Best setting for Canon VIXIA HF R21 for YouTube

I am looking for the best or most optimal setting for shooting video with my Canon VIXIA HF R21 camera.
I am using a MacBook Pro laptop and Adobe Premiere Elements 10.
My goal is to produce the best quality videos for a "YouTube" channel. The videos will be for a teenage car show shot outdoors and narrated.
The current DEFAULT settings are:
Recording Mode = SP, 1440x1080
Bitrate = 7Mbps
Codec = MPEG4-AVC/H.264
Frame Rate = 60i
Digital Image stabilization = standard
Here are possible "alternative selections" - please let me know if any of these settings are better than the Default settings for YouTube.
Change Recording Mode to
1. MXP = 1920x1080 @ 24Mbps
2. FXP = 1920x1080 @ 17Mbps
3. XP+ = 1440x1080 @ 12 Mbps
Change Frame Rate to
1. PF30
Digital image stabilization
1. Dynamic
2. Standard
3. Off
I will use Adobe Premiere Elemebnts 10 to upload the final edited video - what setting are the best upload compression settings if I want to upload for the ebst quality?

BillFlorida, I'm not sure what you're not getting here. Have you tried any of the things we've suggested?
There are two settings you need to worry about. One is your PROJECT setting. That must match your original footage, as I've indicated. If it doesn't, you're going to get poor performance and video quality.
The second setting is your OUTPUT setting. That's the only setting YouTube is interested in. If you use the output settings I linked you to above -- working from a project that's been set up properly -- you will get excellent YouTube results.
Try it. You'll see.
You'll also see, if you experiment a bit, that there's virtually no difference in the quality of FXP and MXP -- especially if you're going to display your video online. The important thing is that your PROJECT settings match that 1920x1080 AVCHD footage and that you use the YouTube output settings recommended in the FAQs.
Try it. You will see.

The highest quality is MP4 60P 35 Mbps. Generally speaking, the higher the bit rate, the better the quality.

Canon Vixia HF R21 camcorder question

Problem: Just bought a Canon Vixia HF R21 HD camcorder. Just shot a football game with it using the highest quality setting called MXP. This is 1080x1920 at 24Mbps and a frame rate of 60i. Output is 1080i. The video looks awesome on the camcorder screen.
In PE9 it looks jittery AND WAVY. Almost like looking trough heat waves.
Questions:
1. I did not set the camera to sports mode. Should I have?
2. Besides 60i, there are PF30 and PF24 frame rates. Would either get rid of the jitters?
3. Is the jitters I'm seeing because I don't have a Hi-def monitor or TV or Blu-ray player?
4. Don't know about 1080i vs 1080p.
5. All I know is I want what's on the camera to be on DVDs or Blu-ray DVDs.

Which operating system are you using?
Have you tried Help>Updates from within photoshop cs6 to get either camera raw 8.3 or 8.7.1, which should enable photoshop cs6 to open the canon 5D Mark III files.
(version of camera raw depends on your operating system)
If that doesn't work try one of the following camera raw plugin installers:

How do you Backup Canon VIXIA HF10 files for FCP?

I just bought a Canon VIXIA HF10, wonderful!!
I'm trying to import the captured/recorded files into FCP..i found that's a problem..
When i drag and drop all the files and folder on my desktop and when i deleted 1 of the file in the backup folder...Final Cut Pro unable to browse the whole folder for preview and even doesn't launch in the Log and Transfer window
How to solve this problem? how to delete the clips that i don't want and keep posible to launch in FCP? Deleted it on Camera before backup to computer? not really a good idea...

I have HF100. Do you mean make a backup of footage you take before editing? Or after editing? For footage before editing, I make an exact copy of the SDHC card from my camera and store that on an external harddrive. That is in the avchd codec (with file and directory structures intact). Therefore 8GB card = 8GB on Hard Drive. With the HF10 I believe it is possible to copy the files on Camera's Hard Drive to Camera's SDHC. Then you could follow my workflow. You will also find that you can point Log and Transfer to the stored copy on the drive and it will transcode to ProRes or AIC as you determine. The important thing to remember is to maintain the exact file and directory structure as the original.

Bad news:
I'm pretty sure this Canon shoots AVCHD video for which you need both FCE4 and an Intel Mac to edit. (Your G4 was the next-to-last of the Motorola processors before Apple switched to Intel chips.)

Canon Vixia HG20 okay for Final Cut editing?

Anybody know if it's a problem to take footage off a Canon Vixia HG20 and start editing in Final Cut? I normally import my minidv footage through firewire on another camera but was interested in this particular camera. Not sure how it'll change my workflow so I figured I'd check with the pros!

That's an AVCHD camera so you need an Intel Mac and Final Cut Pro 6.0.5. You would then use FCP's Log & Transfer function to transcode to Pro Res or Apple Intermediate Codec.
To use this format on a G5, you would have to get a copy of Voltaic.
Transcoding would take around 20 hours for each hour of video.

External Microphone Recommendations For Canon Vixia HF M50

Hello:
I have reviewed the microphone options for the mini-advanced shoe, and they don't work for my application. I need an external condenser microphone that can be on a wire 50 feet away from the camera. I tried a dynamic microphone but voices were much too soft.
Does anyone have a recommendation on what will work on a 50 foot wire, but provide good sound from an external microphone?

Does a Canon Vixia HF R21 HD Flash Memory Camcorder work with iMovie??!!

I checked Apple's list of compatible camcorders with iMovie and this camcorder is not on the list.... But this camcorder seems so similar to other camcorders that I want to know if it works with iMovie on my Mac even though its not on the list?!?
I need to know SOON because I need to start filming tomorrow and this camera is available at my local Best Buy now....

If by 'formats' you mean 'drivers' then....maybe. Here is a simplified description:
Mac tries to bundle all the drivers it needs with the install, and so there are typically no drivers available as they come with the OS. For video cameras they don't supply Mac 'drivers' but instead rely on iMovie since all new macs come with iMovie. Apple bundles the drivers with OS X, and in essence that means your camera either works with iMovie or it doesn't. So you have to check the list from Apple.
You would think that you could hook up the camera and copy off the HD video files and then play them in Quicktime. But Quicktime doesn't play many AVCHD formats from the various camera companies (e.g. videos from a Sony camera). (I've found that the free VideoLAN Player does, though). So what most folks do is to use iMovie to import the camera's videos, then use iMovie save as a movie of some kind, encoding into some quicktime friendly format.
On PC the cameras are bundled with some kind of movie editing program that can use the camera's drivers. Hope that helps. Others chime in and correct me

My macbook won't reconize my canon vixia hf r20 when I plug it in, usb

So the other day I got a Canon Vixia HF R20 for Christmas. I took some video and I hooked it up to my macbook, by usb cable that came with the camera, and my mac won't reconize it. It worked on my brother's pc. I turned it on and nothing. The thing is though that it picks up the sd card when I plug it in on imovie. But i use final cut express, so you may know I just want it to reconize it and let me go straight into final cut express. thANKs

You might want to try using another charger in case the charger is faulty. If that doesn't help, take the MacBook Pro and charger to an Apple store genius bar and have the technicians test the system to see where the fault is.

Canon VIxia hf20 help!!!!!

Hello, I recently purchased the Canon Vixia hf20. For some reason when i put the camera into playback mode/connection mode the computer will recognize the device but the software which came with the camera will not discover the movie loaded onto it. I am using a mac and the software is compatible with mac. I have plugged the camera into the power source as well as connected it to my macbook via USB. I have tried connecting it to imovie 09 as well as ustream but that didn't work either. The drivers are up to date but for some reason it just wont work. Bad news -- it looks like the Vixia hf20 is NOT compatible in video mode with Mac. From the Canon web support site:
Issue: What is the Mac compatibility of my camcorder?
Solution: The digital video solutions disk is compatible with Mac OS 10.4 and up for stills only. No video related software is provided.
The video connectivity of the Canon DVD and Hard Disc Drive camcorders provided by the software bundled with them is designed for use with Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Microsoft Windows Vista only. The Sonic Roxio My DVD software included with some models is only compatible with the Windows XP SP2 operating system when combined with a computer supporting the USB 2.0 specification.
Macintosh OS10.4.3 and up users may be able to view the contents of a finalized disk or files recorded onto the hard drive (for hard disc drive models) on the computer when it is connected to a USB port on the computer. With a finalized disk loaded into the camcorder the camera should show up on the desktop as a mounted drive and files may be copied (dragged) from the disk using normal procedures. Any desired editing, playback or other features may require additional third party software.
Note: Proper operation is not guaranteed.

Canon Vixia HF200 Best recording format for watching on Apple TV

I just bought a Canon Vixia HF200 and I am trying to figure what is the best format to record in. The options for frame rate are 60i , pf30, pf24 .
Now I know Apple TV will accept 1280 x 780 at 24fps or 960 x 540 at 30fps.
I have already tested the 960 x 540 at 30fps using voltaic to convert the video.
But I have been unsuccessful getting the 1280 x 720 res video to transfer to apple tv.
I am wondering if pf24 is going to give me video that is 24 fps and what drawbacks there are to this format, or any tips.

I must apologise, I hadn't updated Voltaic in a while, I wasn't aware it converts to other formats, my older version doesn't, it only converts to AIC (which would have the extension .mov)
Can I ask why you want to create a movie at 1280 x 720 @ 24 fps rather than one at 960 x 540 @ 30 fps. If you like 24 fps video, that's fair enough, however if you perceive it to be higher quality you might want to run a comparison as I'm not convinced you'll notice much difference.
However if you wish to proceed with the export, the only part I can see that might be causing you a problem is your data rate, you might want to try 2000 or even more, you might need to set your frame rate to 24 and check that you have export to 24p selected in your Voltaic preferences.
Finally, there isn't any reason your PC cannot play .m4v files, you only need to ensure that Quicktime is installed.
