Best settings for export for network access/viewing

I'd like to export various movies to h264 and store them on my imac g5 and use this as a video jukebox for access via my powerbook g4 over airport express. i want to be able to open the remote file and play it at the highest quality and smoothest possible playback. what would be optimal settings?
i've tried ripping a few dvds and other files at 640X480, 600 - 700 kbits/sec. at about 23 frames/sec. file size at those settings is great: 550-700mb but the playback is a bit jumpy... image quality is pretty good with just a little bit of pixilation.
should i push the bitrate further down? should i make the movie smaller... something less than 640X480?

hey jeff, thanks for the reply. i agree that h264 does indeed require a good bit of power. at the moment all i have is the airport express which shares my internet so i cannot really use ethernet. not to mention i prefer the freedom of wireless.
I think what confuses me is the bitrate. airport extreme is rated at 54 Mbps... should that not handle a movie file encoded at 500 or 700 or even 1,000 kbits/sec? am i not understanding the terminology of Mbps and kbits?
i'll add that since my original post i've been scaling the movies down as you mentioned and that helps a bit though there are still skips. should i go to 400 kbits/sec? smaller frame rate? currently i'm sticking with the original movie frame rate.
thanks again!

  • Best Settings for Exporting DVD Footage in a Movie File

    Hello,
I've been trying to find the best settings for exporting DVD footage into a movie file from Adobe Premiere CS6.
I recently have been using my Magnavox DVD recorder for recording VHS tapes that I made long ago for shows and various other things, and no matter what, my footage doesn't come out as it needs to be.
Here's an example of what I did recently with my own settings:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFV4sT7rHGs
I'm not expecting HD footage, I know these are tapes, but I'm playing the raw footage on my Xbox 360, and it looks better than this. I had to directly use the VOB files on the DVD for this, as trying to rip the files into an AVI or any other format with a DVD ripper didn't do anything, in fact it degraded the quality and made the audio not play in Premiere.
So what would be some good settings for exporting a sequence with DVD footage that is from a VHS into a movie file, preferably one that wouldn't degrade the quality?
    Thanks!

First, read Why not edit mpeg http://tangentsoft.net/video/mpeg/edit.html to get a general idea of why a VOB makes a very poor source file (which is a renamed MPG, with some other stuff like menu screens)
Also, Read Bill Hunt on editing a VOB/MPG file http://forums.adobe.com/thread/464549
Once you have a DVD compliant VOB on your timeline, and understanding that a standalone DVD recorder sometimes plays fast-n-loose with "compliance" per the DVD specification, about all you can do is export to standard or widescreen DV AVI and accept the fact that re-encoding an already compressed file is just not going to give great results

What version of Premiere Elements are you using on Mac?
Export your Timeline content to a .mp4 file, using export settings which have been customized under the Advanced Button/Video Tab of the export's preset.
See Publish+Share/Computer/AVCHD and .mp4 category. The exported file is then uploaded to YouTube at the YouTube web site.
If you post the properties of your source video and project settings, I will suggest the settings for the Timeline content export to file saved to the computer
hard drive for upload to YouTube at the YouTube web site.

  • Best settings for exporting from AE

    Hi,
I am wondering what the best settings to export to from AE for editing in Premiere CS5.5. Previously I would digitize from tape and would export lossless .avi from AE but now I am using XDCAM EX 1080 50i sequence presets on Premiere and I wonder if I should amend the settings from AE or just keep them as lossless?
    As always thanks in advance!

    Keep it lossless.

  • Best Settings for N Only Network.

I am trying to create an N only network with an AirPort Extreme 802.11n router. What are the best settings to use? Here is what I currently have. Also, just bought a previous generation MacBook Pro (one right before the new glass screen ones, do I need to use the N enabler?).
    802.11n only (5 ghz)
    Channel: Automatic
    Security: WPA2
    Multicast Rate: 6 mbps
    Use wide channels is selected.
    Thank you.

I am trying to create an N only network with an AirPort Extreme 802.11n router. What are the best settings to use?
Are you looking for the best settings for speed or overall speed and security?
    For speed:
    o 802.11n only (5 GHz)
    o Wide-channel enabled
o Channel: <Will depend if there are other 5 GHz Wi-Fis or interference nearby. In that case, you can choose a different channel by holding down the Option key before making the selection in the AirPort Utility.>
    o Security: None
o Multicast Rate: This determines the minimum bandwidth that a device must achieve in order to connect to the router. To eliminate slower devices, use the highest value possible.
    For speed & security:
The same settings as above with Security set to WPA2 Personal

thats way too vague of a question... best what?  quality? size? playback?
best quality then use high bitrate, small size use low bitrate.

  • Which are the best settings for exporting comps before edditing in Premiere Pro

    Hello everyone!
As the title says, which are the best settings for exporting comps from AE to Pr.Pro and then edit them?
Let  me explain: I have two comps in AE (intro and outro) and want to export  them in Pr.Pro for edditing along with a fottage i shot.
When i render them the size of the files are huge (30 sec= 7GB).
Which  is the best method (and settings) i can export the intro and outro to a 'normal' file  size and then put them in Pr.Pro without loosing any quality??
    [Comp settings: HDTV 1080 29.97 (1920x1080)]
AE and Premiere Pro both CS4

If you're rendering and exporting an intermediate video file to go from After Effects to any other piece of post-production software (such as Premiere Pro), you want to make sure that you're not losing any quality.
Most compression methods, which make movies smaller, also lose some of the image data---i.e., quality. There are a few compression methods that don't lose any image data; these are "lossless" codecs. These lossless codecs do decrease the size of a video file, but they're nowhere near as effective at decreasing size as the lossy codecs are. But file size isn't important when you're doing post-production work. Big files are a fact of life in post-production.
Examples of lossless codecs include the PNG codec and the Animation codec at the highest quality settings, both of which can be used in a QuickTime (.mov) container. I prefer the PNG codec; it's more efficient for photorealistic images, whereas Animation is more efficient for things like cartoons. There are lots of other lossless and nearly lossless codecs. A lot of people that do video editing like the Lagarith codec, but that is something that you'd have to go and get; it's not part of a standard CS5 or QuickTime installation.
See these FAQ entries for information about compression and why file sizes are big for losslessly encoded files:
"FAQ: Why is my output file huge...?"
"FAQ: What is the best format for rendering and exporting from After Effects?"
By the way, keep in mind that you don't always need to render and export an intermediate movie to go from After Effects to Premiere Pro. There are other ways to move data back and forth between these applications, including Dynamic Link. Which is best depends on the specific circumstance. See "Working with Premiere Pro and After Effects".

  • Best settings to export for the web?

    Hey everyone,
What do you think is the best setting to export video to web? I export now using quicktime and once in a while (I would like to use it more often since its much easier) compressor. So what is the best settings to export video to the web without having it get all blurry? I also use an XL2 so the video is good.

    JB
but I'm concerned about whether H264 is accessible by an audience outside the Mac umbrella.
    They need QT7 installed.
You can get Flip4Mac and add WMV export capabilities to QT. I'm sure that with a little of experimentation you'll get good results and the needed component isn't expensive.
    Hope that helps !

  • Best Settings for my Dv6-6117dx

I would like to know the best settings for my Laptop. This would be when I have my headphones in and off. I heard that the sound could be better and i would really appreciate if someone would tell me those settings so i would enjoy the music and other sounds that come out of this laptop

My settings appear to be the same and I've not had any problems with iPlayer yet.
    1. Ditto
    2. Ditto
    3. Not sure what application you are referring to here, but within iPlayer when you click Options you do NOT get a "Settings" selection. Perhaps you can explain how you got to the "Web Access point" choice?
My connectivity settings are similar but my default (and priority 1) is my home Wi-Fi/WLAN. So I would think that whenever iPlayer is downloading stuff, it is doing it through my home Wi-Fi.
And, yes, I also always get the "Allow connection to network" question when I select a programme to watch on iPlayer. Not a problem: takes one click to say yes.

  • "Wake for network access" doesn't seem to work

I have several Yosemite Macs.  My main Mac Energy Saver setting is set to wake for network access.  That's the only box checked (Display set to turn off after an hour).
I can't seem to get access to this computer on my network (get a "connection failed") after the display turns off.
Any other settings I need to set to cure this?

Please follow Linc Davis's advice to see if you have a Sleep Proxy server on your home network.  For example, here is what the command shows on my home network:
    dns-sd -B _sleep-proxy._udp local
    Browsing for _sleep-proxy._udp.local
    DATE: ---Sun 12 Apr 2015---
    16:34:14.530  ...STARTING...
Timestamp     A/R    Flags  if Domain        Service Type         Instance Name
    16:34:14.531  Add        3   5 local.        _sleep-proxy._udp.   30-35-10-70.1 Pantry
    16:34:14.531  Add        2   5 local.        _sleep-proxy._udp.   50-35-10-70.1 TV_Console
I have 2 Sleep Proxy servers active on my network (both are Apple Airport Extreme home WiFi Router base stations; the names Pantry and TV_Console are the management names I have given them).
If you DO NOT have a Sleep Proxy server, then you MUST use a special program to wake up a sleeping Mac.  WakeOnLan is one such program.
    <http://www.readpixel.com/wakeonlan/index.html>
The Sleep Proxy or WakeOnLan will send a specially composed network packet that the networking hardware listens for and will wake up the Mac when it is seen.
The Sleep Proxy server pretends to be your Mac while it is asleep, and if you attempt to connect to the Advertised service, the Sleep Proxy server will send that magic network packet to wake up the Mac, and forward the connection request to the new awake Mac.

  • "wake for network access" not working

    Hi guys,
I enabled System Preferences > Energy saver > Wake for network access
    and
System Preferences > Sharing > remote Login
These are the exact settings I had under Snow Leopard and it used to wake my iMac via 5GHz WiFi. I use a AirPort Extreme and didn't change a thing on its side. But neither with VNC nor with my iPad app "Screens" I am able to wake it under Lion. Screens tells me "Computer in sleep mode"...
    Any help?
    Thanks in advance,
    Bado

I've been having problems with wake for network access on Lion as well. Similarly to others, if my iMac has recently gone into sleep mode, then it will wake up for Apple TV use or for file and screen sharing from another computer. After an extended period of time, however, all such functionality disappears.
I've been rooting around in System Profile and have found something that may be of interest. Under the Hardware section, in the Power menu, there is a parameter called 'PrioritizeNetworkReachabilityOverSleep'. On both my iMac and Macbook this is set to zero (i.e. 'no').
Does anybody have any idea what it means? And if there is any way to change it? If I had to guess, it sounds as though there is a setting somewhere in the system configuration (thought apparently not visible from the GUI) that sets the computer to remain in sleep mode rather than briefly waking to maintain its registration with the relevant Bonjour sleep proxies.
Hopefully we'll be able to get to the bottom of this, as over six months after Lion's release the problem has yet to be resolved by Apple through version updates, something that is especially frustrating given how excellent a feature wake on network access is when it can be reliably coupled with an Apple TV or Back to my Mac.

  • Need advise on best settings for FCP 7!

I am looking for some advice on the best settings for FCP 7 when I am syncing sound using pluraleyes, exporting into quicktime as one file and then importing that new file into FCP 7 for editing. I have noticed that sometimes my Quicktime files are very large (20 gb) and sometimes they are much smaller (130 MB), but I never changed the settings.
I am working on FCP 7 and shot using my Panasonic GH3 at 24 fps (which comes to 23.98). My frame size is 1920x1080. Compressor is H.264. Data rate: 8.6 MB/sec. Audio rate: 48.0 KHz.  I have heard that FCP 7 does not properly deal with H.264. So, I am wondering, what should my settings be?  Should I set to "Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) 1920x1080 24p 48 kHz"?  Is there anything I need to know when I export to Quicktime 7 Pro in order to not reduce the quality of the video? Should I be changing my video files first before I even start to work on them?
I haven't edited in almost ten years so I am desperate need of some guidance!
Final Cut Pro 7, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

    Hi Shane Ross,
Thanks for your help.  So, I already synced all of my interviews in FCP 7 (using pluraleyes) before I changed the video to ProRess 422.  Can I just go into FCP (in the same project) and compress the video footage, import the new video files and throw it into the timeline? Or will this cause issues? I tried this as a test and it seems to be okay but I just want to check that there aren't any issues that I am not considering.
Also, when I do compress, it seems to take forever (sometimes two hours). Is there any way to make this move along faster?
    Thanks so much!

  • Best settings for PP mov's?

Got a few videos SD 720x486 I need to export from FCP 7 (uncompressed timeline) for use in a Powerpoint - what's best settings for PP? mov, h264, audio at 44 or 48k, what? Should we keep them at full 720 size, probably?
    Thanks
    K

ON a Mac or a PC?
WMV for the PC but learning how to embed is a function of learning how to use Ppoerpoint, not FCP's tools.
H.264? Dunno, what does the manual for PP say about compatible movie filetypes?
If you are handing these movies off to an experience PP producer, they will be able to give precise specs. If your'e doing this yourself, give yourself some extra time to work out the screwups. We have two wiseguys who insist on doing their own PP instead of letting our PP wonks do the jobs. They have never been able to figure out how to embed or link to movies and they do not understand why we tell them to have the movines in the same folder as the PP files.

  • Mac Pro won't wake for network access & streaming

I used to enjoy streaming media from my G5 to various UPnP devices, as well as streaming videos to my iPhone using Air Video and accessing the G5 from my MacBook over my home network, and over the internet using Back to my Mac. But after upgrading to a Mac Pro, I find it no longer wakes from sleep mode for network access of this kind. I can stream media and access it from my notebook while it’s awake, but when it goes to sleep after ten minutes, it disappears from the MacBook’s Finder sidebars and can no longer be reached with UPnP or Air Video.
Can anyone shed any light on this? Does the Mac Pro (or maybe Snow Leopard) sleep more deeply, and if so, is there any way around this? For the record, I have the Wake for Network Access box checked in Energy Saving preferences, and my network is controlled through a FRITZ!Box router; I don’t have a Time Capsule or AirPort Express.

If your still around or for anyone else:
Well, believe it or not sometimes you may have to enable and then re-enable it for it to "take".
It doesn't happen very often but every once in a while it seems to rear it's ugly head. It seems to be hit or miss on what program it comes up on.
Try going back into the "Energy Saver" (10.6.x) settings and un-check the box and then re-check it again, or un-check it then close the window then open it again and re-check the box.
    Hope it was that easy...
