Best signal booster for airport express
Need to boost the signal in my house for better coverage. I have a model A1264 Airport express.
What is the best and easiest way to increase signal coverage without having to to move the location of the airport.
Thanks,
JJ
Add another AirPort Express and configure the setup to "extend a wireless network". Keep in mind that you will need to locate the new "remote" AirPort Express where it can receive a strong signal from the "main" Express.
Apple's instructions for this setup are here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4259
The example pictures two AirPort Extreme devices, but the set up for two AirPort Express devices is exactly the same.

Best wifi hardware for airport express
Hi
m looking for ideas for buying the best wifi hardware (accespoint) good for running the airport express.
I have an asus wifi-onboard card right now, but the card looses connection after aprox one hour - then I have to reassosiate with the airport express.
thanksWith regards to wireless interface adapters for PCs - any make/model should work just fine. If you want to try an alternative, stick with a product from one of the big names in the business of making these adapters like Linksys, Netgear, D-Link, or Intel.
That being said - there are common causes for "dropped connections" other than a "bad card". Interference from neighboring wireless networks and 2.4 GHz portable phones, for example, will also cause problems exactly like you describe. Before replacing the card, you might experiment with changing the wireless channel of the Airport Express (try 1 or 11) - a setting found under the Airport tab of the Airport Admin Utility. -
External signal booster for Airport extreme card
I'm trying to find a solution to boosting the signal receiving capabilities of my Apple 15" Powerbook G4 with an Airport Extreme Card.
I live in an area that receives several WiFi non-encrypted signals, which my Airport can detect (weakly), but I need to boost the signal that the airport receives.
Let me make this clear, I am not attached, or connected to ANY router, or DSL system, I am only receiving open WiFi signals.
I need to find a signal booster, or directional antenna. (I’d rather not crack open the Power Book to attach the hardware).
I’ve looked at several 3rd party options i.e. Linksys, Netgear, Hawkings, D-link, most do not support Mac ( so often)
I currently use a Hawking Tech directional PCI wireless card 802.11 B/G mixed mode. It works well enough with Mac, but it is often buggy, and yes I do turn of Airport when I use it. But I’d rather use the built in Airport with an external booster. I’m open to suggestions, Mac or 3rd Party, though the ‘Pringles can’ doesn’t work. thanks

Best signal repeater with airport
what signal repeater works best with the airport exreme?
Another AirPort Extreme would be "best", but if all that you really need to do is extend the WiFi signal wirelessly, an AirPort Express would do this nicely.
If you do not have a means to back up your Mac, a Time Capsule can both extend the WiFi signal and handle the backups from your Mac(s). Click on the link below for more information on the three options that you have:

What's the life expectancy for airport express
My wi-fi signal from my airport express seems to be getting weaker every month for about 3 months now.
Is that the ap express or something else? The signal that you are getting is on the low side. If you are within 10-15 feet of the Express, it should look more like 60-65%. Noise is about average. Any obstructions in the signal path?
It's more complicated, but also more accurate to use SNR measurements to get an idea of signal quality. Post back if you want more info about this.
"Automatic" is usually your best choice since the Express will scan available channels and pick the best one. But, it won't do this "automatically". You have to pull the power on the device and restart it for it to perform a new scan. You may find yourself needing to do this daily. In a tough interference area, that is not unusual.
You can certainly experiment with setting the channels manually, but which channel to choose? Utilities like iStumbler will not display "closed" or "hidden" networks....and a lot of users make use of this feature to "hide" their network....so if iStumber "sees" 7-8 networks, there are others....probably another 4-5 at least.....that iStumber cannot "see", so no way to know what channel they are using.
iStumber cannot "see" cordless phones or wireless security systems as well, so it's really more of a guessing game than a logical approach to choosing the "right" channel.
If all of your devices can connect using 5 GHz, there are only a fraction of wireless networks using that band...for now...so there are far fewer interference issues in this airspace.
The Apple Store can certainly test your AirPort Express....but you already know what will likely happen if you take it to them....it will perform perfectly there.
Move the Express as far away as possible from anything else that is electronic and also away from any wiring from the satellite box or cable box...that can cause issues as well. Turn off the cordless phones for a few hours....if you have them....to see if that might make a difference. -
Can I extend my Sky wireless signal with an AirPort Express?
Hi,
I recently got an AirPort Express in the hope that I would be able to extend my wireless signal to areas that currently have a weak and unreliable signal from my Sky SR101 router. I am currently able to do this with an old Belkin 'Wireless G Universal Range Extender' but it is not ideal - it's quite temperamental, it has to be reset from time to time and it also provides pretty low speeds. I've tried configuring the basics for the AirPort Express but can't seem to get it to work. I've seen on the forums that some people think it is impossible to extend a non-Apple base station's signal with an AirPort Express while others have managed to get it to work. I would suspect that if I am able to do it with an outdated Belkin range extender I should be able to with a brand new AirPort Express - I don't know!
Very grateful for any thoughts/comments/solutions.
Thanks for reading.Perhaps have one connected to the Sky router with an Ethernet cable and then boost the signal from that one with the other? Would that work?
If the 1st Gen AirPort Express really is a 1st Gen, then yes, you could do this.
Check on the side of the AirPort Express for the model number.....hard to see in the faint print.....so you may need a magnifying glass.
A 1st Gen AirPort Express is model number A1264. -
Is there any antenna for airport express?
I think i´m having problemas with the signal of my airport express and all the readings i made always refer antennas for airport extreme base station.
My question is, if there is any antenna for airport express that don´t needs an extreme base station.
Thanks

Pentium IV Windows XP ProTwo quick things to check using AirPort Utility on both devices:
On your "main" base station
Open AirPort Utility - click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab/label located just below the row of icons
There must be a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended"
Click Update to save your changes.
If you don't see this option, you likely have an older AirPort Extreme that does not support the "extend" feature. Please clarify on the version that you have
On your AirPort Express
Open AirPort Utility - click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network
Wireless Name = Same name as your main network
Check mark next to "Allow wireless clients"
Wireless Security = Same setting as your main router
Wireless Password = Same password as your main network
Confirm Password
Click Update to save settings
If you do not see the "Extend a wireless network setting", you may have an older AirPort Express, or if you are sure that you have a newer 802.11n model, try holding down the option key while you click on the selection box to see if the "Extend" setting will appear.
Assuming no major obstructions between the main router and area that needs more wireless coverage, a good starting location for the Express would be a point that is approximately half the distance between the main router and the area that needs more coverage.
As I said, this feature works very well if major obstructions do not come into play. -
What is the best way to use Airport Express?
What is the best way to use Airport Express?
It would really depend on your networking goals.
The AirPort Express can be used for a number of things:
Internet router
Wireless Access Point
Ethernet switch
Wireless Ethernet bridge
Network print server
AirPlay speaker
Portable travel router
... or some combination of the above. -
PIN-based guest access for airport express
how do I setup PIN-based guest access for airport express?
I have a 2010 iMac OS X 10.6.8 and an Airport Express of the same era.
Thanx in advanced...
SiegfriedHello Bob,
Thank you for your time on this. I apologize for not giving you a more complete picture of what was going on.
I should have included that I had already performed the steps that you shared and had gotten to the place where I would enter the PIN.
The problem was that, after entering a PIN that I had come up with, the "continue" button never became active. I called Apple Care and ended up talking to 3 different people before I found someone that knew the answer. The answer is that the guest computer (client) MUST be present inorder for me to complete the setup. So, problem is now solved. Thanx...

If there are any updates, you will be notified.
If there are not any updates, you have already have the latest firmware. -
Mini-UPS solution for Airport Express
Hello Airport community! This is my first post.
I'm wondering if anyone has had any luck with a battery backup (UPS) for Airport Express'. I have a larger UPS for my Time Capsule which is the main access point. I've hardwired this one into the network to broadcast the same network but extend the range. If the power goes off, since a number of devices are connected to the second, I'd like to have it on back up as well. However, it's installed very in a tidier manner in a smaller area – no room here for a big APC UPS.
I've been able to find 12 V battery backups, but nothing for the Airport since it's a 120/240 V input.
Anyone have any ideas of how this might be accomplished?
Cheers,
DavidAs a completely different kind of solution.. Although John's battery and car inverter idea is creative.. and will work..
Use an extreme or something else that is dc powered.. You can buy a cheap second hand extreme for $30-50 on ebay or whoever has your second hand market. It can even be a different brand.. tp-link, edimax etc.. most are 12v which is excellent.. then power it down the ethernet. So you don't even need a power point.
I'm wondering if anyone has had any luck with a battery backup (UPS) for Airport Express'. I have a larger UPS for my Time Capsule which is the main access point.
Plug the 12v power supply into your UPS.. with the TC.. and buy a set of injectors for ethernet..
They look like this.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/PoE-Power-Over-Ethernet-Injector-Splitter-Adpater-Kit-/3 60843249285?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_2&hash=item5403ef0685
Just a few dollars.. they passively use the extra pairs to carry power over the ethernet wiring.. you can also buy active sets but they are more expensive but keep the line at gigabit.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/TP-Link-POE200-Power-over-Ethernet-Adapter-Kit-Injector- Splitter-5-9-12V-DC-Out-/181210762297?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a3100cc39
I have not hunted for cheapest but I have tried to keep price in mind.
There was a time when Apple used POE in the old domed Extreme.. and that was very handy.. the Express should have always had it.. it is a natural to power over ethernet rather than require power outlet next to it. -
How to find MAC address for WAN port for Airport Express 2nd Gen.
The New Airport Express has a LAN and a WAN ethernet ports. How can I find the MAC address for the WAN ethernet port as my Service Provider needs it for provisioning....I can fid MAC address for Ethernet and for two wireless 2.4 & 5GHz but not for WAN ethernet port using Airport Utility 6.1
Many thanks for the swift response. However, there is no WAN MAC address on the box or on the device anywhere. I even used magnifying glass to find one .
The airport utility shows only three mac addresses. One for 2.4GHz, one for 5GHz and one fo the ethernet (LAN port) whereas there is another ethernet port in the device mentioned as WAN port and I am still not able to find the MAC address for the WAN ehternet port for Airport Express (2nd Generation).
Will appreciate a response to make th device work wiht my service provider as providing them the WAN mac address is a must. Had there been an option for cloning mac address, the issue would have not been there.
Many thanks again - in advance. -
I need to get internet to both the house and my office, which is in a separate building approx 20m from the house. I was advised by Apple to buy an Airport Express, set it up on one or other building, and connect wirelessly to the other. Tried that, but couldn't get a reliable signal.
I was then advised to buy another Airport Express and use it as an expander in the other building. Trouble is, i can't get a reliable wireless signal between the two Expresses, so it keeps dropping the connection, and is slow when it is connected.
I rang Apple again and was told that i could try a third Airport Express between the two existing ones, but that is impossible as there is only outdoors between the two.
It would be very difficult and expensive to get an ethernet cable between the two buildings (have to cut through concrete etc), and I see from the discussion forums that an Airport Extreme has the same wireless signal as an Express, so replacing one of the Expresses with an Extreme seems unlikely to resolve the problem. Can anyone think of any other options? The Powerline adapters mentioned by edex67 are your only hope if you cannot run an Ethernet cable.
Even if the home and office are on the same electrical circuit, you won't really know how well the Powerline adapters might work until you actually try them out at your location.
For that reason, it would be a good idea to understand the store's return policy before you buy. -
What amplifier would work best for Airport Express?
I have built in a ceiling speakers in all my rooms and all the rooms have their own apple macmini or laptop
All wiring of the speakers come to a central media room, and in this, I want to place 8 airport express to allow each room to be able to play through itunes onto their ceiling speaker. Effectively we could also put all speakers on from one room and create a party mode
The problem is that airport express requires powered speakers and these ceiling speakers are not powered of course. This means I would need to put an amplifier between the airport express and the speaker (I think)
Just wondering if anyone has successfully done this?
I have had a look at multi zone amplifier like
http://www.htd.com/whole-house-audio/mid-level-whole-house-audio/MCA-66-Audio-Co ntroller-Amplifier
Most multi zone amplifiers have their own keypad, but with apple you do not require this as you can control it straight from your mac! So what I want to do is control the INPUT level on the amplifier, and fix the output level on the amplifier, if I am thinking right..... as I thought this would work best ...
then if you put the volume control on the mac to MAX the amplifier would already be preset to max and the ceiling speakers would rock
Any suggestions or .....
Thankshttp://www.macworld.com/article/143258/2009/10/airtuneswholehomeaudio.html
In this Macworld article, they just use multiple Parasound Zamps, which are single zone amps that turn on and off by themselves, depending on when sound is passing through. I'm planning on doing this with my new construction because it looks like a simple setup with no remotes needed save the iPhone, which I always have on me. -
What is the best printer to buy for Airport Express printing?
Help! I need a new printer.
Required features:
• under $300
• multi-function (fax not required)
• auto-document feeder
• prints 2 sided
• USB to Airport Express, or itself be wireless printer--(bluetooth seems to not have the range I need: 35-60 feet)
• affordable ink
• photo printing a plus, not required
• color printing a plus, not required.
I bought a Canon PIXMA MP780 only to discover that it is incompatible with Airport Express! The PIXMA MP750 seems an option (for printing only--Airport seems not to work with Scanning). But the 750 seems to be all but unavailable anymore.
I am considering upgrading from my old iBook G3 600mHz to a PowerBook G4, but this shouldn't make much difference regarding which printer to buy.
Any help? What printers have worked well for you?
Thanks,
Stephen
iBook G3 600mHz Mac OS X (10.4.4) 640mb RAMObviously I would prefer to be able to use scanning over the wireless, but I am content to plug it in directly as needed, especially if there were a second USB port on the printer.
Do you know this Brother machine you suggest? Do you recommend it? Does it have all the features I mention above?
Do you know the Canon MP750? I am told it does print through Express.
Thanks for your help.
Stephen
Do you want all functions of your new all-in-one
printer be accessible over a wireless connection, or
are you content to live with wireless printing but
plugging the printer directly into your Mac's USB
port each time you want to scan something? For all
functions to work over a wireless connection you
really need a network-ready all-in-one printer - and
finding a good one that costs under $300 could be a
real challenge (the Brother MFC-420CN is one of the
few).
