Best RAM for 990FX-GD80

I need to buy 8GB low-profile DDR3 for my new 990FXA-GD80 and was wondering if anyone could advise which will work and overclock (i.e. give the best speeds) with this board.
There's some 1.35v Mushkin Blackline for £36
or 1.65v Corsair XMS3 for £30
or 1.5v Corsair XMS3 for £41.76
I've also seen some 1.5v Crucial Rendition, which would be the cheapest at £26 for 8GB, but I think I'd prefer something with some sort of cover/heat spreader http://www.ebuyer.com/291000-crucial-4gb-ddr3-1333mhz-rendition-memory-module-cl9-1-5v-rm51264ba1339-rm51264ba1339
All of these are 9-9-9-24 sticks
I realise the Rendition is 1333Mhz whilst the rest are 1600Mhz, but the tests I've seen don't seem to show much benefit and there's no guarantee anything would run at 1600Mhz with a Phenom II X4 (which only officially supports 1333Mhz) anyway. If I recall correctly, running 1333Mhz with tighter timings (i.e. tighter than 9-9-9-24) gives more of a boost, so if anyone knows if any of the above (or something else) will run at tighter timings, that would be useful information as well.

Yeah, Corsair 1.5V LP and Vengeance LP are compatible, so they're options, although I'm not sure there's any reason to believe they'll be any better than Mushkin, which seems to be well regarded, particularly because every stick is hand-tested. If I understand you both correctly, you've had good experience with the Corsair but never tried it on the 990FX-GD80?
Bernhard, no doubt you're right that the size and shape of some heat spreaders is just a marketing gimmick, but I don't see any harm in people buying parts they like the look of, as long as they also work well and it's not generally any more expensive with heatspreaders. As you suggest that heatspreaders may be needed at 1.65v (and above), even if I'm buying 1.5v 1600Mhz I may want to overclock that, which may involve bumping the voltage to 1.65v+, so it seems sensible to get something with heatspreaders unless you're SURE that you're never going to want to run it any faster than 1.5v (and even then, it can't hurt to have something helping to conduct the heat away from the chips).
One of the reasons I'm attracted to the Mushkin 1600Mhz 1.35v 996988 is because I'd imagine that gives me more room to overclock/overvolt it, compared to 1.5v 1600Mhz RAM. I'm a bit confused though, as I've been told on the Mushkin forum that I'd get better overclocking potential with the 996995, which seems to be the same specs except it's 1.5v!

    Hello
Im wondering that you want to upgrade to 8GB RAM... Normally 3 or 4GB should be more as enough for all applicaions at the moment.
Anyway, as Jayjay said its not possible to upgrade to 8GB. A friend of me has a Satellite A300 and the user manual says that it can upgrade to 4GB or 2GB (depending on the chipset). So if you have a PM965/GM965/RS690M chipset you can upgrade it to 4GB. Otherwise you can only use up to 2GB.
I have upgraded my Toshiba notebook with Kingston RAM. This is high quality RAM and has a good compatibility. I never had problems with such modules.
    Check this!!

  • Best ram for macbook pro 2011?

I am thinking about upgrading my macbook pro 2011 with 8gb or 16gb (overkill?) of ram. Which is the best ram/bang for the buck?

I upgraded to Crucial 16 GB on my MB Pro 6 months ago and have never, ever, even once been sorry or less than amazed.
Of course, a Crucial 512 GB SSD does not hurt, either. They work together seamlessly.  Nice Mac, nice Mac.
12 seconds to boot up from full Shut Down? Too cool ............................................................................... ..
    Leonardosanti says.
PS FYI: My old Apple-supplied 500 GB hard drive is now separately enclosed and makes an excellent full backup. Using SuperDuper to clone, it is bootable albeit as a spinning disc hard drive it runs much slower. Had my old Snow Leopard system and files on it. Jumped to a clean install of Mountain Lion. Did all this myself, glad its done, whew, successfully. The Ram and the SSD are gems, like the Crucial support people.
PPS Yes, these were expensive improvements. Ouch but ... Worth it.

  • Best Ram for audio and video

This has probably been discussed here many times, I did a search and didn't really find an answer so here goes
What is the best ram to put in a G5 2.5 dual. does quality vary much from company to company. I have heard of a few horror stories about buying cheap ram and Apples pro apps (Logic) did not run properly. So for those of you that have been through it, let me know what your experiences are
    Thanks

Hello! Buy guaranteed ram from a reputable company such as Crucial or OWC. I've got cheap Kingston ram for a compaq for my G4 running 10.3.9 with no problems but I like to tinker and I'll try anything once. If you're not a tinkerer stick to the qualifications previous. Tom

XL's is verified by anand to top at 2-3-3 on DDR466 so this would be how much of a oce on a 3700sandy at those timings.
Well the 3700 San Diego har a max multilplier equals 11 and you can use the lower ones also .
So you have more options than one to reach say you set a goal for 2700mhz assuming you have air cooling (2.7ghz seems to be what most aim for without extreme cooling)
HTT reference clock at 233 with memory index 200 times multiplier 11 gives 2530mhz on the cpu and 233mhz/466DDR on the memory .
To maintain same memory speed (around or below 233mhz) with higher cpu frequency you must use a divider by setting max memory speed to 166 etc and use a higher HTT clock reference .
    E.g
    HTT=270
    Multiplier=10
    Memory index=166
    Gives CPU/12 divider
    CPU is then 2.7ghz
    Memory speed = cpuspeed/12 = 2700/12 = 225mhz or DDR450 .
    Multilplier memory index dividers:
    7x with 133 : cpu/11
    8x with 133 : cpu/12
    9X with 133 : cpu/14
    10x with 133 : cpu/15
    11x with 133 : cpu/17
    7x with 166 : cpu/9
    8x with 166 : cpu/10
    9X with 166 : cpu/11
    10x with 166 : cpu/12
    11x with 166 : cpu/13
    7x with 183 : cpu/8
    8x with 183 : cpu/9
    9X with 183 : cpu/10
    10x with 183 : cpu/11
    11x with 183 : cpu/13
    7x with 200 : cpu/7
    8x with 200 : cpu/8
    9X with 200 : cpu/9
    10x with 200 : cpu/10
    11x with 200 : cpu/11
( with 200 you will se the divider is the same as multiplier , thats why some calls this 1:1 )
There are also some tables for the dividers made by orcar wu over at extremesystems in this thread:
    http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=41595&highlight=a64+divider+table]
Using this calculation you can figure out your ram frequency before trying it in the bios .
E.g use 183 mem index/divider with cpu multiplier 10x with 2.7ghz as the target .
    10 x 270 = 2700
    memory will run at
    2700/11 = ~ 245mhz or DDR490

There aren't such known issues with that board. Your ram overclocking results depend on the cpu's ram controller. Not all will make 2133 as that is oc and oc is a matter of luck and the individual sample. To incerase your chances go for ddr3 oc lits only needing 1.5v for 2133 and not already 1.6v like the kit you found. Corsair is always a good idea like this one: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233245

  • Best Ram for MSI P965 Neo-F

    Hi
I've a MSI P965 Neo-F and i want to know what is the best DDR 2 Memory for this motherboard(G-Skill,Crucial or OCZ?).
Actually i' ve Corsair DDR 2 667 Mhz Value Select.
    Thanks^^

Actually Corsair does'nt work good with my PC(no boot sometimes) so i don't want Corsair...
I'm not saying buy Corsair, I am telling you to buy WINTEC AMPO  240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM 800. I have read all the horror stories about different ram and the Neo f. I installed 2gb [2x 1 gb] when i made the computer a couple years ago and just added the same thing 1 week ago and never a single problem. It still only reads as 3.25gb but that has been explained. Fast and stable memory with this board is hard to find, so trust me and buy this ram . it worked perfect for me so I don't see why it wouldn't work for you.

  • Best Ram Choice For P7N2 Diamond

Hi there people just need some expert advice on the best RAM for a P7N2 Diamond board. I am mainly interested in the Kingston HyperX series and would like to know what is the fastest ram they make that is compatible for this board.
Also they make SLI and T1 heat spreader model varients.
    Thanks in advance

Thanks for your reply. Would this ram be good:
    http://www.valueram.com/datasheets/KHX12800D3K2_4G.pdf
They also do the SLI ready ram which is clocked a little bit higher and has lower timmings.
Each module has been tested to run at DDR3-1600MHz at a low latency timing of 9-9-9-27 at 1.7V to 1.9V.
The SPDs are programmed to JEDEC standard latency DDR3-1066Mhz timing of 7-7-7-20 at 1.5V.
Think twice before buying something like that.

  • Satellite L300-22L - Which RAM for upgrade?

    Hello.
I have Satellite L300-22L notebook. Can you tell me which is the best RAM for my system in speed and capacity?

    Hi!
The Satellite L300-22L belongs to the PSLB8E series and is equipped with Intel GL40 chipset.
That means for upgrading the RAM you need modules with the specification DDR2 667MHz to a maximum of 4GB.
Theoretically you can buy modules with these specifications from every manufacture but I have good experience with Kingston modules. I use them always for upgrading my notebooks and never had problems.

    Whats the best ram for a AMD64 rig , with a 3800+ , and X800xt pe??
i thought of buying the Corsair TWINX XL 512*2 CL2, cuz of theyr tight timings. but isnt PC3200 the max for a MSI k8N neo 54 G ultra?, one guy told me that u can use better memorys like PC4400 if u update bios , is this true?

Best to refer to MSI's test report for the Neo2...I find it better to start with a sure thing when it comes to memory. That way I know the system is good....then I may tinker with timings, or totally different RAM!!!!

Based on the information that you have supplied, you have a Early or Late 2008 MBP.  Maximum RAM that it will accept is 6 GB with the following specifications:   200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM.
The best sources for Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.

Yes, I read the figure 128 in regards to the benefit. Something about interleaving, maybe?
In doing a Google search for that article I saw, I found this:
    http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/apple-notebooks/99215-4gb-ram-my-macbook.html
the maximum amount of RAM your laptop can take is 3.3GB. So while you can physically insert 4GB of RAM, OS X will only be able to see 3.3GB of it.
But I don't know how knowledgeable that poster is who says it can utilize 3.3 GB. I do know that the full 4 GB shows up in the System Profiler on my MacBook Core 2 Duo 2.16 GHz.
