Best settings for web video

I am going to encode some videos of a Dr.'s office I shot with a Canon xh-a1 in widescreen sd to the web. I am thinking 320x240 but do not know what the best type of file to use for the web.  Also I have noticed that there are black borders at the top and bottom when I chose a format even when I have it in 1.333 ratio. Any way around this?  Any file size, compression settings I should keep in mind? These videos will be a part of a website.  Thanks for any help.

As per Jim's comments, I'd start with the intended site to see what their specs were and use those as the starting point. If YouTube, then that would be what I'd go with. Vimeo, the same, and on down the list. Each one might do the best with different settings.
If you are going to the Web on your own site, then your Web designer will have the specs for what is preferred, both in format, and size to fit the design of the page. They can also tell you if you need to embed the material in a player.
Good luck,
Hunt

thats way too vague of a question... best what?  quality? size? playback?
best quality then use high bitrate, small size use low bitrate.

  • Best settings for 4k video in Premiere Pro CS6

I am trying to nail this down. I have an (Asus G20AJ Series) ASUS i7 3.6 Ghz with 16GB RAM 64 bit. I now have a drone that uses 4k video. I am pretty sure I have the rendering down but I wanted to ask if you guys can suggest options for all the best settings for setup, playback and export of the video. My drone does video of 4096x2160 @23 fps. When I went to render the 6 minute file, wow, it was going to take more than 4 hours! Is this right? Any info you can suggest would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you!

4 hours sounds about right for this source material on such a system. Better hardware may be needed to reduce the exporting time or you have to convert the source material to a less demanding format.

  • Best settings for web streaming

I made an 11 minute film in imovie. I want to put it on my website. I am told that loading it into Quicktime Pro, and then exporting it will give me lots of choices for settings, to optimize the quality and the speed for web viewing. A friend told me to use mp4 at 30 frame at 640 X 480 for acceptable quality. Youtube seems to agree with that. Unfortunately, The resultant quicktime export was a 74 mB file. That seems awfully large for the web. I also tried saving it directly from imovie as an "email", which doesn't allow any tweaking, and that version was 18 mB, and a bit small for web viewing.
This morning, I've looked through many posts here, but I can't find one place that gives clear opinions for settings for streaming video over the web. I realize there's a lot of choices, so opinions will differ. Nonethless, , but I'd really be happy to have just two or three choices, with all the Quicktime Pro settings spelled out for me. Can someone do that?
And lastly, what size — both file size and screen size — should I be using for this 11 minute web viewable film?

I have a similar problem with excessively large files resulting from use of the "export for web" function.
I have a range of self-contained quicktime movies averaging about 20MB in size. They are all encoded in MPEG4 or H264.
Exporting for "desktop" results in some files being over 75MB in size.

  • Best settings for ipod video playback on TV

I would like to know which video format is the best for a very good video playback on TV using ipod video ? And which settings choose for the video to have the best possible quality on TV, while still being able to store a lot of videos on the ipod.
I use a 1.67ghz powerbook, and the convertion process is so long, is it normal for it to be that long. I thought that powerbook were suppose to be really fast. Would buying more ram help ?
    thank you

If you're using QuickTime Pro's "Movie to iPod", then you're getting very good video quality. The reason why this takes so long is that instead of just compressing the video, it first examines the entire video looking for places that may be a little more difficult to encode (cross fades, cuts, high motion) then spending more time on them in the second pass. So, yeah, it's normal to take that long, but, in this case, that's how you get the best output.
Depending on your source (if it's from a VHS tape or something like that) you might want to download MPEG Streamclip and try H.263 or H.264 with only one pass. It's a bit faster and the results still look pretty good so that may suit you as well.

  • [E71 on Linux] Best settings for encoding video?

    Hello all,
I have an E71 and I would like to encode videos on my Linux box for it.
I have a script for that, using MPlayer's MEncode. I'd like to know what are the best settings, i.e.: Resolution, Video Bit rate, Audio Bit rate and Codec / file format.
Also, what is the best video player out there for the Symbian 9.1 3rd., preferably a freeware app...
I have DivX Mobile installed and the built-in Real Player (very poor quality playback - maybe because incorrect encoding?)
    Thanks!

Enough of the data you need is most likely on these two pages:

  • Best settings for web, quicktime 6 compatible

what are the best settings to use in compressor to put a movie trailer on a web site so that it is compatible with quicktime 6 and 7? I'm looking for something like the "broadband high" setting in quicktime 6, but now that I have quicktime 7, I can't seem to make a good quicktime 6 and 7 compatible file.
    Thanks,
    Mike

when you say you want it to be compatible with QT 6 and 7, what you really mean is that it must be QT 6 compatible (because that's automatically compatible with any higher version).
in Compressor, you'll find a QT 6 compatible preset setting way down in this folder: Apple -> Other Workflows -> Web -> Download -> QuickTime 6 Compatible.
you'll see a bunch of presets in there. oddly there's an MPEG-1 option, but in general you want to use any of the MPEG-4 options. They are labeled as low, med, or high bandwidth.

  • Best  compressor settings for web videos shot on canon 7d?

    Hello,
I've started shooting video on the Canon 7d.  I usually compress my videos for youtube as MP4 at 300 Kbps.  However my last video had a presenter with background music track added.  When I did my first export to compressor without the music background all the audio of the presenter was perfect.  When I added a soundtrack in the background the presenter's voice was distorted, sounding like a Dalek!
I got better results with less distortion when I re compressed the video as MP4 800 kbps.  Can anyone please recommend better settings that would give much superior sound and picture with zero distortion?
    Much appreciated.
    thanks

Did you try using the YouTube preset?

  • Best settings for YouTube video?

I've just finished editing my first video in iMovie and would like to export it to upload to YouTube. The YouTube site asks for MPEG4 at 320x240 pixels, 30fps, with MP3 audio. But what about all the other settings in the advanced export settings? Does anyone know what they should be for best results?
    Thanks in advance.

    This, from Karsten Schlülter (YouTuber):
I recommend in the expert settings:
    mpeg4 as comprossor
    in the options:
    320x240 (youtube's "native" res)
30 fps (for fast action), 15 fps (to generate smaller files for longer movies)
the bitrate slider...- 500kB/sec is an excellent quality for such res (and generates laaarge files), but the conversion at youtube adds a lot of artfifacts...

  • Best settings for converting videos

I share your grief. I converted all my videos for the Apple TV and now have to re-covert them to the iPod format to get them to play on my iPhone. I am a massive Mac fan, but this has left me a bit po'd. Not to mention it's further bloating up my iTunes library, which has turned into a sloth since adding in all the media for my Apple TV. I'm now at 97+ gigs. The rest of my machine is fast (DUal 2.3 G5 tower with 2.5gb ram) but iTunes is a dog.

  • Best settings for web sampler

I'm just getting into making (and soon selling, I hope) short documentary-type films, using my Sony FX7E. The saleable products will be quarter-size .MOVs (960 x 540) until Blu-ray etc becomes more accessible, and I can get great quality at that size, but I want to put short (20 seconds) .MOV samplers online on my website at about 320 x 180. I've been having a lot of trouble finding the right parameters for QT conversion - the results are either 4:3, or simply awful quality, or immense, or all three, etc.
What would anybody suggest as a suitable set of QT parameters to get a 16:9 .MOV out, at about 320 or so wide, and reasonably small enough in bytes to put on the web, yet with the best visual quality possible? Anybody discovered the best compromise please?

What version of Premiere Elements are you using on Mac?
Export your Timeline content to a .mp4 file, using export settings which have been customized under the Advanced Button/Video Tab of the export's preset.
See Publish+Share/Computer/AVCHD and .mp4 category. The exported file is then uploaded to YouTube at the YouTube web site.
If you post the properties of your source video and project settings, I will suggest the settings for the Timeline content export to file saved to the computer
hard drive for upload to YouTube at the YouTube web site.

    Hello All...
Back after a brief absence, things look a little bit different.
I'm trying to take a 16 minute mini dv video and compress it for use on the web. I'm interested in any suggestions you may have on settings for the video and audio tracks. I've tried using Sorenson 3 (15 frames, key frames set to automatic, 320 x 240) for video and IMA 4:1 (mono) for audio. The resulting video looked great but the file size came in at about 255 Mb.

Thank you for the replies.  Everyone was correct about the jack, interface, and phasing problems.  I have been unplugging my motu audio interface and then using headphones at work.  I have not changed any detailed audio output settings in logic.  When I read that the jack might be a problem I tried switching headphones.  This actually helped.  I am using dre-beats headphones and they seem to be having issues with the mac/jack-(the phasing/panning problems.  I can use these headphones with other devices but not the mac.  I have to use ipod ear buds and the phasing seems fixed.  Hopefully this information is helpful to someone else.
If anyone knows how to correct this issue please let me know its difficult to know what my final mixes are going to sound like and I have had to keep bouncing everything into i-tunes- sync to ipod and then listen in my car radio.
