Best (safest) way to label photos?

Hi,
I have an iMac running OS X 10.6.8.
When my previous iMac G5 started to conk out, it disconnected my photo library from iPhoto; when the library was reconnected with iPhoto, all the photo labelling I had one in iPhoto was lost (several thousand photos).  Also prior to that, I when I attempted to back up my photos on DVDs (problematic enough in itself with the iMac G5 not accepting the DVDS most of the time), the labelling I'd done in iPhoto did not come across to the back up.  (I guess I realize now that I was not really labelling the file in iPhoto; I was probalby only labelling a display of the file?)
Anyway, to prevent this happening again with this computer, what is the recommended way of labelling photos?  On the hard drive (Finder)?  If so, what is the best way of doing this?  I need to see the photo to be apply the right label to it.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I restored them to iPhoto as per advice from Apple Support, however none of the titles, description, keywords, etc. came along with them.
How did you restore them?
As it is right now, with +12000 photos in iPhoto on this new machine, searching on the title doesn't work very well.  It, sometimes, eventually, gets me to the search phrase, but it seems it's past its capacity.
How are you searching?
So, are you saying that if I export batches of photos out of iPhoto to the hard drive, the titles, etc. in iPhoto will write to the files?
It will if you tell it to. Note the options in the Export dialogue.
The point in all of this - "I copied files to disk, copied them back" is all about how you did these things. What disk? Did you write the metadata to the files? If not, well then... If so, was it a DVD? and so on

  • Is there a way to label photos

I would like to orden my trip photographs and label the towns/sites/events. Can I do that in iPhoto?

    Lots of ways:
Using Places you can locate the photos on a Map.
In the Info Pane you can lable the images with a Title, Description or keywords
Do you mean you want to write this data on the face of the photo?

I just had home movies converted to a DVD format a realize now that I need another step to burn them to my computer.  This is for a Christmas present!  Help.

I don't think you need to use a ripper program to read a home movie DVD. Those are primarily for copy-protected commercial DVDs, right?
I think you just need to transcode the DVD files using a utility like Handbrake, which is free and fast.

  • Best/Safest way to P2V a SBS 2008 Server to sit on Hyper V

We have used Double Take when we did our P2V migrations to Hyper-V. We did it during office hours and didn't get any downtime.

After doing a lot of searching I managed to find that Microsoft have released an updated Version of MVMC (Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter 3.0). This new version now includes the ability to do a Live Physical to Virtual conversion.Previously they had removed this feature from SCVMM 2012 R2 and as a result I was going to do a Disk2VHD of the SBS 2008 server and then load that into Hyper V.But after doing more research I am thinking that doing a Live P2V on a SBS 2008 is risky as its got Exchange, SharePoint and other programs that change constantly.I am worried that even if I disconnect the server from the network and P2V it that something might change and I won't get a 100% carbon copy.As such I am thinking of taking an image of the Server using something like Acronis True Image Universal Restore boot CD and then restoring the image...

  • Safest way to transition between iPhones

    Hi,
I have an iPhone 4 and will soon be upgrading to a 5s.
My question here pertains to the fact that I want to wipe the old phone clean, i.e., get all my info off it (purchased apps, data, etc) unlock it (I am out of contract and now changing carriers). then offer it for sale (since it is in in pristine condition and will help me pay for new one).
I wonder how to do best wipe the phone clean to prepare it to sell without risking losing any data too soon that is needed for my new phone.
I also wonder about best, safest way to get data (including important data in certain apps) onto my new phone?
    A few related questions:
Can iTunes distinguish between two iPhones?
If I plug in iPhone 4 and hit restore, what happens?
After I  have figured out (with help of this forum) how to get my info off my present phone, can I—and is it a good idea—to install IOS7 (might that make phone more appealing?)
    THANKS!
    A.
PS.  I was not going to raise question of unlocking on this forum but if anyone wants to offer advise or guidance about that, it's most welcome!

    Thank you, Petvas.
I am attempting the update to ISO 7 (0.3) as I type.  previously, I got a message that there was not enough room.  (one reason for my other question on the forum about how to delete voice memos).
    You wrote:
As soon as you get your new iPhone, you can reset the previous one. This can be done in the settings of your iPhone.
Now, put the SIM card in the new phone, connect it per USB with iTunes and when asked if you want to set up your phone as new, or restore from backup, select to restore from backup. iTunes will prompt you to select from a list of backups. Select the latest and click on next.
I will be getting a phone sent from APPLE set up to work with Verizon (no sim card for me to install, far as I know)?    I imagine that I will just connect new phone to iTunes and restore from backup?
My other question is: after I have done the above and set-up new phone from backup, how do I remove all my data from the iPhone4 so that all that is left is latest OS and native apps and nothing more?
Also, I am still curious about the difference between a computer back up and an icloud backup?
    Thanks!

  • Best way to organize photos and home video

Looking for the optimum way to organize photos and home videos. Goal is to have all devices have equal access to all the media. Just as important is for this to be as easy as possible to maintain and use.
Have an iMac with iTunes and iPhoto
Have multiple iOS devices with different family members each of whom take photos and videos with their devices
    Have multiple Apple TVs
iMac will be the hub with wifi synching
Right now about 30,000 files probably 1000 are videos (and growing)
I don't do any editing of photos or videos
Current set up is through iPhoto. I am importing all images not using the reference option. This worked fine until we started taking more videos which made for a large 200gb iPhoto library which barely loads even with 16gb ram.
I want to use iPhoto not iTunes because I keep everything organized by event, that includes photos and videos. And I don't want 2 separate organizing options to keep track of.
Most of my library is also available outside of iPhoto, I have a back up so I could use the reference feature of iPhoto which would mean a smaller library. However we use photostream on all iOS devices which has the feature that automatically imports into iPhoto. So I don't have to worry about those photos - it's easy. But then i would have some media copied into the library and some referenced. This doesn't work for videos so I will need to copy them.
I have a copy of iPhoto library manager software which could solve the excessive library size. That's cumbersome because I have to sync the correct library with the iOS devices and also make sure photostream is In the right library. I have only used this software a little so I could be wrong about this solution.
I appreciate any ideas that might work. Of course let me know if I am missing something, I am sure I am.
Would Aperture be a better solution? Some other software?

1 - do not change to a referenced library with iPhoto - it has many problems and should not be done - if you switch to Aperture it is ok - Aperture handles referenced libraries fine
2 - iPhoto does not load your entire library and while 200 GB is large it is not giant and is not causing you an problems - if you ave problems please describe them and  will try to help with thme -it is not libary size - My library is 263 GB and I have 8GB of RAM and there are no issues
3 - not sure what your constraints are but for me having all IOS devices logged into iCoud using the same Apple ID work best - the downside is that we all see the same things - which is our desire and I think yours

  • What is the best way to manage photos - Dropbox (with sync), Facebook (with sync), iPhoto, etc.?

With so many cloud based and wireless syncing services, I'm lost as to the simplest way to keep photos sync'd as well as backed up. My dropbox is currently syncing all photos I take with my iphone, but in an overall folder called CAMERA UPLOADS, so they are uncategorized. I upload pics to facebook, which facebook also has a sync photos feature, but I don't necessarily want all photos uploaded to facebook. What has worked best for everyone so that there aren't a ton of dupicate photos everywhere, and multiple syncs of the same photos?
Also, what is the best way to manage my iPhone photos generally? I'm never sure if I delete a photo from my phone, does it delete it on my computer via iCloud? Sometimes I just take a picture to send to a friend that I don't need to keep, while others are ones I want to sync to my computer. Can I control when deleting that it be deleted everywhere or just on the device? And alternately, can I choose certain photos not to sync via iCloud?
iCloud makes me nervous. Once when I wanted to place all photos of my pup into a folder, I selected the photos on my iPhone and accidentally clicked delete instead of move. No big deal, I figured they'd be at home sync'd on the cloud. But since I'd deleted them on my phone, the cloud deleted them on my home computer too and the photos were lost.

I am presuming that we cannot share downloaded apps and music between accounts because of the copyright issue,
Though I'm no copyright lawyer, as long as it's within a household, you can share content among users. Such sharing is, absent specific language preventing it not present in the iTunes Store terms of use, generally considered to be "personal use". So you can share apps and music amongst your users on your computer and with their devices. You just can't give any of that content to friends or relatives who don't live with you.
What I am not clear on, it making sure that this appears in each itunes account - is it easy to find the file storage folders that match the itunes accounts and what would these be?
The iTunes library and files are by default in a user's Home/Music folder. But you don't have to find the folder; in fact putting a file into the folder yourself won't add the file to iTunes. Just drag the file into the iTunes window. iTunes will copy it to the correct location.

  • Best way to prepare photos for iPhoto printed book

    Hello,
I was wondering what would be the best way to prepare photos for iPhoto printed book on a Macbook Pro so to achieve the most realistic results to what's on the screen
ie. which software should I use to change photos from RGB to CMYK, photoshop or iPhoto itself. I'm guessing maybe the autofix feature in iPhoto? (I don't have Aperture)
Secondly, which monitor color setting should I set the screen at? I'm guessing it's either Apple RGB or Colour LCD, maybe even ColorMatch RGB?
Any any other tips that people can give in achieving the most realistic results to what you have on the screen when your printed iPhoto book gets sent back. I don't want the mid tones to disappear or become too bright because the gamma and color settings were different to what they use at the other end.
    Many thanks.

    Hi,
The situation has changed a little, our original photos are in RAW format and some of them are slightly over saturated in the higher tones.
I've read on other threads that it is a good idea to run the 'Enhance' tool on all photos before sending the iPhoto Book away.
Since iPhoto's 'Enhance' tools seems to do a lot of helpful things like sharpen, adjust the levels, etc it also seems to notch the contrast up and this would prove destructive for the lighter and darker tones not captured by the camera's dynamic range.
So as I've been advised it's best to use Apple's own tools before sending the iPhoto Book away, so I'm going to download the trial of Aperture.
Does anyone have any more recommendations on which monitor colour profile setting to use etc. I've also read that iPhoto prints best from JPEGS so the RAW will obviously need changed. Will Aperture automatically save to Profile name: Camera RGB Profile after I've done some editing there?
What would be the best way to prepare RAW images in aperture where some of them might need an Image Overlay in Photomatix then imported back to Aperture for printing an Apple/iPhoto style Book?
    Many thanks

  • Best way to merge photos from different macs

What is the best way to merge photo libraries from different macs onto one mac?

The only way to merge Libraries - versions, metadata etc - is with the paid ($20) version of iPhoto Library Manager
Other than that you will need to export from one Library to the Finder and then import to the other. This won’t get all the Metadata (for instance, Faces) and won't get the Versions either.

  • What are the best ways to share photos from iPhoto?

What are the best ways to share photos from iPhoto?

If you use Adobe Photoshop, or even Adobe Photoshop Elements, stay as far away from iPhoto as possible.
iPhoto does not play nice with Adobe software or with software from any other third party developer.
iPhoto will hide your image files in a library paradigm where you have no access to them other than through iPhoto.

  • Best way to manage photos?

So I don't manage photo's on my iphone very much. I dont' need to, but my parents (not very technical) do take a lot of photo's with their phones. On occassion, there is a need to make more room on the iphone, so I'm starting to teach them that the photo's should be sent to the (windows) pc, but they don't want all of the pics to be removed from the iphone.
Currently I'm not sitting in fromt of a pc with iTunes on it, but is it possible to do this in iTunes? Or is a good reason to use the Photo Stream feature on iCloud?.Or can I sync just certain albums (without Photo Stream / iCloud) , if I show them how to move pictures to other albums?
I'm looking for the best / easist way for them to manage their photo's, without having much user interaction. At most, maybe plug it in and that's it.
    Suggestions would be welcome.
    Thanks

How about an Express Card/34 Flash Card Reader that should be faster than an old USB one.
Aperture looks good for Photo Management.

  • What is the best way to manage photo's with multiple login accounts?

There are three people in my household and each has their own login into the computer. I also have and external drive.  Space is becoming short on the computer, so I want to move all my photos and music to the external drive.  I have moved all the music files and folders to the external drive and then each user has just updated their individual iTunes folders, pointing to the external drive.
However, what is the best way to manage photo's? Do I do this same process or is there another way? I don't want any music or photo files on the computer's hard drive at all if it can be avoided.

  • What is the best way to migrate photo library to new Mac ?

Hi .... I just bought off ebay an Mac Mini 2.53Mhz running Mountain Lion . This was a great and cost effective purchase to upgrade my very tired Mac Mini 1.6 duo running Snow Leopard (still going as a second computer) .
However , I am not sure best way to transfer over my photos ?
I have a Time Capsule and I can use migration assistant
    - but when doing this and choosing just photos nothing else , the process creates a new user and is a real mess on the desktop.  Thus I am left with two users on the computer : and I can't access the photos from the 2.53 Mac mini user that I created for the computer , I have to log in to this restored profile.  Annoying !
    - I believe migration assistant linking the two macs through an ethernet cabe will give the same results
I have now purchased a firewire cable 400 to 800 , so the two macs are now linked . Would this be a cleaner way to transfer photos ? How should I set about it. I don't want to drag over any mess from the old computer ... I just want to get the photos onto the new computer and then link that to time capsule.
    Thanks

    Hey there cosmiconion,
It sounds like you are needing to copy over a folder containing images from your Snow Leopard computer to your newer Mountain Lion machine. You can do this by enabling File Sharing for that folder or directory, then accessing that from Finder on your newer computer, and this article will help you do that:
