Best SBC for cheap single drive network backup? ESATA or Micro B? Rasp. Pi, etc.

Well, maybe, but maybe not, that is what I am here to find out. There are a few I came across, such as : http://store.linksprite.com/pcduino3-nano/
http://www.bananapi.org/ (this one might actually do what I need. It looks like it has the sata, with a smalll jumper that can have a sata molex power plug in to it.)
I just wanted to see if anyone knew of any others out there.

Hello all, I am trying to find the cheapest solution to create a networkable backup system for my house using some sort of SBC. I have a raspberry pi and was going to try and run OSMC (open source media server). In theory it would be great. I can connect a USB HD to my rasp pi, and have it on a wireless network, and just backup directly to it. I had 2 issues, any wireless device I tried (3 different ones) didnt work right, and it didnt have enough power to run my WD my passpost 2.5in 2tb drive. Does anyone know of any SBC's that can support either ESATA, USB 3 micro B connections, and good working wireless for cheap? I see there are a few out there that are over $100 alone, but then you have to buy a drive as well. I am wanting to find the best solution I can for the cheapest price, mostly as a project, because I was upset my pi could...

  • Best size for SSD boot drive?

    Hi,
I am looking to replace my optical drive from my iMac 27" with an SSD to be used as a boot drive and to hold my applications for faster loading etc..
I was wandering what would be the best size for a boot drive so that I dont overspend as SSD's are expenive.
Thanks for any help in advance.

The best size is the size you need to store OS X and your apps without getting the SSD full. For example, if OS X and your apps take less than 100 GB, you should consider a 128 GB SSD, and if they take 150 GB, go for a 256 GB SSD.
You can buy the SSD at OWC to guarantee the compatibility > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/

  • AFP error for new hard drive for time machine The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features.

Purchased Seagate network drive, ethernet attached to wireless router, set up went well but attempts at backup with Time Machine failed. "Do I need to erase disk and reformat or is this error message "The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features" indicating some other error?

That means the NAS drive's OS isn't compatible with the version of OSX you're running.   See if the maker has an update.

  • Best setup for external hard drive and iMac?

Just purchased a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1TB external HD for my Mac OSX 10.5.8. Would like to use it to backup all my pics/writing (I am a writer/photog), videos, and music - about 400 gigs worth at present. As an analog person, I am confused as to how best I should format the drive:
option 1 being to use drive with Time Machine (just now heard of it),
option 2 to use drive for storage and backup (what's the diff) using Memeo software,
option 3 to use for storage by reformatting with Disc Utilities.
This, no doubt, is easy language for most of you, but Japanese to me, a Nuyorican.
Again, I mainly would like to have backups for what's on my iMac, in case that dreaded day comes and it goes kaput. What would be the best option for me to simply transfer everything, unplug it and put it in a safe place? And if and when I do that, could I, two years, months, weeks later, plug it back in and add what pics or whatever I've accrued to it and replace it in that safe place once again? Looking for what is most practical for the safe keeping of my precious files.
Hope my old tactile-inclined *** is making sense.
Appreciate any and all assistance here. Thanks in advance.

I have to agree with JG, I'd strongly recommend using Time Machine as your primary backup. BTW there is a forum specifically for TM that has a FAQ section and if you need it (most never do) a troubleshooting section. You can find that forum at:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1227
Many people like myself believe in redundant backups, in other words 2 is better than one. If you decide to go that route you will need a second external HD and then use software like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. What these applications do is create bootable clones, so if your iMac's internal HD dies you have a bootable clone that you can use to run your machine until the internal HD is replaced. Dual backups are also good if one backup's HD dies.
Below are links to 3 articles I found in MacWorld magazine, what they are is backup strategies of 3 individuals to give you some ideas so you can figure out what is best for your needs.
Operating any computer without a backup plan is a recipe for disaster. Many people put their digital life on their computer (photographs, music, movies etc..) without a backup and then cry and moan when their computer dies. These days there is no reason one shouldn't be backing up their computer.

  • Best practice for configuring virtual drive on UCS

    Hi,
I have two C210 M2 Server with LSI 6G MegaRAID 9261-8i Card with 10 hard drives of each 135GB. When I tried the automatic selection for the RAID configuration, the system has created one virtual drive with RAID 6. My concern is what the best practice to configure virtual drive? Is it RAID 1 and RAID5 or all in one drive with RAID6? Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks.

Since you are planning to have UC apps on the server, Voice applications have specified their recommendations here.
    http://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/Tested_Reference_Configurations_%28TRC%29
I believe your C210 server specs could be matching TRC #1,  where you need to have
RAID 1  - First two HDDs for VMware
RAID 5  - Remaining 8 HDDs as datastore for virtual machines ( CUCM and CUC )

  • Not in JDeveloper: Lifecycle PhaseListener best practice for a single page?

    ADF Faces 10.1.3.2
    * Not using JDeveloper *
    Two questions:
I need to add logic to the lifecycle for one page and not all of the pages in the application.
1.) What is the best practice to write a Lifecycle PhaseListener for a single page?
I understand that I need to extend the PageController class and override the methods I want to change, then use the new page controller in your pages.
    I'm referencing:
    http://www.oracle.com/webapps/online-help/jdeveloper/10.1.3?topic=adf_plifecyclehandlejsf_html
2.) Since I'm not using JDeveloper, how to I use the PageController class?
    Thanks,

    Frank: Please let me clairfy.
I am using ADF Faces, just not using the JDeveloper IDE to develop the application.
    I am using Netbeans 5.5.1.
So going back to my question, after extending the PageController, how to I make that class a part of my application in Java code, faces-config.xml or adf-faces-config.xml?
    Thanks,

  • Best option for switching hard drives?

As said in previous posts, I'm going to be getting a new MBP soon. I've got a Time Machine backup of my current hard drive, but what would work better for the new MBP?
Doing a full restore of the old hard drive to the new, or keep the new hard drive 'as is' and just bring back the items that I need from the old drive's backup?
    Thanks
    Chris

    Hi, e3gle
I strongly suggest to keep the new HDD as is (new) and then start dragging or adding data form your time-machine backup. Do not forget to install all necessary updates before transferring any data over to the new HDD.
Another tip, see that you know EXACTLY what data you are transferring, because there might be some malicious data. NOT THAT MAC GET INFECTED OFTEN but just to be safe.

  • Time Machine for Partitioned iMac Drive - Wireless Backup w/o TIme Capsule

Hi all, does anyone think it is possible to set up a Time Capsule type backup on a large iMac hard drive. my household has one iMac and two mac books. I would like to partition a portion of my 1TB imac drive and wirelessly back up the mac books on this drive via time machine just like it would for Time Capsule. The home network is fully functional so it seems like this should be possible since I can already move files around on the macs. I guess I could just get a time capsule but this seemed possible and way cheaper. anyone have any ideas?

That should work. See #22 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • Best setup for a small iMac network with NAS?

    Hello all,
Any recommendations on how to setup a small network with 3 machines and mutiple users?
We run a design studio and currently have 3 x 27" iMacs with a couple of laptops that come and go, that all connect to a Synology DS213 NAS drive. (All the iMacs are connected to the NAS via ethernet through a gigabit switch, so we have a reliable connection)
All 3 machines have just had their HD's replaced (all backup up to the NAS) and are currently blank canvases - so I'm keen to get a decent network system up and running that works well in conjunction with the NAS drive. They're all running 10.6.8, but I'm happy to put them on Mountain Lion and install OSX server. It seems most feedback isn't great, but I'm interested to hear any ideas,
    Thanks in advance..

Rick may be right because although i didnt think of it before i tend to have notoriuosly long classnames for my php classes and i have used samba on occasion (when rsync is out of the question for one reason or another) and never had a problem. I use kubuntu (feisty at the moment )with an ext3 filesystem. if i have a chance this evening ill give it a try and see what happens.
You could also possibly use FUSE to use an ssh filesystem for the shares... i don tknow how that would figure in your back up though.
Also if worse comes to worse you could tar or dmg the the necessary files... just some thoughts.
Ill be interested to know what you end up implementing....
OH one last thought... Compile Darwin from source and use that as your server

  • Best Setup for Lion Server Time Machine Backup with Drobo?

I've been thinking about this a lot, yet I don't feel I have a good solution for this, so I'm going to throw it out to the community.
I have a home server setup using a Mac Mini running Lion Server 10.7.2 with a Firewire 800 Drobo attached.  The Drobo is used for both Time Machine backups and files.  I also have a Powerbook G4 running Leopard and a MacBook 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with Lion 10.7.2 which connect to the Server and the Drobo wirelessly thorugh an Airport Extreme.
I want to use Time Machine to have all of my computers back up to the server & Drobo, but realize there are several ways to go, each with their pluses and minuses:
    Server Time Machine Backup:
+ Centralizes backup process, rules, and other elements
+ Currently Mac Mini is backing up to the Drobo correctly using this process
+ Have setup size limit on Server backup so that it does not eat up file space
    - Would combine laptop backups with server backup into one sparse image: this would lead to the computer with the largest backup needs taking up too much space
    Client-Driven Time Machine Backup:
+ Allows for customization of backup processes by computer
+ Can setup specific space requirements for each computer
+ Backups are separate from each other
    - Wireless backup from laptops to Drobo is not functioning currently
Any thoughts or experiences on how best to set this up?  I tend to do most of my work on the MacBook, hence I am concerned about it having it's backup space eaten up by the server, but that may be more of a theoretical issue than a real one.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Well I'm not sure if I am following you but I will explain how I set mine up. When I got the Drobo I inserted 2 drives and selected the highest available volume I could (16TB). My drives are 4 TB each and I knew I would soon add 2 more. Then Drobo did its thing and prepared these drives. The Drobo shows up on my mini desktop as an external drive. When I log into my server from my other computer I can see the mini server volume and the Drobo volume. I can access each no problem. They act as regular volumes. Soon after I added the second two drives and everything stayed the same meaning I could still see and access the Drobo on the desktop of my mini. So it sounds like you used the Drobo dashboard to partition yours for two volumes? Are they both showing on the desktop?
"Maybe the Drobo needs to be mounted on the desktop to be considered AFP feature enabled." I could be wrong and hopefully someone will correct me but I think the Drobo (or volumes) have to be mounted on the desktop to work with AFP.

  • Best strategy for using external drive to speed up painfully slow mac mini

I have Intel core duo, and LaCie external drive. Many programmes are almost unusably slow. Like Adobe Photoshop, Garageband, Logic Express, SecondLife etc... (would have been nice if apple had told me the 'improved spec' would mean so many programmes would no longer work!)
I am looking for the best way to utilise the external drive. I have now set up to boot from the LaCie, but it is no better. Id like to know whats best to do with the two drives. Would one be best kept as clear as possible? And should that be the bootup drive? Originally, the idea was to increase storage and backup. Now it is anything at all, that will make this computer faster. My old G4 PowerMac is actually faster and more reliable!
    powerMac G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)
    powerMac G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)
    powerMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)
    powerMac G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)
    powerMac G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)
    powerMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

There is no way to improve on the graphics card in your mini - it's built into the logic board and can't be bypassed. However, while that may be a disappointment, it has to be said that by and large the graphics system in the mini is actually very capable, and is probably not the cause of the problem.
What IS the primary issue I suspect is the 512Mb RAM, which on a Core Solo running applications such as Photoshop is so woefully inadequate that it would be a surprise if your old G4 wasn't somewhat faster!
The problem is that Photoshop (the version you have) is not Intel-native, so while it runs, it requires Rosetta. Thus you have a RAM-hungry operating system, a RAM hungry application and a RAM-hungry translation package, all running at the same time. To add to that, since the software is not Intel-native, it has to be translated on-the-fly so considerable CPU time is needed to devote to that process in addition to all the other things the system needs to do in order to run.
Thus your external drive would not help much when used as a boot drive because even though it is likely to be somewhat faster than the internal, the limited RAM of the system will be forcing so many 'paging' actions (writing and reading memory blocks to the hard drive) that any speed gains will be rather heavily masked.
Most of the performance problems you experience can be resolved by upgrading RAM to 2Gb, simply because that will allow MacOS, Rosetta and your software a lot more room to breathe and significantly reduce the paging activity of the system such that then booting from the external will show notable improvements in responsiveness.
Alternatively, you may find that there are Intel-native alternatives to your software which may be available at reasonable cost and provide the features you need. Good examples are such things as GraphicConverter, which is shareware and does much of what Photoshop can do, and NeoOffice, which is open source and free, which is a good alternative to MS Office. These would run without Rosetta and provide you with much improved performance as a consequence.

  • Finder Locks Up When Using AEBS Attached Drives & Network Backup

This might be more of a general discussion as well as specific to my situation:
I have a new Airport Extreme Base Station with two drives attached via USB powered hub. #1 is an OWC 1TB drive and #2 is a Seagate Momentus 500GB drive. Both are HFS+, and I have never had any issues when attached locally.
I am attempting to back up using CCC and/or SuperDuper to the Seagate with a sparse bundle. Both programs hang up when trying to locate the drive. I am able to Force Quit once, but if I run the programs again the Finder locks up and I can't recover it even using Terminal.
I'm not sure what the problem might be. The network mounted drives are always visible; these lock ups seem to only occur when trying to backup. I've read Finder can be tempermental with networking.
I suppose, for troubleshooting, I should attach one drive directly and go from there?

  • What are best practices for back up drives when they become full?

I've got an external hard drive that is now full. What do I do? Delete the oldest files on it, right? If so, do I delete the full backup and ALL the incremental backups since then? Do I have to do this manually now; isn't there a way to automate this?

The "usual" procedure is to move the oldest incremental backups from the hard drive to permanent storage media such as DVD.
However, if your backup drive is the same size as your main drive, then you could do incremental backups that delete files on the backup druve that have been deleted from the source drive. This prevents the drive from filling up with old and out of date files. However, if you need to maintain archives of even the incremental backups, then move the oldest to permanent storage media and delete them from the backup drive to free space.

  • 4400 Controllers - Best Practise for connecting to wired network

At one time the best practise recommendation for wireless was to treat the traffic as untrusted and separate it from the wired network by firewalls and intrusion detection. A lot of the reason for this was the weakness of WEP. Now with strong authentication and encryption (e.g., WPA2 and EAP-TLS) in use, and the use of wireless controllers, I'm wondering what the industry is recommending (and doing in case the actions aren't the same as the recommendations).
Are organizations connecting the wireless controllers directly to the internal network or are they separating them with a firewall and IDS infrastructure? If the latter, what does the architecture look like? Are there documents on the Cisco site or on the Internet that show how the controllers could be firewalled? Everthing I've seen shows connections directly to the internal network. Is firewalling the controller an overreaction to the historical paranoia from the WEP days?

The argument would be that regardless of what security you put on the wireless, you still don't have the physical security - i.e. someone doesn't need to walk into your building to use your network.
Beyond that if you're using strong auth/enc you can currently be considered safe, we have customers using that direct into their LANs (but then, we also have customers with WEP direct into their LANs!)...
If you are concerned or really need belt 'n' braces security, then go down the firewall/IDS route - there's no harm in it if you have the money. It really depends how much functionality and ease of use you need to balance against it.
