any body got ideas on whats the best one to get thats does not put a hole in your pocket ??

I happen to think that the Zalman 7000 AlCu ($34.00 US) CPU fan Is the Most quiet CPU Fan on the Market today (Due to it's hard wired speed control) and it is also big enough 96mm to keep a CPU cool at minimum RPM'S..And it is Powerful enough to Keep Overclocked CPU'S Cool too ...I leave mine on 100% Speed all the Time (Due to my CPU being OCed to 3.6 from 3.2) but even at 100% the Max rpm of the Fan is 2,700 RPM'S..........As far as Controling the Fan on a VGA Card, well as far as all stock setups to date, the answer is No.......There are some Aftermarket VGA Coolers that come with Variable Control fans on them though....I believe "Thermaltake" Makes one.................Sean REILLY875

Portege R600 - Difference between cooling options

I have a Portege R600 with Windows 7 installed, but I guess my query is generic to all Porteges regardless of the version of Windows.
Could someone please explain to me what the different "cooling options" in the power settings actually mean? I couldn't find details anywhere.
Does battery optimized mean that the cpu fan gets activated only beyond a certain temperature? And what's the difference between cooling and maximum performance?
Is there any other way to set the cpu fan speed directly?
This is a very important point to me, because the fan of the Portege is terrible, too noisy, to the extent that I am considering return the laptop unless I find a solution. Sometimes it sounds like a Ferrari engine at a billion rpms!

However, my problem was quite the opposite: optimizing battery life causes the fan to stay off most of the times but to make the noise of a Ferrari engine at max speed when it activates. Optimizing performance, instead, means the fan is almost always on but barely noticeable, and never makes the disturbing Ferrari-like noise.
Maybe it's just me, but that kind of noise prevents me from using the laptop and would have cause me to return it had I not found a solution. I simply think that it's such a big potential problem that a clear solution should have been explained in huge letters, all the more so because the solution is very banal. It might be just my opinion, but judging by reviews and comments on forums, I'd say it isn't.

Best is to use high pressure air. Hold the fan still with a pencil while blowing.
Or use some cotton on a very small stick. Hold the fan still. Clean on both sides of the fan.
If you need to clean the NB fan, I think you have more cleaning to do. Better to take motherboard out.

Guys, I need some advice here. I've got my 2.8 Northwood up to 3.16 (yea, I know, not great or anything but good enough for right now).
Anyway, with the coming of the blazing Summer temps hitting Michigan in the high 80-90s, my case and CPU temps are skyrocketing. I am finding that my idle temps, once at 31C are now at 35-36C, and the CPU temps once at 42C max under load are now reaching 50+ C. Also, this is the first time in months upon seemingly endless months that I am now getting random reboots, and I am sure it is due to soaring temps and heat problems. The room temps here are killer, and right now are in the high 70s...
I would like to please hear your suggestions/recommendations on a good AIR/FAN cooling solution for my specs I have listed below. I am looking for something that is not very loud if possible, I welcome and thank you for your comments!

I only know that I can't suggest a HS and fan because my temperature is higher than my 2.6GHz Northwood's since i decided to install the Thermalright XP90 and the 92mm UFO Thermaltake fan(~82CFM max.). I recently discovered an old picture from Speedfan saying CPU temp: 40C!!! Now right after boot up, I get 40-44C idle and it can climb up to 60C at full load. I know for a fact that air flow is bad inside the case but it's unbelievable to have 40C+ idle. It can't possibly be the air flow so soon after boot. The pressure (and contact) on the CPU was enough to actually see my CPU stuck on the base of the HS after removing the HS!!! A few pins had to be straightened too.
So, from my experience I think you already rock, since we have 30C(86F) already where I live. The feeling of the XP90 crashed under my boot will ease my pain...Oh, yes it will.
P.S. I 'll give the Arctic Silver a try before smashing the XP90 junk...

Mac Pro Tower - Which Fans Cool All of What?

So I have a 2008, 2.8 GHz 8-core Mac Pro tower. I'm one of the many people who have problems with the fans. In my case, I can get really high fan speeds, and the problem seems to be due to a faulty temperature sensor. (Using iStat, it will sometimes show unreasonably high temps on a couple cores [or the heat sinks, apparently] immediately after turning it on, whether or not it's been off for awhile. Sometimes, it will even show negative temperatures, in which case the fans will really go into overdrive. Yes, I've already tried resetting the SMC and cleaning it out - nothing.)
What I've ended up doing so far is download Macs Fan Control and setting it to base the fan speeds off CPU temps that don't give faulty readings. This works really well for lowering the fan speed (and thus noise), but I understand that different fans cool parts of the system besides just the CPU. The fan names give basic descriptions, but not a lot of detail beyond that. I've been trying to find a diagram showing which fans cool which parts of the system, but I mostly get results about fan noise, or minimalist diagrams that don't tell me all I want to know. I'd like to make sure my settings are fairly optimal before I do anything intensive.
Can anyone help me with this?

I think you are "barking up the wrong tree".
The fans in the Mac Pro are controlled by Software in the System Management Controller. They make a feedback loop based on measured temperatures. If you are getting racing fans, that is probably based on Bad Temperature inputs. Fixing the temperature inputs is where you should place your energy. The fans are slaves in this process.
One possible exception: Most of the fans do have an RPM output indicator, which tells whether they are spinning properly. If the diagnostic indicates a MOT error, that is likely to be a Fan Motor that is not showing high RPMs at High speed settings, and may be defective. The power supply fans were designed by a different team, and may not have the same controls.
What SMC Fan Control and similar software allows you to do is put a new Floor under the fan speeds. They will spin faster at idle, and it is possible they may move up to even higher speeds more slowly. What is does NOT allow you to do is any actual reduction in minimum fan speeds, regardless of whether it allows you to set lower numbers.
When the numbers get extremely large, the magnitude bits overflow into what is sometimes considered the sign bit. That has no meaning in this context -- all numbers should be treated as positive numbers. That probably indicates they took a shortcut and used general-purpose routines for signed numbers that were lying around instead of writing more correct versions for positive numbers from scratch.

Can Lenovo enable the fan control option in the EM?
I know I can install other versions of the EM software but, I won't have the yellow color improvements found in the Yoga specific EM.

I upgraded my Z820 with the liquid cooled CPU heatsinks.
Apparently the 'fan cooling profile' is based on the hardware configuration, do I need to do anything else or will the system detect the changes at boot time?
Reset the CMOS for example?

It's your machine, out of warranty, you can do what ever you like, you can remove the whole case and blow cool air to the machine, you can drill dozen holes to get better air flow, you can pour chilled water thru all corners of the machine ..... and this will reduce 5 or 10 degrees. The question: do you want to do that ?

Best Cooling Options

Sorry to Bother All again,
I kno that my PSU is shite and I am working around a replacement, but my processor heat on PC Alert 4 is showing it in the 50's I am hoping this is incorrect as I have removed my big Cooler Master Jet and inserted the OEM Heat Sink and Fan because of the power output.
I have applied Thermal Paste onto the processor which is deisgned for this type of one, and I am shocked to see the heat so high....
Is there another Heat Testing software I can use? to get a 2nd opinion.. at the moment I have taken side off and put my desk fan on max and allowing that to blow some cold air in there to help... guess wot it aint doing jack shite.... HELP is again needed.
I will put my coolermaster back in when I know I have the power to support it, but the OEM fan should do a decent JOB!

Most advice I have seen say 50's is ok.
Maybe you got too much or too little heat sink compound on it.
If it is temporary, you could install the coolermaster, disconnect a case fan, leave the side off.
Many advise http://mbm.livewiredev.com/ to display cpu temperatures, put I think it uses the same sensor. I do not think you can get another sensor where it would be useful.

Cooling Options? Mac Pro Heating Up Room

Hi there. The AC in the house cannot keep my office cool (12ft by 15ft), it always hovers around 82 degrees while the rest of the house is 72. If the computer is off the room is fine.
I'm looking for options to cool my Mac Pro and RAID array.
1) I've seen some units (an Autodesk Smoke..) encased in a large temperature controlled, refrigerator-like unit. Is there a name for this? Any links?
2) Would it help to use a fan software? I've heard mixed things about them. Although I'm not sure if this would cool the room..
I tried a standalone AC unit but I didn't have a way for the exhaust to exit so it actually heated the room.
Any thoughts/ ideas?

Nope. AC window unit is best, or central air and direct it through the vents.
I have never, ever, in nearly 4 yrs heard anything 'negative' about SmcFanControl - it could and should be a must for any Mac Pro - all it can do is help prevent heat from building inside the case and can't do anything for the room (and yes my low end 1,1 does heat a small room after a few hours).
In fact last summer, I felt it was time to build a PC to run Windows and keep things running cooler, even though it is a much more powerful system.
In one house, I had a small storage room that I ran extension cables from and left cold in winter and had its own AC in summer. I thought of drilling into the basement and running DVI and USB extensions also!

Best way to cool MacBook Pro

I've been looking at ways to cool my MacBook Pro down when gaming. I've come across two in particular: Targus Chill Mat for Mac [AWE41US] and ThermaPak HeatShift Pad. Any suggestions on which would work better or other options?

Found this post while doing my own search for similar reasons. It is hard to find a cooler that will have much effect on that upper left area that gets really warm. Most seem to be designed to blow air up into the middle/bottom of the machine and exhaust from the sides. That is little help. If I play an mmorpg like swtor, the machine runs very hot even over a short period of time. Here is where I am starting.
I am waiting on a Cooler Master notepal U3. It is aluminum and has 3-80mm fans that can be placed where you want them to blow. If I am able to get the result I am looking for I will probably replace the fans with something a little more robust and quieter.

KT3 Ultra2 R & Thermaltake Silent Boost Cooler

I recently (yesterday) installed the Silent Boost A1889-01 on one of my pcs with the KT3 Ultra2 R. After installing it, and starting pc, the boot sequence stopped at the post screen and a message saying 'cpu fan not operating' can up with a buzzer. However, I had the side of the case open and could see the fan spining before this message. I continued the boot process and got a monitoring utility up and there appeared to be no problems.
I then rebooted (fine no message or buzzer) went into bios to 'PC Health Status' and noted the 'Cpu Fan Speed' and this is what it does. Whilst most of the time it registers 2600 rpms now and again it goes to 0 rpm (as in 2600>0>2600 nothing in between) for a moment and then goes back to its normal speed. The fan itself does not appear to be slowing down at all. Also as I said, when I was monitoring the fan speed by way of a monitoring utility there was no such problem.
The motherboard connector is fine because the other cpu fan that I removed did not have any issues like that.
Can anyone please give me any clues. Is this mobo fussy as regards the fan on this cooler. Anybody ever experienced anything like this.
BTW running latest bios v5.7.

What is the best CPU/FAN combo for my system

My computer configuration is located in my Signature....
With this type of CPU and motherboard, what kind of heatsink/fan combo would you recommend. I am using the one that came with my 2100 processor and I'm worried because I don't think this will provide adequate CPU cooling. So what CPU/FAN combo would give me the best bang for my buck.

Northbridge cooler options for K7N2G-L

I was considering if I should replace the stock passive solution on my K7N2G-L northbridge with something active. I don't currently use the onboard video, but will when I get my second system back together. It looks like a Chrome Orb or Vantec Iceberg are the only real options I can find. Are they any better than stock? I can't find anything useful about IGP cooling solutions in google.com. Is there a better cooling solution out there? Or should I leave well enough alone?

I put a 40mm Sunon 6800 rpm fan on the Heatsink of theK7N2-L a few weeks ago and it works very well. The hardest thing I found to complete the projest was finding screws that would take a bite of the NB heatsink fins. I hadn't suffered any instability issues but had noticed that the NB sink was noticably warm to the touch with my FSB set at 200 so I thouhgt what the heck, the fan was just laying around collecting dust anyhow so I slapped it on.

Macbook - best new hard disk options

Just recently picked up a used Macbook 2.16 Core2Duo mid-2007 version and need to install a new HD. What are your suggestions for best option?
The 7200rpm drives have really dropped in price, to the point where there is little difference with the 5400rpm models.
Was looking at a Seagate 250GB 7200rpm, which has good reviews on web and a nice 5-year warranty. Any possible problems with the 7200rpm drive overheating?
Maybe better to go with a 5400rpm?
Also, I suspect the fan may not be working 100% perfectly, though this is just my impression. If this is the case, would I be better off getting the 5400rpm?
