Best settings for FCE4 for Canon HF100

Hey all,
Looking at editing some footage in FCE4 with my Canon HF100. Am wondering what the best settings are to have my FCE4 at from the get-go. Importing with a SanDisk MicroMate. DV-NTSC? AIC? What should I have it set as? I read FCE4 only supports up to 1440x1020 or something along those lines. How do I get to edit stuff in full 1920x1080?
Thanks,
KX

First, update to 4.0.1. Use the appropriate setting that matches your media.

  • What are the best settings to use for the newest AirPort Extreme (AC wifi) with my optimum online service provider?

I have the current generation of the AirPort Extreme and a handful of devices that utilize the new 5Ghz A/C frequency. My internet speeds were blazing fast when I had first set it up but lately it has been lagging terribly. I was told that changing my dhcp did help, which it did it seems like it might be back to its normal speeds but I just want to know what are the best settings to configure for the airport so that I can get the most out of my service on all my devices? I'm using a CAT 6 cable which does help, I have a guest wifi setup with a wifi password which I understand will slow it down a little. Can anyone just point me in the right direction or just give me a step by step guide on what settings to configure? Should I really consider turning off the guest network?

I am assuming that you are looking to configure your network to provide the highest level of bandwidth possible for your network clients. If that is the case, the following are a few things to consider:
The Internet modem should support Gigabit Ethernet. That is the Ethernet connection between the modem and your 802.11ac AirPort Extreme should be Gigabit Ethernet.
Use CAT-5e or CAT-6 Ethernet cables between all wired connections.
Only expect 802.11ac performance with 802.11ac clients in the same room as the base station.
Eliminate or significantly reduce any forms of Wi-Fi interference on both the 2.4 & 5 GHz bands.
When streaming, especially HD video on your local network, use wired connections between the host and player devices when possible.
Other than the above suggestions there are no "magic" settings that you can make on your AirPort. Note: The Guest network shares the same bandwidth as the "main" network. Unless you have a network goal to provide this type of network, it is best left disabled.

  • Best settings to export for the web?

    Hey everyone,
What do you think is the best setting to export video to web? I export now using quicktime and once in a while (I would like to use it more often since its much easier) compressor. So what is the best settings to export video to the web without having it get all blurry? I also use an XL2 so the video is good.

    JB
but I'm concerned about whether H264 is accessible by an audience outside the Mac umbrella.
    They need QT7 installed.
You can get Flip4Mac and add WMV export capabilities to QT. I'm sure that with a little of experimentation you'll get good results and the needed component isn't expensive.
    Hope that helps !

  • Best settings in Raytrace for glass effect?

I was wondering what are the best possible settings for the materials in a 3D text layer to make the letters look like glass, under the Raytrace renderer. I managed to achieve a rather decent metallic look with the aid of 3 lights, but the glass effect seems more difficult. For starters, I would like the letters to look like glass but not show so much detail of the other side of the letters, which depending on the angle makes it look like a double layer instead of extruded text. Turning down the Transparency percentage helps with this, but it makes the text look more like metal than glass.
I've been trying different things all day and I got a bit closer, but nowhere near something that looks real. Here are the settings I'm using:
Bevel Depth: 3 (the larger the number, the more the text gets fat. It doesn't work like the bevel style in Photoshop.
    Hole Bevel depth: 50
Extrusion depth: 30 (text size is 300px)
    Casts shadows: On
    Light transmission: 0%
    Accepts shadows: On
    Accepts lights: On
    Ambient: 100%
    Diffuse: 50%
    Specular intensity: 50%
    Specular shininess: 5%
    Metal: 0%
    Reflection intensity: 80%
    Reflection sharpness: 50%
    Reflection rolloff: 0%
    Transparency:100%
    Transparency rolloff: 0%
    Index of refraction: 1.00
    Any suggestions?

I finally got a chance to take a look at that project, and it looks amazing, but the glass comps still look too much like a 3D graphic than real glass. Is there a way to make it look more real? For example, I noticed that most effects do not work when the text layer is made 3D. Is there a way to apply a texture to a text layer? I imagine that would help. And another thing that I don't know if it's possible, but I can't seem to find: if the transparency is set to 100% or close, is there a way to blur or diffuse the back of the layer so that it doesn't show lines that are not as perfect as those on the foreground? Text can be confusing to read because the back of the letter is showing through (when text is extruded) and some lines can look double depending on the camera positioning. Think for example of an ice sculpture, where you see a shape that almost looks like glass but you can't see through as if it were glass. Is there a way to achieve that without a 3rd party plugin?

  • Best settings and Format for Motion Logo to FCP

I working on a project in FCP using video that is SD 16x9 anamorphic and was trying to import some logo's and lower thirds from Motion to this project. I was wondering what settings I should be using in Motion to maintain the correct pixel aspect and also keep the quality of the logo high. I have had problems recently with certain motion projects and the quality becoming very poor once in FCP.
Also, I believe I am supposed to use a square as pixel aspect with logo's in Motion, where should I adjust that setting, in Motion or FCP? Thanks,

There is no apostrophe in the plural form of logo any more than in the plural of third.
The workflow for anamorphic is clearly explained in the Motion manual. Where you get your logo is another issue. Why your quality is reduced in FCP is anyone's guess (apostrophe for possessive) and you have not provided any information that will help us figure that out for you. Was it squished? Was it pixelated? Wrong color? Fuzzy? Incorrect alpha?
*Using Square or Nonsquare Pixels When Creating Graphics*
*When you’re preparing to import graphics into Motion, it’s important to be aware of the pixel aspect ratio you’re using and whether your project requires you to work with square or nonsquare pixels.*
*Use nonsquare pixels for standard definition projects in NTSC or PAL.*
*Use square pixels for high definition projects, as well as multimedia video that will be played back only on computers and doesn’t use any captured video footage.*
*Graphics created on a computer, whether scanned, painted, or rendered, look distorted on a video monitor unless you account for the different pixel aspect ratio. Fortunately, this is easy to do, since every nonsquare video frame size has an equivalent square frame size that you can use to create your graphics.*

  • Best Settings using the new Canon HV30 and Final Cut Express HD v3.5.1?

My wife presents programs at schools and uses digital movies that we make and edit as one of her media materials.  We want to present higher quality videos that look more film-like. I am hoping that the combination I described above will enable this improvement. In the past we used a Canon ZR20 and iMovie HD and put these on DVD's that were then played on a MacBook Pro with with QuickTime or iDVD hooked up to an Epson PowerLite projector.
I am now the proud owner of a new Canon HV30 and Final Cut Express HD3.5.1 (had FCE for a while so know how to use it). From my research, though, it looks like FCE will not be able to handle CINE MODE recording in combination with 24fps progressive frame rate [HDV(PF24)] which would allow the enhanced effect of the Cinema Mode. I can't justify the cost of Final Cut Studio 2 so I am hoping that the new [HDV(PF30)] will allow me to more easily edit in FCE.
Does anyone know if this is true and if so can please tell me the settings that I need both on the camera and in FCE to get the best quality movie that can played directly from my MacPro using QuickTime or iDVD or from a DVD in the MacPro using the iDVD player. I won't have the opportunity to always play the videos directly from the camera to an HDTV because of the school setting and the need to use a projector.
I know this is a lot to ask for, but I am sure that it will come up again and again as more people purchase this new camera. Thanks for your time.
    Sincerely,
    Lou Hosta

Without totally repeating myself with my post to MaccyLeopard, I haven't shot any footage yet. After doing a lot of reading I think I confused myself more than helped myself as far as settings go. So if you remember from my initial post I am asking for advice and guidance primarily on camera settings with the HV30 that will be used in a classroom (artroom) setting and then edited using FCE HD v3.5.1. I wish I was the type of person that could jump right into using a new piece of equipment but I like to get the advice of others beforehand. That way I'm not always questioning myself as to 'whether or not is this the best I can get'. I also am wondering if the 30fps frame mode would be the best to use in the classroom setting? From my reading, this mode should allow more light onto the tape allowing me to shoot in conditions with lower light levels that are typically found inside? Finally, is FCE HD able to edit this new 30 fps frame mode of the HD30? I've heard that FCE HD can't handle the 20 fps frame mode.
Thanks for taking the time to help me out.
    Sincerely,
    Lou Hosta

  • Best settings for 1080p 24fps footage

    Hi all,
Shooting great stuff at 1080p 24fps with a Canon DSLR. My audio is 48 at 24bit. I am wondering what my best settings would be for:
    1) Full size, full quality
    2) A more manageable size (50%?) at full quality
I realize that the end use matters. I am shooting webisodes, so they will wind up on my own website as lightbox videos and eventually on sites such a YouTube.
    Thanks!
    Scott

It's about efficient and fast workflow, not about quality.
But, FYI, you can't see true video quality on your computer screen. Put it on a professional production monitor, and use video scopes to see a difference.
The image quality is not what is the issue here. It's file management. ProRes HQ makes a very large file size, stresses your system out more, and gives you no extra advantages. XDCAM is a Long-GOP codec, which stresses your system out more, but you keep small file sizes. ProRes 422 (or ProRes (LT)) will give you a good balance between the two, and help your CPU, data pipes, hard drives, RAM, etc handle the very taxing data flow of video streaming in RT that is desired for video editing.
Long-GOP formats will require more rendering (less RT performance), and when you do render, they will have to "conform", making things fie the Long-GOP frame structure again. When you export, it takes longer, due to the specific and complex arranging of specific types of frames in proper order due to the Long-GOP format. Compressor transcodes will take much longer to perform.
Again, it's about efficient and fast workflow, not about quality.

  • What are the best settings for a retina display image?

If we Export for Web then view it on a retina display monitor, the image lines look blurry and it's not as crisp as non-retina display monitors.
What are the best settings when intended for retina display monitors while keeping the file size down?
    Thanks!

Mark, yes a DVD will play back on a HDTV, just the quality will not match the capability of the playback device. This is certainly the easiest approach though.
As the article you referenced says, ensuring that your previews are set to a larger pixel dimension than your required output will ensure maximum quality, given that you will more than likely have movement on the images in the slide show I would suggest going with pixel dimensions that are at least 1920px.
Let us know how you go.

  • Best settings for MPEG Streamclip

    Hi all,
Being forced to work off DVD source due to lack of options and want to ensure that I get the best possible results. Am using MPEG Streamclip and did a trial run to convert it into DV, converted the audio to 48khrz.
Picture was real time but audio needed rendering.
Can anyone advise me on the best possible settings for quality and realtime playback?
I'll be deliving in uncompressed quicktime and DVD.
Also, new to FCE and want to know where the best place to store the files I convert? Is this what the Sctatch disk is for?
Thanks in advance for your help, work on a weekend is never fun but you might just be able to help me get to the pub for a bit at least!

You converted to the wrong format. Do not convert to DV. Convert to QuickTime using DV PAL as the compressor. The frame rate is 25fps. The quality slider makes no difference.
You can only work in DV or Apple Intermediate Codec for HD in FCE. You cannot work in uncompressed formats so you're media has to be converted to DV.
I'm doing the same thing, but I'll be needing NTSC. I see in the Export to Quicktime dialog that there is no simple DV NTSC listed. The most promising-looking compression formats appear to be Apple DVCPRO50 - NTSC, Apple DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, Apple Intermediate Codec, Apple FCP Uncompressed 8(or 10)-bit 4:2:2.
Or is it better to use the Export to Other Formats dialog, and select QuickTime?
This is the first time I've used MPEG Streamclip (and I've only recently started using FCE 4), so I'm a little confused. What are the best settings to use for video that will be imported to FCE for NTSC?
    Thanks.

  • Best settings for project with multiple format sources

New to Premiere Pro after leaving FCP behind and I feel like I've got enough under my belt to start a new project. Working in PP CS6.
Question: my source footage is going to be in many different formats from ripped flash video to footage shot on a C300; includes stills, QT files, etc. (My work involves a lot of found footage, image recycling, etc.)
I want to finish most likely at 1920x1080; exhibition will be festivals, but also DVD, streaming, etc. And I want to work in 24p.
What would be the best settings to use for this project? What codec? Etc?
In FCP I would have used Prores 422, but wonder if something native to PP would be better.
    Thank you.

Assuming the C300 footage will be 1080p/24, I'd probably work in that sequence myself.  Or possibly 720p/24 if the other assets were smaller than 1080.

  • Advice on sequence settings - frame size for VHS video in FCP

    Hello,
I was hoping that I could get some advice on editing and output for video captured from VHS Tapes to ensure the best quality possible.
My current workflow to digitize the VHS tapes is:
VHS signal from JVC S7600u with TBC into ADVC 300 (no de-interlace or other filters set) into a Mac Pro via firewire.  Capture preset in FCP is DV NTSC 48khz.
Once in FCP - the captured VHS video frame size is 720 X 480, Vid rate is 29.97, pixel aspect is NTSC-CCIR 601 and field dominance is lower (even)
    My questions are:
If my final destination is for You Tube sharing , are these the best sequence/ frame size settings or should I convert the sequence frame size to 640 X 480, or should I leave at 720 X 480 while working in FCP and then output to Compressor and select the H264 you tube sharing video setting and change the frame size to 640 X 480?
Should I de- interlace for internet/youtube destination?
    Should I de-interlace for DVD/TV destination?
If I want to burn the finished project to DVD and watch the video on a progressive montitor/ TV screen, what would be the best settings/frame size for that?
If any of you out there have experience with editing vcr/analog video in FCP and have a good workflow to ensure best quality, I would really appreciate  any advice/suggestions.
    Thanks in advance.

Digitize to 720X480 frame size in FCP. In compressor, your YouTube preset will automatically deinterlace and a square pixel aspect ratio. No deinterlacing for DVD.

  • Optimal settings for export from 1080p camcorder - Canon HF100

I just bought an HF100 camcorder. When I make projects with iMovie what are best export settings for 1080p projects? What about for 480p for a DVD. I tried to export 1080p video and it looks grainy. I'm not sure if this is the fault of the camera or iMovie?
Also, when I play clips inside imovie the playback is choppy. Is there anyway to fix this?

I'm using a HF10, and I don't think iMovie '08 properly detects that 1080p recordings from these camcorders are progressive scan, but rather treats then like 1080i clips. I find I get better results by recording in the default 1080i if there's sideways motion in the video. That doesn't really surprise me - according to the AVCHD consortium website, there's no such thing as 1080p in AVCHD (see http://www.avchd-info.org/format/index.html).
DVDs are always interlaced anyway, so for best results you want to start with 1080i and not 1080p. I export at 960x540i, using the Quicktime export option selecting "High" quality mode. The default "Large" sharing option in iMovie uses a bitrate that I find too low for getting the best quality.
When you export at 1080p, what is your bitrate set to? That makes a lot of difference.
Finally, 1080p playback is very hard work for your computer. Try quitting other applications before playing back your video to get a smooth experience. Or export at 540p.

  • Interlaced or Progressive settings in FCE for Canon HF100 (pf25)?

    1. I'm filming with a Canon HF100 in the pf25 setting.  This is a progressive setting I believe.
        >> Is the Canon HF100 pf25 setting a progressive one?
    2. I heard that for full quality therefore I have to change the settings of my clips and sequence when they are imported in FCE.

I change the settings in FCE by going to the browser, choose sequence/ clips
with the rightmouse touch and choose Fielddomminance. Then I change it from upper odd to none.
I have to do this with each single clip I use.

  • Best settings for editing MP4 videos in Pre9?

    Hello!
I have some MP4 video's that I wish to edit.
When I edit them and try and save them, I am struggling to find the best settings to use.
If I try making them Pal DVD widescreen the motion is very jerky.
If I use H264 wide screen the file is enormous.
For example the mp4 is 1Gb, when edited and saved as H264 the file is 18.4Gb.
    Any one have any suggestions?
    Cheers.

You're welcome, and thank you for the reply.
    2) Yesterday I made the subclips with the In-Out Points and Command-U, the benefit is that I've seen the clip before naming it. Now I'm using markers, it's benefit is that I can write comment and (the later) clip name at once, the drawback is that I have to view to the next shot's beginning before knowing what the shot contains.
But now I found out that I can reconnect my clips independently to the format I converted the master clip to. I reconnected the media to the original AVI file and it worked, too! The more I work with, the more I'm sold on it... - although it doesn't seem to be able to read and use the date information within the DV AVI.
    1) Ok, I tried something similar within FCE. Just worked, but the file size still remains. Which codec settings should I use? Is the export to DV in MOV with a quality of 75% acceptable for both file size and quality? Or would be encoding as H.264 with best quality an option for archiving, knowing that I have to convert it back to DV if I (maybe) wan't to use it for editing later? Or anything else?
    Thank's in advance again,
    André
