?Best 'simple' format to import assets into DVDStudio?

I was told to output my FCP4 movie with compressor and do it in two parts: video only then do audio separately. So I've got an mpeg2 video file and an aiff file to bring into DVD Studio Pro (3).
However, when I lay the files into my track (in DVD Studio Pro), I've noticed a synch problem. There doesn't appear to be any way to lock the video and audio together as they were in FCP.
Am I missing something simple, or was compressing video and audio into separate files a bad idea?
Lisa
PS. I'm really sorry if this is a stupid question. I have looked thru the manuals and can't find a simple instruction about getting movies out of FCP4 and into DVD Studio.

I don't have dvdsp 4 or compressor 2. But I think we have that a.pack thing. But, before I try that, can you help me with a more basic thing..
I'm still concerned about actually dragging the assets into the timeline. When I drag my audio file (whatever format) and my video file to the track window DOES DVDSP3 "KNOW" THAT THE CLIPS ARE CONNECTED AND SHOULD LINE UP EXACTLY? In FCP you can drag a clip and it automatically separates the video and the audio tracks and keeps them in synch (unless you bump them!!!). But, DVDSP doesn't seem to have a way to take the two separate assets and keep them locked together (unless it just does it automatically). But it sure is easy to bump the audio asset and get the whole timeline out of synch.
Then from what I can tell from the other discussions, there are issues with PAL & NTSC and the frame rates and audio bit rates and all kinds of other confusing things . I guess that shows up further down your movie as things all get out of whack. I'm assuming that your response address those issues.
Is there a way to import an asset that is Sound and Vision from one file and let DVDSP split them out to the right tracks like FCP does? Or all all DVDSP assets supposed to be video or audio only.
Thanks again!
Lisa

Just a personal preference, but if I intend on using the photos for printing I keep them in the PSD form. When adding to imovie, however, I use .pict

What is the best format to import images into iBA? How should I compress my images before importing? What is the best file format? PNG? Jpeg? I'm trying to figure out the best file format / compression for importing images into iBA. Also, does anyone know how iBA will compress the file? Are the assets attached (like a website) or flattened out? Does anyone know how iBA handles this? Many many thanks to anyone with insight into this.

  • What is the best video format for importing into After Effects CS5

Please look at this video, work in progress.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49_wbdKALQk
The opening, featuring a ribbon of videos, was created in After Effects, using Digieffects Freeform.
The  issue is the poor quality of the videos that are featured in the  opening -- compared to the higher quality of videos from the original Premiere  project., which you can see at the end of the clip.
To create the After Effects project, I exported a series of video clips from Premiere  to mp4.
Then I imported them into AfterEffects.
The bottom line, and the purpose of this question, is I am thinking that  MP4 was not the best choice for the Adobe Premiere export.
What  is the best format to export video from in Premiere Pro CS5 to import  into after effects, or to import into any other editing program,  incuding importing right back into Adobe Premiere, if that is eever  needed.
    AVI?
    MOV
    MP4
And any other settings that will result with the highest qualiity videos for importing.
    Thanks

To follow on with Wade's suggestion...
There are lots of ways to get movies and projects and other things back and forth between After Effects and Premiere Pro. This page outlines them:
"Working with Premiere Pro and After Effects"
If you must render and export a movie out of one application to bring it into another, there is a very basic piece of video workflow advice that you need to keep in mind (which applies to _all_ video software, not just After Effects and Premiere Pro):
If you're creating a movie to be used in the next step of a post-production pipeline, you _never_ want to use a format that does lossy compression. You either use no compression or (preferable) lossless compression. Examples of codecs that provide lossless compression are the Animation codec and PNG codec at the highest quality settings; these can be used in a QuickTime container, for example. Never compress a movie with lossy compression except at the very end of your pipeline, when you're creating the final movie for distribution.
MP4 (MPEG-4) is a lossy codec. The quality loss is acceptable for the last stage in the pipeline, but it's not acceptable for an intermediate file.
It seems that you would benefit from reading this and and working your way through this.

Okay, here's where I stand at this point regarding exporting and/or dynamic linking between AfterEffects and Premiere.
I'm in After Effects.  I create a composition I like.  So I first tried the old fashioned way. I exported it into a MOV file with the animation preset. Millions of colors.  Same frame rate as my Premiere project, which also uses MOV files with no problem.
Howver when I import the MOV file created by After effects, the NEW MOV file section of the premier project plays sluggish.  And it also causes the videos that follow to play sluggish.   And they are all MOV files at the same frame rate.
The same thing happens when I do a dynamic link between the two projects.  A sluggish response starting with the After Effects dynamic link and affecting the MOV video files that follow.
It's a very short After Effects composition.  About 3 second slong.
I have a very powerful computer built especially for CS5 and premiere --so that should not be an issue -- recently was in the top ten of the benchmark list.
Up to this point my video files have played perfectly layer upon layer with no problems.
Is there something I am not considering?
    Thanks.

  • Line Drawing best file format for import in InDesign

i was wondering what is  the accepted and recommended file format for files to be imported in InDesign. I was under the impression that AI files should be saved as EPS but I just read an article that says that Adobe's Dov  Isaacs said that eps will be shortly obsolete. What should I do. I work on curriculum that contains both photographs and line drawing and we use tiff for the former and eps for the latter. Most of our line drawing is done in AI. Howeverwe have a cartoonist that sends us files in jpg format. What would be the best file format for him and for us as we draw in AI?
    Article link: http://www.prepressure.com/library/file-formats/eps
The future of the EPS file format
EPS is rapidly becoming an outdated file format which is being  replaced by PDF just like PostScript itself is also being phased out and  replaced by PDF. Don’t just take my word on this. Here is what Dov  Isaacs from Adobe said in a discussion on a PrintPlanet forum about the  future of PostScript: “ …Adobe will continue to support EPS as a  legacy graphics format for import of non-color managed, opaque graphical  data into Adobe applications (such as InDesign and Illustrator).  Although we certain do not recommend that new graphical content be  stored in EPS format (except to satisfy the need to import data into  page layout programs that aren’t quite PDF-centric — no need to mention  names here!), our user base should feel comfortable that there is no  need to worry about a need to convert their very sizable libraries of  EPS-based graphic assets.”

Yes, I drag the AI file in.
If after it's in place I need to change I can just right click and chose edit original make the changes and save and the illustration in inDesign will reflect the changes.
On the other hand I can make changes to the original and all iterations of the file will automatically update, say if I used the illustration in several documents.
As an example I had completed a set of documents for a new company, i.e., biz cards, brochures, product labeling, stationery, etc. and in their wisdom they decided to make changes in their logo, which, of course, is on everything. I opened the AI file with the logo made the changes saved and all the documents then reflected the changes. The only caveat to do this seamlessly is to make sure that your file logo size is the same as the original or you might have to tweak placement in the other documents
It is this interoperability that to me makes the Creative Suite so much more than the sum of their parts.

  • What is the "best" video format to import into Aftereffects (for keylight plugin)

    Hello All,
    I
have various choices in Adobe Premiere (CS4) for exporting.
The top choices seem to be
    Microsoft AVI
Avi uncompressed (this i assume is much better than just Microsoft AVI -- for greencreen keylight work?)
    And Quicktime.
So I assume my best choices would be Quicktime or AVI Uncompressed.
Any reason to choose Quicktime over AVI uncompressed?  Or visa versa?
    Thanks

The best starts with the camera and recording system. Any system that gives you 4:2:2 color at 10 bit as original at a high data rate is best. Well almost best. Best is 4:4:4 color at 32bit, but you must have a pile of cash to capture this way.
The worst modern acquisition formats are the mpeg systems used by phones and some digital still cameras. For cameras that independent film makers can afford, let's say under $10K, I'd say that the best, meaning highest color depth and least compression goes something like this. There may be some room for debate on the order of the  Panasonic and Sony P2/XDCAM but the new AVC-Intra format is, for now, at the top:
Panasonic AVC-Intra (the replacement for P2)
Sony XDCAM and HDCAM SR (new generation)
    Panasonic P2 DVCPRO
    HDV
    DVC Pro 100 SD
    DVC Pro 50 SD
AVCHD (though this is a HD format I've put it below sd formats because of compression)
    DV
I've left off analogue formats because they require specialized capture cards. I also left off the Red and the Canon and Nikon still cameras that capture HD because the Red is too expensive for the list and the still cameras use a compression scheme that I haven't played with yet. I think that the Canon 5D Mark II may produce footage that will key quite well but don't know where to put it in the list.
Once you have the original footage you can either work with the native formats or transcode to your favorite lossless format. I prefer Animation Codec Quicktime because it is universally available to and simple to transfer between platforms. Also good are sequential tiff or even png formats. Many folks use jpg compressed Quicktimes. I don't know many pros that use avi's because uncompressed are so huge and the compressed avi's are pretty messy.
For the production pipeline to keep working you almost always have to stray from the native codecs because they do not support alpha channels. If you choose to work with P2 (MXF) files, which AE CS4 handles just fine, then you will have to render to a codec that supports alpha channels or render separate alpha channels to bring your footage into a NLE or Flash and with transparency preserved.
I hope that answers your question. You can't easily fix a poor quality original by simply transcoding to a lossless format.

  • Best quality format to import into iMovie

I am getting news footage sent to me on a disc to use in an iMovie project. They can send me the files in just about any format. What format should I ask for to provide the best quality video? Are there common formats that do not work with iMovie? File size in not a concern. Project is 24 FPS- Cinema Widescreen 16:9 but I can change this if this limits the quality of the news footage.

  • Possible to change date format when importing files into Aperture 3

Just wondering if it is possible to change the format of the date from YYYY-MM-DD to YYYYMMDD when you rename files as they are imported into Aperture 3? I typically rename my files and insert my initials, date the photo was taken, sequence number, camera used and original file name. When I do this in Aperture 3, the date format used includes dashes. I would like to have the file renamed without the dashes in the date. Is this possible?

You should be able to edit the format in the import presets. I have done this for folder stucture of imports, I believe you can do the same for the file renaming. At the bottom of the drop down box for file naming at improt should be an edit option which brings up the import naming presets, select the "YYYY-MM-DD" and remove the dashes.

  • Moving and renaming newly imported assets

I work at a small college tv studio and am trying to deploy a Final Cut Server setup. One of the requirements of our setup is to have an actual file structure for our footage so that it is not all thrown into one folder by FCS.
I'm very new to FCS, but I understand how the system works from a general standpoint. Here's what I'm trying to do:
    1) Import assets into FCS using the client app, choosing a category (like "B-Roll") in a metadata field or lookup
    2) Setting up an automation to Move the asset to a folder called B-Roll on the device.
    3) Rename the asset filename based on other metadata fields (e.g. "CampusExteriorLibrary030420111510.mov")
I'm pretty sure I could do 1 & 2 by simply setting up an Automation for each category to Copy the asset to that folder and then Delete the original, but I haven't been able to figure out how to accomplish #3.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Also, I understand that it's best to have FCS manage the files itself, and I will NOT be allowing anyone Finder access to the structure. I want the file structure their for safety purposes (FCS server dies, user readable backups of footage).

In order to have a "backup" plan in case the final cut server dies, you are setting yourself up for a convoluted and tedious workflow. Basically you are shooting yourself in the foot before you even start. The faster you wean yourself and users off the folder structure mentality, the more powerful your Final Cut Server installation will be.
If your clients will be checking out projects with media ( it appears you don't have a SAN in place ) your folder structure will not make any effect for users anyway, since all the files will be cached locally.
Just do your metadata logging on the upload or with Final Cut Pro.

  • I purchased CDs and imported them into my iTunes and when the artists has other artists featured on the tracks it separates these tracks into a different album. How can I consolidate these back into one album?

I have CDs that I've purchased from music stores (ie. Best Buy) and have imported them into my itunes library. The problem is that iTunes has separated all the tracks that feature another artist into a separate album. I want all the songs filed under the same album, so that when I play the whole album, I can hear all the songs. Also when the album work is not showing up on some of these CDs. How can I fix this?

The sort fields should generally be empty unless you've putting in custom values to sort solo artists by their surnames. You can apply common changes to thousands of tracks at once, just don't apply the wrong change because there is no undo.
It is a good idea to backup before undertaking large scale changes. See this backup tip for a suggested approach.

  • "Import Files into iTunes" automator action not working

I'm having an issue with a simple automator action, "Import Files into iTunes". It's the only thing I have in the workflow but when I drop audio files onto the application, the action encounters an error. In trying to figure out what was amiss, I read that there was a version number conflict after iTunes 10, so I followed the instructions here but they did not fix the issue. Does anyone have a suggestion on what to try or how to diagnose the issue? I'm running Yosemite (10.10.2) and iTunes 12.1.0.50. Thanks for the help!

Yeah, I'd happy provide details if I saw them. The message itself just says, "The action “Import Files into iTunes” encountered an error." Is there a way to get more information on the error?
    Thanks!

  • Importing devices into QPM/Common Services

    Hi,
We are in the process of installing QOS Policy Manager and I am struggling with a simple way to import devices into Common Services 3.2.  The interface and the documentation is lacking to say the least.  If it helps, we have a separate installation of Ciscoworks LMS 4.1.  If I can run an export from that and than import into Common Services, I think that would be the easiest way to get all of my devices.
We use Solarwinds Orion for network monitoring, and I was hoping this application had something similar where you could do a device discovery via scanning a subnet via SNMP.  If this is available, I don't see where to set this up.
I did manually add a device, and I thought about exporting it and building a csv file from the headers from that file, but we have so many devices that I feel that would be very time consuming to build that list.
    Any suggestions?

It's been a while since I've had hands-on with one but Common Services 3.2 is part of LMS 3.1.
It has a discovery tool and the option to import devices via the cli using the dcrcli utility. See the link for using discovery in LMS 3.1 here.
You'll probably find it an exercise in frustration though. the old LMS will not recognize many of your more modern routers and thus QPM will be unable to send policies to them.
You'd be much better off using a more modern toolset like deploying configurations using NCM if you're an Orion shop or with templates in LMS 4.x. SolarWinds' NTA does a nice job of querying the CBQoS MIB to give you visibility into what's going on with QoS in your network.
