Best results when changing RGB to CMYK

Hi There,
How can I get the best results when converting a RGB to CMYK? For example, a tif visual when offset printing... Is there any programme, plug in, machine for this?
Many thanks

I agree with Marco U.
I might have said: only use Perceptual if an extremely important color in a photo changes terribly using Relative Colorimetric -- otherwise use that. The reason: The former method can make the whole picture shift (usually yellower and weaker) but the latter can make several distinctly different colors (like 3-5 different reds for example) and make them the same. Usually, one or two really strong colors can get shifted somewhat, but won't be noticeable in an otherwise great looking image.
The secret to converting for good print color is to choose the source and target correctly.
If you are serious about color, buy the book "Real World Color Management" by Bruce Fraser, Chris Murphy and Fred Bunting.
http://www.amazon.com/Real-World-Color-Management-2nd/dp/0321267222/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF 8&s=books&qid=1198178251&sr=1-1
Sadly, Bruce Fraser passed away, so the book may not go to a third edition. But you can still get the second edition and the first 5 or 6 chapters are an education in themselves.

  • Why does Illustrator automatically change RGB and CMYK values

Hi, I am struggling to understand why Illustrator is changing the values inside the RGB and CMYK boxes. I am also not sure of the exact relationship between these values. Essentially, it appears that if you set the Document Color Mode to RGB, it leaves the RGB values that you type in alone. If you set the Document Color Mode to CMYK, it leaves the CMYK values alone.
But as soon as you change the Color Mode, it automatically modifies the values. So if you were in RGB mode and you set some RGB values, it changes those RGB values when you switch to CMYK mode. And vice versa.
I had thought that the CMYK palette was a subset of the RGB palette. It would make sense to me if it did this when I switched from RGB to CMYK mode, but it doesn't make sense to me why it does this when I switch from CMYK to RGB mode.
The other thing I am confused about is the relationship of the values in the RGB boxes to the values in the CMYK boxes. I would have thought that the relationship between them would be static. Actually, it is not. When I am in CMYK mode and I enter a CMYK value of 90 16 0 0, the RGB values become 0 158 222. But when I switch over to RGB mode, the RGB values of 0 158 222 result in CMYK values of 75 23 0 0.
    Very confusing.
Thanks in advance if you can explain this behavior!

An Ai document can be either RGB or CMYK. The colors follow the document color mode and thus are converted immediately if they don't match.

It's not. CMYK color spaces (there are more than just one) are normally smaller than RGB color spaces, but they aren't a "subset".

When Illustrator converts the colors, it uses color management: the profiles you set up and the methods you set up. After converting it forgets the color that used to be. When converting "back", it uses color management again.
When you convert an very bright RGB color, it be out of the CMYK gamut. So it get's converted to the closest possbile CMYK color (which might still be far away from the original color. But it's not possible to convert it "back" to the bright one unless you just revert the conversion (by Cmd/Ctrl + Z).

  • Problem when converting RGB to CMYK in illustrator CC

Today I realized I had my document in RBG mode rather than CMYK. I am drawing die lines over a CMYK TIFF file placed in the document. When I try to convert my illustrator document color mode from RGB to CMYK everything in the document goes white - including the CMYK TIFF file that I have placed in it.
I can highlight the paths and see them only when they are highlighted but Illustrator will not allow me to select a new color for them.
In older versions of Illustrator I have had it would seamlessly convert to CMYK without changing everything to white.
I tried creating a new document with CMYK color mode and pasting the items in and it still goes all white.
In illustrator CS3 it converts just fine from RGB to CMYK with no image loss and no color loss on my dieline paths. but because my version of CS3 is acting crazy it won't allow me to save files from it
    any help appreciated!!
    thank you so much

    hi monika!
no they are just plain old paths in black. and the TIFF file is just a regular TIFF file that is being placed on the bottom layer.
    thanks for any help!!

  • Rich black when converting RGB to CMYK

I'm working in an older version of PhotoShop (7) but any help on the topic would definitely help.
My problem is that I am converting RGB native images to CMYK and my Key (Black) comes out rich, contains equal levels of CMY and K, instead of true black, only k.
Currently my way around this is to do the standard convert to profile CMYK and with my path selected to the section I would like to be true black simply turn off all CM and Y channels and re-save the image but this is a little labor intensive.
Is there a way that I can go straight from RGB to CMYK and achieve true black without alteration?

Yes, there is. You can use a CMYK setup or ICC CMYK profile that uses Maximum black generation. Unfortunately, that will almost always hose anything photographic in your image.
Is it typographical elements that are becoming four color? If so, then they should be done in a page layout program where they can be rasterized separately from the photographic image. If it is type you're worried about, is it large type or small? If you have to set large type in Ps, then it's probably fine to let it run four color.
If it were me and I had to do everything in Ps, I would probably make two conversions of the file to CMYK - one with a standard black generation and one with Max K. I would then select the black you want from the max K version and paste into the K channel of the "normal" document, and then use that as a selection to delete from the other three channels.
A third way is to do type in Ps and leave the type as a vector type layer, then save the file out as a Photoshop PDF, which is then placed in a layout app. or just sent to the printer through his RIP. That should work too, but there are too many places for things to wrong for my taste.

  • Change RGB to CMYK in InDesign CC

I can't find the option in the swatch panel anymore. How can I change the colors to CMYK?

The option is still there in the same place, it's just when you click on the swatch options and go to colour mode RGB looks as though it's sitting at the top of the pallette, however you just need to scroll up to reveal the other colour options

  • Best practice when changing a lot of forms

    Hi gurus,
if you have a lot of forms to manipulate and a lot of logic to change, what would be the best practice ?
Making some manipulation objects would be a nice thing. When I think of about 200 items or more on nearly every standard-form in B1 not included the logic behind, my brain gets dizzy
So there's no way than to keep the code clean and structured. Am I right ????
What about VB-Classes ?? I'm not sure about the stability of VB.net classes in bigger projects. C# would be nice, but isn't supported as I have in mind.
Does anyone have experience with big B1 VB.net projects especially concerning the stability of B1 and the resulting performance ?!?!?!???

  • Why do the relative values of RGB and CMYK change when switching between Photoshop and InDesign?

I'm trying to put together a Colour Guide for my company's brand guidelines.
I initially worked from InDesign and wrote down all the H, RGB, and CMYK values that I got when I eye-dropped my original colour palette.
However when I put the same RGB values into Photoshop- I am given a (slightly) different set of CMYK numbers from those that I had originally documented in InDesign.
    Why is this???

    Jamie,
in Photoshop go to Edit > Color Settings and choose your  parameters:
For RGB: sRGB or AdobeRGB (1998)
For CMYK: the process as recommended by your printer (person, company)
For offset printing this is here ISOCoated-v2-eci and elsewhere for instance SWOP.
For digital printing you should ask the company as well.
    For Grayscale: Gray Gamma 2.2
For Spot: probably irrelevant in the moment. Dot Gain 20%
    Everything as shown here:
For your application I've modified my settings a little, therefore we can see top left 'unsynchronized'.
In InDesign do practically the same, but there are no settings for Grayscale.
You'll find for any topic explanations if you move to by mouse (position the pointer over ...).
The field 'Settings' shows not 'Custom' but the file name of a configuration which had been previously saved
and then loaded (buttons top right).
Further explanations on request. It would be quite useless to explain everything now at the same time.
The colors will be wrong if the settings are not synchronized. Above they are explicitly synchronized.
Because Bridge was not used, the system considers them as 'not synchronized', which doesn't matter.

  • Color profile when changing from RGB to CMYK

I prefer to work on images in RGB then change to cmyk once I'm sure i won't need to run any more effects or filters on them. When I save an image the first time, I have the option to embed my color profile with the image. It embeds the RGB profile... the only option as long as I'm working in RGB. What I've noticed though, is that after converting to cmyk, I don't get any warnings or other indication that it needs me to embed the color profile. I need to do a save-as in order to get back to that option.
So the question is... does Photoshop automatically switch to my default CMYK color profile when I convert to CMYK? So when I save, it's now using the CMYK profile?

    Save your original RGB file.
Then, RGB file > Edit > Convert to Profile (with CMYK#1) > Save As...
This creates your first CMYK file.
Then, back to original RGB file > Edit > Convert to Profile (with CMYK#2) > Save As...
This creates your second CMYK file.
Then, back to original RGB file > Edit > Convert to Profile (with CMYK#3) > Save As...
This creates your third CMYK file.
In all cases, be sure you have "Embed Color Profile" checked at the bottom of the Save As dialog. When naming a file, it's handy to include some sort of indication as to the color space.
In the end, you have four files: 1 RGB file, 3 CMYK files.

Yes, it will be a problem. Convert the images in Photoshop using the printer's color profiles or a standard CMYK profile.

  • Change RGB images in PDF to CMYK

    I'm using Acrobat 8 Pro.
I've received several PDFs (one-page ads) that contain RGB images. What's the best way to convert them to CMYK?
I know how to do the edit image thing that opens the image in Photoshop, but I can't figure out how to get the "edited" image back into the PDF after I convert it to CMYK in PS.
Or is there an easier way? When I get a PDF with spot colors, I just go into the ink manager thing and convert all spots to process. Anything similar for converting RGB?
    TIA,
    Marlene

Given you have Acrobat 8 Pro you shouldn't be doing such a complicated sequence of steps...
    Instead, either
    - use the (interactive) color convert feature (Advanced/Print production/Convert colors...)
    - or try Preflight (Advanced/Preflight...) which beginning with Acorbat 8 offers "fixups" - with which many things can be achieved, among others also color conversion (same underlying 'machine' as the aforementioned "convert colors" - but with the possibility to save and reuse configurations for the conversion).
    - same as before but even go a step towards automation: set up a batch sequence, and process a whole folder with PDFs; or create a Droplet in Preflight, and drag'n drop your PDFs onto the droplet.

  • VA01 ATP incorrecct results when delivery date is programmatically changed

    Hi Guru's,
When creating or modifying a sales order (VA01 & VA02), we need to programmatically assign the delivery date a) for certain customers or b) when the delivery priority is changed from downs to regular order and visa-versa. For examples: 1) user enters a delivery date 02/01/2012, the program (userexit_check_vbep) will automatically replace it with a calculated
date (i.e.. 2/20/2012). 2) if user changes the delivery priority from regular order to a downs order, the program will automatically replace delivery date to current date.
But are getting incorrect ATP results when requested delivery date (based on what user enters in VBAP-LPRIO "delivery priority") is programmatically changed and then user manually enters the date and run ATP (see steps 8 & 9 below).
    VA01 execution steps:
    1) Used VA01 and entered a material of quantity 1, requested date 2/01/2012, delivery priority = regular. Date was overwritten automatically with program calculated date 2/20/2012 as expected.
    2) ATP automatically ran successfully for the initial entry.
    3) I then changed the delivery priority from regular order to downs order & requested delivery date was automatically changed to current date 02/01/2012 as expected.
    4) ran ATP manually and all is well.
    5) I then changed the delivery priority back to a regular order and date was automatically changed back to 02/20/2012 as expected.
    6) I ran ATP manually and again all is well.
    7) I then manually changed the delivery date 02/25/2012.
    Incorrect / bad results:
    8) ATP then passed back 2 sub-items lines with the quantity of 1 each. The quantity on the main line item is doubled to 2.
    9) I then tried to delete the main line item manually to start all over, but the transaction just hangs because it tries to go to ATP, but cannot resolve what to delete.
Do you have any suggestions to help resolve this?
The following SAP user-exits were modified:
    a) MV45AFZB
      1) userexit_check_vbap
      - for certain customers (a custom "override days" field stored in VBAP is populated), delivery date is automatically calculated using this field (i.e.  current date + override days).   If user entered date < calculated date,   calculated date is used (xvbep-edatu).
      - If user changes delivery priority, xvbep-edatu will be set automatically to either the calculated date (regular order) or current date (downs order).
      2) userexit_check_vbep : if user enters a delivery date (vbep-edatu), it is checked against calculated delivery date & overwritten, if it is < calculated date.
    b) MV45AFZZ - userexit_move_field_to_vbap :
      - override days is determined & delivery date is automatically calculated. If user entered date < calculated date, calculated date is used (xvbep-edatu).
      - If user changes delivery priority, xvbep-edatu will be set automatically to either the calculated date (reg.order) or current date (downs order)
Reason for updating xvbep: if only vbap-lprio or vbap-override (custom field) fields are changed, the VBEP user exit routines (userexit_move_field_to vbep or userexit_check_vbep)  do not run.  Change to xvbep does trigger userexit_check_vbep.
    Please advise.
    Joe

This is not an SD question and should be moved to ABAP forum. It seems to me that the issue is not with incorrect ATP but with the subitems / main item updated incorrectly. This needs to be resolved by a developer who wrote the user exit. Most likely either a user exit is triggered when not expected or a wrong line updated, etc. Debugger should be helpful.
Also instead of setting delivery priority, why can't the users just change the delivery date to current date? This seems just as easy to me...

  • Best Practice RGB to CMYK ?

Can some of you guys that work with print, point me at a decent link for a best practice workflow going from RGB to CMYK?   This is for outputting a large graphic that contains a number of RGB colour photographs, for imput into Indesign, and export to PDF for print in a newspaper advert.  I have the paper's requirements.  The job in question is not colour critical, but I would like to feel better informed.

    Trevor,
CMYK is a darned narrow color mode, even narrower than the  sRGB profile.
Of course you're bound to see some of your RGB colors just die in your image during the conversion.  That is the nature of the beast, and that's where soft-proofing with the target profile comes to the rescue, partially, by letting you fine tune the colors to compensate (somewhat).
Just look at all those greens, blues and reds outside of the CMYK spectrum.
