just about 2 hours of video, ok, got that. Now it's the two track thing that gets me.
Are you saying you have 4 hours of footage, the same thing from two cameras, and you're trying to set up a multi-angle DVD?
If it's just that you used two video tracks to edit, then NO, it is not your problem. It's still only 2 hours, the video will be mixed down to one track upon export from FCP to quicktime.
My suggestion is, instead of bringing a quicktime file directly into DVDSP, use compressor. I believe they have a preset in compressor 2 for a standard 120 minute DVD. IF you're project is truly less than 120 minutes, than that should be fine. If not, then you may have to manually make your own setting and lower the bitrate.
    So the workflow is:
    -open sequence in fcp
-file>export>quicktime movie... (you can uncheck "make movie self-contained" if you want it to export faster and you plan on keeping your original capture footage around)
-export your movie to a directory of your choice with a name of your choice.
    -open compressor (in applications)
-drag the quicktime file you created into compressors main window, this will set it up. Now specify the export setting (120 minute HQ all files either 16x9 or 4x3 dep. on project) and specify a location for the files to be created. I strongly suggest that you use the HQ (High quality) settings in compressor. It's much slower to process, but much better quality.
-with a 2 hour movie it should take a really REALLY long time to compress, so I'de say do it over night.
-when compressor is done, you should have 2 or three files. a .m2v file a .aif file, and a .ac3 file. The .aif is your PCM audio, much better quality than the .ac3, which is dolby 2 channel. However, the .ac3 is a much smaller file with a lower bit rate, so if the .aif makes the DVD file size too big, you can switch it out for the .ac3
-Finally, open up your DVDSP project, drag the .m2v, .aif, and .ac3 into DVDSP and use the .m2v for the video track and either the .aif or .ac3 as the audio (as mentioned above)
-the good news is, your DVD media is already rendered, so when you go to build your DVD it will go much, much faster!
By the way, I recommend you go to file>advanced>build do not do a burn and build.
I find it best to build the VIDEO_TS folder on a hard drive and then use a program like toast to create a DVD (using toasts from VIDEO_TS option). This method also allows you to go back into DVDSP, make tweaks, and reuse your VIDEO_TS folder, not having to rebuild the whole thing each time.
Remember, 120 minutes on a single layer DVD is going to render fairly low quality no matter what.
If you have a newer mac and a dual layer drive, you may want to cough up a few bucks and get a dual layer DVD-R, then you have over 8 gigs of space to work with, perfect for HQ 2 hour footage.

  • NEED THE BEST QUALITY QUICKTIME MOVIE FOR DVD!  THANKS FOR ANY ADVICE.

I just finished a three minute piece that will be shown on DVD and projected to a sixteen foot screen. I usually just output a self-contained quicktime movie with current settings and then compress with bitvice. While I'm happy with those results, because of the size of this screening, I'm curious whether there might be better options for output to quicktime, such as uncompressed, etc?
I've also heard that I could output as a Jpeg, or a PNG file, but I'd love some advice on what works best and the workflow, as I need to get this done fast and can't really afford the time to experiment.
Any advice would be HUGELY appreciated. THANKS1

I usually just output a self-contained quicktime movie with current settings and then compress with bitvice.
That will provide the best quality ... the quality won't improve over what you had in FCP. Depending on your source media type(s), you may have had a better quality export IF you had edited and rendered with another setting.

  • Archived file too big for DVD

    Hello
I have created an archive file that looks to be 7.4 GB - obviously too big to fit on one DVD. Is there a way to put this file onto TWO DVD's, or do I have to try and make two files that are smaller in order to put them on DVD?
It doesn't look like the archive file is much smaller than the originals put together - there was an M4V (iPod movie - 163 MB), a disk image of the same (iDVD - 1.77 GB) and the original file from iMovie (6.6GB). I'm afraid that even if I split them up into two files, I won't be able to get the iMovie file onto one disk just by itself!
I really want them on a disk rather than an external hard drive - at the rate my son is making these movies, I'll have no space left really soon! Please help! Thanks.

"SuperDrive" is just Apple's term for their internal DVD writers. In the last couple of years, SuperDrives have been updated with DL-burning capability.
A "regular" single-layer DVD has around 4.7GB of capacity, which roughly translates to 90 minutes of video.
Commercial movie DVDs have long used the DL format, meaning that they can fit twice the length of video onto the disk. You will specifically need "DVD +R DL" disks to record this amount of data. Apple sells them, but you should also find them at good office stockists.
DVD players/readers can read both formats.

  • Movie file too big for DVD

I've just finished a short film using FCP HD 4.5. DV PAL 720x576 and i need to get it onto a DVD.
I exported it from FCP as a Quicktime movie and it weighs 5.41Go. How do i make it lighter to go on a DVD of only 4.7 Go? I tried reexporting it by using Custom settings in the window that pops up when ur about to export. In this window I tried to lower the quality from 100 to 75%. The resulting file was the same size. I tried to use a smaller resolution 600x480. File was same size. What is the secret to getting movies on DVD's?
The DVD needs to be able to work with a living room DVD player. Is Toast Lite 6.1 ok for doing this? In all that jungle of DVDs with R's and RW's and +/- etc etc what is my best bet for a DVD that can be seen by a majority of people? Would be grateful for any help, and in the meantime i'm going to check through the forum ... i'm sure i'm not the only one who's had this problem.
    Thanks

What is the secret to getting movies on DVD's?<<</div>
The secret? It's no secret at all ... its called compression. In particular, MPEG-2 compression.
Regular DV25 (DV/DVCam/DVCPro) takes up about 13gb per hour. Since a single layer DVD (DVD-5) only has about 4.3gb of space available, the video will have to be compressed to MPEG-2, which is the current standard format for standard definition DVD-Video. Since your final program is to be view on TV sets, you'll want to maintain the same settings, frame rate and resolution as you have in FCP.
    The process of compressing is also often called encoding. The basic process can be done from FCP via several methods;
    1. Export from FCP "Using QuickTime Conversion" (no longer available with QT 7) - select MPEG-2 from the format menu of the export dialog, then use the options button to specify bit rate and other parameters. The result will be an MPEG-2 (.m2v) file along with an AIF audio file of the same name. Normally you'll need to convert the AIF files into AC3 using APack (bundled with DVD-SP) in order to save room on the DVD for video and menus, etc.
    2. Export from FCP "Using Compressor." You can choose an appropriate preset or modify one to suit your needs. The result is the same as above so you'll still need to convert the AIF file into AC3. If you have Compressor 2, they've added the option of AC3 encoding so you won't have to use APack.
After you've done either 1 or 2 above, import the .m2v and AC3 files into DVD-SP for authoring, compiling (muxing) and burning.
Or you can export from FCP via "QuickTime Movie" (either self-contained or reference) then encode that file in Compressor or import it directly into iDVD or DVD-SP for encoding, authoring and muxing.
Toast and other third party programs can do MPEG-2 encoding, but in tests I've run, the quality of the compression from Toast was among the lowest.
so that it can be read both by an ordinary living-room dvd player (what's the english expression for that?!)<<</div>
We generally just call them DVD players or set top players.
In all that jungle of DVDs with R's and RW's and +/- etc etc what is my best bet for a DVD that can be seen by a majority of people?<<</div>
Don't use RWs for distribution - they have a much lower compatibility rate among DVD players. Currently -R has a very slight advantage over +R but the gap is so close it shouldn't make much of a difference with most later model DVD players.
I notice that the colour seems a little faded when i watch the DVD on my TV<<</div>
This can happen if your DVD player adds set up to the video signal output. Basically it increases the black level by about 7.5 IRE which has the effect of reducing contrast and can make colors start to look a little flat. Some models that do this have a black level control in their menu.

  • Export file too big! I need help.

I am trying to export a text book from pdf to word.  How do I export a file if it is too big?  Is there a way to export half? Or export certain pages?  I am not computer savvy so this may have an easy solution.

If the PDF file you're starting with is larger than 100MB, ExportPDF won't be able to convert it.
To convert a file of that size, you'll need Adobe Acrobat.  You'd need Acrobat to divide the file into smaller chunks for ExportPDF anyhow, so Acrobat is probably the best solution for you.  You can learn more about Acrobat here: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat.html

  • 28 minutes movie too big for DVD!!!

    Hi all
I have a 28 minutes movie in IMovie that I'm trying to burn on a DVD. Problem is size since the file is over 2G!!
Can't seem to find a way to shrink this file and since it seems I should be able to burn at least a 1 hour movie on a DVD, how to I do this ?
    Thanks

Be sure that your settings are for Best Quality and not Best Performance.

  • File too big for dvd???

I've just had a thought i'm currently working on my own 15 short film and I'm not even finished yet but i exported it out as i wanted to put the working movie on my itouch and then i saw that the file size so far it just around 5gb but my thought is when i come to my movie completed how i'm i going to be able to export and burn on to a dvd. If i use compressor to downsize the file surely its going to affect the quality of the movie???
I believe the final movie size will be under 10gb in total as i've added most of my motions ect ect but how i'm i going to deal with dvd pro come burning day??
    all the best guys
    MBPG

When i export do you think there would be a difference in file size if i make it self contained or just contained??
Well, there is no "contained." You can either have a "Reference" or "self-contained" movie. A referennce movie does just what it says, it references other files. So to answer your question, yes a reference movie will be much smaller, but it does not contain all of your movie. To use a reference movie you must be on the same computer you created it on and have access to all of your source media. It is not portable.
What settings do you use in compressor to maximize you movie quality but keep the quality high enough for enjoyment but keeping the size down to fit onto disk??
There are presets in Compressor that are a good place to get started, but compression is a science and an art. Only you can tell what looks the best. Sometimes trial and error is the only choice.
You would probably do well to crack open the manuals.

  • Backups in iPhoto too big for DVD but not in TOAST

    Hi all,
Recently I have wanted to backup my photos to DVD.
On a couple of occasions I have tried to do it in iPhoto but it tells me there are too many for the DVD to hold (DISC FULL) but if I drag the photos from the same album directly into TOAST, the DVD still has plenty of room to spare.
Am I doing something wrong here? Why is there room to spare if burning using TOAST but not if burning within iPhoto?
Just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong.
    THANKS!

When you burn from Toast, you're backing up ONLY the modified files. This is the same as exporting to the desktop and using the Finder to burn from the desktop. When you burn from INSIDE iPhoto, you're creating a miniature library, which includes the originals as well as the modified files.

  • My icons are big and display too big for screen.  help..

  • DVD Studio Project too big for DVD

Well, I've exported my video and audio out of FCP through compressor and got into DVD Studio.
The movie I'm making is a compiliation of the years 1991-2007 (family film), thou there were no film from some years. So I made a main meny with the buttons "Play Movie" and "Chapters", the "chapters"-button opens an other meny with buttons for all the years. The year-buttons is linked to the different chapters. ie. 1991 is chapter 1 and 1992 is chapter 2 etc.
So there are two menues, the main and the chapter. There is also a "return-to-main-meny"-button in the chapters meny. There are about 15 buttons total and I used the apple simple button for all of them. Then there are some backgound images and of course there is the video and the audio track.
The size of the video is 4,4Gb and the audio is 190Mb, so without the menues they fit on a DVD (4,7Gb) but the menues seems to take up too much space.
How can I make all of it fit to the DVD?

You can build the project and use VTS view to see how much they are taking but if you are applying transitions they can take up room since the transition is being built for each button. So in other words lets say you have picture 1 as a background on menu 1 and picture 2 as background on menu 2 with 15 buttons on the menus, 15 seperate transitions are being made even if each transition is identical.
In other words if you are using 15 transitions on each menu back and forth (or even less) you can go over the 20 Megs rights there (and if they are longer transitions in terms of time that will add more size.)
You can get around this by using dvdafteredit or other editor but not in DVD SP itself
You are pretty close even without the menus, so it can be pushing you over. Anyway what was the AC3 rate? Could get you under there also (and maybe deleting transitions in menus can also help.)
Also keep in mind that filling a disc fully (or very close) can cause issues.
So (depending on how you want to go)
1.) Delete transitions if you do not need/want them
2.) See if there is any room to knock down the audio at all
3.) Encode the video at a lower rate. (If you go this route I would suggest not trying to thread the needle too closely - meaning if the average rate was 5, let's say, in the original code, do not drop it to 4.9 or something, bring it down so you know you have some room, perhaps 4.75 for example, so you do not have to go back through the process.)
What was the total running time of the video? Check this out for calculations http://www.videohelp.com/calc.htm, then bring it down a tad to be safe.

  • 59 minute, 337 MB .mp4 file too big for DVD disc in iDVD 6???

Going crazy here!! I have several 59 minute TV shows that I would like to create a menu for & then burn on a DVD that I can then easily watch on my DVD player. The file was originally an .avi file in PAL format. I tried creating the menu using the 'Pass Through' theme and dragged one .jpg image to drop zone 2. I then used 'Add Movie' to create a drop zone, and dragged my 1st .avi file to it. Then, I checked the Project Info window and see that the DVD Capacity is already in yellow, saying it's at 3.3 of 4.2 GBs. Video Mode is NTSC (since I'm in the US), Aspect Ratio is Widescreen, Encoding is Best, Project Duration is 59:37 minutes, Motion Menus is 0:37, Tracks and Menus are both 1 of 99, and in the Media window my file is listed twice, once for video and once for audio.
I thought maybe the format or file type wasn't compatible. So, I then went back and used ffmpegx to re-encode my show twice. Both times to NTSC, once to .mov and once to .mp4. Tried it exactly the same way again for each, with exactly the same results.
I tried downloading Xilisoft's DVD Creator to see if it worked there. No problems AT ALL with the .mp4 versions. Was able to put 4 episodes on one disc on medium quality, but the menus leave a lot to be desired. I'd like to use iDVD. I've made beautiful Photo DVDs with it. What am I doing wrong???

    +What am I doing wrong???+
Did you switch to High Quality or Pro Quality encoding?

  • 2 gigs of .mov files too big for dvd?

I have 3 .mov files that I want to burn to a dvd. Each individual file is approx 700 meg or so. When I try and add the first file, it appears that it takes up 3.9g of 4g. Dragging the 2nd file in gives me the "Project Duration Error"
"Your project exceeds the maximum allowed content duration. You will not be able to burn your DVD while your Encoder Setting is Best Performance. This can be changed in your iDVD Preferences."
Changing that pref allows me to get the 2nd file on the dvd, but I can't get the 3rd file on the dvd without idvd complaining. Is there really that much overhead to make a dvd? I would think that with < 2g of media there should be no problem burning a dvd..
BTW-I have made sure that I checked that project->project info and set the size to a single layer dvd....
seems really difficult for something SUPPOSED to be easy
thanks in advance for any help....

ahhh, that is the problem then. I have 3 movies, each one is approximately an hour, so that must be why...
On another note, does anyone know if another application will allow me to write the 3hrs of video on 1 dvd? We have DVD studio pro, I figured iDVD would be quicker/simpler to get up and running with, so that is why I tried using that first...
    thanks again

  • Folder too big for DVD

If I try to Share - Burn a DVD of a folder and the size of the folder is larger than the capacity of the DVD, will it share it over several DVD's? Basically, we've had family visit who have taken photos and now I'm trying to burn them to a DVD for them.

    Terence,
Correct. It's only a replacement for the 'burn' part, when one's files exceed the capacity of a DVD.
I should use the shareware 'FileJuicer' to extract originals from an iPhoto Library; but, lacking that, one could try using a 'Smartfolder' to assist, unless the photos to burn must be selected individually.
Having iPhoto 5, I prefer to automatically move my photos using 'Image Capture' from my camera to 'Pictures', which is adjusted to the largest icon size, to preview them. I edit duplicates using the least difficult editor needed for the photo, then move one 'shoot' to a folder appropriately named. I have a text document with paragraphs of common keywords that I select, drag, & edit to the EXIF data in Preview (or later, in iPhoto); then I drag the happy folder to iPhoto. Because JPEGs are already compressed, I can archive 'Pictures' regularly (without its iPhoto Library) to optical media for relatives who have Linux or Windows.
iPhoto's greatest asset, to me, is its ability to fit many photos on a letter-sized piece of photo paper and print to paper well. (The photo canisters are cute, though.)

Right, so to advise you we'd need to know the particulars of MagCloud's spec for your project; format, trim size, bleed, etc.
It's doubtful that anything happened "when uploading for printing," so long as you were uploading a PDF, as opposed to the native InDesign file. Did the PDF look right to you before uploading?
