Best size to import *jpeg images?

I am creating a DVD movie slide show containing video clips, music background, and many *jpg still images. The images are in the 16 x 9 aspect format, but are very large size files, around 1.5 to 2.7 MB. I can reduce the size as desired. I usually reduce them to 10 x 5.614 inches at 100 px resolution resulting in files that are 200 - 600 KB. In your experience, what is the optimum size for still images to be imported into the media assets panel, or, does it matter at all? Thanks.

What are the current pixel dimensions of your jpg still images (width and height in pixels)? File size is not the target property here, pixel dimensions are. In video, inches have no meaning. Think pixels. Inches, ppi, and dpi have significance in printing, not video.
What version of Premiere Elements are you using and on what computer operating system is it running?
What are the properties of the video that will be included in this project?
With regard to photo sizing in this type of project, the classical not to exceed suggestions of the forum moderator Steve Grisetti are 1000 x 750 pixels (for SD project settings) and 2000 x 1500 (for HD project settings). When appropriate, I opt to use 1000 x 750 and 2200 x 1238 values respectively. With Premiere Elements 11 and 12 on Windows 7, 8, or 8.2 64 bit, these classical suggestions can be extended to a certain degree. If problems in trying that, then back to the classical thinking. Keep in mind that no matter how great the resolution, the end product is reduced to the standard for the export...in this case, DVD VIDEO standard and standard widescreen both have frame sizes of 720 x 480 (NTSC) and 720 x 576 (PAL).
I would look forward to the opportunity to fine tune the above if you are interested and you supply more information.

Imported JPEG images are too light

Imported JPEG images appear lighter/brighter than the scanned image.
How can I make JPEG images appear with the correct lightness/brightness so they look like the actual book or magazine from which they were scanned?
Using Apple's "Preview" to look at a JPEG- everything looks fine. But when a JPEG is imported into Motion 4.0.3 (and/or Final Cut Pro 7.0.3), the image appears lighter/brighter, as if it's washed out. To see if this is just the way a JPEG appears in Motion and not how the finished product will be, I exported a Motion project with one or more JPEGs as a QuickTime movie. The QuickTime movie does not bring the JPEG image(s) back to the "correct" lightness/brightness as the scanned image.
Settings used:
JPEG image, using a CanoScan LiDE 210 scanner, Color Space: RGB, Color Profile: sRGB IEC61966-2.1, current Monitor Gamma setting on the scanner is set to 1.80
How can I make JPEG images appear in Motion (and Final Cut Pro) so they are true to the source from which they were scanned?

Does it do the same thing when you use TIFFs?

When importing jpeg images I am getting 2 dupplicates need fix.

When I import jpeg images from Sony a77 camera to my windows 7 computer I am getting 2 more dupplicates, the 2nd one has noise that looks like rectangles . Is there a fix for this? It is on elements 10.

For Importing from Camera, I am guessing you are using 'From Card or card reader'. The media imported in this way is imported via Adobe Photodownloader. Can you please check if the option for 'Automatically fix red eyes' is unchecked? It would be good if you can paste the snapshot of the import dialog you are using. I am guessing some setting in import dialog is causing this issue.

How to make Photoshop save Aperture imported JPEG images as JPEGs

Recently, I upgraded from Photoshop CS 5 to CS 5.1.
My point and shoot cameras record in JPEG format. Often, I'll import those photos into Aperture and then tweak them in Photoshop using the Edit in External Editor command. My preferences for the external editor in Aperture were set to 8-bit, Photoshop
With Photoshop CS 5, I would edit the photo and choose Save and the edited photo would be saved back to Aperture as a new version, in a JPEG format.
Now, using Photoshop CS 5.1, when the imported image from Aperture is converted into a PSD file and when I save back to Aperture, I end up with a PSD file.
How can I revert to how it was before? JPEG image in Aperture, opened in external editor Photoshop as a JPEG, edited in Photoshop, then saved back to Aperture as a new version JPEG?
(Though this question is approached in this forum, a solution to my question is never found as each dicussion ends up going off-topic from the original question)

Like I said before, you cannot open a jpeg as a jpeg, the file must be decompressed to open in PS or in Aperture, and that has always been the case.
I do not know how it used to work, but I tested and you are correct that with PS 12.1 and with Aperture 3.2.2 a JPEG sent to open in external editor (PS) is opened into your choice of lossless format and then goes back to Aperture in the lossless format you chose.
IMO this is the way it should be, because every save into JPEG loses image data, so such saves should be limited to the final export, in this case when the image actually leaves Aperture. If the file was compressed as a JPEG when leaving PS, decompressed and edited in Aperture, then compressed again to export as JPEG from Aperture, unnecessary additional image data loss would occur.
It is always better to save the application of lossy compression until the very last step in a workflow because other usages (printing, for instance) may occur before applying the lossy compression.

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution. We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
where are the photos from?
what fixes have you tried?
where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?

Best strategy for importing organized images

Hello,
I have recently started using Aperture in my photography workflow and I need some advice from the experts on the best strategy to import the existing .JPGs from my hard disk into my Aperture library.
Prior to using Aperture, my workflow was as follows:
1.) I would import ALL the photos from my digital camera to a folder on my hard disk (one folder for each date of import). These, in effect, were my 'master' images, which I never edited or deleted.
2.) Next I would make a copy of each new master folder, under a separate folder called 'picks', where I would go thru and delete the bad ones and occasionally make some minor edits or crops to the good ones. These 'picks' folders are what I used for my slideshows, photo galleries, etc.
NOW, as I'm moving everything to Aperture, I'm attempting to find the best strategy to import everything, where I would maintain both a master copy of everything that came off my camera and the already organized 'albums' of 'versions' the represent my 'picks', but also reduce some of the redundancy of having duplicate copies of 60-70% of the photos in my library.
Here is where I need some advice. In the case of new photos imported directly from the camera into Aperture I have managed to figure out how to import the master images and then create albums of versions for my good pics. However, I haven't found any way to import my existing masters and picks without importing two copies of each "good" pick.
Is there any way I can get Aperture to recognize that the photos in my 'picks' folders are actually 'versions' of some of the original 'masters' so I don't need to import two master copies of each of my good pics? (I generally left the file names the same.)
I have several thousand existing pics on my hard disk that I'm hoping to import into Aperture so I'm hoping there is an efficient way to do this!

HI I would also be interested in how others do this. I have been playing with aperture for some time and I am still not sure whether to commit to it.
I also keep my masters in a folder structure with year at the highest level and day of shooting below that.
I know its not necessary to do this in Aperture but I am not sure I understand why or if its a bad thing to do.

What do you mean by size? The dimensions? The File size?
There are options depending on exactly what you want to do and why you want to do it.
In general: these are options in the File -> Export dialogue. The Jpeg Quality setting refers to file size, the Size option refers to dimensions.

Importing jpeg images from camera to IPhoto

I get the following error message when uploading jpeg images from my camera to IPhoto in my macbook air- "iPhoto cannot import your photos because there was a problem downloading an image".- any ideas?
If I try to import just one image at the time I get the following error-
"The following file cannot be imported. The file is in an unrecognisable format"

What version of iPhoto? Of the OS? What camera? Does your camera mount to the desktop? Have you tried image capture? Have you tried a USB card reader? When did you last reformat your camera memory card using the camera's format command?

Imported jpeg images are too dark

I understand the reasoning behind the dark images when shooting raw. Mine are imported as jpegs so shouldn't I be able to vew & edit them as I see them in other software
The world explains this for raw files but I cant find anything on JPEG. This has been the case since I purchased lightroom a few months ago. But one time for a few days light room
actual displayed all the files in library and develop mode as I see them in the thumbnails.

I have imported this jpeg into illustrator. How do I edit the color of the image, as in the color of the letters?

Unless you trace it and rebuild it as vectors or re-create it from scratch using type tools and the original fonts, your options will be severely limited like applying effects and tints only. You are simply using the wrong program. AI is not meant to edit pixel data in this fashion. That's Photoshop stuff.

This is a flaw in Pages IMHO.
As for many things the information and manipulating the properties is oblique to say the least.
You have to do what you have done or do some calculations based on size, and known resolution.
A way around might be to tag the image in the name with the actual pixel size.
I work from my images marked in folders as vLoRes, LoRes, MedRes, HiRes, vHiRes and uHiRes.
Given a basic requirement of a bare minimum 100 pixels/cm (roughly 254dpi) for commercial reproduction the images will cover (with bleed):
vLoRes = A7
LoRes = A6
MedRes = A5
HiRes = A4
vHiRes = A3
uHiRes = beyond A3
But then I happen to be very systematic in the way I work. It is a useful skill I have taught in my studios. Unfortunately many designers, and users in general, are sloppy and short sighted.

IMPORTING JPEGS -- THEY'RE COMING OUT WASHED OUT

I have been trying to import jpeg images into final cut and in the process of importing them Final cut is slightly changing the images so that they're washed out, people's faces look overexposed where they didn't in the originals. I've tried resizing the images and importing smaller ones since the originals are very large but that has not helped. PLEASE HELP! Thanks.

Any luck in altering the Gamma settings of your imported JPEGs within FCP at all?

Best size for plasma & LCD screens

Just wondering, what is the best size to start with images then into DVD spro - for the best compatability for use on plasma & lcd screens - with a standard DVD player feed??

The pixel dimensions of the standard DVD palyer are effectivley 720x480 for NTSC and 720x576 for PAL. You'd be best off scaling your images to that size (starting at a size of 720x534 or 768x576, see page 85 of the user guide) in your favorite graphics program.
All LCD monitors you're thinking of using have a much higher resolution, and will upscale the image. Many 4:3 plasma screens are that resolution (especially older plasma, or ones below 42 inches). New plasmas will upscale it too.
The most you can really do is give the video as much data rate as you can, but keep your total data rate to 8 mbps or lower, so that less capable DVD players can keep up.

FcpX best way to import photos

What is the best way to import jpegs into Final Cut Pro X? I was told by Apple Tech Support a few years back to import them into IPhoto and access them through IPhoto. Is this still the preferred way to import photos? I'd rather not use IPhoto.

jpgs usually are highly compressed. too high. if you notice banding in pics, in many cases this is based upon jpg-compression! people use 40Mpix cameras, but squeeze the data into tiny 250k files ...
max res of video is 1920x1080; additional pixels only needed when applying re-framing (crop, Ken Bruns etc); dpi can be set to 500 or 7 - no difference; if you like to get that last 0.01% of extra quality, convert your raws to tiff or png. or jpg in 'best'/100% ...
iPhoto is - imho - only 'needed' as a very handy data-base.
FCPX has/is a data-base too - I like all my 'footage' in my Events; not elsewhere. But this is no general advice.

Best size jpeg image to import to HD project?

I think I'm having more "trouble" understanding this than I should! I need to buy about 50 jpg images from iStockphoto.com to include in a Final Cut Pro project. We shoot with an HVX200 in HD 720 - and the timeline is set up as such. When I buy the images, the larger they are the more they cost - naturally! I don't want to waste money buying jpg's that are larger and 'better' quality - if I can't see the difference on an HD monitor, or say typical consumer 48 inch HD television. So what's the "best" size I should be buying? Medium size is about 1698x1131 px. Since my image size of HD is 1260x720 - isn't this medium size sufficient? Or would I see better quality in the final output if I bought the large size which is 3072x2048 px? It costs a few dollars more - but if I don't see the difference, why spend the money? Am I thinking correctly thinking with anything bigger than 1260x720 - I won't see the difference, so why get it any bigger?
Somehow, I think I'm wrong thinking that! I've tried researching this - but am getting totally confused. Is there an easy answer here? I KNOW I can't be the only one out there wondering this
