Best RAM to buy for a 27" 2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7?

Dear all
I'm brand new to Apple computers and would therefore appreciate any advice you can offer relating to RAM.
I will soon be purchasing a 27" 2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 complete with 2TB hard drive.
I also plan on purchasing 2x4gb RAM sticks separately but from reviews that I've read I see that not all ram is created equally...
Thus far I have discovered the following brands: Kingston, Komputerbay and Crucial. I would be most obliged if someone could let me know what the best brand is for the ram... I have found Komputerbay to be the cheapest but I've read a review from someone who said they didn't find it to be a good performer so that made me think it's best to pay a bit more.
Thank you for reading and I look forward to hearing your replies
Kind regards
Kate
P.S. I'm based in the UK

Dear all
Thank you for your prompt responses - most appreciated!
Roger, I was particularly pleased with your answer as last night (after much internet research) I decided to go with Crucial... They were also offering a 10% off 'one day only' discount which seemed too good to miss! I purchased the RAM for a good price: £198 including discount for 2x4gb sticks - the same RAM averaged £250 on Amazon.
I will be ordering the iMac on Friday. Doubtless I will be back online thereafter to clarify that I have installed the RAM correctly; I haven't ever installed RAM before but given how easy it looks and the cost savings involved I thought I'd have a crack at it!
In total I will be running with 12gb RAM - no idea whether I actually need that much or not but I'd rather buy the best of everything from the outset so that I don't need to tweak things at a later date... Also thought a high amount of RAM would be advantageous given the screen size etc.
Again, thanks to you all.

  • Best PC to buy for Photoshop CS5, Premiere Elements and Proshow Producer

I am looking for a new PC to replace my 10 year old one.
This would be used primarily for Photoshop CS5, Lightroom, Premiere Elements and Proshow Producer.
I am thinking of going to Digital Storm to get one of their top line gaming machines with Sandybridge cpu, high end video card and at least 16 to 32 gb Ram
(although I do not play games on the pc}.
Is this overkill, or would a different kind of PC be better?
    what do you recommend?

I'm definitely going to look into it. Thanks. Have a great holiday.

Dell Precisions are great machines, you could look into their Studio or Studio XPS too. Not quite workstation qualtiy but I'm beating the snot outta one @home and it's holding up well for a 600 buck eBay chassis...

  • RAM Update to 8 or even 16GB on MacBook Pro 13-inch 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 mid 2012?

    Hey folks,
i heard and read rumours, that it is possible to update the ram of the MacBook Pro 13" (mid 2012/no retina) to a double 8GB RAM, making it 16GB.
    Which would be great, right?
Apple says on the support website that all the MacBooks 13" are only able to hold two 4GB making it 8.
Currently I only have the standard two times two 4GB.
So i was wondering, since I found this Crucial PC3-12800 DDR3 1600MHz 8GB SODIMM on the Internet if that's a fit for the rumours.
    It says on the site:
    "Guaranteed compatible with:
    MacBook Pro 13-inch 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 mid 2012
Now, has any one experience with this one?
Maybe this memory will plug both slots and that's why it says compatible?
you find the website here: http://www.macdimms.com/Crucial-PC3-12800-DDR3-1600MHz-8GB-SODIMM_p_123.html
    appreciate the help.

It won't plug both spots. To get 16 GB you will have to buy 2 sticks, one for each slot.
Apple only recommends and will suport 8 and recommends installing in pairs - so 2 slots of 4 GB each. You can always try the 2 slots of 8 and see if they will work. I would recommend ordering from crucial direct. They are one of the better memory companies around and have a website at crucial.com.
You shouldn't have any issues as the maximum non-Apple supported config is 16 GB.
    Good luck.

  • I have macbook pro 13 inch 2.9GHz Dual-core Intel Core i7 with 8GB RAM can I upgrade my ram to 16 GB?

I Have bought The new MacBook Pro 13-inch:
    2.9GHz dual-core Intel Core i7
    Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
    8GB 1600MHz memory
    750GB 5400-rpm hard drive1
    Intel HD Graphics
My Q: Can I upgrade my memory ram from 8GB to 16GB ?

Sure. Make sure that you buy the RAM specified for your computer - 204-pin PC3-12800 (1600 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMMs - and purchase from a reputable dealer such as Crucial, OWC, etc.
You can go to the Crucial website and use the System Scanner app to get the correct RAM for your unit.

Buying a new Macbook Pro. Deciding b/w this add on:
    2.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7 vs.
    2.5GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7?
Is it worth the extra $250?
    What's the big difference? Thanks.

Upgrade RAM yourself through macsales.com for $60.  Use the remaining $140 of Apple's mmeory price and upgrade for $150 to hi-res (1680x1050) and anti-glare.  I never regretted that upgrade on mine.
    My humble opinion.
Sorry ... I just did the math and that puts you $10 out of pocket ...

Officially 16GB however OWC has advised it will support 32GB. BTW you can trust OWC, they are a reliable vendor that specializes in Macs. They test everything the either make or sell. Also they have terrific support and will ship internationally.

  • Suitable ethernet cable for my new Imac 27-inch iMac 3.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 and old imac 1 GHZ PowerPC G4

I am looking for a Suitable ethernet cable for my new Imac 27-inch iMac 3.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 (Mavericks 10.9.4) & old imac 1 GHZ PowerPC G4 (10.4.11) for transfering files, documents, photos into my new intel mac from my old power PC imac.
Can anyone please advise me which suitable ethernet cable would be suitable for tasks.
    Many thanks
    Niall

Note, the iMac G4 1 Ghz only supports 10/100 base-T.  Firewire is up to 4 faster with a cable such as this one:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/HA833ZM/A/belkin-firewire-800400-9-pin6-pin-ca ble-2-m66-ft
    and adapted to this one:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD464ZM/A/apple-thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapte r
    http://www.macsales.com/ may offer cheaper cables.
And since you are migrating from a G4, be sure to make your files portable to newer data formats before transferring.  Old Appleworks/Clarisworks files are not compatible:

  • Looking at buying an 3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 iMac.....NEED HELP!

Ok so I'm thinking about switching to Mac from PC and I need help. Here is what I plan on getting:
    3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
    8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM
    2TB Serial ATA Drive
    AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB GDDR5
    My questions are:
    1. How long has this configuration been out? i.e. how soon will Apple upgrade the iMac to better CPU and GUI?
    2. Can you add a SSD later?
    3. Without being able to add a New GUI (and other upgrades you can do with a PC) how long would this iMac last with the way technology advances?
    4. What problems if any are the iMac experiencing right now?

    jbrownlow wrote:
I guess I should rephrase the question. How long has the 3.4 i7 and AMD Radeon 6970M been available in the iMac? What I don't wont to do is get the 3.4 i7 and next week a 3.6 comes out etc. I read the same thing from http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#iMac
This machine was released in May 2011. The configuration you are quoting is currently state of the art for an iMac. Without knowing how you use your computer it's extremely difficult to say how long it will be useful. If you are professional musician or filmmaker where you tax the CPU's capabilities then spending the money when a significantly faster machine is released should make little difference to you. However if use the machine for basics like surfing the web, e-mail and some MS Office work this machine is overkill now and will be for many years. If you use the machine primarily as a gaming platform then you would enjoy it as long as the GPU keeps up with your gaming demands.
So the question back to you is how do you intend to use the computer?

  • Which crucial RAM for a new iMac 27" 3.6 Intel Core i5? 1st time buyer

    Hi,
I'm thinking about buying the new iMac 27" 3.6 Intel Core i5 and was thinking about getting it with the standard 4 GB of RAM from the apple store, and then adding another 12 GB for a total of 16 GB of RAM. This is the RAM from crucial:
    http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=iMac%203.6GHz%20Intel%20Core%2 0i5%20%2827-inch%20-%20DDR3%29%20Mid%202010&pl=Apple&cat=RAM
I have never bought RAM separately before. What happens to the 4 GB that are already in the iMAC? Do you just buy 12 GB and add it to the existing 4 GB, or do you buy 2 packages of 8 GB and install those two after removing the existing 4 GB? Could someone please advise me which RAM packages I need to buy to max out my RAM? Thank you for your assistance!!
    Tim

Do you think it would be worthwhile to sell the 4 GB of RAM that comes with the iMac to decrease the cost buying the 3rd party RAM?
That depends on what you plan to upgrade to, if you are going take it all the way to 16GB I'd probably hold onto the old RAM for few weeks just to ensure everything is safe and sound but don't expect to get much for it. If you buy the RAM from OWC they will give you a trade in value for it and that's something to investigate.
Will adding this new RAM void apple care warrantees?
Of course not, you can download a copy of the manual from the Support site and also get a copy of the warranty. In the manual it will have detailed instructions on how to upgrade RAM, Apple wouldn't put that in there if upgrading RAM would impair the warranty. In the warranty it clearly says if any damage is done that would void the warranty. About the only way you do damage is to pour coffee on the RAM slots while you're upgrading or hammering them in with a ball peen.

  • HT203296 No solution listed for 27" iMac running 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5

    I have a 27" iMac, Mid 2011.
    Model Identifier iMac12,2
The processor is a 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5.
    I am running OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50)
    Boot ROM Version is IM121.0047.B1F
    SMC Version (system) is 1.72f2
I have installed Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac Build 7.0.15055 (Revision 740667; March 5, 2012)
I have created a virtual machine running Windows Server 2008 r2 Enterprise with SP1.
I am attempting to enable Hyper-V on this server.
When I attempt to do so, the Add Roles Wizard in Server Manager returns the following error:
    Hyper-V cannot be installed
The processor on this computer is not compatible with Hyper-V.  To install this role, the processor must have a supported version of hardware -assisted virtualization, and that feature must be turned on in the BIOS.
Parallels take on the issue is summed up on this thread:
    http://forum.parallels.com/thread3273.html
    Apple has the following information:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2744
I have just gotten off the phone with a senior tech support representative from Apple.  He is elevating my support request to an engineer, who hopefully will not tell me that this is a Parallels issue, and Apple doesn't provide support for Parallels.  I should receive a response in four business days.
    I figure it's one of three things...V
VT-X support is disabled on this machine. (Solution, Apple releases an EFI that enables it.)
VT-X support is enabled on this machine, but Parallels thinks it is not. (Solution, switch to Virtualbox?)
VT-X support is enabled on this machine, but the virtual machine is emuilating a processor that does not support it (Solution, read the fabulous manual)
I'd love to hear from anyone who may have a solution to this.  If I get more information, I will update this post.
P.S. - Why isn't there an option for Mac OS X v10.7.3 Lion in the "You Must Choose a Community" pulldown menu for this form?
I have run sysctl -a | grep machdep.cpu.features from terminal, and I see that my processor supports VT-X.  Yet, my virtual server says my processor doesn't support it.  Help?

No solution - but I have the same problem.  Using iMac 27 inch 3.1 Ghz Lion 10.7.3 Parallels Desktop 7. All software updates are current.
Also checked with run sysctl command and have VT-X supported.
Within the windows environment I have software that checks for periodic errors.  It now shows a bios error "Consider upgrading your bios".  This message does not show on the actual WIN PC.  Both environments are identical, as I just migrated and have not made any changes to either the PC or the VM.
    Hope the additional info helps.
