Best scanner for slides of music scores

Hi, I'm looking for some suggestions for a scanner that would provide the best possible reproductions of about 1,200 slides of music scores. These black and white scores/parts were photographed about 25 years ago and would need to be printed to approximately 11x17 paper. I would prefer to spend around $1,000 but could go higher. It sounds like sometimes it's better to go with software other than what is bundled with the scanner and I would be open to that option as well. Even though these slides would be printed black and white I would still prefer to get a color scanner so that it can be used for other things when I'm done with this project. Also, is scanning to pdf the best file type for this project? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

While I haven't done that, it seems like you can do this with one of the Epson flatbeds in the $500 range that has a slide adapter. If you wanted an automatic slide feeder, then you may want a Nikon slide scanner for around $1000+ and the auto feeder will cost $500 more. Either will get you enough resolution for 11x17.
If you want to use software other than that included, VueScan is what I use, and may be suitable for such a project. SilverFast is another third-party driver, but it's more restricted to photographs. While I use VueScan for photographs, its workflow also supports document scanning.
PDF is fine to save to, though it's really a container format. If you scan to PDF, you are really scanning to TIFF or JPEG format stored inside a PDF file, for convenience and storage as a multiple-page document.

  • Best scanner for $100 still Epson Perfection 3490?

    Hi,
I asked awhile back about the best scanner for around $100. I was told the Epson Perfection 3490. Is that still the best choice for the money?
Also, where would you recommend buying it? I would rather not deal with internet sales in case I get one with a problem right out of the box.
    Thank you

Forestman, you should pass on the 3490 and look at the new V100 if you prefer Epson.

Personally, I like the Canon CanoScan 4400F in this price range. It is also worth a look.

  • What's Best Approach for Multitrack Classical Music?

Can someone suggest the best approach for recording classical musicians onto
four tracks? In this scenario, they play until they make a mistake on, say,
measure 24, stop, then (take 2) go back to measure 20 and play until the next
rough spot, and so on. Ultimately there may be 15 takes that all need to be
    trimmed and stitched together.
In the old (tape) days, this was pretty basic editing. I would use a blade and block
to cut out all the bad stuff on the multitrack tape, then I could mix. But how do I
do this in Audition? (I use version 1.5.)
I can't do the cuts it in edit view because the tracks would get out of sync
Assuming all the takes are in one session, in multitrack view, this most basic of
functions seems to elude me. What am I missing?

I could be wrong about this in the classical music environment,
where things are not close-mic'ed but if I am, I am confident Steve
    will correct me.  Ha.
You always run the risk of small changes between takes - and that's where Audition 3 and the new improved crossfades score rather heavily. You won't notice 1dB on a single instrument across a fade though - it's hard to spot this as a jump, even, unless it's on pure tone. No, I very rarely close-mic stuff at all, although I did with a clavichord recently - it's seriously too quiet to mic any other way.

when recording classical music, any engineer worth anything has the mix down pat as it's being recorded.
That's the way they used to work, certainly - but not nowadays, especially if it's done on location, which most classical recording is. What's more likely to happen is that you'd use decent mic preamps feeding straight into a multitrack, or even some software on a laptop. I generally record like that - but I also feed the multitrack outputs to a Yamaha mixer via ADAT, do a mix on that and record it back to a spare multitrack pair. I don't actually need to do that - but having a mix available from the multitrack that's pretty much there is good as far as being able to play back takes to conductors is concerned.
Of course, one of the other reasons that classical sessions recorded on location aren't mixed on the spot is that the monitoring conditions are invariably far from ideal, and I'd have it that no engineer worth anything would ever risk a final mix done on location.
But I only get paid to do all of this on a regular basis, so what would I know? Must be something though - my customers come back for more...

  • Imdoubt that I'm in the correct forum, so could amyone direct me to where I could get helpinusing acanon scanner for slides?

I doubt that I'm in the correct forum, so could amyone direct me to where I could get help in using a canon scanner 9000F for slides?

I believe that I must have a scanner driver because I have now successfully made one scan.  But, I don't know where to search for a driver on my mac so that I could verify that I have the driver.  But, I have a question - is there a user group for the 9000F?  I'm wondering if there's such a group where I could look for info regarding new user questions/answers.
Since I now have 4 slides scanned, I'm wondering what I can do with them.  I believe that they're in My Image Garden, but I don't know where.  I saw somewhere that you can put them into a folder of your choice, so I created a folder called "Thirty-Five MM Folder".  In a quick search, I didn't see where I could designate that folder for my scanned images. That (minor) dilemma is typical of the information I'd hope to find in the user group - perhaps in FAQ's.

  • Best scanner for lotsa 35mm negs on MAC

I've seen the Epson v700 mentioned as a good scanner, not toooo ridiculously high priced.
But I've read that it uses Silverfast software which is a nightmare for mac users (I know this from experience).
Will photoshopCS4 work with this scanner?
Can anybody recommend any other scanner under a thousand dollars?

You will get epson scan with it wont you?, the silverfast software is an extra. The Epson stuff is very good, even the cheaper models. We've also got an old epson perfection connected to our minilab, its been used six days a week for the last five or so years and its still going strong. Digital ice will take out the dust and scratches for you (but not on kodachrome or proper black and white film) . Weve also got a microtek 1800f which I went for because it has a glassless system for holding the film (to avoid Newton rings) but I find the epson doesnt suffer from this anyway even when laying a neg straight onto the glass. We had a Nikon film scanner for a while, it gave lovely results with the multi sampling turned up but was very slow. The other option is to find someone with a Noritsu minilab, ours gives very good results and it will be alot less tedious for you.

  • Best scanner for around $100

    Hi,
Is there a good scanner for around $100?
    Thank you

Hi, Forestman. Epson's Perfection 3490 lists for $100 at Epson's own online store, can be had for a few dollars less from some other vendors (and, strangely, for considerably more than list from others), and has been very favorably reviewed.
Few publications or web sites do side-by-side comparison testing of really inexpensive scanners (under $100), probably because few buyers of really inexpensive scanners are critical enough to understand or care about the details. My own experience with other inexpensive Epson models has been uniformly excellent, but I haven't used a 3490 myself.
Epson's TWAIN scanning software is easy to understand and use, though of course it's less powerful than stand-alone professional-level scanning applications that I've used. I'm not familiar with the other software that comes bundled with the 3490. Epson really understands the Mac, unlike some other scanner makers (particularly HP, which is clueless) and can offer meaningful tech support.

  • Best mic for recording live music with video ipod?

i believe there are mics for recording sound, and believe there are even some which are made for great sound quality such as live music.
if so, which one is the best?
    thanks.

This is sort of like asking what is the best motorized vehicle.
There are different mikes for different purposes, instruments, etc. I'd get on Google and look for recording websites.
Myself, I like various Neumann's for certain applications.

  • Best scanner for OSX 10.5.8 Leopard?

My last scanner only scanned one page at a time. It also sent huge files. I want a scanner that can handle 10-15 pages. When i checked Fujitsu, most of their scanners are not compatible with Mac's ( a friend recommended Fujitsu). I don't want all-in-one printer-scanner-fax.  Just a scanner. Any ideas?

Do you want auto feed for those 15 or so pages or just be able to scan 15 pages in to one PDF document?  If it's the latter then try VueScan.  It has the capability of doing multipage scans and then automatically combine the pages into one PDF file.
There's a demo version that you can try. Check this list of supported scanners to see if yours is supported. My wife uses it just for the purpose you mentioned with our older Canon scanner.  It would be less expensive than getting a new scanner.  This webpage shows the feature differences between the Standard and Pro versions: https://www.hamrick.com/reg.html

  • Best Settings For Converting Audio Music CD's To MP3 Format

I have a huge collection (between my dad and I) of music CD's that I want to add to iTunes and put on several iPods (my 80 GB Classic, his 16 GB Nano and my mom's 8 GB Nano). What are the best settings to accomplish this and have it sound the best when loaded onto the iPods?

Depending on how good your headphones are and how good your hearing is different settings will yield acceptable results. The old, years ago, MP3 setting was always 128k. This is generally a decent compromise between file size and audio quality.
If all devices are iPods the you can get slightly better audio with same size files by using AAC format set to 160k.

  • What is the best Macbook for me? (Music producer)

    Hello.
I'm looking for the perfect Macbook for which I can use for recording vocals and producing instrumental beats. It is highly important that the music software, which I use, will run smoothly and quickly.
Thanks a lot and I hope you can help!

This is not the place, it is the Pages forum.
Go to an Apple Store and try what is available, it is not a big range. Any model would do the job, all you need is good external storage.

  • Best Practice for Keeping Imported Music Organized? - Help Please

I download tunes and am looking at the best way to keep iTunes up to date with new downloads (as opposed o CD rips). Am i best to have all files in one overall folder and then just use iTunes to import the files from whatever folder they reside in (after the download) to the copy in iTunes and delete the original? To date Ive been keeping them scattered across drives and just using iTunes as the pointer to the original but now losing track as to what has been imported and what hasnt. Perhaps the above is a better way and if so....best to delete iTunes, reinstall with an empty database, import all and then delete from original flile locations? Help and thanks in advance!!
    Porsche216

I import similar to the way you described. Import then delete original. I keep a folder just for importing. iTunes has a function consolidating the library. It will copy from the multiple locations to the iTunes library location. You would then have to delete the originals to free up space.

  • Best codec for slide show?

I'm making some slide shows in Motion 3 w/ the CoreMelt Image Flow plugins. The slide show also has a moving background and sporadic live type fonts. These slide shows will be presented on a 46" HDTV. What is the best codec to use to maintain quality, but not waste space and minimize rendering time. FWIW The original pictures are TIFFs.

In the olden days, we'd print to tape and play the tape. End of story. But if you want to use DVDSP, you've got lots of work ahead. Your delivery will be MPEG2 which is awful and requires careful tweaking of all compression settings. MPEG2 is not pretty on big sets.
Lots of patience and research and experimentation, there is no magic formula, although there is a wealth of information on the Net and locally available in your DVDSP manual.
If you don't have time to work through the weirdly interrelated variables, just use the defaults all the way down the line, lower your expectations.

  • Which is better HP or Epson scanner for iMac 27"?

HP or Epson best scanner for iMac 27"?

    Put it this way:
I have a 6 year old Epson scanner that has sucessfully scanned 16,000+ photos, plus umpteen documents.
If for some reason I was faced with having to buy another scanner, Epson would be first place I would look. Canon would be second (love their printers), HP would be last.
Please don't ask me why, this is a purely subjective gut-feeling opinion!

How can I use pdf pack to convert cubase documents  (music scores)  into pdfs? I am looking for the former possibility to install acrobat like a printer but i don't have this option with "pdf pack". Can you help?

    Hi mariab,
What format are those music scores (I'm not familiar with cubase documents). But, it may be that Adobe PDF Pack doesn't support that format. In that case, Acrobat is the way to go. You can then print your files to PDF as you'd like. You're welcome to try Acrobat for free for 30 days to see whether it's going to work for you. If you decide it is, and you'd like to use it going forward, you could convert your PDF Pack subscription into an Acrobat subscription.
    Best,
